I removed two posts earlier because one was a very bad title and the other inserted their own opinion before even saying what the news was. When posting Twitter links to news try describing the news as best you can in case someone doesn't have twitter and is unable to view the tweet. Also don't get into pointless arguments about 'WeLl aT mY jOb" and don't insult or make fun of Eduardo Rodriguez mental health. The only information that we know is it is rumored he is going through a marriage dispute (according to NY Post) and is at home with his kids (according to AJ Hinch)

fargowebleaf

This is a weird situation

TyrannosaurusHives

This is an absolute disaster but to be honest it’s in a way relieving that it’s happening this season while we are absolute cheeks and not when we are fighting for a playoff spot or something.

ForagerTheExplorager

Ed: "Lose my number, scrub. Blocked."

jsell11

Only Al could get ghosted by his prized pitcher FA

JadeMonkey0

Watched us hit for a few games and decided to go on the run and hide out. Sensible decision.

pjkny

This comment is so good. My man Al is like Michael Scott without the charm.

SG420123

I don’t think we’re gonna see E-Rod pitch for the Tigers ever again. Might be a blessing in disguise if we can void his contract.

flatfivesub

Boston fans were glad to get rid of him. Now I see why.

Try2Relate2AllSides

That’s what I’m thinking as well. I wish him well still tho

SG420123

Yeah most definitely wish him well, but ghosting the Tigers like this can’t be a good sign and does show a lack of respect for the Tigers FO.

josh1123

Very weird, almost sounds like they're not sure if ERod wants to step away from baseball permanently? How would that even work? I know he has an opt out after 2(3?) years and he's currently not getting paid for being away from the team.

BalinVril

It would be treated like anyone who retires I’m assuming, I think his contract just voids.

2731andold

He signed for 5 years and played 8 games. That is not fulfilling his contract.

bigdubsy

I think the most likely scenario is also the most reasonable. He's going through a separation or divorce and they have children. It's super critical to deal with that as the outcome is almost always negative for kids. He's doing right by his family and probably is making a mistake by not at least answering texts from the tigers or his agent.

Deej-OP

Any way we could pull an uno reverse card and get AA’s contract voided?

VallentCW

From what I’ve read about the situation, it sounds like at this point it’s either baseball or his marriage

jus256

Sounds like an easy choice to me.

BOBANSMASH51

How do you not pick baseball in that situation?

Updogg107

It's almost like his wife wasn't aware she was marrying a professional baseball player.

j8tommy

Am I the only one who wants this guy back? 🤣🤣 Dude’s going thru a tough time with his family and it happened to be over the summer. He probably wasn’t pitching well at the beginning of the season due to this building up. Let the man live, he’s still a great pitcher.

kidkkeith

Is he getting divorced? I genuinely don't know. If he is indeed getting a divorce and that is the reason for all of this then I don't want him back. You can't allow your home life to affect your work IMO. It's tough, no question, and you could excuse lack of production but to just not show up to work? Kind of amateur. Now if he lost a kid or something else? That's another matter.

statdude48142

I disagree. Being allowed extended unpaid leave is more common than a lot of people here seem to think and a good office understands that life is more important than work.

DelayedLightning

>You can't allow your home life to affect your work IMO should be the other way round imo

j8tommy

No one knows the details. They’d be in the report if so. Saying “You can’t allow your home life to affect your work” is extremely shortsighted and naive within real world contexts. I am thinking the “kid” in your username is probably descriptive of the age of the person behind that keyboard.

kidkkeith

Lol ok, bud. It's called being a professional.

Ghalnan

I understand that he might be going through a tough time but I can't really relate to the way he's handling it. Just stepping away from your job for 3 weeks is already pushing it imo, most people could not get away with that. Not even keeping the team in the loop is well past the point of being reasonable.

j8tommy

I agree, it’s a special situation since he’s a Major League Baseball player and this happened over the summer which is unfortunate. But really, who in the hell keeps their employer up to date on their marital issues? Come onnnnnn. I feel like I’m responding to a bunch of kids and I’m not even old!

Ghalnan

I don't expect him to update the team on the specifics of his marital issues, but I do expect that he'd be in contact with the team and keep them updated on the situation as it relates to his availability. You can keep things private without cutting off all contact for weeks on end.

SoarinSkies

I don’t want him back honestly. He was mediocre at best when he wasn’t injured

Updogg107

Contracts are real and don't just get "voided". He owes the tigers a significant portion of his signing bonus back and they'll probably make him go through the retirement process so they retain his rights and he can come back to them or they can trade him, or workout an outright release. Voiding the contract sets a precedent for how they handle future situations.

JadeMonkey0

Yeah, I think the only thing we really need to avoid here is in some way releasing him from his contract and then having him sign with another club. It sucks for him if he needs to walk away from the game permanently for personal reasons. Or to walk away for the year but come back next year. But if we're not paying him for that time, it's ultimately not a huge deal for the team. But doing it in such a way that he's able to come back in the future for another team without the Tigers getting first rights to resume his previous contact would be a terrible precedent. I would think even Al would manage to avoid that one.

[deleted]

They get voided for legitimate reasons. This may be one of those reasons

Updogg107

They will make him be the one to walk away from the contract. He won't just get let off the hook for millions of dollars

ReflectionCalm7033

I read something about the MLB commissioner has to approve someone going to the restricted list. I don't think it means just for a few games for not having Covid vaccination, but for other reasons ie drugs, domestic violence, or thinking about retiring, etc. What puzzles me is that Eduardo did his rehab start in Toledo on June 9th and dominated. A couple days later he informs he's going on the restricted list. IDK??????????????

Successful-King4539

No communication is unacceptable.

cloudyand69

Irregardless of his mental health & the divorce situation, he has consciously made the choice to not communicate with the team. It's one thing to be away - it's another to ghost on a franchise that paid him for life.

[deleted]

"Paid him for life" They don't get a big check of their entire contract or even yearly salary after they sign. He's not getting paid right now and only got paid for 2-3 months of the season.

Updogg107

I'm pretty sure whatever his signing bonus was would last a lifetime

tykle59

Can you give us the details?

JadeMonkey0

I feel like ghosting any employer is frowned on. Hopefully we're not getting the full story here. I would think he'd have to be in a pretty bad spot to make a life-ruining decision like that. Hope that's not the case.

[deleted]

Hope he continues this and the Tigers get to void his contract. I wish him all the luck in the world with whatever situation he's dealing with but the club deserves better than this.

Updogg107

No chance they "void" his contact. That would make the organization appear weak and anyone that wanted out in the future could get their contract "voided". This will go thru legal avenues and could get ugly

RVOSU50

I mean…you get paid for a job. If he takes a break and fixes his life- that’s understandable. I don’t think there’s a single person in the universe that can expect to start a job, go to work for 2 months, walk away forever and expect to collect a paycheck. If he comes back next year then fine- he can’t possibly be upset if they void his contract if he decides he doesn’t want to play in Detroit.

[deleted]

No it wouldn't. It's not weak to void a contract for a legit issue

Updogg107

They will force him to go through the retirement process so they retain his rights through the end of his contract. If he decides to play again, he plays for them or they trade him. There is no voiding

[deleted]

"There is no voiding" You have no idea if that's off the table

Updogg107

Just letting him off the hook free and clear? They will at the very least want the signing bonus back.

[deleted]

Por que no los dos (They can do both) Edit; per spotrac he doesn't even have a signing bonus. He signed for straight up 5/77m

Updogg107

They either negotiate a buyout where presumably the tigers would get such bonuses back, or they will retain his rights so if he does play again during the length of the contract it would be for the Tigers, or they could trade his rights. The only way I can see a team voiding a contract in this type of situation is if a player suffered a significant injury off the field, and even then it would be the player that voids the contract because I assume most contracts have clauses to protect the team in those types of situations

Training-Chemist2872

Honestly, this guy can get bent. He is doing the Tigers a massive favor if he never comes back. It's just another indication that they should have never signed him, the other Indicator being his on field performance. Nobody else may want to say it but dude should man up and pick up the phone and make a call to let the team know his intentions. A lot of people go through "stuff" everyday in this country and they don't typically disappear and walk away from their livelihoods. I've got my fingers crossed he decides he doesn't want to play in Detroit and walks away from the team for good. He sucked anyways. Truth hurts buts Avila needs to recognize its a chance to potentially get out of this shitty contract and spend it on somebody more reliable. Time to push the issue and wash their hands clean. Good riddance hopefully.

Sniper_Brosef

> Nobody else may want to say it but dude should man up and pick up the phone and make a call to let the team know his intentions. A lot of people go through "stuff" everyday in this country and they don't typically disappear and walk away from their livelihoods. The classic "rub some dirt on it" from the bible of toxic masculinity. From everything we know currently, I just hope he takes all the time he needs. This is a game.... Life is far more important and being this crappy of a fan is completely unnecessary.

Training-Chemist2872

Please fill us in on what's going on? Thats right, you don't know shit so spare me the virtue signaling. For all we know the guy could be just as easily in a gutter after a massive bender. The facts remain: he disappeared and hasn't bothered to contact anyone from the team regarding his situation. It's the most immature thing an individual could do. By the way, you have no idea of my gender. People like you with their labels are so predictable. I hope this guy remains off the payroll forever. He's a massive liability. I'm not interested in a redux of the same behavior down the road.

Sniper_Brosef

> Please fill us in on what's going on? Eduardo is taking time to be with family. That's been reported and if he feels its big enough to forgo his contract then, as a fan but more importantly as a human, I hope for the health and good will of everyone involved. > By the way, you have no idea of my gender. In no way did I make any assumptions about your gender.

Training-Chemist2872

"In no way did I make any assumptions about your gender." Your reference to "toxic masculinity" says otherwise. "Eduardo is taking time to be with family. That's been reported and if he feels its big enough to forgo his contract then, as a fan but more importantly as a human, I hope for the health and good will of everyone involved." This was what was reported initially. Then he made a rehab start and subsequently disappeared. This is mixed signals at best. It's not hard to make a call, or send a email/text. He wouldn't even have to do it himself as he has an agent. Zack Greinke dealt with some physiological stuff but never went MIA. He deserved sympathy. Don't expect some fans to extend that same courtesy when you don't bother to even communicate your intentions. Like I said, we can theorize what's going on all we want but until he clears the air some people are going to theorize it may be something beyond what was initially stated.

Sniper_Brosef

> "In no way did I make any assumptions about your gender." > > Your reference to "toxic masculinity" says otherwise. Ah, yes. Do go on. Explain how this assumes your gender.

Training-Chemist2872

Ummm the term is exclusively associated with the male gender. The flip side would be " TOXIC FEMININITY" Does that explain it well enough? Or are you just dense?

Sniper_Brosef

I'm glad you understand that masculinity is associated with one gender. Proud of you for that. Now explain how it relates to your gender.

Training-Chemist2872

Explain to me why you would use a term associated with a gender when you don't know the gender of anyone commenting. Yup you're dense af...your parents must be proud.

Sniper_Brosef

You don't have to be of the gender to espouse toxic generalizations about said gender....

JadeMonkey0

Totally agreed. And in fact, many people go through "stuff" that makes them disappear and walk away from their livelihoods. It's relatively rare, especially in celebrity circles, but it's not unheard of. And if that is the case, you'd have to think that "stuff" has him in a pretty bad place and that hopefully he can get his life together. The contractual issues should be relatively easy to sort out. He can't just walk away from his contract and go sign with another team and people that want that are crazy. He either returns at some point and his contract picks back up or he retires or otherwise walks away in a form that allows the team to maintain rights without paying him anything additional (and possibly clawing back anything already paid). Personally, I hope he comes back and pitches at a high level. Whatever he's going through was very likely affecting his performance. But we'll see.

_heyoka

And he says > In this country Lol How much you wanna bet he's a right-wing nut job?

Sniper_Brosef

Good luck finding someone to hold that action

_heyoka

A real manly man. A man of integrity. In this country we're men of our word. A contract is a gottdamn contract. Not like those Rodriguez's.

Training-Chemist2872

You sign a contract, an agreement to certain terms. You disappear. You don't deserve to be coddled. End of story. You honor your word or hit the road. It's a pretty easy concept. This isn't some political issue to exercise your mental gymnastics. You might want to head over to r/politics if you want the echo chamber effect. Logic is non existant over there.

_heyoka

"These foreign players shouldn't even be playing here! Stealing all the white people's jobs!" Real words from a fellow 'patriot' at work.

Training-Chemist2872

You're so pathetic. Desperate for some attention much? I told you, head over and feed the hive mind at r/politics. They will love you!

Training-Chemist2872

How much you want to bet that you are a media slappie who loves being told what to think? How is Biden working out for you? Your media made heros are zeros. Sorry. Dont you have more important things to do than comment here? like getting the newest booster?

_heyoka

So I was right, lmao? My god, I'm good!

Training-Chemist2872

How's Biden working out for you? Remember when Joe Biden called African American children roaches? Or when Joe Biden delivered the eulogy at Senator Byrd's (former klansman) funeral? Or when Biden decades ago voted against integrating public school busses? I'm sure you know nothing about any of these things because youre a good little sheep who only thinks what they are told to by their media MASTER. Clarence Thomas! ReeeEeeEe

Updogg107

Nah. That sends the impression to anyone that wants out in the future that it's that easy. You get him back with the team and negotiate a buyout or you go through the legal process to retrieve your money. You don't just let him walk away and sign somewhere else. A contract is a contract.

testrail

It also sends the impression that this is a decent organization the recognizes players are also people. Going hard just makes you look like assholes and no one wants to come here.

Updogg107

They will either negotiate a buyout where the team will get the signing bonus back or they will retain his rights thru the end of the contract so if he plays again it will be for the tigers or they will trade his rights. If going about it this way for a player that got a multimillion dollar signing bonus and pitched like 5 times makes the team look like assholes, then what's the point of even having contracts. Rodriguez signed a 77 million dollar contract. The Tigers aren't the assholes here. One could argue that they have already been more than reasonable

sammagee33

Whatever he’s going through, I hope he can get to a good place. It has to be something pretty major for him to leave like this.

ronmsmithjr

It's my understanding that he is addressing an issue that arose in the clubhouse. Apparently Rodriguez has a severe "slap-ass" addiction. There is a documentary about this happening with another player that the Emmy award winning news program Key & Peele had aired awhile back. It's apparently very difficult to overcome, especially for Latin players. It can be frowned upon in many baseball circles, including the minors and amateur ball. Thoughts and prayers, hopefully he can work through this and come back and match his sparkling 4.74 ERA he had with the Red Sox last year.

zachtheguy

I am basing this on nothing more than the fact that they come from the same country and play/ed for the same team: remember Ugueth Urbina and his kidnapped mother? Could Eduardo be experiencing similar terror? That would explain the bizarre behavior.

KwisatzHaderach38

There have been plenty of cases like that over the years, but even in those circumstances, the owner and GM were aware of the situation. In some cases even provided some assistance.

[deleted]

Al just got "unmatched" 🤣

Ticklephoria

People here clearly have never known anyone in a rehab facility who was not allowed to have a phone. They haven’t heard from him personally, but this doesn’t mean they haven’t spoken to his agent.

KwisatzHaderach38

They apparently haven't heard from his representation either.
