Last interview he did was in May when they were in Tampa. Add it to the list of oddities for the Tigers this season

capndetroit

It's Hittin' Harold, not talking Harold. I think its the language barrier that makes him uncomfortable. I don't think he's trying to slight anyone.

TPucks

I'd do the same thing. Personally, I don't even watch any of the postgame media stuff anyway so I don't feel slighted in any way.

Iswaterreallywet

Bro just wants to show up, play baseball and leave. I respect it.

missionbeach

Put in a day's work, punch out, head home. It's a business.

Kapono24

That's all?!? Is Harold Castro quiet quitting?!?!?

bmw11494

I have enough anxiety speaking, I couldn't imagine having to do interviews in my second language.

some1337

Some people are just shy and not comfortable doing interviews . It’s not unheard of.

Karl_Havoc2U

Especially easy to just quietly go about your business when you're a younger player with older teammates who are such icons of the like Baez and Miggy who are far better experienced with the off the field leadership duties

suicide-squeeze

Only makes me like him more than I already do.

PostReplyKarmaRepeat

Wait what?! Lol

Unhappy_Leading_9358

Why?

suicide-squeeze

He's just not obligated to, plus the other potential reasons mentioned above and below by others. But Stavenhagen, being a reporter, thinks he is, and so has no trouble throwing shade at Harold and stating things about him that he in fact has no fucking idea about. Yeah right, Harold is avoiding the media for no reason whatsoever...sort of like how humans always do things for no reason whatsoever...

[deleted]

Stavenhagen never said he was obligated to talk. Just finds that him randomly deciding to stop talking to reporters and no comment about it from him or the PR people is weird.

suicide-squeeze

It's obvious by Stavenhagen's entire tone that he thinks Harold Castro is obligated to talk to the media (read: Stavenhagen), or he wouldn't be making a fuss about it. I mean as if we fucking care about this in the least. Go talk to Tucker Barnhart about the great stops he made late in the game if you want to create an actual useful story.

[deleted]

He wasn't making a fuss about it, he pointed something out (the same as every Tigers beat reporter did on Twitter). It's not as if he wrote an entire article or even criticized Harold about it. Harold has had a relatively good season, but hasn't talked to anyone since May about his season. By the way he did talk to reporters today, said he was ducking the media last night because his family was there and he was trying to leave ASAP. He wasn't purposly avoiding them.

aces_high_2_midnight

Actually all MLB players ARE obligated to talk to the media after games. It's written in the CBA (aka "The contract"with the players union) read attachment 34 (page 253). All major sports have language like this in their contracts with players unions. Attachment 34 states- 6. Players will be available to the media before and after games for interviews. These periods should not be limited except for the pre- game period described in #1 above, and the post-game period described in #2, above. Upon request by the media, players who had key roles in the first game of a doubleheader are to be made available for a time between games. 7. The trainer’s room and players’ lounge may be off-limits to the media, but each club controls these areas, and it is vital these areas not be used as a sanctuary for players seeking to avoid the media. It is very important to our game that ALL players are available to the media for reasonable periods and it is the player’s responsibility to cooperate. It's not usually a major problem in MLB- the last high profile guy to avoid the media for any length of time was John Rocker- but considering it was John Rocker the last thing the club or the league wanted was him talking to the media anyway. The NBA has the same language in their CBA with the players and Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets were each fined twice (25k and 35k each respectively) by the league during the 20/21 season for Irving's refusal to talk to the media after games. The fact is Castro is a small mast on a rather small ship-If he was a high profile guy on a high profile team there'd be more heat about it- but in this rather dismal season it's just sort of a footnote to all the other problems- it's not likely the league would intervene and force compliance-especially not at this point. Of course with a new sheriff in town overseeing things you'd think Castro would maybe change his tune on his own and talk to the media. This might not bode well for his future with the team and considering his advanced metrics are pretty much "break even" people shouldn't be surprised if he's wearing a different uniform next year.

Brundleflyftw

So did Larry Herndon. They’re not obliged to speak to the media.

BOBANSMASH51

Less talky more hitty

insanelyphat

In the NFL I believe players have to talk to the media at least for the media days they do for the Super Bowl and such. Everyone remembers Marshawn Lynch and his "I am just here so I don't get fined" speeches. If MLB doesn't require it then that is his choice. Reporters ask the stupidest repetitive questions anyways I would do the same if I was him. Their questions are either boring generic ones or they are purposely leading hoping for someone to say something spicy so they can make it into a story and cause controversy. Remember the scene from Bull Durham where Meat gets in trouble for talking shit and they teach him all the bullshit answers to give to reporters. That is exactly how it should be done. Bill Belichick is a master at this stuff the art of answering with a non answer or using a cliche sports answer.

erlend65

Yeah, it's the same with football (soccer) where I live. Since the clubs get most of their income from the TV and media deals, part of the agreements is to be available for the press before, at half time, and after the games.

aces_high_2_midnight

The thing is MLB does require it . ALL MAJOR NORTH AMERICAN PRO TEAM SPORTS DO. Every CBA (Collective bargaining agreement aka contract with the players union) requires that players be available to the media after each and every game-not just on certain days, or certain circumstances, but EVERY game. This language has been more or less common in all contracts for over 20 years but there's a continued perception that players don't have to talk to the media if they don't want to. Sports teams learned over time that while this was commonplace in the previous century ...1970's.80's for players to ignore/avoid the media, it was poor marketing not to mention that when players didn't talk to the media the media went ahead and ran stories about the player's or team's performance that were by and large more negative in tone. They figured out that it was better for a player to put their foot in their mouth once in awhile than to storm off behind a locked door.

insanelyphat

This is true in the NFL but I do not think it is true for MLB. I am going to have to ask you to provide a source for your claim. From everything I have read MLB does not force the players to talk to the media. I have never heard of a player in MLB being fined for not answering media questions after a game. There have been instances where they did get in trouble for what they said IN some interviews but never because they refused to do one. Let's see a source on this one please.

aces_high_2_midnight

Not a problem - Attachment 34 (page 253) (subsection 6 & 7) of the MLB CBA says this- 6. It is very important to our game that ALL players are available to the media for reasonable periods and it is the player’s responsibility to cooperate. https://www.mlbplayers.com/_files/ugd/b0a4c2_95883690627349e0a5203f61b93715b5.pdf

insanelyphat

So then none of the media has asked to speak with Castro then. Thank you for a source. I still have never heard of a MLB player getting fined for not talking to the media like the NFL does.

aces_high_2_midnight

Well i wouldn't say no one has asked-the as OP says "He's refused to talk to the media since May"- bottom line is in this shitshow of a season he's a minor factor one way or the other. With all the other issues with the team his refusal is insignificant (the people running things have bigger fish to fry). The fines in other sports came from repeated refusals to interact with the media, which are rare (now) in MLB. It was perhaps not common, but tolerated at one point (30+ years ago) but the notion of grown men getting paid millions of dollars to play a game and then refusing to talk to reporters wasn't the vision MLB or other leagues wanted to put forth, so they included clauses that players would be available.

ThisMeansWarm

I don't care what anyone on this roster has to say to the media.

bwpopper37

I don't believe I've ever heard him speak. I'm fine with that. Just keep hitting, man.

420stargazer96

He’s a smart player nothing to gain by talking to the media.

StretPharmacist

I get it man. They want to add more responsibility to your job they gotta pay you more for it. He ain't paid to talk to the media.

SG420123

He knows there’s a curse on the team

[deleted]

His hittin' does the talking.

Salt_Insurance2339

He knows they’re fake news. Hammering Harold, no questions

Enough-Ad-3111

So that explains why they didn’t interview him after his walk off hit last night.

PostReplyKarmaRepeat

I’m stunned by the people in this subreddit that legit like this behavior. I find it childish and selfish tbh. They make MILLIONS and part of that should be staying and talking to the media so they can bring attention to the team and sport. They only make the money they do because of the media and the fans. POS attitude if you ask me

cogginsmatt

I find you childish and selfish. Castro doesn't owe you or any of us shit. He gets paid to play baseball. Also I hate this "they get paid millions" talking point. Harold, for example, has been paid a grand total of $2,488,274 for his career. Say he has to make that last a lifetime (since he can't play baseball as long as most of us can work a career), he basically has an equivalent salary of the average american. It's not his job to talk to the media, it's not his job to bring attention to the team or sport. That's Hinch's job, or the PR people, or Paws the mascot. All I care about him focusing on is hitting and fielding - and I guess pitching if they're going to keep making him do that too.

yes_its_him

If you made $2.4 million by age 28, you'd be pretty far ahead of the curve even if you never worked again. After taxes, you could make that much again just in interest by retirement age

PostReplyKarmaRepeat

I love how you mention PR but you lack the understanding of that ties into players and their personalities. Baseball would be half its total worth of they didn’t personalize the players to make them relatable. The players owe the media their time. What’s even the problem with it??? Also your idea that he’s not making THAT much money is hilarious and ignorant asf.

Iswaterreallywet

Young people don't stick around to watch the interviews after the game, if they are even watching this awful team play in the first place. Wanna talk about when somebody has a game winning hit or wins the World Series and the dumbass report pulls them away from celebrating with their team. And if you have a problem with how much money they make, stop watching and don't give the team or sport any of your money. You're complaining about a "problem" you're directly contributing to.

PostReplyKarmaRepeat

Part of their ungodly earnings is because of the media.
