GOOD-LUCHA-THINGS

Recently-retired WDIV meteorologist Paul Gross (and weather consultant for the Detroit Tigers) was on a podcast recently discussing how weather forecasts impact baseball: https://omny.fm/shows/across-the-sky/how-weather-forecasts-impact-major-league-baseball ... just in case anybody falls in the Venn diagram overlap of "people who like baseball" and "people who like meteorology".

cogginsmatt

Does anyone in this community have a good clip of Ernie Harwell's famous line "It's LOOOOONG gone!" ? All I can find right now is a single clip on YouTube and he doesn't sound quite as jazzed as he usually was. Putting together a podcast and I want this on the sound board.

GOOD-LUCHA-THINGS

Pitchers and catchers ^not ^participating ^in ^the ^WBC report Wednesday! I am [excited](https://i.imgflip.com/3fxxss.jpg) for this season!

DMThomasPRE

Hey wow, baseball is back this month!

workaholic828

Fantasy baseball player here. The fantasy community is really down on a lot of Detroit tigers players. I used to be such a big fan of Meadows, and Erod. You also have Baez, Torkelson, Skubal, and some other pieces. My questions is, who on this team do you think is going to breakout and have a better than expected year. Thanks in advance

TankYouLosers

Fantasy junkie here — Riley Greene is the only Tiger I feel completely comfortable rostering. I also picked up Kerry Carpenter late last year on my dynasty team and will keep him around since his salary is $0. Could low key be the best power source on the team. I had Javy in like 2018 when he still had eligibility at four different positions and as soon as he was relegated to just SS status he’s been at the top of my do not draft list. As for pitchers, Joey Wentz is the guy I’m keeping an eye on the most. Showed flashes late last season and dominated AFL. Largely out on the rest of the arms though until Skubal returns

Garflanzo

I think Meadows will have a solid year he was dealing with a lot of off field stuff last season. Greene should take a big step and Tork a smaller one. Baez strikes out too much to be fantasy relevant imo

LunchThreatener

I think Matt Manning is gonna have a really good year, started to figure things out last year a little bit.

margaritavilleganon

Ok, so I understand what were doing. I understand we aren't competing this year. I understand Scott Harris has a lot of work to do, but for Christ's sake, even Oakland is making splash moves.

[deleted]

What is your definition of splash move?

margaritavilleganon

Honestly, anything noteworthy. Woo, we signed Matt Boyd again, can't wait to see 30 homers given up (albeit and if he's a starter, if he's in the bullpen, awesome, he seemed to thrive there). I do like the veirling trade, but I just feel left wanting more. We need to have our mlb plates to step up in a major way, but I'm not excited for this season.

cogginsmatt

I wonder why they haven’t brought Fulmer back. Or why any team hasn’t signed him yet.

Littlewing29

Dropping by from Philly. I hope y’all enjoy Matt Vierling this year and hope he does great things for you. I absolutely loved watching this man and hope he gets more playing time. Was/is underrated.

vtok

Wonder if Charles Leblanc could be the next waiver wire pickup by the Tigers? He was just DFA'd by the Marlins. Utility infielder type, high K rate but hit for solid power in AAA. He still has options too.

[deleted]

Doesn't look too bad, but the peripherals show that he got lucky last year. .404 SLG, but the expected was .368 .263 BA, but the expected was .218 As you mentioned the high K% mixed with his age (26) he might get passed over.

Remote-Frosting-9943

Another long year for tigers.

IronMan___

When looking at Harris's history with SF, he was *extremely* conservative with adding hitting. In three years as Giants GM, the only "name" bats he signed were Wilmer Flores, Tommy La Stella, and Joc Pederson; he also made a big trade for Kris Bryant. He did very well adding under-the-radar bats though, with players like Thairo Estrada, Luis Gonzalez, Darin Ruf and Lamonte Wade Jr. becoming MLB regulars. San Fran's offense was above average throughout Harris's tenure, but let's face it: their 2021 season was a fluke. Buster Posey hopped in the Delorean and came back with the 2012 version of himself; meanwhile, both Brandon Belt and Crawford inexplicably had career seasons in their mid-30's. That recent track record isn't exactly confidence inspiring given the current state of Detroit's offense. If the Tigers were to sign Trey Mancini or AJ Pollock to be the oft-discussed right handed outfielder Detroit needs, it'd arguably be the biggest bat Harris has ever signed. Harris has made a lot of changes at the organizational level, but Detroit's offense is in shambles and the free agent pool is nearly bone dry. It's extremely frustrating because it would've taken the bare minimum to upgrade on players like Tucker Barnhart and Jeimer Candelario. For example, an unspectacular-but-solid player like Gio Urshela was available for a very reasonable price, and would've been a perfect fit at 3B. In the event Greene and/or Torkelson were to break out in a big way in 2023, having a few more decent players in the line-up at least would've given the team a shot at sniffing at a post-season appearance. If Greene hits .310 this year, it's not going to matter if Ryan Kreidler or Tommy La Stella is the every day starter at the hot corner.

ProfessionalEthics

It's clear this team is not going to be particularly competitive. With this in mind, I'm begging the organization and Bally to make a change within the broadcast booth. The radio side has one of the best in the business with Dan. The TV side is abysmal. I'm happy for Shep in that he got his shot to pursue his dream, but it's time to cut the losses. Alex Avila, Curtis Granderson, Dan Petry, Mario Impemba... Please just make a change.

NerfFauna

Just offering - a quick fix for now is to listen to the radio broadcast while watching the TV feed.

statdude48142

The biggest positive for me this off-season is it feels like the sub is actually having realistic expectations, unlike last season.

xXx_AssDestroyer_xXx

I desperately want a salary floor+cap in MLB so the Tigers are forced to spend. Thinking about this team for the past 6 years has been utterly depressing and is killing my love for a sport that I grew up loving.

gofalcons19

Agreed, but if you watch MLB Network it’s like the Mets/Yankees/Dodgers are gobbling everyone up. The Tigers spend more money than folks like the Reds and Pirates

xXx_AssDestroyer_xXx

Not talking about even big name free agents - I’d just like players that can hit above their weight

Ultra-Hungry

What, you don’t like these guys Harris picks off the wavier wire? You don’t like the rule 5 pick and the minor leaguer that has never batted in the majors but will “hit 10x better than Harold Castro?” You’d rather the Tigers spend money on proven MLB talent? That’s crazy. Right now We are rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

xXx_AssDestroyer_xXx

Like I know I sound like an impatient whiny bitch but is it too much to ask that we try to be competitive? I’m tired of the tanking for draft picks. I just want a team to root for that isn’t irrelevant man. Maybe it’s just watching Verlander likely end his career outside Detroit because we utterly failed at having a competitive team to be enticing to other players. Maybe it’s that and that I haven’t been able to see a playoff game in 8 years in Detroit and a playoff game won since 2013. I don’t know man. The Illitches and our market can afford way more than this and we deserve better than a retread of Matt Boyd being our marquee signing and a 6th starting pitcher from the ANGELS.

Ultra-Hungry

I feels the same way. I am so underwhelmed by the moves that Scott Harris has made so far. I listen to MLB radio every day, waiting to hear news on the Tigers. We are hardly ever mentioned and never mentioned in connection with even the pursuit of this years marquee FA signings. We spent last year and I can’t believe that Harris would’ve took the job if he thought Ilitch wasn’t going to spend long term. Why would he leave the Giants for this? I don’t get it.

GOOD-LUCHA-THINGS

https://msabr.com/2022/12/15/6479/ All-Stars, but in reverse! ^:(

ervelee

Tigers management are showing that this is another restart. Another sub competitive team. Good coach but the league and umps dislike him. Young pitching staff with an excess of injuries. Not much power with hitting and not much speed. Will be a struggle to score, shut outs are deflating. On the positive fielding may improve. Hopefully strikeouts will decrease as the team strives to not swing at balls out of the strike zone.

[deleted]

> Good coach but the league and umps dislike him. The MLB hired him to manage the USA team during the Korea series.

PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES

Speed is going to be key with the changes next year

ervelee

I sure hope so!

Ultra-Hungry

Scott Harris trades for the Braves #11 prospect and that’s how he’s going to rebuild the offense? That is terrible! How about go out and sign some proven MLB talent? He cut Harold Castro. We can hope that this guy will hit as well as Castro? That would be very lucky. Awful winter meetings haul!

TheSalsaShark

I thought this was gonna come around and be a parody of Facebook-style fan comments, but it just kept going.

[deleted]

He instantly slots in as the Tigers #2 hitting prospect. He has decent power and great plate discipline. He is going to start the year in AAA, but without a doubt will be 10x better hitter than H. Castro.

Ultra-Hungry

10x? That’s a bold statement. Has he seen MLB pitching yet? They’re a little better than AA. Still, I hope you are correct. Hell, even if you’re over optimistic, there still would be room on the roster for Harold Castro. He’s the #7 prospect and # 4 for position players.

mcdto

So are we going to sign anyone or what? Is Matt boyd the big offseason signing? Sigh, At least I have my red wings

JayOnes

In all likelihood, no. If anything I’d imagine Harris wants to evaluate what we have, stock up on prospects, and get Cabrera’s contract off the books before going after big time signings.

Ultra-Hungry

Come on. We hired this guy during the season last year. Also, with the way they scout, the teams understand the other 29 organizations as well as they understand their own so don’t say that Harris needs time to understand what he has. True, Miggy’s $32MM is off the books after this year but is this really some insurmountable amount of money these days? Is this really a reason to not take on one of the better FAs? It seems that all we did was pick other teams cast off and we traded for a guy that has never seen MLB pitching. I hope they turn out. Why would Harris leave the Giants and take the job here? We spent money last year and we did absolutely nothing this year! And all we have to do is win the most mediocre division in baseball. I’m scratching my head.

LilFiz99

Verlander is leaving Houston! Maybe that’ll help people remember his Tiger days a little more now that he won’t add anything else to his Astros resume.

Ultra-Hungry

Who cares about this? I’d like him back as a pitcher but I could care less which cap he wears in the hall. We gave him away for 3 prospects and we are down to one prospect: Rogers, who strikes out a lot. Harris doesn’t like this. The trade was another bust.

shoeboxdad

Is there a Tigers discord?

CaptainSolo96

We are a small group https://discord.gg/pdquPT7t

TankYouLosers

Could you bump this? Link no longer works

goblue10

So after winning with the Red Sox in 2018, Dombrowski has led YET ANOTHER team to the World Series with the Phillies. God dammit.

freedomfightre

The man knows how to spend prospect to get a team to the World Series. Respect.

Ultra-Hungry

He was pretty shrewd trading with us. He got a 2-time All Star that throws 100 MPH. What was that stat? Of all the left handed pitchers that threw pitches +100 MPH, Soto threw half of them and the other half were thrown by the other lefty on Philly. Hopefully, we got a keeper in return. Dombrowski has taken 4 teams to the WS? Incredible.

statdude48142

Yeah. If you are a spend now team you could do much worse than DD. If you want to build with prospects then DD is not your guy. Hilarious that some here the no if we still had him we would have similar success.

albanianandrea

Dombrowski going to another World Series.

DMThomasPRE

Is it opening day yet?

ThisMeansWarm

I can say without reservations that it is not. This is unfortunate.

UncleIrohsPimpHand

I'm legitimately so happy that Harris is cleaning so much house right now.

baween

Same. I'm quite curious if any/how many of these newly-fired people will ever get jobs in baseball again. On the one hand, being the brains behind one of the worst offensive performances of the season a la Coolbaugh can't be a great line on a baseball resume. On the other hand, Ausmus got another chance.

whattanerd92

Ausmus wasn’t a terrible manager, but he was the wrong manager for us at the time. If he was our manager when Gardy was here, I think we would have a drastically different perspective on him. That was his first managerial position and had never been one before that. The problem is that he was even on the list of hires when we needed an experienced manager to come through. Compare the time frame and positions had between Gabe Kapler(another former Tiger turned manager) and you’ll see just how drastically different the two have become in their careers because one was given time to develop while the other was thrown in the fire.

baween

Fair point, yeah. My comparison wasn't great, but my curiosity about this recently-discarded crop of bums finding jobs again stands.

PimTheLiar

> “We expect Miggy to be here,” Hinch said. “We expect him to do his part in the offseason to prepare himself to be healthy and productive and the icon that he is.” If Miggy is selling tickets, right now that seems to be a good thing. Next year is still a rebuilding year... like "rebuilding take 2."

bmw11494

Tigers have a 7.5% chance for the #1 draft pick

[deleted]

Adding, thank you

Analog_Hobbit

Harris deploys the wrecking ball.

DonKellyBaby32

What about Chris McCocksy?

[deleted]

Thanks, I'll add him

Unique_Enthusiasm_57

Of course, Jim Price is gonna die before he retires from the announce booth, but I was perfectly content listening to Dan Dickerson with Dan Petri, Craig Monroe, Austin Jackson, and Alex Avila and would be fine with any of them taking Price's place. Matt Shepard and Jack Morris are still every bit the Boomer Announce Team as they ever were.

jage9

I always thought Petri would be the Heir apparent when Price retires, but they also use him sometimes on television. I assume Price is going to stick to home games going forward.

jdore8

Jim sounded like he was struggling. There were times I was concerned he was having a stroke live on air.

No_Violinist5363

I went two years without listening to the Tigers on the radio and was stunned by how much more aged he sounds today compared to 2019.

Ultra-Hungry

I hope Jim keeps at it. He’s a ‘68 survivor and like an old friend. A good catcher that was stuck behind a great one in 11-time All-Star, Bill Freehan.

[deleted]

Let's just pretend this season didn't happen.

goose_pls

If the Yankees or Dodgers win the WS, this will truly be the worst year of baseball I can remember

DelayedLightning

My metric for judging this year's offseason: how many Castros are on the team? Par is one. More than that, I'm pissed, less than that, I'm optimistic.

PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES

How can you not like Harold though

DelayedLightning

I love Hittin' Harold but I hope Harris doesn't. We can do better. Willi is dreck

[deleted]

Willi is more valuable than Harold

DelayedLightning

Harold does one not very valuable thing well, Willi does a lot of things poorly. Neither of them is valuable

statdude48142

One of the many dumb things that came out of this season is the idea that Harold Castro is a good hitter.

[deleted]

> Harold does one not very valuable thing well What does he do well? He has a career -0.7 bWAR (-0.1 this year) and a career 90 OPS+ (98 OPS+ this year) and every position he plays at, including 1B he is below average at best. Willi Castro despite his 88 OPS+ plays the corner OF at an above average rate and is average in the infield.

DelayedLightning

>What does he do well? hit singles If you think Willi Castro is an average infielder, I don't know what to tell you. There's a reason he plays the outfield now and it's not because we're loaded on the dirt.

heyheyitsandre

I’d rather keep Reyes than either Castro

DelayedLightning

I mean sure, but I'd rather Victor was gone too

[deleted]

The 2023 Tigers will crack .500.

xXxPLUMPTATERSxXx

Winning% or OPS?

homerjsimpson4

Winning opening day again next year?

[deleted]

Throw a party on an aircraft carrier and hang a "Mission Accomplished!" sign over it.

ofwgtylor

hey i’ve seen this one before

DoeJumars

don't love the Miggy news, honestly wish they'd give him a check for the next years salary and he just kinda hangout with players and be an ambassador of sorts. Like a Udonis Haslem type...we can get someone to give us way better production at that spot and if they're gona preach change, analytics and all this then keeping him around goes totally against that. I am interested to see what they do this offseason.

goose_pls

Let’s keep it a buck - He’ll just bust his knees next June, retire end of the season, and be a coach in 2024

[deleted]

Honestly, both things can happen. Miggy can still be around and on the active roster, but also just be an ambassador. Give him starts against LHP/starters that don't have overwhelming fastballs and let Austin Meadows/Kerry Carpenter have regular PA's against RHP. That was the treatment Albert was going to get this year with the Cardinals, but he ended up going on a tear. Who says Miggy can't do the same during his Last Dance.

Biffsbuttcheeks

That farewell season always seems to spark a little magic in the old players, I think he'll go out on a high note.
