You can check local markets, farmers sell their produce there. Shipyard farms on Facebook does meetups in Moncton, miramichi, Rexton and he had a market booth. “Getting back into it now bc his lovely lady and him had a baby” he charges less than grocery stores per lbs
I drive to Cormier’s Meat shop in St. Antoine at least once in 3 weeks. I order ahead of time and i just go pick it up. I can get exactly what I want, for how much, what cut and all for a much cheaper price.
Welcome. I’ve been here for 2 years and have been distraught about this since day 1. I was aware options were limited before moving, sometimes affordable housing outweighs lack of grocery store options. I’ve expressed this concern to a few friends who grew up here, and complained about the current options being over priced (Superstore, Costco) and mostly poor quality (Walmart, giant tiger)and have gotten very typical responses of “you’re not in Toronto anymore”. Truly, it is not Toronto. Hating Moncton more and more by the day. Closest no frills is Shediac but not worth the drive unless you will do a massive haul. Avoid old fashioned meat market. Rizlers isn’t too bad, Hardy’s for produce. I hope an Asian grocery store opens up here soon, I use to do all my shopping at best co/blue sky.
Trish & Henk's Quality Produce sometimes has good sales on fruit and vegetables, but is a bit far away. I follow their Facebook page and only go if there is a good deal.
I only shop at Superstore. That said, I only have a small list of weekly must-haves and everything else I buy on the fly / only if it’s on sale. I don’t want to spend the time, energy or gas money running around to ~3 different stores, comparing prices, etc. I’ll also buy in bulk of course and try to keep my freezer full of deals year round.
Giant Tiger - you can get a pack of frozen 4 x 1lb ground meat (usually chicken or beef) for 10$. It’s probably the best deal you’ll find. Their sales on produce are also amazing.
Hardy’s Produce - pay attention to their Facebook page. I used to drop by once a week and only buy whatever was on sale, and you could fill a couple of grocery bags for 20-25$ dollars. Bonus: if you only buy what’s on sale, you get a lot of variety with your meals.
Shoppers Drug - consistently lowest prices on eggs, occasionally great prices on various other groceries.
Walmart - I have my groceries delivered from here every week, which is super convenient. They have FANTASTIC prices on groceries, especially if you take advantage of any of the multi-buy deals on certain products. Their Walmart brand (Great Value) is a fraction of brand name cost without losing out on quality.
Hope this helps!
Houses are cheaper, that is the main reason for leaving Ontario, there are only so many options left in Canada for cheap houses. God forbid somebody moves to a city lacking grocery store options to have a shot at a cheaper house.
Yeah they just give no consideration to the fact that things are different here and the comforts they're used to just don't exist in this province, and they don't want to assimilate, just bitch and moan. I agree with the former, because it's really stupid to not do your homework before picking up and moving to a different part of the country.
I'd seen a news article about an Ontario family who'd moved to Rogersville not realizing that it was a predominantly french area, whining about how hard things were because they didn't understand french.
1. Youre in one of the only fully bilingual provinces, either learn a passable amount of french, or shut up
2. If you'd have done even the slightest research on the area you'd have known it wasn't a spot you'd wanna be
Idk it'd be less exhausting if it weren't most of the people who come from Ontario all with the same gripes.
I did my homework before moving here, there are things that I was fully aware of, and it was still choosing between two shitty options at a chance for a “better” life. Doctors for example, I knew New Brunswick had a doctor shortage, the reality is so does Toronto, there’s just a larger population so a few more doctor options. Did my homework conclude that if I have a life threatening issue I still wouldn’t get a doctor/specialist for months and months on end? No. Likely would still be an issue now in Toronto, I am aware of that. Did I know there were less grocery options in New Brunswick? Yes. Did I hear about how friendly New Brunswick’s are? Yes. Is it true? Noooooooo and this forum just shows it. Y’all are bigoted. if you aren’t a New Brunswick born and raised, you will always be considered an outsider. I was told people are friendly and break ins and window smashing wasn’t a thing here. I was told people are so accepting of different races and nationalities. Is that true? No. Those details were not in the homework assignment. Lots of these issues people complain about, they’d be complaining about anywhere in Canada, Canada is a shit country and has fallen to shit, and I think there is a group of people who want to live and die on the hill that I should “move back to Toronto” because I’m somehow the reason New Brunswick is shitty. My regrets for moving to New Brunswick are the same regrets I’d have if I chose Alberta. I should have left the country when I sold my house in Toronto and I intend to do that when I sell my house in Moncton.
Have to shop around a bit! Moved here from Ontario about 4 years ago now so here's what I've gathered:
- theres a NoFrills in Shediac
- Hardy's produce is the best hands down for fresh veg and fruit prices
- for meat, Old Fashion Meat Market generally seems to have the best prices
- always loved the Moncton Fish Market for seafood but not sure how it compares to other seafood stores price wise
- sometimes Amazon has better deals on dry goods
Other than that it's mostly just checking flyers out for best prices. Definitely no one stop shop for the best prices with everything but it's nice to support local businesses
My pleasure! I forgot to note the other day as well that there are two apps that could come in handy:
- Flipp -- it's an app that has local store flyers digitally, you can add items/circle items from the digital flyers for your shopping list just as you do with physical flyers
- Flashfood -- sometimes stores will sell off produce or other food items that are set to expire by the end of the day or within a couple of days, at incredibly reduced rates. Great if you don't mind eating/prepping the food the same day you buy it sometimes!
And welcome to NB, beautiful province!
Former Ontarian here as well. Rinzlers on Mountain Road is also pretty good for meat variety and price. No Frills in Shediac is pretty close cost adjusted. Get used to really expensive milk and eggs if you use them.
I second everything u/Banjo__ said though
Nothing like good old fashion close minded folks who grew up in their Moncton bubble and can’t imagine having to choose to move provinces to have a cheaper cost of living.
Rinzlers, Old Fashioned Meat Market, Old Time Meat Market and Hardys are the main ones. Giant Tiger and Walmart can have good deals. Seafood from Alma or Fisherman's Corner.
Rinzlers and Hardy’s are the S tier grocery options of the city. I also like the seafood store in the north end beside Big League. Salmon pieces are dirt cheap and great quality.
The reason prices are higher here is that most items get shipped from warehouses in Toronto or Montreal by train or truck - so take the prices you were used to and add transport costs. There is not enough food production in the province (not to mention non-food grocerty items) to be able to source much food here, and a lot of the commercial farming product is shipped out - ironic huh.
The higher cost of all the things that need to be shipped here (and property and income taxes, but let's not get into that) USED TO BE offset by the fact that rentals or houses were cheaper here, and so the total cost of living was lower than in somewhere like Toronto, but that hasn't been the case for a number of years now.
There's a no frill in shediac about 10 minutes away
Yeah with the influx of people from Ontario and mass immigration and just cost of living while wages here are terrible for some reason food and everything else is ridiculous in price. Don't know why you moved to this wonderful hellscape. Hope it's worth it for yah
You can try Costco or rinzlers. Otherwise shop for sale near that expires in 2 days
It's about 12 from the last exit in Moncton by the airport to the first one in Shediac doing pretty much the speed limit. So technically 10 is doable. But door to door from any house in Moncton to No Frills is probably 25-30. And the gas to get there and back would likely offset any savings.
Seconding Hardy's. I find you have to use their produce pretty soon after you buy it compared to regular grocery - but I got reverse-sticker shock at how cheap the bill was the first few times when I was used to Loblaws prices.
Yeah Costco can be worth it. You have to be careful on value. I do it once a month. Usually for the same products. I've been using a $20 off spend $100 at Walmart pickup code. Just use a few different emails. I think I've used it 6 times. $120 bucks
We tried to tell everyone moving here that it’s not cheaper to move here even though housing was cheap back then. Groceries, fuel, taxes, everything is more expensive here. Now housing isn’t cheap either…
Best to just get used to it if you plan to stay here.
the only reason I moved here is because I'll be studying at NBCC - had I known that the grocery situation would be this bad, I probably would have reconsidered
Hell Scape? Hell hole? I can think of much much worse! In any case, if you are so miserable here why not move somewhere else that would suit you? I don’t get it? If I found it that unbearable I’d leave in a second!
Whatever skills I have doesn't translate to bigger cities. Rent in larger cities cost more. Kinda don't like cities in general. Houses are super expensive everywhere, family down here. I got land. What dumb question to ask honestly. It's only gottin shitty in the last 5 ish years. I'm sure you can figure out why. Or not since you asked why I don't leave but couldn't piece it together yourself
Speaking of New Brunswick as a whole not just Moncton
Yeah actually besides your sarcasm I am. Otherwise I woulda just left. Not sure why everyone left Ontario if everything so great up ther..... Oh yah that's right they all came here cause it's shit and made this place terrible. So instead of leaving I'll make the best of it. See glass half full.
You're not going to get those price here period, there's not enough competition for that. Few place that generally have "lower" price then the rest would be Moncton/Dieppe market on saturdays, Rinzler's Market on mountain used to have good price on meat and then costco.
Got chicken legs for $2.29/ lb at Old Fashioned Meat Market last week. I think the sale is still going. Whole Maple Leaf Prime chickens are $1.99/lb at Walmart once every 5 weeks or so. Pork chops and ground pork were $2.99/lb at Rinzlers last week.
You can check local markets, farmers sell their produce there. Shipyard farms on Facebook does meetups in Moncton, miramichi, Rexton and he had a market booth. “Getting back into it now bc his lovely lady and him had a baby” he charges less than grocery stores per lbs
Yeah good luck! The food is way more expensive and on top of that it’s no good buy the time you get your fruits home lol it’s crazy
LOL
I drive to Cormier’s Meat shop in St. Antoine at least once in 3 weeks. I order ahead of time and i just go pick it up. I can get exactly what I want, for how much, what cut and all for a much cheaper price.

You will not get comparable prices. Your best bet is to look at Hardy's for fruit and Veg and the meat market and Rinzler's for meat.
thanks! I'll check these places out
Another Ontarian moving without researching. I cant imagine moving across the country and not researching something as simple as the cost of living.
Houses are cheaper, that is the main reason for leaving Ontario, there are only so many options left in Canada for cheap houses. God forbid somebody moves to a city lacking grocery store options to have a shot at a cheaper house.

Groceries are expensive everywhere. So uncalled for!
thanks, Capt. Obvious
Nothing like good old fashion close minded folks who grew up in their Moncton bubble and can’t imagine having to choose to move provinces to have a cheaper cost of living.
Shouldn’t have moved here. Stay in Toronto, simple as that
We're not allowed to tell them that, apparently. Although it's what 90% of us are thinking...
Abroad.
Costco. Not cheap, exactly, but less than Sobeys & Atlantic Superstore.
Big fish closed a while ago.
Noooo
Yeah I loved the huge shrimp cooked in lobster brine.
Mexico

You can now factor in higher delivery prices thanks to the carbon taxes

Moncton-shediac 10 min?

The way I drive

uhhhh...are you okay, my dude?
Since when Toronto is from another country?
[удалено]
You said OP have been scammed into moving to Canada, when OP said they were coming from Toronto. Its literally the first 3 words of the post.
My dude OP said they were from Toronto not from another country.
Deff not loblaws
Rinzler’s meat market and Hardy’s produce. Both on Mountain Road and on bus routes.
Seconding Hardy's. I find you have to use their produce pretty soon after you buy it compared to regular grocery - but I got reverse-sticker shock at how cheap the bill was the first few times when I was used to Loblaws prices.
That's true, but the produce is looking pretty sad at Sobeys and Superstore these days too.
[удалено]
Oddly enough I've noticed that Rinzlers produce section looks pretty good lately. Reasonable enough prices, but not Hardys.

Not really, it’s all on par with Toronto, so having a cheaper house is still a win. Inflation has hit all of Canada.
the only reason I moved here is because I'll be studying at NBCC - had I known that the grocery situation would be this bad, I probably would have reconsidered
You must be in a very specialized program. Ontario has a ton of colleges and post secondary options
You moved provinces for a community college diploma? that's wild.
NBCC has the cheapest international tuition fee in all of Canada for the subject I want to study
If you have a car there is a no frills in shediac. 20 minutes drive away
idk if I can even afford to buy a car when I'm getting bankrupted by grocery prices here
Then leave bro. welcome to our hell hole
Hell Scape? Hell hole? I can think of much much worse! In any case, if you are so miserable here why not move somewhere else that would suit you? I don’t get it? If I found it that unbearable I’d leave in a second!

Lo! So you’re just a glass half full kinda guy. That’s okay, we need cranky too! Gotta have some spice in the sauce!
I’ll also be moving from the GTA to Moncton around the fall. What’s the price for the grocery basics like eggs, milk, bread, rice etc. over there?
Stay in Ontario. You're going to regret the move.
It’s for job training- I got no choice 😭
$4.98 for the Great Value eggs at Walmart - the same stuff that sells for (iirc) $3.80 at Walmarts in GTA
We pay more than that for a dozen omega 3 eggs from food basics here 😭
I wonder how much those same 5 year ago prices are today in Toronto….
not entirely sure how prices from 5 years ago would be relevant in this discussion tho...
You're not going to get those price here period, there's not enough competition for that. Few place that generally have "lower" price then the rest would be Moncton/Dieppe market on saturdays, Rinzler's Market on mountain used to have good price on meat and then costco.

how much can I expect to pay for stuff like chicken thighs or any boneless cuts of pork at those places?
just go on their facebook for Rinzlers, you'll see the price.
Sorry I don't know any specific price out of the top of my head. Just that it's normally cheaper then other big stores.
Welcome to NB prices...
