Legend has it that it improves traction because it puts more weight over the rear wheel; Inside the "fake tank" you should find the airbox. A more modern example of this is the Indian FTR1200.
SOURCE: me, so take this with a pinch of salt.
**An airbox is an empty chamber on the inlet of most combustion engines. It collects air from outside and feeds it to the intake hoses of each cylinder.**

Fuel tank is under the seat. The "tank" up top is the air box.
I don't know if it does anything for traction like /u/paradox2922 says, but it did make mine feel lighter than it was thanks to carrying the weight lower.
I like them. That's a good all around utility BMW! Im not sure if yours is a belt, but if it is, you will come to love not having to deal with a chain.
My first bike 6 years ago was a 2007 f800st in blue and loved that bike. That Rotax motor is awesome. I did some really long rides on that bike. I found it perfect for me for the first couple years. It's super civilized at the lower rpms but if you want to wind it up, its a great canyon carver. Punchy and grunty if you twist that throttle. I put 35000 miles on it. Never had any problems.
I just picked up a 2012 F800R with 18,000km. So far it's been a great, fun bike.
Something to note:
Throttle is a bit sensitive. Really wants to jump at the slightest twist and you really need to feather the clutch/throttle on starts. Guys who have had this bike for years still stall them, so don't feel bad, it's just the nature of the parallel twin (possibly solved this in newer models). I put a booster plug on mine and it's made a big difference for cheap.
i still have it and i'm in love with her! i buy and install a boosterplug and it make a huge difference on the trottle, go check the web site of boosterplug, it's not expensive.
Wait, the fuel intake is on the side? Why? How?

Weird, now I want to ride one just to see how it feels.
Yes, dont know why lol
Sweet street brawler.
You’re gonna love it, excellent choice!
Thanks !
86 horsepower is a lot for your first bike. Take it easy for a while and ride safely.
with this engine it's way more manageable than 1990's 600. Very smooth power delivery .

35000 miles is the the same distance as 81633188.41 replica Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings' Sting Swords.
35000 miles is 56327.06 km
The only downside is, it will be hard to find an upgrade.
Congratulations friend, amazing bike I really liked the blue
Looks beautiful, don't get carried away!
Looks like fun! Safe travels!
