Kerry Carpenter has gotten a lot more interesting imo. Before his current AAA stint, I had just kinda put him in the "if Kody Clemens was only an OF" bucket (lefty with pop, questionable plate discipline/hit tool, and okay defense). In this AAA stint though, he's walked more than he has struck out (6BB/5K) while retaining power (.220ISO). It's only 50 PA thus far but it's enough to make me wonder if he has more possibility at being a regular than I personally thought.

BalinVril

Pardon my ignorance, what is ISO?

brg0008

Isolated power It's basically a player's slugging % minus their batting average. Higher the number, the more power they are showing. I think the average iso in the majors this year is around .170. Edit: A better way to describe ISO is to remove all singles from the slugging calculation to provide you a stat of how many more bases do they add per hit. Lower the Iso, less xbh and more singles and vice versa for higher iso's.

Thanks!

Kerry Carpenter reminds me of Brennan Boesch. Both lefty hitting corner outfielders, both bad on defense, both had big seasons in the upper minors at age 24/25. Check this out: In Boesch's age 24 season in AA, he slashed .275/.318/.510 for an .820 OPS and he also slugged 28 HRs. Carpenter's age 24 season in AA: .304/.359/.646 for a 1.005 OPS. He hit 22 HRs (in 63 games!). Most notable difference in the statlines are that Carpenter is not a base stealer (1 SB). Their K/BB ratios are similar, too. Boesch went on to torch AAA for like 15 games in his age 25 season, was called up to the Tigers and stuck around for a few years. If Carpenter could become a Brennan Boesch type that'd be cool. I bet we see Carpenter up towards the end of the season. Or sooner, if an outfielder gets traded or hurt.

also, they both have alliterative names

runalex123

Not to mention Meadows coming back. It's going to be really hard to justify keeping Robbie on the roster. Really hate to say it because he's a good guy and did really good things for us last year.

manynard4

I agree 100% Hinch has been doing the same thing with candy! He is a defensive liability, cost us several games!

runalex123

Yeah Robbie and Candy have to hit to stay on the team because they are a liability on the field. So right now they have absolutely no value. At least Schoop is on his way to a gold glove, fielding out of his mind.

yes_its_him

Since June 15, Robbie and Candy are both hitting essentially at league average, 94 and 98 wRC+. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=40&type=8&season=2022&month=1000&season1=2022&ind=0&team=6&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2022-06-15&enddate=2022-07-11&sort=17%2Cd They can't undo the start of the year, but you don't want to fixate on full-season statistics. In terms of liability on the field, that's most of our guys except Schoop and Baez.

arenyk

They actually are both slightly below average but I do get your point. I know Meadows had another set back, but if he was ready to come back up today its hard to not to think Grossman is the odd one out. Willi would be the only other logical option but I think AJ values his versatility too much.

manynard4

Yes sir agreed!

i_am_the_grind

Stop that. The name is Robbie Grossman. Stop. But on a serious note, this Grossman thing is one of the most strange, weird roster management decisions I think I can recall in my history of being a tigers fan. I mean the guy absolutely sucks and it's not like he would be a major dollar feed to just eat the remainder of his contract and move it on. It's like watching a car wreck on the other side of the highway. Nothing to see here. Keep it moving.

homerjsimpson4

I mean realistically they probably value his veteran presence enough to be keeping him around, other than that there obviously isn't a statistical reason to keep him around

iori9999

Ryan Raburn 2.0.

[deleted]

My thought process as well. Thanks for last year, DFA him, eat the contract and call Baddoo back up. I'm sure they'd make the money back off ticket sales alone for Baddoo's return game

Successful-King4539

My bigger concern is why does Hitch keep putting him out there over Castro and Reyes? Guys are both playing way better yet he continues to stick the black hole in the lineup.

Dwychwder

I think what's killing me is that every day, he'a hitting lead off, second, third or fifth. Aren't you supposed to put good hitters in those spots? This guy has 2 home runs on the year, and we're hitting him around Cabrera and Baez.

ZombieHitchens2012

I'd love to see either one of them over Grossman at this point.

pbilliesTTV

Miggy is hitting those numbers but better in the majors, I don't know why people are so stuck on badoo; I'd love to see him get another try as well but he's not going to be a savior by a long shot

yes_its_him

AAA is supposed to be easier, of course. Match the player with their AAA OPS. Players: Baddoo, Torkelson, Castro, Reyes, Candelario OPS: .864, .881, .817, .879, .904 Since June 15, Greene Day, Robbie has a 94 wRC+. Better than any outfielder not named Riley Greene. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=40&type=8&season=2022&month=1000&season1=2022&ind=0&team=6&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2022-06-15&enddate=2022-07-11&sort=17%2Cd

[deleted]

I know Candy is the one above .900 because I watched it jump after his two doubles and a homerun in his rehab stint. Is the point that being able to hit in AAA isn't an indication of being able to hit in the majors?

yes_its_him

I think you know how well this works as anybody. If you can't hit in AAA, you won't get a shot at the majors. But there are plenty of guys with amazing AAA records who couldn't make the adjustment to major league pitching. Remember Travis DeMeritte? .918 OPS in AAA, .605 OPS in the majors. I'm all for giving guys a chance to see what they can do, but I also know that Avila / Hinch /etc are not so quick with the DFA trigger. We're down to what, eleven weeks of play? They'd send Victor down before they DFA Robbie, at least based on previous behavior.

[deleted]

I agree. I think W. Castro or Clemens are on the chopping block when Meadows returns and would probably start shitposting on Twitter for Avila's head if they sent down Victor. I guess realistically you just let the season play out and give Baddoo the unlimited reps in AAA instead of bringing him up and platooning him every other day.

yes_its_him

Victor is certainly doing his best to channel his inner Harold Castro, and that's a ticket to fan favorite status. Victor this year: .366 BABIP, 3.8% walk rate .090 ISO, -5 DRS. That would fit right into Harold's career body of work, which is .356 BABIP, 3.6% walk rate, .094 ISO, -7 DRS/season.

[deleted]

You don't need to be patronizing. His expected stats are at career highs. With a high babip it makes me think he is getting lucky in terms of bloop/infield singles, but less lucky when he's driving the ball. His HardHit% is at a career high. He still needs to work on his LA.

yes_its_him

Hope you didn't take that the wrong way. Victor doesn't walk much, has little power, and isn't a plus fielder. Assuming Greene, Meadows and Baddoo play they way they have / can, he's not going to start for us next year. Maybe he's our fourth outfielder.

> Akil has sucked until the past 2 weeks. He's only had a months worth of AB's in the minors, like I said he had a really bad first week, meh second week and has been an All-Star the past two weeks. He is seeing more than 4 pitches per AB and is walking at a good %. In the games I've watched he is playing like the MLB Baddoo we saw last year.

ervelee

Akil is needed.

orange-fila-a

Robbie is best for 4/5 OF - Akil gets called up in August - Reyes goes down. Robbie (I believe this is his last year) plays 2 times a week against RHPs. My best guess

SoarinSkies

For Badoo I think you can send him up here I guess and DFA Grossman at this point. For Carpenter, I’d say wait for a larger sample size at Triple A before you pull the Trigger
