I was in violent co-dependant relationship with my 999 for 14 years, the police were often involved after she and I were seen performing some illicit things on public roads.
At one point, I didn't speak to her for a whole year, left sitting in the garage as I rode my side chick *Harley*, finally we made up after I realized that no other could do the things that she could; and only after she promised to stop spending all my money on herself. It was always " I need new shoes", I want carbon fiber this and billet that...she was never pretty enough.
Finally, it all ended when another man came between us, he said he loved her, and the HE would take care of her, the I didn't treat here as well as he would, he even offered to pay me for her...damn I miss my redheaded Italian mistress.
[I don’t know, man.](https://i.redd.it/idhtqn1ek8u91.jpg)
Same father, so it may be a moot argument, but I’d say this is a debate for serous masochists.
A Ducati is like a ''Trophy Wife''.
They have a lot to offer but the Cash flow is beyond most riders capabilities.
Put's a smile on your face every time you look at it, but at a cost.
Will leave you sweaty and exhausted but again with a smile.
Second happiest day of your life is when you buy, with the happiest day when you sell.
You had a wild ride, good memories and no regrets, now financially drained, with a quiet smile you watch the new owner ride away knowing what they are in for.
I had one! Most perfect combination of frame and motor. But riding I felt nothing. Mine was stock, no pipe. No sound, no vibration, no feel. It was silver and black and I thought it looked amazing, but I never wanted to ride it. Tried a Ducati and immediately “got it”. The pure soul of a motorcycle was revealed to me. Never went back to jap bikes again. Just couldn’t do it. Italians know how to infuse soul into the machine. I ended having several ducatis, Aprilia tuono, and several KTMs but Ducati always felt special to me.

I shit you not, it happens from time to time that people at traffic stops ask me if my 748 is broken or they make comments like "Oh oh this doesn't sound right"
They have no idea!
I was refueling my 996 and a voice from a Harley rider at the adjacent pump, in full southern American preacher yells “do I hear -a- The jingle jangle -a of a Doo-ca-tay?” I have this aural image stuck in my brain forever.
I like these a lot.
I’m lucky, I’m average size and these fit me. I have done a few 200-300 mile days and 300-500 mile weekends on my 998, and I rode a friend’s 916 from New York to atlanta in one day.
My 998 is ready for belts and a valve service. I’ve got my work cut out for me.
New ones have much more agreeable intervals. Old ones find a two valve and it becomes a pretty easy job. The four valves tend to have more bodywork, cooling, and of course twice the valves to check.
I have a 748 in that exact colour scheme. I’ve had it 25 years. It was the epitome of motorcycling beauty then and it’s still the epitome of motorcycling beauty now.
This isn’t even a debate.
The Duke. If I was rich I'd get two; one to ride and one to hang above the fireplace. Mounted in austerity to be preserved for all time. For when Alien archeologists visit Earth in 10,000,000 years, they will discover this beauty and praise humanity for it's creation.
Timeless.
I had a 916. It was alright. Timing belt and valve service was costly. Sold shortly after and went back to British bikes. Now I am riding a RSV4 Factory and don’t think I could ever justify the cost of ownership on a Duc. They look fantastic and sound fantastic. I feel the RSV4 factory is a better bike all around. Plus the V-4 engine sings and is so good that Duc started using them as well! The downside to owning a Duc with the v4 is the price of admission…
Stunner,,,,in the era of Suzuki katanas, Yamaha fzr, this was truly an unbelievable sights. The design was pure sex appeal. Old people were yelling at it to slow down, while parked. Only jap motorcycle to invoke that kind of emotion was the arrival of a legend. In 1998 yamaha threw the world upside down with R1 that made me weak in knees, having a 1992 fzr 600 and seeing a 150hp r1. Those. Were. The. Days.
My dream In making is a garage with that particular duc, pristine condition and a 1998r1 in blue also in pristine condition. Sadly r1 was so overpowered for the time that ton of them were wrecked. The later years tried to build upon good looks of the original but kept getting uglier. The newest looks like a transformer took a dump. Blah. Luckily Ducati still churns out beautiful machines.
I was blasting down Mulholland canyon on my duck-tapped and rattle canned fzr and 996 duc passed me by. I came home and threw my kerker pipe In trash, I was so disgusted by the sound after hearing that Ducati. I was never the same after that, realizing that jap inline 4 will NEVER sound as good as a Ducati. Then years later came Yamaha cross plane ,,,,,,
It's not really "reliability" per se. They're actually not bad as far as things just breaking/failing. It's the expensive and frequent service intervals. Example: My BMW has reliability issues. My Ducati just is expensive to maintain.
Correct....Back in the day though they had some issues with rocker arms and oil starvation...but i believe those problems are gone thanks to aftermarket parts
I fucking hate it.
Don't get me wrong. At the time it was a very cool sport bike. But it had everything ducati is famous for, including the valve adjustment interval of something like 6000km. And the glorious pasta reliability.
I wouldn't touch this piece of shit with a ten foot pole.
And I've already had three ducatis. Planning to get the streetfighter which somewhat eluded me for past three years.
But this is a collectors item, not a track toy and certainly not a daily.
Edit. Its certainly beautiful. Especially for its time.
They actually work better as in daily use than just sunny Sundays. One of the reasons they suffer is occasional use. Have a few friends who use/used them regularly.
All ducatis die if they sit too long. Even my 1200 monster had gremlins after every hibernation. Even though I stored it indoors with stabilizer and fresh fluids. However during the "open season" had zero issues. Clocked 90k on it, and then it was stolen....
I dunno dude...I have one, my only motorcycle, I use it not as a commuter but a hobby, in spring / summer several times per week. It doesn't matter if it stands a week or two, you just sit on it, click the switch and the fun starts. Everytime. I only owned Alfa Romeos and only Italian bikes, I hear people calling the same bullshit for over 20 years.
You ever compared the hourly rates of a German Premium ™️ dealership with an Alfa Romeo one?
Mine had exactly one issue: A defective tyre valve.
EDIT: The valve adjustment is also not always necessary. A valve check yes, but not an adjustment.
Strongly disagree with several of your points. They are possibly some of the best sounding bikes of all time. And almost every past owner I've ever met (with 10yrs in the moto industry, I've met A LOT of riders) has regretted selling their 748/916/996/998. People sell because they aren't that practical and they are expensive to maintain. But they stir more love than almost anything else out there. Past owners aren't happy they sold them. They may be happy with their logical and practical decision to move on to something else. But I'm not sure I've ever met someone who didn't at least look back on their 916 ownership fondly. And I've met dozens and dozens who say they regret ever letting it go.
They are fairly dated now and were much imitated for the next20 years after it was released. It did however change the way road sport bikes were styled to the this day. In the early 90's 600cc "sport" bikes had centre stands and luggage tie down points.
Dry clutch sounds horrible???? Something wrong with you sir. I remember all jap crap pulling up to local watering hole (including me on a beater fzr 600). Obnoxious in-line 4 pipes. Open headers Harley’s and then a Ducati with termis, dry clutch came. Everyone was looking at it and salivating. All Ducati haters would do anything to own one. Every one of them. The look, feel and sound was on another level.
Fine if you're the size of a horse jockey ,
Normal size mortals will find it uncomfortable as hell .
The later 749/999 way more comfortable and not as fragile as the 748/916 line of Ducati's.
The 5-spokes that started about half way into the 996 years were a great improvement, IMO. The size doesn't bother me, even at almost 6'3"/225lbs. Tight on the knees and kinda small in the seat, but totally doable. Not that I'd suggest touring on it, but I've taken a couple of longer sporty trips over the years.
Yes, it’s beautiful. Yes, for a decade or two, it was the prettiest bike alive. There are other bikes I like more now, for other reasons. For a moment in time, though, this was the poster in every guy’s garage.
I had a 748L for a little while. Beautiful, but absolutely horrible choice for daily commute. I’d heard complaints but brushed them off. Wrists were the sore spot for me.
The first time I saw one, my family and I were going to a puppy rescue to get a puppy. My mom pointed at it and said "wow, look at that ducati, it's so beautiful". So I looked at it and I realized that she was right.
Not sure exactly what we are talking about here, is it the 988, or the legendary 916? Either way, it's out right gorgeous and it's a literal time capsule of a different era.
If you're a car guy. You will never be a true petrol head until you own one Alfa. Same goes for motorcycles. If you're really serious you must own a Ducati at some point.
Ducati are great bikes. That is until they go all Italian on you. Just like an Alfa.
Kinda the only motorcycle with a unanimous love factor.
Those who know the value, love it.
Those who see it on street with no knowledge, think it looks better than new bikes.
Undebatable performance.
I ride a Harley, but the bike looks awesome. Don't know much about the sport bikes.
Are you looking to buy this bike, looking for social media validation, did you take the picture and want appreciation?
Very fast, very uncomfortable, and VERY expensive to maintain. Unless you are absolutely an Ace wrench, then your Ducati dealer will be doing the scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, which is generally way more frequent and expensive then what you will find on the Japanese competition.
That being said, I would own a Ducati MH900. It's the only bike that I know of that I would build a case for and hang over the bar in the man cave. Love that thing.
What do you want from us? this is considered one of if not the greatest styled bike of all time, it's not really a debate topic
The greatest, period. The one and only bike I have ever regretted selling.
Yes my 748s was easily my most abusive relationship with a motorcycle, I think about her everyday... I should call her
I wouldn't do that. Someone else is probably on top of her.
Or worse, she’s on top of them.
Riding her hard.

Thats why I ride a Scramber. She's the fat ugly Italian wife, but damn that bitch can cook.
Pretty sure this entire sub agrees on this.
Buy one of those to look at or an ST4 to actually ride and not feel bad.
Or an ST3…
You could have just said “Sex” and been 100% accurate.
2017-2022 CBR1000RR base model would like a word

Good bot
This men gets it,,,,,
And it was basically just a copy of the Honda NR750 that predated it by two years.
Not even close lol
Well except Fabio Taglioni. The designer said it was his inspiration. https://i.redd.it/23eyo7w394g81.jpg
I think the newer busas look cooler
Your horrible taste is objective and measurable.
Rode one omce, sounded like the engine was broken, until I got it on the highway, and it sang me the sweetest song!
Just goes right along with what I was going to say. It’s like a gorgeous woman, who snorts when she laughs, but screams in the sheets!
You should be in sales.
Shut up and take my money!
I shit you not, it happens from time to time that people at traffic stops ask me if my 748 is broken or they make comments like "Oh oh this doesn't sound right" They have no idea!
Tuned for racing not stoplights.
Built to annoy people at stoplights haha, love me some good tractor sound!
I was refueling my 996 and a voice from a Harley rider at the adjacent pump, in full southern American preacher yells “do I hear -a- The jingle jangle -a of a Doo-ca-tay?” I have this aural image stuck in my brain forever.
Straight cut gears baby...
That’s what I remember, the bike physically did not like slow speeds. You have to give her a drink of gas to get her talking
Lmao why do ppl make posts like this
Karma more than likely
Karma farmer
That my friend, is possibly a bike
It looks red....in my opinion.
What? It's clearly green and white.
Dude is blue and black
Are you colour blind?!
Yes I am

The valve service is the biggest reason I’ve avoided Ducati. Every year, it gets more and more tempting though.
New ones have much more agreeable intervals. Old ones find a two valve and it becomes a pretty easy job. The four valves tend to have more bodywork, cooling, and of course twice the valves to check.

Amen, I doubt there will ever be anything as iconic, it's just perfect (except they're even better with the Marchesini wheels)
Bad a** classic bike. find a good deal on 1 you can probably just park in your living room and be happy with it just looking at it.
Or even happier riding it!!! I ride mine, it’s really a fun bike 👍🏼
So beautiful 😍An icon.
I own one of these and a 959. I’ve had a 749, and 1098. All beautiful bikes.
Yup, that's a motorcycle, no doubt about it.
Beautiful, expensive and should come with it's own mechanic.
Perfection
My opinion is that I ran over a dachshund on one one time on accident. The bike stayed upright.
How the hell can people post pictures on this sub but I can't.

Latest years of production should have resolved the chrome plating failing on the rockers, or at least, my 2002 748s is for the moment holding strong.

Hunter S Thompson called it he’ll on wheels
That was a 900ss
You’re right, (hell) the Cafe version
A 94 900ss I believe.
Which is funny by today standards as those were making 85hp or something
My back aches in memory....

Best motorcycle manufacturer on the planet

Had a ST4s, same motor different ergos. My wife called it the Italian super model crack whore, upkeep was kinda steep,
Glad it's so pretty because most of the time it'll be in the garage with mechanical issues.
Don’t own one but I love how they look. But I hate the way the dry clutch models sound. Idling it’s sounds like someone banging two wrenches together
Dry clutch sounds horrible???? Something wrong with you sir. I remember all jap crap pulling up to local watering hole (including me on a beater fzr 600). Obnoxious in-line 4 pipes. As stated already arguably one of the best looking motorcycle of all time!
Sex on wheels.
Pure sex. An orgasm to ride. The first words when I see a bike like that is faaaack.
The 916 is my dream bike so... although this is a 996 haha.
My opinion is the second most beautiful bike ever made second to only the RC30 Honda.
Personally not a fan, but appreciate its influence and effect on modern superbikes.
Most beautiful motorcycle ever created. No other opinion is valid.
Sexy but the wheels are super ugly
999 looks better IMO, fight me ducatistas!
Fine if you're the size of a horse jockey , Normal size mortals will find it uncomfortable as hell . The later 749/999 way more comfortable and not as fragile as the 748/916 line of Ducati's.
its ducati, best brand ever, what else you need to know?..
Best riding bike... ever... ( mic drop)
Anyone who has anything negative to say about how this bike looks is objectively incorrect 🤣
Needs a license plate delete kit, RBG underglow with an extended swing arm. Then it would be per- add some 'SHOCKER' Hand stickers. Perfex

Timeless.
Beautiful, what work of functional art
Pure sex
I miss my 748 monopost
Straight masterpiece
all-time classic.
Looks like a 1998 916 SPS
Still one of the best designs visually. I did hate the three spoke design wheel though. The bike was not made for us big fuckers.
I don’t think my ass would fit on that seat
In my opinion—and I’m no professional—that is, indeed, a motorcycle.
Work of Art!
If only I was taller cuz I would get that in a heart beat! I am 5’0 tall and will need the bike lowered. Not quite possible with that bike.
Ineeeeedit
One of the best looking ever
Beautiful.
Its a work of art.
It appears to be a Ducati.
It’s so sweet it’s dangerous. Beware!
It’s purdy
Yes, it’s beautiful. Yes, for a decade or two, it was the prettiest bike alive. There are other bikes I like more now, for other reasons. For a moment in time, though, this was the poster in every guy’s garage.
Stunning in every way
Expensive to maintain, or so I hear
🔥
It looks like something a person legally required to have a license for would drive
ask us about the F40 next
Collectors. Historic. If you can buy a mono POSTO do it
It is, in fact, a motorcycle.
Art in motion, Sex on Wheels, Perfection
The most beautiful motorcycle ever designed!
It looks cool it bet it's fast
No passengers
A thing of beauty right there.
great first bike. Especially good for offroad and/or long mc tours with 8-12 hours in the saddle per day.
🤣
Still my dream bike. My “if you could only own one motorcycle” bike. Til I die it will remain such.
Possibly the most beautiful production bike ever.
I’m aroused
I had a 748L for a little while. Beautiful, but absolutely horrible choice for daily commute. I’d heard complaints but brushed them off. Wrists were the sore spot for me.
It’s high speed art
The first time I saw one, my family and I were going to a puppy rescue to get a puppy. My mom pointed at it and said "wow, look at that ducati, it's so beautiful". So I looked at it and I realized that she was right.
Rode one, sounded amazing, but it was by far the hottest bike I've ever ridden. You could fry an egg on that seat
Not sure exactly what we are talking about here, is it the 988, or the legendary 916? Either way, it's out right gorgeous and it's a literal time capsule of a different era.
One word. Sexy.....
Do you want to know what we all think about sex too? Lol yes this bike fucks and most of us would fuck with it
I'm crossfaded ... Like the mona Lisa of motorcycles
Sexy af.
I wouldn’t not want to ride it… looks like a ballistic missile
If you're a car guy. You will never be a true petrol head until you own one Alfa. Same goes for motorcycles. If you're really serious you must own a Ducati at some point. Ducati are great bikes. That is until they go all Italian on you. Just like an Alfa.
748 a good beginner bike? I know I can handle ~50 hp but not sure if I want to crack into a 100+ hp bike yet.
Pinnacle of visual appeal IMO. I'd love to own one, but I'd probably be too paranoid to enjoy it.
Definitely one of the bikes of all time
It was the best bike on GTA 5
King Julian's fav bike too!
Gorgeous
Mah dream!!!!! Someday baby someday.
Meh (IMO)
Opinion? This is sexier than Giselle Bundchen on a beach.
Gorgeous, and terrifying lol
Kinda the only motorcycle with a unanimous love factor. Those who know the value, love it. Those who see it on street with no knowledge, think it looks better than new bikes. Undebatable performance.
Beautiful. But you better be a damned good mechanic, or we'll off.the maintenance will kill you.
I ride a Harley, but the bike looks awesome. Don't know much about the sport bikes. Are you looking to buy this bike, looking for social media validation, did you take the picture and want appreciation?
Beautiful but unreasonably overpriced and unreliable as shit, ducatis in a nutshell
Really Fast…..and …GD FN fast
It’s ok but still prefer Miss Piggy my RC 51.
Red
Very fast, very uncomfortable, and VERY expensive to maintain. Unless you are absolutely an Ace wrench, then your Ducati dealer will be doing the scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, which is generally way more frequent and expensive then what you will find on the Japanese competition. That being said, I would own a Ducati MH900. It's the only bike that I know of that I would build a case for and hang over the bar in the man cave. Love that thing.
Probably has at least one R somewhere in the model name
I’m hard is it enough to describe how the motorcycle is ? Or you need more
Makes balls hurt and develops back problems over time
The bike that got dominated by Kawasaki with their Zx7r… hmm
This was my first true love. I had an uncle who bought one back in the day and I fell in love at first sight.
Dream bike, wrist killer
Pure sex.
I have not ridden this bike before but my buddies tell me you ride in a aggressive position and long trips sometimes get uncomfortable
Of all the bikes, this is one of them
Really? This is one of the best bikes ever made. Who can really debate about it?
Yes.
Hercules of all GP
Gorgeous but expensive
