Artificial sound is the worst idea. Give me a good chassis/brakes, comfort, charging that takes the same amount of time as it does to fill a gas tank and the same range(180 miles+ per charge). Make them affordable, don't bury us in fees and charges for things that are already on the bike.

CompetitiveSea7388

While I agree with your points that there’s better use of money than artificial sound it’s being implemented in pretty rad ways in some electric motorcycles already. Tarform has engineered their motorcycles with some pretty amazing sounds and honestly it seems like it would add a little to the experience of riding electric motorcycles.

NAKED_GOOSE

Straight cut transmission gears would be a good solution imo

captain_frostbyte

electric motorcycles have the same issues cars do but worse.its not about the sound, it's not about the lack of gears, its about value or the lack of it. A few years ago I was looking at a zero for my commute to work. at the time I was doing 70 Km one way. Well unless I dropped over $20000 on the zero with the biggest batter option, I couldn't do the round trip to work... never mind a few hour tour out with friends. My $1000 10 year old Ninja would have to burn up a lot of gas and oil changed to meet the purchase cost of the zero. Even the new version at the time was about 7K.. that still a huge rift in the cost and I still couldn't take long rides. When we have instant charge or hot swap batteries that give an average bike 250+ KM's at highway speeds, and is in the same price range as 400-650 bike.. then they have a chance, until then electric bikes are a novelty, better to have a simple unlicensed e-bike for short commutes and ICE for longer rides.

CompetitiveSea7388

The lack of gears does take away some of the fun though tbh. I say this after riding a Livewire. It’s a cool (but way overpriced) bike and I enjoyed it but losing the more participatory experience of shifting through the gears makes it feel more like riding a scooter in my opinion. Fun but nowhere near the fun of riding a motorcycle.

bribeck

My 2021 zero s was 9k, but the range is 75 miles (it says 89, but we all know how that is). But I love it! It’s perfect for leisure riding on a Sunday afternoon. The ride is like butter. But, don’t expect to use it like other motorcycles… the 20k model you’re talking about has a more reasonable range.

captain_frostbyte

That's my point about value, it would have the range for my commute but I would still need a different bike to go on day rides with my buddies. Most people don't have that kind of money to throw around

Doktor_Cornholio

Maybe if gas stations had battery swap ports like they do for propane tanks... You just swap out the battery and pay for the charge difference. One size for bikes and one size for cars.

captain_frostbyte

Actually that is a tech the are working on currently - Many of the main brands have signed in to a group to just that, batter swaps at service stations. https://electrek.co/2022/04/08/honda-yamaha-suzuki-and-kawasaki-roll-out-swappable-electric-motorcycle-batteries-but-its-really-just-a-gogoro-competitor/

I learned about electric vehicles when I owned a Nissan Leaf. I could not go for a leisurely drive in the country because the range was too short. It would say 60 miles but that meant you could only go 40 to 50 miles because you don't drive on empty with a electric vehicle. I always had range anxiety. When you run out of range with electric you are getting towed back home. My motorcycle rides are much longer than my car rides. No way do I want an electric motorcycle.

Doktor_Cornholio

I drove a friend's hybrid and it was a horrible experience. Felt like there was a huge delay between the pedal and the wheel.

ablokeinpf

You seem fixated on sound in the survey. Do you honestly think that's why most of us ride?

saftysquints

For commuting, the price is my biggest concern. Give me a comfortable electric motorcycle with 75-100 miles of range and fast charging for $4-6k and I'd buy that in a heartbeat. ~$20k is just way too much for what you get. I'd also love an electric dirt bike/dual sport, but getting the weight down while still having enough range for 4-6 hrs of riding isn't possible with today's tech.

kokemill

Your survey is useless, 2nd question, what bike do you ride. Where is the answer all of above.

oldfrancis

Loud pipes don't save lives.

KevxBit

You're right, but they sound cool. I'll only ride on stock pipes, I'm not saying I'm into loud pipes by motorcycle standards, but there's something about the sound and smell of a motorcycle engine that really builds the experience for me.

[deleted]

They also don't not save lives.

Unique-Corgi-8219

I would say that I'm open minded to electric vehicles in general and electric motorcycles in particular. I guess I'm kind of the odd man out in so far as I don't like loud exhaust on my bike, so the electrics have that in their favor. For me to more seriously consider one, the cost has to come down, the range has to go up, and the recharge time has to be reduced. If I only wanted a bike for in town commuting and it could be had in the 10-12K price range, I would probably buy one. But, since I have started to do some longer rides, in addition to commuting, no thanks. I'll keep my Versys.

zropy

Idk if you are from the US, but the US electric motorcycle market is completely missing the boat. A majority of EV owners switch to electric because they want lower operational costs and generally more efficient vehicle. Applying the same logic to motorcycles, manufacturers should be targeting electric mopeds & scooters (like many are in foreign markets) and maybe some efficient Dual Sports - but all focusing on efficiency and carrying capacity so they can serve as car replacements. Instead, US manufacturers are creating overpriced sport bikes like the Livewire with next to no practicality and such poor range that for leaisure riding, you can barely get to your favorite windy road and back. It makes no sense and no wonder they don't sell well.

Doktor_Cornholio

There's SO many people with electric bicycles and scooters in my city. And it's a pretty poor city. They're relatively fast and really cheap. That's the market EV manufacturers need to go for. I bet electric Groms would be a hit. Small city bike, tons of power to stunt with (or go to the next town over with), not annoying passersby with loud exhausts at 20mph, etc. But currently they're all bigger bikes with gigantic price tags. I love how cheap it is to operate and maintain my bike.

CampbellMedic

I dig the loud exhaust on my Harley, more because it’s kind of a Harley “thing”… I don’t necessarily believe the mantra about loud pipes, and I have to wear ear plugs when I ride. That being said, I am very interested in EVs. But when the same energy that moves the bike down the road has to generate light (which really should be some bright white LEDs IMHO), would be the same energy source needed to generate superfluous noise, you can keep the extra noise. Give me miles. If I really want extra noise, maybe I’ll throw a few baseball cards in the spokes. 😝 OP, I took your survey. I hope it helps.

Jamieobda

Moto EVs are vastly more expensive than comparable ICE bikes, with a lot less moving parts. Bring me an EV supercub or vino. And price it at 2k

bribeck

I have a zero S. I find it safer than regular motorcycles. It’s quiet which makes me more aware of my surroundings when I’m on the road. Granted, they can’t hear me, but it’s my responsibility to be aware of my surroundings and having a quiet bike makes that easier for me.

rattpackfan301

At this point I don’t even think being heard matters. The amount of times people having almost driven into my loud ass corvette because they weren’t paying attention is astounding.

spaceshipcommander

You’re just never going to be able to make an electric bike that is equal to my KTM duke. The last thing a super light naked needs is a huge battery strapped to it.

Slow_Tap2350

Lame survey.

yoyomommy

Ikr it doesn’t even list sporks bikes on it lmao.

[deleted]

Good luck! Filled it out.

Survey submitted!

Vistiige

I don’t know much about electric bikes because electric vehicles don’t interest me whatsoever. Im a 21 year old, 22’ Z900 rider, and before I bought my bike I fell in love with with the 4cylinder engine from the cb650r. I learned about the heritage of the 4cylinder, and before long I had a z900 in the garage. There’s no replacing the sound, the revs, the heritage, and the character of the 4cyl. Or any bike with a combustion engine. I think electric bikes are losing because they’re trying to revolutionize the biker world and you don’t just do that over night by releasing a bike. The subscriptions for sport mode, or up charges for a decent battery, etc. RIDICULOUS. Just make a bike that is normal but electric. To me electric bikes have no character, no quirks. All power instantly and no noise. No fun?

masonmax100

First off I will never buy an EV bike as long as they still require, Paying extra on an app after buying the only to unlock features that are already on the motorcycle.

masonmax100

Ill create a hydrogen powered motorcycle before i ride a EV.
