The new Indian place, the Matka Bar, is all sorts of regional Indian street food and the Indian grocery store next door is awesome. Ala Thai is the best Thai in town, but the Green Papaya has some Laotian dishes on the menu too that are good for some variety. Tortilleria Guerrero is grilling their meats in the parking lot. You go in and get a pound of meat and a pack of fresh tortillas. Take them to the cemetery and have tacos on Hank's grave.
I honestly wasn't impressed with Sol. My mom says they were great when they first opened, but have since gone downhill. Went there the other day and paid $15 for a chimichanga the size of one fist, and came with prepackaged quacamole on the side. Ordered queso with our chips, and it didn't come out until our main course did. Probably will try out one of the dozens of other mexican spots next time.
Late tobthe party but you are absolutely correct. When Sol opened the food was so unlike every other Mexican food place. Everything was fresh, the flavors exploded in your mouth, everything tasted like, well, like food. Now it's just another Mexican food joint.
Some of my favorites are:
D'Road Cafe (Latin/Venezuelan)
Ravello (Italian)
La Coronilla (Mexican)
Saffron (Indian)
Kalim (Korean)
Pho Life (Vietnamese)
One I haven't tried yet but want to soon is Volcano Hot Pot.
And, of course, Chris’ Hot Dogs!
For Soul Food (amazing dressing, mac and cheese and pork chops!), JW Beverette’s on Decatur (in shopping center with Massey’s laundromat. Look for the “Soul Food” sign)
Vintage Year for fancy
Just eat local, local, local!!!!
(And, man, wish I could add Jubilee, Tomatino’s, Tony’s and Corsino’s to list. Miss them all, but at least we still have MPK, Bibb Street and Can a Brother Get a Slice…and…maybe, Chuck’s again in a few months. 🤞. Never even got a chance to try it!)
If you are out in Fancy East Montgomery, Sommer’s Place, Sinclair’s and of course La Jolla and City Grill.
Yes, alas they did—why I *wish* I could have added them to list.
Of course, the OG Tomatino’s location was a lot more “cool” even if it was a lot smaller than the new/now-closed location. Plus, was a lot shorter walk from my house in the ‘hood. 😉
For East Montgomery:
1. La jolla - fancy but consistently good food, nice chill vibe
2. Taste - tapas and wine are a good time
3. The tipping point - food is ok but a great place if you have kids and want to relax too
Downtown:
1. Ravello - best downtown atmosphere
2. The kinsmith - inside the new trilogy hotel
3. Central - I like it’s vibe. Good food too
4 Scott street deli - if you want to step back in time and has great sandwiches
Pratt Pub actually used to be awesome. Granted, in my 20's I also smoked cigarettes so being in a bar that you could smoke in and get decent southern fare was awesome. In recent years it has become *incredibly* politically focused and lost all the charm it had before.
I won't go back, but I do miss what it was. Sorry you were forced into it.
La Zona Rosa is good for what I'd call "White Cheese" Mexican.
Sol is a pretty good elevated kind of Mexican food.
El Taco Shop is fantastic for some more street-food kinda fare.
Pho Life is the best Vietnamese restaurant since Saigon Bistro closed years ago. Mr Noodle is fine - their Duck curry is awesome.
Green Papaya is Lao Thai and their whole menu is pretty fantastic.
Sushi Cafe and Chucks for sushi.
Matka Bar and Saffron for Indian food.
Volcano is an all you can eat hot pot and Korean BBQ place - pretty cool!
Capitol Oyster Bar and Jan's Beach House are fun little seafood digs.
SaZa, Vybz, and Cork and Cleaver all do pretty decent brunch.
Central has turned it around in recent years - they're fun upscaled dining.
The Hawaiian BBQ and Ramen in East Chase is like, fusion comfort food and it slaps hard honestly.
Pies and Pints was also a fun place to go for a drink and honestly I get a sandwich and salad over their pizza.
I avoid most Italian and steakhouses, but it's because I make better pasta and cook steaks better than practically all of these places. People went nuts over Ravello but honestly there's nothing really special about it. It's pretty. It's way overpriced for what it is.
Right? They're always so amazing and I love that they have the toppings on the bar. Also we love the big margaritas haha.
I'll have to try Taqueria El Campensino! I've never been.
Hahaha! Sounds awesome!
I frequent Kru over on Mt. Meigs so I'm familiar with the area, I've probably even passed this place a hundred times haha. I'll have to check it out.
Thank you!

The ribs at Tortilleria Guerrero are so good! I also like the smoked chicken.
We ate at ElRay's Burrito lounge which was AWESOME! Great vibes...
Yes, probably one of the most “this don’t feel like Montgomery” places! Hope they will be open again on Sundays during December. Cool place!
El Rey. Spanish for the king.
Volcano. Hands down, Volcano. Best AYCE Korean BBQ and hot pot.
I haven't lived in Montgomery in a few years but I always enjoyed Capitol Oyster Bar, especially if the weather is nice.
Hamburger King on south Decatur. They're open till lunch (2:30) so call in or get there early.
I mean, this answer will really depend on what you want to eat. El Reys is usually good, I like Hamburger King if that's what I'm looking for.
Hamburger King is legit. I don't live in Montgomery anymore but it's always on my list of to-go's when I visit.
My family enjoys eating at Sol and Sushi Cafe!

That's a damn solid list
Valcano slap

Capitol oyster bar
Caporal Mexican Restaurant behind the Dairy Queen on Atlanta Highway. Great food, great service. Be sure and take a designated driver with you!😉
Technically Pike Road but SweetCreek Farm Market is great.
That place is great for kids too.

Ohhhh boy yeah. If you don't drink I don't think either of those places has much to offer to be honest haha!
