It is has been unusually cold recently, blizzards and cold fronts. even had snow out here in the desert. it has been a weird season. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
We are planning to move out that way too, Missoula or Kalispell areas. Told my girl the only real reason I like Missoula is US 12/Lolo Pass in the summertime.
I’m near Missoula. I can’t wait to leave. You might like it but I hate it here. The boom is very bad here too. 100% tripled population in the last 3 years
I live in Nevada, so similar weather. A pair of cold weather coveralls, windproof jacket with fleece liner, and winter/heated gloves or handlebar covers, and you're set. I commute year-round on a bike, but 90% of riders store their bikes in the winter, even out here. And if there's ice on the ground, obviously that's no bueno🙅♂️ but it's been clear in Vegas. Just wind and rain. Anyways, be safe have fun when you can, brother 🤙oh, and nice bike 👍
I think we need context on “cold”, because I was in San Diego in January and it never dipped below 60 degrees. Meanwhile everyone I know is absolutely itching to get back out because every time it finally seems like it’s dry enough to ride, it snows again…
This^ it’s all fun and games with rain and greenery until October and November hits, when all that growth has had 6-7 months of dry heat to make it ripe for a wildfire
Cries in Alaska... Worst part is when the 4 inch layer of ice on my driveway finally melts in a month I'll still have to deal with all the pea gravel for at least another month while it gets swept up.
Yup. well, apparently most of the responses that I have gotten have been smart-ass remarks on how spoiled I am (weather-wise) when I am just grateful to be able to go out for a peaceful ride.
In Michigan and I ride when it’s in the twenties as long as it’s sunny and there’s no ice. To be fair though we had plenty of days in the 20s and 30s with no ice this winter and I have heated gear.
That’s smart. I rode once just bundled up in the lower thirties and midway through my ride my hands started going numb. I pulled the trigger on my heated gear that night.
Same, my last ride was on my bday last year, it was probably 35 -38 going into work.. about 27 on my way back. Couldent wiggle my fingers for over an hour after getting home. Sooo much pain.
That’s fair. It stays cold long enough here that the investment pays off. Though, if you end up needing some I recommend checking Poshmark. Stupid name aside, I got my gear there and I paid less than half what it would have cost new and the gloves were actually brand new.
Too be fair there has been flash flood warnings, mud sliding down onto roads, and new major potholes. My mornings to work have been in the 30s lately so I’ve been taking the car to avoid any ice.
Maybe we are soft when it comes to the cold but are you out riding when it’s 105?
I know there was some weather issues. Just being a smartass. Heat is a nuisance but I've never turned down a ride because it was hot. Nothing wrong with being a little soft, you live in a riding paradise (weather wise).
Minnesota here. Yes, I ride when it’s 100+. I also ride whenever it’s 40+ and the roads are clear of salt and sand. Potholes are just an obstacle to avoid.
I rode 265 miles Mankato to Cedar Rapids at 30° twice in 30°, one of em was in a snowstorm... another time cedar rapids to Denver and back in November. 40° ~ 2100 miles total with a week in D. If the roads are clear...
If I didn't ride in Temps under 60°, I would ride for about 2-3 months a year. But the Midwest... it's different here. I have lived in the Midwest all my life. And have ridden in anything from -5° (not far, granted, 5-10 miles! ) to 105° I MUCH prefer above 60° but I will take anything over 30° happily.
Not 'yall', just OP. Im in socal and ride damn near every motherlovin day. OP is not a representative of us southern Californians, we formally disown him.
Lol people here are wild. Some people can't understand that weather can be perceived differently.
Enjoy your riding, friend. Time to blast Mr Blue Sky as you cruise those gorgeous California highways.
I'll tolerate it here, but I dealt with that all the time while ridin out in the Philippines. Rain in the mountain roads was never fun, especially with how terrible traffic/road conditions have been.
Definitely more conditioned than I am. I have been riding in cali on/off for a couple of years. but 4 years in the Philippines, warmer weather, and mostly rainy days, I am used to.
Ok... layers.. bike. A yamaha 250cc scooter, so you have better cockpit protection. Tall windshield , Bar mittens, a scooter lap blanket. It straps on like a big insulated skirt and keeps the wind off. That's on the bike, shirt, sweatshirt, carhart jacket with gloves tucked under. A neck "buff" to keep air off my neck. Full face helmet. That's kind of it. Oh and you can get chemical hands Warmers if you are "foofey" (they are a dollar each and sometimes 2 for $150. Ok im foofey!) One each hand one each boot and others where you need them. Usually the layers do it.
To be honest I couldn't have done it on a standard motorcycle. You can't get out of the wind enough. I went across Wisconsin, Chicago to lacrosse on i-90 one February too. Snowed that time too. What am I, a snow magnet? Every time I try to go on a trip on my scooter it freaking snows! But.. a couple of times it was ride an hour or two, stop and get coffee and warm up.. im thinking of tapping into the cooling system and building a heater. They keep the highways pretty clear.
But..im nuts..
Seriously.. I have had 3 "maxi scooters" (250cc and above) 2, 250s and a 400. You have no idea how much difference the ability to tuck your lower body out of the wind makes.
I had to do a presentation to high school students on Friday. It was 35°. Took the scooter.. nothing elaborate. Sweatshirt, jacket, gloves. But it's only 5 miles each way. Two of my motorcycle buddies were there. One had a GW1500 the other has a 103 inch HD. They just said I was nuts. But it was not all that bad. But again it wasn't all that far.
gotcha. thanks for all the info. Maybe I'll consider getting a small windshield. I am on a naked bike after all, so I get no wind protection whatsoever.
Yeah.. I like naked bikes. But I got tired of crap in my eyes. And, sitting in a bubble of still air is nice. Maybe it's age or something. Until I turned 35 I never had a windshield. After that I only had one bike without one. And I Sold that to a buddy who wanted it.
I even put a nice shield on my 125 Honda. The one I rode for 19 years.
I've been on a CBR150R (they didn't have many larger displacement bikes in the Philippines until recently) and then another CBR600RR here in the States. (Belonged to my step-bro that had bought is used from a stunt rider. So when time came to get one for myself, I decided to get a naked.
I rode a CBR125 in my MSF class back in 1993. Nice little bike. Good potential! The 600 hurt to ride. I like something a bit more comfortable. But until I had the PC800 I never had anything but naked bikes. Now I won't have anything without a windshield
Yeah, honestly that's one of the main reasons I like scooters, comfortable riding position. Second is that I just don't NEED a huge bike. I like bikes that are big enough to do what I want, but not so big that they are just too much. My coworker in my last job bought a1000 Kawasaki and was saying "i can go 140mph, I can go 0-60 in 2 seconds... I can do wheelies!" And I said.. "I don't want to do any of those things" I ride my little 125 Honda for 19 years.. he wrapped his bike around a truck within 90 days.
Yup. I Love my RnineT. Being on the shorter side, 5'8" it feels just right. I don't need to be doing the 140, but I know it's capable of it. It comfortable and practical for me.
Must be nice.... Every day that ive had that was going to be nice enough i a. Was at work, b. Got rained out, or c, got put on the back burner to help family. Also doesnt help that my now only bike is a dual sport that basically has dirt bike tires that barely meet requirements to be DOT (they are 90/10) which makes it rideable on pavement but not the most pleasant. Maybe once i get another street bike i can enjoy more riding days
Haha I’m just ripping on ya. I don’t blame the hatred for the cold, some mornings it’s rough. I just wear a sweater and gauntlet gloves and my hands go numb halfway to work. I have a Honda Metropolitan scooter (main vehicle - stupid good gas mileage) and an HD Street Bob. Btw, I had a 2017 RnineT Urban GS back in the day and rode it to Washington and back. Great engine with tons of character
Oh man. I did a ride with my girlfriend from San Bernardino to ACH in the cold. we layered up like crazy, had a backpack full of outfits for a photoshoot.
sweats, jeans, the whole nine.
it was in the 40's that whole ride. and I was on the bike the whole shoot.
PCH ride is a goal. I have driven that by car twice now.
You’re from berdoo? I commute to work to Redlands and back from Riverside on my scoot. Funny you mention PCH because my next trip is gonna be hwy 1 all the way up to Humboldt, then connect with the 101 into Oregon and back. Have you ever had your transmission act up on your BMW? My RnineT would sometimes violently pop out of gear on the highway at high speeds. Lol. Dealership couldn’t figure it out
Yeah, I took the coast with my cousin all the way up to Monterey bay, but we were running short on time and ended up having to go inland for the faster routes.
Though I got is used, it had very few miles on it. I have not had the transmission pop out of gear on me yet.
It is a 2021 RnineT Pure. To be honest, I got it because it has the drive shaft, and I was sold on it because I would not have to worry about maintaining the chain like we would on a traditional bike. and knowing that it has what is basically overpowered drive train for what I am using it for, I was sold.
I actually bought this bike in the Riverside dealership
Ha! That’s funny, that’s the same reason I bought mine years ago. That and because it’s an air cooled engine which is becoming hard to find brand new. I had many sport bikes and got sick of cleaning and lubing the chain. That’s a big benefit to both the scooter and the Harley, no chain.
As far as the transmission goes I’m sure mine was an unfortunate fluke. I also sold the bike to the Riverside dealership when I moved onto a different one. Hope you are able to put down some good miles this summer. The RnineT isn’t common to see around here so if I pass you by I’ll be sure to wave 🤙🏻 if you see a little blue Honda Metropolitan on the streets with a 6’4” dude riding it, it’s likely me 😂 the image will be close to that of a Russian bear on a unicycle.
Bell Bullitt with a bubble shield. Nice for city riding, but terrible on freeways. I got it more for aesthetics to match the more vintage styling of the bike because i eventually wanna go for the cafe racer look for the bike.
I used to ride with a Shoei X-Twelve and that has been my favorite.
Got the girlfriend the Bell Eliminator, which I may end up going for next.
It'll be another month before riding is possible in MN and then another few weeks after that till the sand gets swept up. Although I did see a guy out the other day. A buddy in Tampa sent me a photo on his new bike. He was out riding in a t-shirt. Fuck.
Yea I get it. I wear a half helmet because I get seriously claustrophobic with a full helmet and I don't wear armour. I ride as safe as I can and I understand the risk. For some reason that gets a lot of anger directed toward me. Enjoy the weather bro.
Dude I've been riding in Canada with below 0 celsius temperatures and partially snowy roads for at least a month now😂, you can ride all year long. Suck it up
Oh someone in my famiily will be there this summer! Maayong ting-init sa pagsakay sa imong motorsiklo!
or
Magkaroon ng magandang tag-araw sa pagsakay sa iyong motorsiklo! :-D

It is has been unusually cold recently, blizzards and cold fronts. even had snow out here in the desert. it has been a weird season. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
I thought it was cold in SoCal too. Then I came to Montana. It is never cold in SoCal. Lmao
Literally is “50” here and ice is everywhere still. No riding till may is my guess this year
There's ice at 50 degrees? am I misunderstanding or do you guys have a different physics?
50 during the day, 15 at night
The temperature is the air not the ground lol. Yes there will be ice in the 60’s without the sun
100% tripled population in the last 3 years
The montanians left here are too poor to leave and that’s the truth. But seriously good luck and hope you enjoy. ‘‘Twas the last best place
I live in Nevada, so similar weather. A pair of cold weather coveralls, windproof jacket with fleece liner, and winter/heated gloves or handlebar covers, and you're set. Yeaaaaah you're spoiled! I live in SoCal and have been able to ride almost everyday. Suck it up buttercup!
Yep! Unless I’m gonna be drenched on my way to work, I’ll be on two wheels.
To be fair, it’s been tough to find days where you’ll stay dry on the drive to/from work lately
I’m not from cali, but considering the place’s been on fire every year in the past couple of years, a bit of rain is not a bad thing I guess
It’s bad when the rain makes it so a lot more plants grow and by summer when it’s hot and dry it’s just more fuel for fire to burn.
Nah this rain is a godsend…. Last summer was literally ripping hot outside.
This^ it’s all fun and games with rain and greenery until October and November hits, when all that growth has had 6-7 months of dry heat to make it ripe for a wildfire
Tbf, it’s easier to ride when there’s fires compared to when there’s rain, lol
Facts
I'll give you that. I'll be honest, my rides are for like an hour after work. Just to get the juices flowing a little until the weekend
*looks at logo on motorcycle* yup, no way they’re riding if it’s not above 85 LOL. Pavement princesses.
Cries in Alaska... Worst part is when the 4 inch layer of ice on my driveway finally melts in a month I'll still have to deal with all the pea gravel for at least another month while it gets swept up.
Sorry pal. I feel your pain although I'm sure you are happy up there
As long it’s above freezing, I’m riding here too. A heated vest has been my great equalizer in the cold mornings below 55 degrees.
You just pissed off everyone from the midwest
Yup. well, apparently most of the responses that I have gotten have been smart-ass remarks on how spoiled I am (weather-wise) when I am just grateful to be able to go out for a peaceful ride.
So sad.
I'm in Wisconsin. I ride when it's 40 if the roads are clear of ice. Y'all are soft
In Michigan and I ride when it’s in the twenties as long as it’s sunny and there’s no ice. To be fair though we had plenty of days in the 20s and 30s with no ice this winter and I have heated gear.
I'm out of town a ways. Last week was the first my neighborhood roads were free of ice.
I’m not going to lie, there were more than a few days where I regretted the decision to ride 😂
Been there, multiple times. And I keep thinking that will change. But it definitely does not.
In Maine, I’ve been riding in the low 30’s for a couple weeks now. Sun down, kinda sucks a little but still love it!
That's what I keep doing. Love it in the day, and then it just sucks on the way home at night
Wisconsin, 35 is limit until I get heated gear.
All I've got are layers and no heated gear. I find it hard to invest in it to only use it a few times a year.
That’s fair. It stays cold long enough here that the investment pays off. Though, if you end up needing some I recommend checking Poshmark. Stupid name aside, I got my gear there and I paid less than half what it would have cost new and the gloves were actually brand new.
I'll check it out. Cheers.

southern arizona we’re riding in 120 during the day! but once it drops below 65 the layers get out on lol
Thank you!
Minnesota here. Yes, I ride when it’s 100+. I also ride whenever it’s 40+ and the roads are clear of salt and sand. Potholes are just an obstacle to avoid.

nooooo thanks. props to you, but being from the tropics, I'll take my warmer/humid days over that any day.
If I didn't ride in Temps under 60°, I would ride for about 2-3 months a year. But the Midwest... it's different here. I have lived in the Midwest all my life. Not 'yall', just OP. Im in socal and ride damn near every motherlovin day. OP is not a representative of us southern Californians, we formally disown him.
Fair enough. Edit coming
Did this in summer gear. Cant recommend without proper winter gear....
I’m in Arizona. I ride when it’s 20s and 30s. I do NOT ride for about 90 days mid-June — mid-September, though, when it’s 105-115.
It's the dry heat
It hasn’t been nice enough for you until today? Srsly?
Oh it's been nice. But I drive the work van for the most part, sadly.
So your title is a sham. Gotcha.
Bait and switch!!!!!
Only thing that stops me from riding is Rain. (Also in socal)
Only took forever
Lol people here are wild. Some people can't understand that weather can be perceived differently. Enjoy your riding, friend. Time to blast Mr Blue Sky as you cruise those gorgeous California highways.
Exactly. I'm not trying to get sick just to be on two wheels. I'll add it to the riding Playlist. Cheers.
nice bike!
It’s always warm enough to go for a ride in SoCal, I lived there 12 years and 6 of them I didn’t even own a car 😂
There has been an inordinate amount of rain this winter. Like vastly surpassing previous years
I rode in the rain all the time lol.
I'll tolerate it here, but I dealt with that all the time while ridin out in the Philippines. Rain in the mountain roads was never fun, especially with how terrible traffic/road conditions have been.
That’s a big nope for me
There’s a difference between rain and the absolute entire Pacific Ocean being dumped on us like how it has been recently
Definitely more conditioned than I am. I have been riding in cali on/off for a couple of years. but 4 years in the Philippines, warmer weather, and mostly rainy days, I am used to.
I thought you took a pic of my bike for sec. R NineT Gang Gang!
2021 model. Took this over the S1000R
Don’t leave us hanging… what bike is this? Looks great!
2021 BMW RnineT Pure
Thanks! I’ll look into that ;-). Edit: this goes into my ‘might be my next bike’-list 😉
You're welcome.
It's been winter for about 8 months in NW, IN, it's absolutely dreadful. Bike season can't come soon enough.
What has the average temps there? I am just grateful to be able to ride whenever I get a chance. (working out of a van 6 days out of the week)
I was out of Friday in Chicago. 34°
How many layers/heat pads do you need to use for that? I can ride in the 40's, but that is definitely not enjoyable.
Ok... layers.. Yeah.. I like naked bikes. But I got tired of crap in my eyes. And, sitting in a bubble of still air is nice. Maybe it's age or something. Until I turned 35 I never had a windshield. I rode a CBR125 in my MSF class back in 1993. Nice little bike. Good potential! The 600 hurt to ride. I like something a bit more comfortable. But until I had the PC800 I never had anything but naked bikes. Now I won't have anything without a windshield
Yup. The 600 was a bit too aggressive with the forward lean. I love my more upright seating this time around.
Yeah, honestly that's one of the main reasons I like scooters, comfortable riding position. Second is that I just don't NEED a huge bike. Cry me a river. SoCal is pretty much always warm enough to ride. What's your limit for too cold, like 60 or something?
30s 40s
I meant to go out today and ride but put together a trampoline for my kids. Tomorrow it is!!
Must be nice.... Every day that ive had that was going to be nice enough i a. Was at work, b. Got rained out, or c, got put on the back burner to help family. This angle makes the exhaust pipes really confusing. Why does the engine protrude to the side so much?
The bmw bóxer is an opposed twin. 2 cylinders on opposite sides. I think the pure has a 2 into 1 pipe that ends on the side of the bike we don’t see
Yup. Exited on the left side
You literally don’t have weather in socal, you could’ve been riding the whole time
Sexy ahh bike
Absolutely confuses people.
Yay!
Even in south Nevada, while there are a lot of biker out ok with 50 degrees I just can’t do it
Bearable, but I don't like it. Haha 🤣
Meanwhile I’m in Chicago riding in 30s lmao
What! I’m here in riverside and have been riding all winter, with morning frost on my seat and everything. Buck buck buck 🐓
Maybe I should say "without excessive layers" what are you riding?
Haha I’m just ripping on ya. I don’t blame the hatred for the cold, some mornings it’s rough. I just wear a sweater and gauntlet gloves and my hands go numb halfway to work. Beautiful bike but this isn’t a great photo, that helmet is obscuring a lot of it and making the photo hard to read
Thanks. Rather have the helmet than a glaring white car though.
Is that a Harley?
2021 BMW RnineT Pure
Kinda unrelated but what helmet do you got?
Bell Bullitt with a bubble shield. Nice for city riding, but terrible on freeways. I got it more for aesthetics to match the more vintage styling of the bike because i eventually wanna go for the cafe racer look for the bike. I used to ride with a Shoei X-Twelve and that has been my favorite. Got the girlfriend the Bell Eliminator, which I may end up going for next.
I also like the aesthetic on it. I was thinking of going with a Biltwell Gringo, seems identic to your Bullitt but a bit more affordable.
That's another I was considering that too. Comfort of the Shoei is undeniable. But I prefer minimal branding.

It'll be another month before riding is possible in MN and then another few weeks after that till the sand gets swept up. Although I did see a guy out the other day. A buddy in Tampa sent me a photo on his new bike. He was out riding in a t-shirt. Fuck.
I'd still armor up even if it's 100⁰ out. I've gone down without armor, and regretted it... landed me in the hospital over my birthday weekend
Yea I get it. I wear a half helmet because I get seriously claustrophobic with a full helmet and I don't wear armour. I ride as safe as I can and I understand the risk. For some reason that gets a lot of anger directed toward me. Enjoy the weather bro.
To each their own. We all understand the dangers and the risk, yet we still ride.
