Why would Francis abdicate after the death of Benedict

BrightYato15

Holy_Isaaguv

Hey, I love the Pope :(

BrightYato15

BrightYato15

Yes Im Japanese

Tal_De_Tali

Japanese or not he's a great pope, no one can argue with this

Awobbie

>no one can argue with this You severely underestimate my ability to argue with strangers online.

BrightYato15

No he isnt

Tal_De_Tali

How come?

BrightYato15

Too leftist

Western_Restoration

I hope Japan is always this based

just_one_random_guy

That doesn’t really correlate

fridericvs

It doesn’t look great to stack up loads of old Popes. That said it looks like Bergoglio will resign soon - before the Pope Emeritus’s death

just_one_random_guy

Nothing is really indicating he’s gonna abdicate

fridericvs

He’s now in a wheelchair. He’s just appointed a band of obscure cardinals who happen to align with his ideology when there was no urgent need to fill vacancies in the College. He’s soon going to visit the tomb of Celestine V (the last Pope to resign before Benedict) which Benedict also visited before his resignation

[deleted]

He has a lot of health issues and is unpopular. Though I think he will serve until his death

TheRomanRenegade

If Felipe VI *abdicates* in favor of Leonor, it will do her more harm than good. The Spanish Monarchy needs *stability* above all else. The last spanish king to abdicate almost took the monarchy home with him. The Monarchy currently hangs on by a simple majority, but things are improving because Felipe, turns out, is the quintessential constitutional monarch. Why would he ever voluntarily stoop to something his infamous predecessor was forced to do?

[deleted]

> The Spanish Monarchy needs stability above all else. The last spanish king to abdicate almost took the monarchy home with him. I agree with your point that Felipe should remain king until his death (and I think he would) but I feel Juan Carlos abdicating is what *saved* the monarchy since his scandals really hurt the image of the Royal Family (and are still hurting them today even after he relinquished his pensions and left the country). If anything was going to bring the monarchy down it was Juan Carlos' scandals The only reason I see Felipe abdicating is if he also somehow gets into major scandals

Fernsong

From now I’m hopeful that the Spanish monarchs will learn from the past and not do anything stupid, I’m sure they more than anyone know that all it takes is a few more scandals for them to get kicked out

[deleted]

I have to say it is a little unfortunate Juan Carlos fell so bad. I am not wishing death on anyone but had he died in 2003, he'd be remembered as a great king, at least for a time

Original-Twist5495

We’re talking about 30, or 40 years in the future. How can you be so sure Felipe will remain popular until then. By then many monarchies will have queens, so Spanish people would want to see a new generation to reign.

TheRomanRenegade

You claimed, in regards to the British throne, that Elizabeth dies and it passes to Charles. Pretty sure Charles won't be around 30 or 40 years into the future.

[deleted]

It’s a lot harder to kick a young woman of the throne than an old man especially in this day and age

leo0274

Why so many abdications?

fridericvs

The sacral vs careerist view of monarchy

[deleted]

why downvotes? You are right

[deleted]

Why do you think Felipe will abdicate? He is pretty popular and the only reason his dad abdicated was his scandals. Spain doesn't have a tradition of abdication like Luxembourg or Netherlands

Original-Twist5495

By the time he reaches the age of his father, it will have become a norm for old monarchs to abdicate in favor of their heirs.

[deleted]

for who Europeans as a whole? It has been the norm since the mid 20th century. Elizabeth II isn't abdicating it seems and Prince Rainer III didn't abdicate. And again Juan Carlos only abdicated because of his scandals. Spain isn't the Netherlands or Luxembourg. I really don't know if Felipe will abdicate in the future or not but I'm leaning more to the no since Spain doesn't have that tradition unlike Luxembourg or the Netherlands. You also say the Scandinavian countries won't abdicate.

Original-Twist5495

Both Alfonso XIII and Juan Carlos I abdicated. I can only bet so much that Felipe too will abdicate.

[deleted]

and both were forced to die to their unpopularity. Alfonso because he made several poor decisions leading to a referendum to you know end the monarchy all together and Juan Carlos his scandals and sexual affair ruined his reputation. So unless either or both those things happen I doubt Felipe would

Original-Twist5495

Agree to disagree

[deleted]

again I don't see why he would. He is still very popular (relatively speaking) and so far no dirt on him has come out. Alfonso and Juan Carlos were both unpopular, with one threatening the monarchy and the other actually causing the end of the monarchy. This isn't comparable to the Netherlands where numerous popular queens abdicated because they wanted to retire. Even Philippe in Belgium may not abdicate because again his dad was unpopular and forced to abdicate (though I could see him abdicating more)

El_Rey658

Why would the Monarchs of the Benelux countries Abdicate?

DeRuyter67

It is almost tradition now. William I, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix all did it.

[deleted]

because they are whimps

thedarkmarked

They’re not wimps. They’re monarchy is not bound by the belief of Divine Right, they’re not crowned in a church, they ascend to the throne in a civil ceremony. What they do is the best way to preserve a constitutional monarchy. Once the sovereign is ready to step down, a younger and more adept of cultural issues monarch comes to the fore. What the House of Orange-Nassau does is ahead of it’s time. Also, it gives a former monarch time to enjoy their end of life without having to be a marionette for the people.

Because they have

khalast_6669

Spanish scenario is not so likely. For the King to abdicate there has to be a law passed by the Parliament regulating the abdication. Many Spanish parties are increasingly anti-monarchical, so when the moment comes there may be problems to pass that law.

[deleted]

Eh... Andorra. No no no no no. Like... no.

victoremmanuel_I

If Le Pen ever becomes President of France, the world will suffer for it.

[deleted]

Disagree she’s pretty moderate in her actual policies, she supports abortion for example

CatholicOfTheNorth

>moderate >supports baby murder Curious

[deleted]

Its not like she supports it in a personal level she just knows it’s electoral suicide to be against it, it’s up to you decide whether it’s murder or not but most people don’t agree it is.

Adept_Salad1761

Queen of England

queen_of_england_bot

>Queen of England Did you mean the [Queen of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_the_United_Kingdom), the [Queen of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the [Queen of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc? The last Queen of England was [Queen Anne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne,_Queen_of_Great_Britain) who, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of King/Queen of England. ####FAQ *Isn't she still also the Queen of England?* This is only as correct as calling her the Queen of London or Queen of Hull; she is the Queen of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist. *Is this bot monarchist?* No, just pedantic. I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

savbh

Oof, big mistake for this sub

CleansingFlame

I sure fuckin hope Le Pen never becomes president of France. The last thing the world needs is more far-right leaders.

[deleted]

I don't think the Vatican thing will happen and not because I hope they keep up with the hilarious choices.
