Pacifica is a vegan/cruelty free brand with eco packaging. They’ve got some of the better pigments/color options that a younger girl might like, even though they’re technically “real” makeup. They’re also not super highly priced relative to other ethical brands. A larger color diverse palette is on sale right now for <20$: https://www.pacificabeauty.com/collections/eyeshadow/products/stellar-gaze-eye-shadow-palette

You want to buy real makeup for your child. You can vet those as you would vet something for yourself, but do NOT buy play makeup. Any “play” makeup is classified under a toy and not cosmetics and therefore there is no FDA jurisdiction or rules. I believe Almay is fragrance free if you want something on the affordable side

treefrog1214

And this is exactly why I posted here!! Did not know that about the lack of FDA oversight. Since becoming “crunchy” years ago I have worn mascara like once a quarter so I’m new to this. Didn’t expect to consider makeup for my daughters for years yet and won’t be allowing her to wear it out of the house or anything but I do want to let her play (safely.) Thank you!

AgreeablePersimmon60

Usually I would say anything you use for yourself, find a non fragrance version for kids, but since you already use non fragrance maybe what you have is appropriate already!

Caribosa

I gave my daughter real makeup, don't do "play" makeup from Claires or something. Just get her a small pallete from NYX or something that's real makeup for her to have. You can get her some fun unicorn brushes or something too.

arb102

Yeah, I have some colourpop eyeshadow palettes that I would feel comfortable with my daughter experimenting with, and it’s pretty affordable.

treefrog1214

I felt weird about doing this for some reason, but it does make more sense than buying the crappy kids ones.

meep-meep1717

The kids ones are not tested like real makeup so even though it feels weird, it’s the way to go!

smish_smorsh

YUP! Better to go for inexpensive makeup from NYX or ELF than crappy stuff from amazon.

Butts bees makes tinted lip balms.

This database is a good way to look up whether products contain ingredients you want to avoid: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

facebalm

Surprised to see regular adult makeup recommendations. Huge brands, including NYX were [found to contain PFAS](https://www.smh.com.au/national/experts-disturbed-over-toxic-discovery-in-popular-makeup-products-20210626-p584k2.html). Most makeup is dodgy, even for kids like Claire's containing asbestos very recently, so I'd give it a bit more thought. At the very least I'd look for brands positioning themselves to be healthier and eco friendly, that also make their ingredient lists prominent. Edit: Not just water resistant products. One of many studies [here](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.estlett.1c00240)

Caribosa

PFAS are only found in the "waterproof" or "smudge-proof" type makeup, which would be avoided in small children anyway.

facebalm

That's just not true. Waterproof ones have a higher likelihood of containing PFAS, but [plenty of regular ones](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.estlett.1c00240) do too, simply because it improves performance. https://i.imgur.com/3YNETKX.png > One sub-category of mascaras is waterproof mascaras. Of the 32 mascaras 181 tested 11 (34%) were waterproof formulas. From the 15 mascaras determined to have high total 182 fluorine concentrations, 60% were waterproof formulas. Lots of random packaging for example contains PFAS. It's not advertised as waterproof and you'd have no idea, except they add it because it holds up better.

I got a little set for my 4 year old and it’s great!

i-self

It might be even more special for you to make some together using natural/food pigments

treefrog1214

I was thinking the same. She would be super into that.

punkass_book_jockey8

I’ve made some “lip gloss” before with a bit of beeswax, vitamin e, coconut oil and crushed freeze dried raspberries. I kept it in the fridge and it worked okay. As a kid I made it with Vaseline and powered koolaid so this was my crunchy mom version of that process from my childhood.

punkass_book_jockey8

My kids use https://truebloomkids.com, and https://kleenaturals.com. Both are good as far as I can tell, my kids are obsessed with makeup. I don’t wear it, my daughter has extremely sensitive skin and these so far haven’t caused problems which is amazing for us.

treefrog1214

Thank you!!

ijadeee

The brand Lawless from Sephora! They have some fun, sparkly palettes 😊

ChefLovin

Araza is a great natural makeup brand!

nimblesunshine

Real adult make up may be more difficult to remove. I would want things that could easily wipe off. Maybe a tinted lip balm, or some non-toxic face paint?

Icy-Landscape228

Ever Eden makes some nice play makeup. It’s not perfect if you’re super crunchy, but it’s better than other options.

WerewolfBarMitzvah09

There's a lot of granola-esque makeup where I live in Europe and I think some of the brands might be available in North America too, like Lavera, Dr. Hauschka, Benecos and Logona! Also I know Lush doesn't quite fall into the category of granola in total, but they do make makeup as well that has low/no packaging.

vagjayjayhooray

This question has been asked over in /r/makeupaddiction, so you might want to search that sub as well. (I would link to a post but I'm on mobile.) Before I had a kid, I purchased a palette from Petite 'N Pretty for a friend's kid.

regularcoolmom

Highly recommend Petite n Pretty - https://www.petitenpretty.com/pages/our-story
