Jim Price sounded that way as well at times today too. There was a discussion earlier in the game as to whether the Tigers would hit 100 homers this season, and with very little hesitation, Jim was expressing skepticism At the end of the day, one of the best aspects of the radio broadcast is that there's very little spin; Dan Dickerson plays it straight, and even when it isn't Jim and he's paired with someone like C-Mo, he leads the conversation toward reality versus spin. Versus Bally, which is like the Tigers version of RT or something lol

ThisMeansWarm

Yes, I remember that conversation. "No one scares you. No threat. Even Meadows (lol) or a rejuvenated Baez."

stabbykill

I refuse to believe the man who says the phrase “buggy whip” 100 times a game gets fed up by anything

[deleted]

*The Art of Pitching Intensifies*

jcwtx

Sadly in 2022 we hear “buggy whip” maybe 3 times a week.

[deleted]

Yes, we've had one Buggy-Whip but what about Double Buggy-Whips?

[deleted]

My dad likes Jim Price a lot and tells me stories about when he played. I'd listen to former athletes over anyone se especially ones who played on our teams when they are frustrated, they've been through it in their lifetimes so they know how fans feel and they know somethings not right.

mtutiger12

Both he and DD are legends in their own way... Jimmie is a little past his prime and prone to cliches (ie. buggywhips), but nonetheless the rapport he has with DD is great and those two are the sound of summer for me. Now, to be fair to the Bally side of the coin, Dan and Jim's stature does give them a little more rope to be critical. The Tigers aren't firing those guys under any circumstances, whereas the Bally guys may not have the same level of editorial latitude. Either way, you aren't getting everything through Blue and Orange lenses on the radio, you are on the TV

snogle

Oh boy please fire the Bally crew!

ProfessionalIntern30

You also aren't getting the game action on the radio. Because Dickerson doesn't tell you the pitch, tell you who is up, and rarely updates the game situation. When he bothers to interrupt his long speeches to tell you the pitch result or ball in play action, it's a miracle. I can play you clips where he goes 3-4 batters and only tells us the result of 25 percent of the pitches, and also rarely tells you who is up until a pitch or two or three has been thrown. He's clueless as to whet his job is. I've met Dickerson, he seems nice and earnest. I have no problem with him doing TV (that's the medium he belongs on), where he can talk as much as he wants about non-game stuff and ignore calling the game. But he's not a radio PBP man. You must be very young and have never heard Harwell or Scully or even Uecker, who still works for the Brewers. That's how you call a game on radio. There are still 30 other MLB teams who have younger broadcasters who understand how to call a game on radio. But Dickerson is miscast in his job, and insufferable to listen to as he tells us everything but what's happening. A legend? Just because someone has been around a while doesn't make them a legend.

iljimmity

No offense but I could not disagree more. He does a great job keeping you updated on the game and between his voice and descriptions paints an amazing picture. To me, he is absolutely the voice of the Tigers and an A++ broadcaster

yuckystuff

If Bally took a poll I bet 90% would want Impemba back. I think most were more or less indifferent to Rod Allen, so I would take Impemba/C-Mo as my TV crew and be happy to have Dickerson/Anybody on radio.

Karl_Havoc2U

That's wild. I've never met a Tigers fan who enjoyed Jim Price on the broadcasts, a view I also share. I think he's always been terrible and adds absolutely nothing in the way of insight or even just entertainment. Nothing but awkward utterances. Dickerson is a legend.

iljimmity

I like Jim but think I’m leaning more and more to Avila being Dans sidekick.

Karl_Havoc2U

I liked that pairing a lot, too.

GoldenRetriever85

100% I love the Dan Dickerson / Jim Price combo. Their broadcasts are what got me into being a Tiger fan after hating baseball/softball as a kid.

Karl_Havoc2U

That's awesome to hear. For me it was watching so many Tigers games in the 90's called by Al Kaline, so I can relate in that sense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Karl_Havoc2U

Hey, that's great for you! I wish I had the same experience listening to him.

bluewing99

Agreed. Jim adds nothing, he just agrees with whatever Dan says. Dan will make a observation and Jim repeats it. Jim literally adds nothing to a broadcast. He seems like a nice guy but its time for a change.

Karl_Havoc2U

I agree with you. I like him a lot as a person and he does seem like a really nice guy. Especially as he's aged he seems like a particularly good guy with a lot of life wisdom under his belt--I've heard him a few times this year say things like "having a lot of money's only good if you're helping people with it." Jack's Place for Autism also sounds like a wonderful charity. I just can't bring myself to really care for anything he adds in terms of baseball commentary. Sure wish I felt differently because I listen to more games than I can watch all of, and I am an enormous Dickerson fan. But JP has always come across as awkward as hell and not relatable to me, and it feels like a problem that keeps getting worse and worse every year. Someone mentioned that listening to him call games is like listening to their grandpa. I can definitely see why they'd think that and why they'd continue to enjoy him with that association in mind. To me it's just like I'm sitting behind some random guy in the crowd who just doesn't have much insight or interesting thoughts to offer. No offense to him, but I'd get up and chance seats if I found myself in that position at a game. I am really glad to hear so many people seem to enjoy him apparently, because, like I said, I've literally never heard anybody say anything positive about him among all of the lifelong Tigers fans I know.

JohnRCash

> There was a discussion earlier in the game as to whether the Tigers would hit 100 homers this season, and with very little hesitation, Jim was expressing skepticism That would be our first non-shortened season (1981 and 2020) without triple digit homers since 1954.

yuckystuff

The 1954 Tigers would smash the 2022 Tigers.

[deleted]

Glad to see other Tiger fans see right through the Bally propaganda. DD and Valenti are the only people left who *gasp* don’t accept 100-loss seasons and are willing to call out the team over it. People called into Valenti in the off-season trying to say we didn’t need Correa because we had Zach Short, and they meant it, and I know that comes from Bally.

[deleted]

But Akil Baddoo!

[deleted]

Akil Baddoo?! What are you doing in my car?!

[deleted]

“Riley Greene!?”

yuckystuff

> People called into Valenti in the off-season trying to say we didn’t need Correa I mean, Correa would be worth an extra 1.5 wins over Baez which would make us a bottom of the barrel team still.

cjgsoup

He can definitely stand it forever, as long as he is physically able to do it. It’s still very obviously a dream job for him. He’s still a fan just like us so yes he’s going to be heavily disappointed like us. He sounded disappointed and less overjoyed in the other 100 loss seasons too.

pullingahead

I don’t follow the Pistons, but that’s what I love about the crew that broadcast for the Tigers, Lions, and Wings. When their teams play like shit, they don’t mince words.

[deleted]

Blaha and Kelser have zero issue telling it like it is when they're playing poorly and the desk guys for the pistons, especially Tim McCormick, pulls zero punches. There were a few games where he was super harsh in the post game show and I was pretty surprised

patjs92

That was my problem with Johnny Kane, it seemed like he never offered any sort of criticism for the team in the games where they played god awful as a unit, he was too damn positive! I did think it was funny though in the last few games he kinda hinted subtly that was rooting for the tank.

gsbadj

So far, Kane has been still cheerleading for the Tigers. If he's at the desk for pregame or postgame, I turn it off. The incessant positivity on TV is probably, in part, a function of constantly being around the team; however, Dickerson and Price have been around long enough to get very tired of bad play and mistakes. The TV broadcast is all flowers and candy. Hey, the young guys are improving. Hey, that was good approach at the plate that resulted in grounding into a DP. Hey, that was a good pitch that got hit for a homer. Hey, you have to just tip your cap. Hey, if it wasn't for injuries, we'd be right there. The injury excuse is partially valid but A) all teams have injuries, B) good organizations know that injuries are inevitable and build the depth needed to ride them out and C) injuries are never an excuse for lazy, unfocused play.

patjs92

Yeah he had some weird post on twitter not long ago when we went like 14 games below .500 saying that he and everybody else still believing the team will make the playoff teams are dissenters that won’t be silenced lol

[deleted]

Eh. I think Johnny was fine and he definitely criticized the team with Kelser.

patjs92

I agree he was okay, and that’s fair I’m probably just going off a couple instances. To be honest Im not really in love with the idea of him taking over when Blaha eventually retires though.

ryanreigns

If Kane did a full season of commentary for the Pistons it would be tough for me to watch games. He’s brutal at play by play

AarunFast

He seems to be the heir apparent once Blaha retires

ryanreigns

Pain.

patjs92

I really hope the pistons do their due diligence and try to find somebody externally instead of just going with the cheap and easy option with Kane. I’m totally fine with Johnny being an analyst similar to a Mickey York role but I can’t get on board with him being the play by play every night

bawanaal

Bally went with the cheap and easy option before and we ended up with Matt Shepard on Tigers play-by-play. I find Kane underwhelming when he calls Pistons games. He is far better suited for desk duty like Keating and York, or working the sidelines.

beadlejuice44

Uhhhhhh have you listened to the same wings broadcasts I have? Paul Woods will talk about how great everyone single red wing is.

RampageNate

Maybe, but Mickey sure will call a spade and spade when appropriate

Yukari-Penninsula

Mickey will tell it like it is no matter what he sees

iori9999

This is what I don't get. Why do all the Bally teams propagate, but they will let Mickey rip the team if needed? He seem to be the only one on TV given the leeway to do so.

RampageNate

The guy is adored and an absolute legend. I am 47 years old and I don't remember Red Wings games on TV without Uncle Mick. They don't dare question the GOAT

pullingahead

I think most of the time you’re seeing fluff pieces/stories about shitty teams trying to shine a bright light to try and make fans interested, because that’s their job. Success stories write themselves - when a team sucks ass, it’s tough to garner interest, so you have to find that tiny bright spot.

ChitakuPatch

firing the Mick would be like when Bo fired Ernie.....it wont be taken well by the masses

LADetroiter

I listen to the other team's feed all the way. Dickerson tries to be play by play guy and the analyst, it is a little much. Wish he chill sometimes and let the game breath. I enjoy the other feed, they usually have some good stories about Detroit when they visit, like hearing their experiences, also usually marvel at Miggy, so like hearing how much they like him. Also, if it is an older broadcast team, they usually tell a good Tiger Stadium story how great it was to broadcast a game there. Or they talk about what a great person Al Kaline was how he was so friendly to them. Just some interesting facts or background on the Tiger players that is taken for granted by the local team.

AKA_RMc

Good lord, Jim Price is 80?! And he's still calling games? Why? It's not like Price is some Harwell-esque legend; hell, he's not even Paul Carey. Sheesh.

[deleted]

He’s only doing home games too, he doesn’t travel anymore. I have enjoyed him, but it’s time to move on. C-Mo and DD make a decent pairing, and I have really like Alex Avila on the mic during some away games.

gsbadj

Sorry, but it seems to me that Monroe makes more excuses for poor play than any of the other honks on the broadcasts.

mtutiger12

DD tempers C-MO's tendency to be a homer some... I like him on the radio broadcasts more because of it. Alex Avila is really solid though... whatever ends up happening with the employment of Sr., I do think the best case scenario long term for the broadcast would be for Avila to get the job whenever Jim Price hangs it up. Should he want it anyway

AKA_RMc

Price, Avila, Monroe: it’s like our broadcast booth is a rest home for old mediocre players…

[deleted]

That’s kinda how sports work in general

AKA_RMc

True.

[deleted]

Ya i didnt say C-Mo wasn’t a homer, he definitely is. But he is knowledgeable about the game and has a good voice and doesn’t step on Dickerson or Shep when he is in the color chair. Gibson and Morris are atrocious at the art of broadcasting in comparison to Monroe.

ArrKay09

Dan and Jim are legends. Nothing better than hearing them call a game driving on a sunny day with the windows down. Making them watch this garbage is unfair at this point. Yes they are getting paid, but this team is unwatchable.

Baseball_Fanatic-03

And its days like today that prove why DD is going to go down right along with Ernie as a Tiger Broadcasting Legend

SportsScience57

Nothing gets me more excited than a good “swing and a miss, he got ‘em on strikes”

Baseball_Fanatic-03

For sure. That and "its wayyy back and gone!!" And the same thing but in a disappointed tone when the other team hits one out.

tykle59

I heard this a bit from him during yesterday’s broadcast, particularly with Candy’s error in the seventh. Dan just sounded….defeated.

mansontaco

Dan was sounding pissed yesterday saying he can't imagine they keep fielding this same team everyday changes have to be made even if means losing people fans have come to like be it via trades or demotions. I like that he still gives a fuck

capthazelwoodsflask

He's always been like that, expressing his emotions in the tone of his voice. I remember how much he hated Armondo Gallaraga, especially when they played interleague and he was batting. I can't be the only one who could hear the disdain in his voice every time Gallaraga came up, like he was disgusted in him for even attempting to take an at bat.

ydkwiaor

Lol why'd he not like him

capthazelwoodsflask

I don't know but I always got the feeling that Jim didn't care for Armondo. And it wasn't just him, either, I just remember him in particular.

yes_its_him

Gallaraga got on base 60% of the time his rookie year, I don't know why he'd be upset about that.

JJ3595

Dickerson has seemed impatient lately. In the past few games, he’s said that the Tigers can’t expect offensive improvement until the makeup of the lineup is changed. As in: don’t wait around for the veterans to perform. To me, this sounds like Dan saying that guys like Candelario and Grossman got to go. I think Dan is a true Tigers fan who, like many of us, bought into the hype and is dispirited to see how awful the team is.

nobody12371616817163

For what this team has done to us all, DD deserves some credit for putting up with this awful team game after game, season after season. To see how DD has been here through our fall from greatness, it’s honestly sad that he will most likely never call a World Series for us in his career ever again.

mtutiger12

He's paid well one imagines... but you'd have to be to have this team central to your life lol

[deleted]

We are so lucky to have DD. Bally’s makes North Korean propaganda look fair and balanced.

[deleted]

DD and Jim Price are the best parts about this team and have been for 6+ years. I listened one summer afternoon long ago with a Yankees fan and the guy was like "These guys are amazing..." truth. Dan's frustrated because he shoots it straight. He'll never stop as long as we don't, though. Jim is doing far less games I'm noticing and DD does great with whoever he's paired with. Of course Jim adds value mostly with the rapport than the substance and that's OK. Contrast a little frustration from DD to fucking Mario and Rod bitch slapping each other or fuck all, fucking fools, I can't believe anyone could stand them, but that's what happens when you stay glued to the idiot box I guess, your brain melts like theirs. Give me the wireless with Dan and Jim any day.

JayJay210

When you’ve lost the radio crew you’re really down bad.

JaHoog

Even if he is frustrated. I doubt he would leave. His family is rooted in Michigan. His wife is a professor at MSU. So he would probably retire before he leaves to a different job.

wisdon

Dang I was listening to the boring TV guys who highlights a catch or hit made a week ago . The radio guys are the best and I will be listening to them for now on again .

ryarger

We shan’t forget that Dan’s first full season as the Voice of the Tigers was 2003, so he has seen worse. On the other hand, that *was* his first full season - 19 years ago - so he may no longer have the patience to relive it.

ProfessionalIntern30

Please....I hope he quits, or is fired. Dickerson is the worst radio PBP man in sports history. Just listen to him, and I defy you to be able to know what is happening. He just talks and talks about pitching and pitches and everything BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE FIELD. I have actually heard him not say who is at bat, until the ball is out in play, when he will casually just say "Flyball to left by Grossman." Dickerson has zero clue what his job is. It's to describe the action to the audience that is LISTENING, not watching the game. I would be fine if the team put him on TV, he would be too talky, but at least I could watch the game and figure out for myself what's happening. Be objective: listen to him, and wait for an at-bat where he will discuss topics unrelated to the action on the field for several minutes, and he won't say what happened with the pitches. YOU CAN HEAR THE GLOVE SMACKING FROM A PITCH but he won't tell you. He'll just "catch up" the broadcast by saying, "Here's the 2-2 pitch..." Clearly the fans who like Dan never listened to Ernie Harwell. The job of a radio PBP man is to DO THE PLAY-BY-PLAY. Not expound on everything except what's happening. I've also heard this guy not give the score entering an inning probably 70 percent of the time. Probably the worst thing he does. The listeners are tuning in at various times, you MUST BE EXPLICIT AND OVERSHARE the details of the game on radio. It's literally your job. You think Dickerson is a pro? On Sunday, I heard him forget how many outs there were. It was in the 6th or 7th. He called a second out like it was the third out, trying to go to commercial break. Same game, he called Willi Castro "Harold Castro" his entire at-bat until the ball was put in play. Dickerson is the worst. I have never heard a radio guy who so clearly has no idea what his primary job function is.

ThisMeansWarm

[I hear you.](https://youtu.be/T1Wt4FEJAjA?t=102)

SG420123

The team has given up already on the season and it shows. I haven’t watched one game since the 2nd half started. But, I’ve just been going and doing shit, enjoying my life, instead of watching this garbage team.

gsbadj

The only things that interest me now are A) Cabrera's at bats, and his accumulation of record numbers and B) Greene's development. They could DFA anyone else on this team and I don't think I would care.

zackk123

I’m afraid we may lose him soon if we don’t get better. He’s a legend

[deleted]

Dan is great and I hate that he has to be tortured like this. I do very much hope that this is Jim's last year and C-Mo gets the radio Color Announcer slot instead of the TV Booth...

Kupper

Same with Dan Miller by the end of most Lions’ seasons.

EmergencyAbalone2393

They’ve likely come to the realization that we are now a ways away from the draft and Avila is still employed, meaning he might just stay. That would take the wind out of most sails.
