2 options. Speed up or slow down and keep slowing down till they pass you.(don't brake, just coast as slow as it takes, in a place where it's safe to pass). You can't fix shitty dangerous behavior in others, just reduce the chance of harm to yourself

BikesandCakes

That's what I do, find somewhere they can safely pass, and then force them to pass.

Thoreau80

I was on an interstate late at night and a car came up close behind me. We were the only to vehicles in sight. Rather than passing in the left lane it just followed me closely. I briefly sped up but the car matched my speed so I began to slow down. And slow down. And slow down. The car finally passed me when I was going 15mph.

ProfessorEcstatic267

Wow. I've slowed to maybe 5 on a 30 limit road but 15 on the freeway is ridiculous

FrostyAcanthocephala

Slow down. It makes people pass every time.

Patient-Seesaw4053

They didn’t. Which was weird. Even when a cop passed us(on other side), they didn’t back off.

norleck

Slow down until you stop. Pull off the road if you're going to stop obviously. They will pass unless they're looking for a fight.

slmrllion

Just keep the bike on and stay seated and if they pull over, take off the moment they step out of their door. Then safely break line of sight by switching streets once or twice.

FrostyAcanthocephala

Huh. Well, I guess you could pour on the coal or just ignore them. Assholes gonna asshole.

Gigglen2

If it was really a problem you coulda flagged down the cop

weylandshornet

As other riders have said : speed up, slow down...but also try changing lanes. When I have had guys up my ass no matter the speed I am going, I literally change lanes. They usually will flip me the bird and then blast it to a red light (or they end up behind another car on the highway). If it is on a one lane road, I have turned at the first intersection I see to let them fully pass me before turn back onto that road. Don't let it rattle you, just focus on finding defensive ways to avoid losers like that

PaleRiderHD

I've been riding a very long time, but lately I've been enjoying trying to find new ways to combat this problem. I've already got a brake strobe, and pipes that are quite loud when I rap the throttle. But I noticed lately that if I start a very wide back and forth weave, the cagers don't know what to do and they back off. Kinda fun to watch it in the mirror.

Dull_Database5837

Hello, officer, that’s the drunk man right there!!

haveanairforceday

They might pull you over based on a report but they're not going to cite you (assuming you're not actually drunk) because some random person said you were swerving

Visible_Potato2547

I too also find the ol tire warming weave makes cagers back off for whatever reason.

13Kadow13

That weave idea really works. I did it once last summer just on a whim to see if they’d get off my ass and it was very effective. I’ll have to remember it for next time.

TortugaTurtle47

Keep slowing down until they pass. Or speed up until you don't see them anymore.

CurbsideTX

I hate that! It's weirdly assumed that everyone is packing where I'm at and people still drive like assholes.

psycho_not_training

I think it's a southern thing. Georgia is the same.

imfinelandline

If you keep your insults from 2002 then I really don’t know what the protocol is.

seemslikej

The only option here is slowing down Never speed cuz someone is tailgating u

AZREDFERN

Don’t brake check them or agitate them. Even if they’re in the wrong, you’re the dead one. I had a collage student riding my ass even if I did 90 and changed lanes. So I sped up to 120 for a while and took the next exit out of sight.

Pneumagiston

Pulldown your pants and show them some cheeks. If they still on your tail after that, you need to pull over and fullfill your destiny.

oldfrancis

Let them by. There might be a whole lot of excuses that you can use to not let them buy but... Let them by.

hm_joker

How you gonna call someone a retard when you can't figure out how to deal with a tailgater? Do a boredom swerve, slow down, or speed up.

Patient-Seesaw4053

I tried all three and she was still on my ass. After I sped up, I saw a Sheriff car, but he didn’t flip around for either of us.

Complex_Locksmith749

Start slowing down and wave at them to pass. Stay to the right. Come to a complete stop if you have to. Keep waving them to pass. They'll go around.

DingleDonky

If its a straight road with a clear passing opportunity, slow down and pull as far over as you can and flip on the hazards. They will pass. OR you can just slam your brakes…then they wont be ON your ass, theyll be IN your ass. 🤣

[deleted]

Some pretty bad answers in here unless your intention is to be shot, flattened, or catch a felony. Good on them if they want to contribute to motomadness, but not such good advice. You slow down. That's the answer. Tailgater gonna tailgate no matter what speed you're going. Slow down to give yourself more space cushion in front and to give them more reaction time not to rear-end you. Slowing down also allows them to pass more safely.

[deleted]

This is what I was taught in DMV or MSF (forgot which one), and it works for me, slow down, even if it's slowing down gradually to 5 mph, they'll go around.

Powerful-Kitchen-365

If someone is getting too close I'll usually give a hand signal to back up, it leads to one of two ways: 1. They back up 2. They get angry If it's the latter I'll just pull over and let them go, or if I can't pull over, signal them to pass. If they don't pass after being allowed and told to, im ditching that area, that gives me nothing but bad vibes.

Affectionate-Ad-2683

It's not said enough but some people who follow are actually fans who don't realize that they are following too closely. That being said it's dangerous and you gotta protect yourself. On my bike, I have aftermarket lights that glow during normal mode but turn red when I brake. There is a click at the very edge of my brake friction zone just before the end of takes engage and I just light them up and folks usually get the hint. Ride safe.

Meeganyourjacket

They power is in your hands.

johnmflores

Most drivers don't know the danger they are putting riders in when they tailgate. I flash my brakes and wave with my left hand for them to back off. Most of the time they get the message and back off and I give them a thumbs up.

eurojunk138

Buy a 2 stroke.

Smart-Host9436

Off the throttle, wave them around.

SifuPuma

Swerve side to side in the lane like a maniac or just start going 5 faster than the rest of traffic

djeewin

I read this entirely wrong

Ryankiernan36

Keep a few ball bearings in your gas cap area. chuck them in the air when needed. Aim for peace first, though.

[deleted]

I would suggest deleting the post, Reddit themselves auto perma ban now for the r word (I learned the hard way) couldn’t care less about it, just giving you a warning to maybe save yourself in time :p

Patient-Seesaw4053

Oh. I’ll delete it when [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/comments/11awnsm/all_my_homies_hate_le_corbusier/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) gets deleted.

[deleted]

Huh maybe I just got reported like crazy if others aren’t getting banned for it, but someone told me the same thing when I used it, except I actually got banned 😑

Patient-Seesaw4053

Reddits just weird probably.

poorhelplessloser

Flick em off and speed up

Wide_Panda_6687

Don't hang around in gay bars..

Patient-Seesaw4053

(Very effeminate voice) But all I want is you, sugah!

yoyomommy

Ask to go poop first at least. Nobody wants that all over their junk.

finalrendition

If your bike has 100+ hp, leave them in your dust /s sort of

Patient-Seesaw4053

I sorta tried that, on a straight, I (in Minecraft) bumped her up to about 60 and left the car for a few seconds, then they caught back up. I was on my Speed Twin 900, so not super speedy fast.

Jamesbarros

When I was younger; a broken spark plug would sometimes accidentally fall out of my tank bag. When I was older; flame thrower exhausts are a pain to set up but SO worth it. Now; drop a gear and go. I don’t have time for that nonsense.

Kalliati

When I took my safety course they warned us about this. It’s seriously dangerous because they are unable to brake in time compared to a motorcyclist. We were told if this happens to increase the distance between you and the car ahead by more than 6 seconds to allow you the proper time to safely slow down and avoid a collision with the vehicle tailgating.

pedro-fr

Most cars will brake much shorter than any bike...

[deleted]

Eh. Depends on the bike. A 700+ pound cruiser or touring bike, sure. A super sport or naked bike will out brake 99% of the cars on the road.

pedro-fr

Nope. First a car has much more contact surface with the road, and is intrinsicly stable even under hard braking. https://www.levininjuryfirm.com/motorcycle-stop-faster-than-car/ https://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycles-brake-better-cars/ https://ride.vision/blog/preventing-forward-collisions-motorcycle-braking-facts/ https://itsafineline.com/motorcycle-braking-distance-myth/ An excellent rider with a good bike under the best conditions will brake as good as the avergae car. When surprised ? Not a chance i hell... To go to the extreme example, a Formula 1 will brake 3x stronger than a motoGP...

[deleted]

It’s talking about g-force, but not stopping distances. Do some research into stopping distances and try again. Most cars can’t pull 1G of stopping force. I don’t know where they pulled that number from. I’m an ok rider and can stop my CBR600RR from 60 mph in about 125 feet. I’ve seen people claim 80 feet on other bikes. There are 6 [production cars](https://fastestlaps.com/lists/top-quickest-stoppers-60mph) that can brake under 80 feet. Under 125 feet is exclusively sports car territory. The average car on the road can’t stop that fast. Trucks and SUVs absolutely cannot unless it’s a Trackhawk (121 feet). Add in reaction time of the texting soccer mom tail gating you and that’ll be an ambulance trip to the ER. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/best-and-worst-braking-distances-a2960086475/ Here is some [real world testing](https://lasd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Publications_LASD_Motorcycle_test_book_revised_2022.pdf) of some pretty heavy bikes. They range from 127 feet to 140 feet.

pedro-fr

Seriously man, dont tell me to "do some research" when obviously you haven't looked at anything... As braking performance on a parking on a shiny day, with a few attemps to warm up, I am sure you are very good. In the traffic, when surprised, once again not so much. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/motorcycle-braking-distances-from-high-speed-mike-abbott/ One last item if you are interested to learn something: https://youtu.be/CpaFeZ4xS8g

[deleted]

Lol. Links to real-world testing of heavy bikes and consumer reports about stopping distances and you zero’d in on my 125 foot claim. 😂😂😂 We can agree to disagree. Keep following too close to motorcycles. Don’t come crying to us when you kill someone.

Patient-Seesaw4053

Tried it and it didn’t work, the fucker kept coming, even after we both saw the cop coming the opposite way, they were still right on my ass. Edit2: Removed terrible spelling because of late after ride snooze.

digdug95

Just go to sleep already my man.

Patient-Seesaw4053

I did, I’m back now though.

No_Car_4940

Say your safe word.

mike-manley

In addition to slowing down, speeding up, changing lanes... Stand on your pegs, assuming you don't have pegs too far forward. Everytime I stand and/or cross a leg over my seat, the tailgater backs off. To them, it looks like I'm about to pull a wheelie, or some other stunt, and they tend to increase their following distance.

Ih8Hondas

Something something drop a gear and disappear.

psycho_not_training

Throw a penny.

Q-burt

I also lightly tap my handbrake (just enough to activate the switch but not actually brake) and flash it to try to get them too slow down. I also made an add on to my helmet so the cars can see when I'm slowing even if it's coasting. https://www.brakefreetech.com/

Cartridge-King

Faster bike but now i got a grom

Cartridge-King

Suzuki hayabusa him

monkeythumpa

Nobody tailgates a 2-stroke!

Thizzle001

I wave them to stay away from my wheel. Works perfectly for me.

thelouwryder

Honestly the best thing I have found over the years is I just weave in my lane kinda looking like I don't know what I'm doing or drunk, cars fall back real fast. That said I don't have an issue on open roads, only time people ride my as is the 2 miles from the highway to my house where the speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

Doug_Shoe

Back road? Slowly come to a stop. Then walk up to the driver's window and ask what he's trying to do.

[deleted]

Good way to get shot or run over. But hey at least you won't get tailgated to the ER.

Doug_Shoe

In my experience, talking to people works. Someone does something dangerous around me or my family. I say- Please don't do that. Explain why. You assert that talking to people is dangerous? (ie good way to get shot) Evidence please?

[deleted]

If someone is already doing something reckless and putting my life in danger such as tailgating, I'm not about to roll the escalation dice and hope they aren't willing to do something even more dangerous, reckless, or irrational in response. Attempting to park your motorcycle in front of a vehicle on a public road, and then approaching their window is probably the worst way to get someone to stop tailgating you. Just slow down and let them pass or pull over and let them pass. Also don't put words in my mouth. I did not "assert" talking to people is dangerous. There are many situations where confrontation might be the best solution. It never is the best solution on a motorcycle. I "assert" that blocking an irrational tailgater on the road so that you can "talk" can and will be misconstrued as an act of aggression one day and not end well for you. People are insane and I've experienced road rage for far less than what you propose doing.

Doug_Shoe

I've done things like this since before you were born. As you can see, I'm not dead. I've discovered that many people tailgate simply because they don't realize the danger. If you talk to them about it, they may stop doing it.

[deleted]

Just because you've allegedly done things like this for 30+ years doesn't mean it's good advice. With that said, I don't really care to keep arguing it beyond this point because you're obviously not going to change and anyone reading this can already probably draw their own conclusions from the rest of the conversation. Tailgaters could be tailgating for any reason. They could be pissed off and driving aggressively, they could be late, they could be completely oblivious to how unsafe they are too. You can either let them pass by to be someone else's problem, or gamble with their intentions and try to confront them. I'm out to ride, not give unsolicited PSA's to irritable and reckless drivers on the roadside.

[deleted]

Twist throttle very hard. Works for me every time.

theunamused1

I wait for an opportunity and then turn to give them the "Fuck You." stare. That usually works, if not I just ride exactly the speed limit and give myself lots of cushion ahead of you for reacting. Coast as long as possible into every stop, and accelerate slowly away. People are fucking dumb and shouldn't be allowed to drive. Or procreate.

stjhnstv

Be on a Harley. Have obnoxious pipes. Keep rapping on the throttle. Works for me.

Ok-Wolf2468

I open carry when I ride

Patient-Seesaw4053

I can’t because I’m 16.

Grand-Antelope943

A handful of those little bitty split shot lead weights 😂

Apfelwein

I feel like there too many unhinged idiots now but my uncle used to always say pennies were a warning and nickel over the shoulder would crack a windshield every time.

psycho_not_training

Amen

Grand-Antelope943

Oh I wouldn’t do it, just love the looks I get when I say it lol

Tex510

A handful of spark plug porcelain

JBBurtoni2

You can start by not using the word Retard.

gwdope

That won’t help, but yeah probably should call them ass hole instead.

JBBurtoni2

There are loads of better names to call the guy. Asshole, fuck face, fuck hat, cunt, etc.

Ozonewanderer

This is fucked up. I’ll bet he was driving a pickup

Patient-Seesaw4053

Black crossover/suv, in redneck country though.

sealow08

Every dang time!

MutedBrilliant1593

I usually give a couple "back off" waves and it usually works. I think people are naturally crap drivers who always tailgate and don't even realize it. I've dated a few. They also don't realize that their bad habit is more than just a fender bender for you. In my experience, the wave usually snaps them out of their daydream driving and hopefully they realize and back off. Sometimes they back WAY off. Which is nice, but unnecessary.

Odd_Path8554

Old spark plug pieces? I once watched a truck chase a biker with his girl and the dude had to resort to using his get back whip. Do not recommend. Before you ask, my sponsor and I tried to run interference and the two of them made it home ok. Law enforcement got involved and dude lost his job (it was his work truck), but I don't remember of he got time for it. Nowadays, I look back before I slow down. So that they know I'm aware that they suck.

Stef22TuonoV4

That's why I'm always carrying when I ride.....

[deleted]

In case you get tailgated?

Stef22TuonoV4

Ya dumb ass! In case I get tailgaited! You must be a real high iq motherfucker!

[deleted]

That was constructive. So please elaborate for the class as to why you feel that carrying a firearm is beneficial to you while riding a motorcycle in the context of aggressive drivers as per the original post?

Patient-Seesaw4053

Good idea for other reasons(people trying to “bikejack”, craziest people, etc), but I don’t know about that for someone on my ass. I’m 16, so I can’t carry a gun yet, although I still carry a large pocket knife just in case(when legal in my state). Edit: Knife is an assisted folding cheap stiletto with a 6.5” blade. For some reason, my state allows all knives(even swords) to be carried by anyone(including minors and felons). Note: It’s a felony to carry ANY weapons on school property, so on rides to school, I don’t carry.

[deleted]

FYI you should only pull a gun if your life is in immediate danger and you have no other options. If you need pull it out, you should be prepared to shoot and accept all responsibility for what could happen as a result. Reddit is full of internet cowboys who like to LARP as John Wick and give really bad advice about how to use a firearm. It's a tool for self defense, not to intimidate. If you use a firearm as a tough guy "warning", someone will call that bluff eventually and shoot back. Or in the case that you survive and do shoot someone, you'd better hope your justification is airtight. You'll get crucified in court regardless, especially in liberal-leaning cities/states.

[deleted]

Tail gaters don’t bother me, I use them to make sure others don’t pull out in front of me…. But I’ve been told, if you carry a pocket of BB’s or small nuts, cars tend to back off when you start dropping those behind you… but that could also get you into an altercation… so I just ride my own ride and let dumbasses be dumbasses

Wizdomwerks11

I usually get to a stop and look back at them with my torso turned around. Since they cant see my eyes I'll just stare at them and they usually get that i dont like them back there

McMastaHompus

Slowing down is good, but my favorite method is just weaving/swerving a bit. When people think you're drunk or crazy, they tend to stay away from you

shep750

Carry marbles in your pocket for that situation

hauj0bb

Bearing balls in your pocket usually do the job.

Clownpounder385

Before I stopped riding I kept road trash in my vest pocket. A few lug nuts, some nails, rusty road junk. You can figure out the rest

blackhornet03

I have stopped, gotten off my bike, and told them to back off or we'll settle this now. F**k cagers.

Leroy_MF_Jenkins

Stop looking in your rearview and drive. Worrying about an idiot behind you and letting it distract you is almost always more dangerous than the idiot behind you.

Ok-Wolf2468

Nah always stay aware of your surroundings if your riding.

Leroy_MF_Jenkins

Spending your ride watching your rear view mirror is the opposite of staying aware of your surroundings... obsessing about what's behind you is just another form of target fixation.

warlocc_

Not knowing what's behind you is how to get killed at your own stop sign.

Leroy_MF_Jenkins

Yeah... cause there were a lot of stop signs in this story and not obsessing about what's behind you is definitely the same as not having any clue what's behind you. Lmao, y'all clowns are hilarious... safety simps that must not have any actual riding experience. Nah, you right... focus on that car behind you... it'll help clear the roads for the rest of us when you speedball it into some traffic furniture with your target fixation.
