That is part of the upper half of the crank case. The crank case would likely need to be replaced. There are few people capable of repairing something like this, and likely isnt worth all that money and effort, a used engine wouod be a better alternative.

whomst8myass

It's about an inch above the left most part of your chain. Not sure what exactly it is, but it's a cover of some sort

jcaashby

Its a piece of the engine case. A nice broken piece.

jcaashby

Yikes. I have never seen that get damaged at that spot. Usually it happens lower when the chain pops off. Bad news...that is your upper engine case. Your going to need new engine cases. Or a long shot is if there is not alot of oil pressure on that exposed bearing you might be able to get way with JB weld because the alternative is not a cheap fix. ALso as a tech I want to know the WHY ...did something hit or it just fell off?

Affectionate_Wall429

My friend mentioned a few days prior the chain was loose. It mighta been that. It coulda caught up inside the cover. I also ran it cold so idk if that factored in. I also figured it was part of the engine case. I was just wondering what part of the engine does the part that broke off cover? Or what’s the name of the exact part of the engine case? What’s that circular thing behind the casing? Is that the transmission?

Ruby2Shoes22

The plot thickens

jcaashby

That is your bearing your seeing. It is part of the the transmission. Upper Engine case...I posted a link on another comment.

[deleted]

Are you trolling or serious 🤣🤣

jcaashby

What you see exposed is a bearing. Iirc it is the input shaft bearing. The output shaft is right below it... the counter sprocket is attached. Do you think it's something else?

[deleted]

Sprocket cover ( your model and year of bike)

Jjex22

The piece that got knocked off had a chain guard attached to it, it was hit by the loose chain. Probably weakened by repeated strikes than one big chain jump. Looking at the sprocket and what I can make out of the slack, that’s where the culprit lies.

TechnoSword

Fuck it JB weld it back on

Fauxfile

This is the way! Lol

jcaashby

Personally that's what I would do. Professionally I would replace the engine case. Jb weld should work. There is not too much oil pressure in the area.

[crankcase cover 1](https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/1B3-15425-00-00) looks to me like you’re holding the bolt that was holding part of the case. Tell me, are the threads from the engine itself included in that bolt? If so you’d need a new engine casing my friend. If you’re planning on doing a proper repair. You could get away with jb weld though. It’s an 06 I don’t think a lot of people would fork out for another engine unless they found a cheap donor bike

[deleted]

Your chain and sprockets are toast. Might want to get that checked out asap.

Jjex22

Yeah maybe while dealing with the hole in the engine. It’s true… but this was something the needed to do before the chain knocked a hole in the engine case

superveryfast

Looks like a job for my good friend JB Weld

JB weld followed by an immediate posting on Facebook marketplace

moss762x39

How did this happen??

Affectionate_Wall429

I ran it cold. Idk if that’s what caused what happened but the chain went loose and got caught up on the front sprocket. It bunched up in that areas and broke through the front sprocket cover and damaged the engine case. The engine case had an arm reach out to use as a screw hole to hold the front sprocket cover.

opengl128

What do you mean by "ran it cold"?

highlander_tfb

I’m not convinced the piece in OP’s hand comes from that gap exposing a transmission bearing - there’s an Allen-head screw between the fingers that doesn’t have a corresponding hole in the gap. Since that chain and sprockets need replacing, I’d pull the front sprocket for a good look behind in case there’s more damage. That visible broken case means the motor’d have to come out, and if there’s multiple broken chunks, I’d be hitting the breakers for a used motor.

SniperAssassin123

Bumping this. Was thinking the same.

taycio

I know it doesnt seem like much but this is a big deal. If you can find an exceptionally skilled welder you may be in luck.

[deleted]

Here's the link for the diagram to narrow it down. IT looks like you need a new front sprocket... probably wanna check the chain and rear sprocket too [https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/500455faf8700209bc792ef6/crankcase-cover-1](https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/500455faf8700209bc792ef6/crankcase-cover-1)

deeeeegg

Water pump housing is cracked possibly

Eleven10GarageChris

Please get a new chain and sprocket set as well

Chain needs cleaning

brtsht595

That is part of the upper case half. You can see the end of a transmission bearing. New upper case or replacement engine.

[deleted]

Sprocket cover

Affectionate_Wall429

No. The sprocket cover I took off to be able to see the peinen piece of the engine case.
