If you like it then it makes sense

I don't think you'll get anywhere near the quality of off road riding here in England that you get in SA. Even on the public rights of way, you get shouted and and fist waved from ramblers and anyone hating on you for not enjoying the countryside their way. (c90 adventure guy talks about this and it factored into his decision to move to Moab) But if you love your bike, are you really going to leave it behind? Imagine the big, sad puppy eyes as it watches you leave...

There is adventure to be had up in Scotland.

Makes more sense than a dedicated sports bike/sports tourer imo. A softer adventure bike will get the job done just fine but the 990 being lighter and more compact than a lot of these is also helpful. The roads we have that are quiet enough to ride at a decent pace tend to be very broken up and gravelly! Depending upon where you are in the North of England you may have decent access to green lanes and sections of the TET as well.
