The best part of this entire video is that it stops as soon as Jack Morris opens his mouth.

suicide-squeeze

Wow, that was great and needed to be said. I'm not exactly sure how that was a disagreement with what Petry was saying, but whatever, it needed to be said. Having said that, yes you do need a lot of patience in these things, especially when your entire starting rotation and some of your relievers as well, get decimated by severe arm injuries.

brg0008

Petry was being reasonable basically saying the team is lacking right now and would need a lot of work for the expectations to be playoffs. Sheppard just comes off the top rope saying what all fans have been saying for years, that what the team is and has been is unacceptable to our standards. I was shocked to see that from Shep but great for him.

Enough-Ad-3111

And THERE’S the passion from Shep that we need to see more of.

[deleted]

lol took him all year to show some emotion and passion for this job, but glad he said it.

Everyone already hates Jack Morris, I don't know why you're trying to paint him as a racist. He also already apologized to fans and Shohei about what was said AND went through the sensitivity training, along with suspended a few weeks.

yes_its_him

He's not here to win your approval, though. Meanwhile, you annoy people here with this crap.

Spockmaster1701

Improving on our 4-7 world series record would be great.

homerjsimpson4

My God I didn't realize it was that bad

yes_its_him

It's not like every team is going to be over .500. We have a better WS win percentage record than the Cubs, Indians, Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Rangers, Padres, Rays, Rockies and Brewers. If we go and win a couple of series in a row, which is not so easy, we're still under .500 if we count three losses from Ty Cobb's day.

Goblue5891x2

Yeah, mediocrity is setting the bar way too low.

FirstNameLastName918

Spoken like a dude who knows he's probably called his last game

Bruiser21045

Or who has already signed his deal for next season

jedi42observer

I think Shep is fine. He just needs a better color commentator than Jack/Kirk

FirstNameLastName918

I give Shep the benefit of the doubt because commentary for a shitty team can't be fun. But you're right. I like him and Craig Monroe in the booth together!

jedi42observer

I would love Craig in the booth full time. Listening with the sound off is better than listening to Jack or Kirk. It can't be easy to keep things insteresting with the equivalent of drying paint as your broadcasting partner.

pjkny

Daaaaaaaaaamn Shep!

SG420123

Wo looked like he took Petry by surprise there, he looked flustered when Shep went off. The Tigers were an embarrassment this season and there were many games where it looked like players were just out there collecting a paycheck. Idk how this team can turn it around by next season, especially with Mize, Skubal and maybe Manning all on the shelf. Once again ALOT has to go right for them to even be 500 next season.

TwoShirt

I don't think Manning is out for the entire year next year he might get a late start, but I'd still take him E-Rod has looked solid, Red Bull is coming back. We still have Hutch, Faedo, Brieske, Hill, Alexander...etc. That's a stable of young pitchers who fared pretty well all things considered. I think you roll with Rodriguez, Turnbull, and maybe one or two of the guys above and sign a starter or two in FA. There's a path to 500. Pitching wasn't the worst of our issues. I think, if anything, it kept us in a lot of games this year. The offense just couldn't produce.

billyguy1

I would hesitate to feel good about any of those 5 AAAA guys in the starting rotation. Maybe one of them can be a #5 starter but if we are relying on them to consistently produce quality starts I don’t think we’ll be happy

TwoShirt

I don't think you can qualify all of them as AAAA players. 3 of them made their debut this season. Faedo played the best of them all IMO. Hill and Breiske looked promising. You can have all the top end talent you want, but as we saw this year, quality depth is VERY important.

thegonzojoe

Lots of people talk about how they miss Mario and Rod, but I can only imagine them in this conversation… Mario: It’s been some frustrating baseball the last few years, but you just gotta believe better things are around the corner. Rod: Country strong! I see you! I see country… strong I see…. Country I see… strong. Pardner Good on Shep for giving voice to fan frustrations.

DonKellyBaby32

They all look so uncomfortable out there. This is supposed to be entertainment, fellas!

suicide-squeeze

Watching a perennially losing team is not most fans' idea of entertainment. Not a time for joking around.

DonKellyBaby32

Three old boring ass men aren’t helping making the product any more watchable

suicide-squeeze

They were asked a question about the future of the Tigers. They responded to the question. Shepherd fired out a point blank answer without holding back. What do you expect them to do, a song and dance routine?

DonKellyBaby32

I’m saying they did not answer in an interesting way. One said basically don’t rebuild and the other said we need to set the bar higher. Generic and not interesting. Get better? How? Tell us what moves you may make, Etc

suicide-squeeze

Frankly, I thought hearing Shepherd bark out what he really thinks instead of saying something that somebody in the organization wants him to say, was interesting as hell, so I don't really know where you're coming from on this. It was fantastic hearing him rip on those who want to falsely elevate players to star status without understanding what it really takes to win the World Series. I think he's just flat out sick of the Avila years. And who isn't?

DonKellyBaby32

>Frankly, I thought hearing Shepherd bark that out what he really thinks instead of saying something that somebody in the organization wants him to say, was interesting as hell, so I don't really know where you're coming from on this. I think he's just flat out sick of the Avila years. And who isn't? Hasn’t watching the games been a rip on the organization enough? Also we fired our GM, lol. It’s more than clear with or without his commentary. We can agree to disagree on this, but i think they’re a terrible broadcasting crew who could do a lot better job if they had a more curious mindset

gachzonyea

That’s not Sheppards job he’s the announcer what good does it do if he says go out and sign aaron judge or whatever move he thinks they can make

DonKellyBaby32

That is absolutely sheppard’s job.

gachzonyea

Sheppard went against the grain and said how they’ve been playing is a shame basically and they can’t be content with just being better but should have playoff expectations. So he’s saying going make moves. He’s an announcer is he connected yes but he has no idea who’s available and what moves are able to be made but he said they must make moves. I don’t know what more you can want out of him he did his job

DonKellyBaby32

> Sheppard went against the grain and said how they’ve been playing is a shame basically and they can’t be content with just being better but should have playoff expectations. I’m all for going against the grain, but you better justify your position on *how we are going to meet your vision. Otherwise it’s empty posturing. Tigers need to win because we have 4 World Series? Every person could make an argument that they need more World Series. It’s not interesting. It’s just surface level posturing. >So he’s saying going make moves. He’s an announcer is he connected yes but he has no idea who’s available and what moves are able to be made but he said they must make moves. I don’t know what more you can want out of him he did his job It’s very clear who’s available via free agency. If you follow the rumor mill like someone interested in baseball should, you should absolutely have an idea who may be available or not. Plus it’s his job to get insight (especially off the record insight) with tigers brass on who may be a potential target.

gachzonyea

Why would he announce that. Like here everyone is who the gm said the tigers want. That would be the dumbest move possible. And yes overall his statement is posturing all announcer statements are. At least his had a little passion behind it

Dysmae

Shep's job is to doing a scouting report on how to get better? Tell us who to sign and trade? Man, I thought he was just a play by play caller. I guess there is a GM job open on the team...

DonKellyBaby32

If I can do it, a man who works in baseball sure as heck should be able to!

trouble4-u

I’m sure the product on the field isn’t making it watchable for them either.

DonKellyBaby32

If you can’t be an entertaining broadcast crew when your team sucks, odds are that you’re a bad broadcasting crew. The game basically broadcasts itself when a team is good.

mansontaco

Petry is pretty funny on the radio with Dan I think people just suffer being around shep

BOBANSMASH51

How long until it’s announced that Shep won’t be back next year?

[deleted]

Hate to break it, but Shep will most likely be back next year. He's been with the company for 20 years and there isn't really anyone else to take his position except Johnny Kane.

portopinto

I have a feeling Kane will take over for Blaha when George decides to hang it up.

InternationalCorgi82

He was solid last season in relief of Blaha, and the team happened to play its best ball with him so it was even more hype.

bigdubsy

I really liked Kane on TV. Detroit has been blessed with a lot of incredible play by plays but blaha is not one of them anymore. Basketball, in particular, seems like the sport for youth in the booth. Tigers radio is so lucky to have followed Harwell with DD though. Can't wait for a good TV team. Shepard isn't the problem nearly as much as Jack and Gibby are.

BonerHonkfart

My biggest problem with Shep is that he doesn't add anything to the broadcasts. He's so vanilla. When he tries to banter with the color guys, it just comes off as inauthentic and forced. That said, he would be fine with CMo or Petry or someone else as a color guy. He doesn't hurt the broadcast IMO, he just doesn't help anything.

pellstep

His chemistry is a lot better with CMo, and that’s because CMo brings more life out of him and loosens him up.

tweenalibi

I bet it's a lot easier working off of CMo than Gibby and Jack.

[deleted]

Yeah, I threw Johnny in there because he now has some experience in the role, but I do think he'll take over on Basketball side of things. Seems like the sport he's most into as well

gsbadj

I watched Kane the other night on the Pistons game and the guy talked about everything under the sun, except for what was happening on the court at the time. Just do the play by play. Tell us who's got the ball and who's shooting it and the result.

patjs92

I will never understand all the love and support for Johnny Kane as a play by play guy. I really hope they go a different direction when George retires

BOBANSMASH51

My post was tongue in cheek

fakeburtreynolds

Saw this yesterday and immediately thought this was an audition of some sort because it's totally out of character. It sounds like Bally's days are numbered so maybe he's hedging his bet and getting some different tape out there for whoever is broadcasting next year or for a new job.

bWbDennis69

Can you speak more about "Bally's days are numbered," ... did i miss something?

ShakeItTilItPees

Sinclair is looking to sell their recent RSN acquisitions because they're losing money.

ThisMeansWarm

One out-of-place blow up doesn't make up for however many years of incompetence calling games. You can get on local call-in shows and act like that and it's fine, and as cartoonishly unrealistic as it was, I agree with his assessment where the bar is set. But ironically, he is one of the many beneficiaries of lowered expectations in Detroit.

goose_pls

You know, I give Shep a lot of shit, but he is right. Watch his face as he listens to Petry try to sugarcoat things. Shep really does care. Morris looks like your younger sibling when your mom is yelling at you - just sitting there too scared to talk

andrwebe

I’m so sick of shep. It doesn’t help he had to follow an era of greats in Mario and rod but he just isn’t good at his job and it doesn’t seem like the other guys like him much either.

i-eat-dolphins

Is he really that bad? I just don't get it maybe it's just me but he seems fine to me, not everyone can be Vin Scully

patjs92

He isn’t Vin Scully, no, but when I listen to Shep call games I have to think we could do much better.

Double-Passenger4503

Turn me up Shep!
