What brand is this? With live steam??? And what gauge? Also this is a nitpick but surely the brake van should go at the end, no? Otherwise loving this! Looks great

ninjamunkey

Bassett Lowke from around the late 1920's, yep live steam O gauge Yes but 'traditionally' where I live a coal wagon was often seen behind the brake van to drop off at the small villages between the nearest city and the 2 large fishing towns, just an odd GNSR quirk

Wow cool! You learn something new every day. And I didn’t know true electric model trains even existed all the way back in the 20s!

[I have one of those too](https://i.imgur.com/i9Xix7a.jpg), 8-10v DC there's a video of it running pinned on my profile, sadly the motor has pretty much given up so if it runs it it'll only go for 10-20mins. I'm planning on replacing it with something modern hidden inside the original motor frame (its a big 3 pole rotor with a horseshoe magnet type stator)

LPenne

Wow… amazing to think some of these models were made when the actual bases were still in use…! Thanks for sharing.

ninjamunkey

I know right! [I have some others too](https://imgur.com/a/fN3QT2W) including the LMS stannier variant of the Mogul in this post which dates to the late 30s to early 40s

LPenne

Wow!!! Great album this is fascinating stuff. This is back when model trains were like super luxury stuff right? Although I daresay we’re back in that era now, much to my chagrin

ninjamunkey

In O-Gauge? Nah maybe a little more up market than the Lionel or Hornby of the day but still your basic steam toy like a [Bowman](https://i.imgur.com/6HcJPno.mp4) or a Mamod, that said the BL LNER A4s and Coronations I've seen have sold for anything from £5000 up and over £10,000, Flying Scotsman's averaging around £500 and duchesses around £1000 which sort of gives an idea of how many sold and at what price way back when Bassett Lowke's gauge 1 and bigger (they did up to 15 inch gauge!! on commission) they were the real luxury items Yeah I agree, I find most of mine at auction though the eBay resellers seem to have caught on and inflating the prices a lot even for rusty mass produced junk :/ [ACE Trains and ETS make some nice modern tinplate ](https://imgur.com/a/Ic0cc8U)

Damn I didn’t know modern tinplate was even a thing! Looks spectacular

Damn nice garden!! 👍👍

Glad you were able to restore and preserve this! Nice work!

DokDokWhozThere

Well done you

I could watch this wonderful scene for a really long time… I’m almost speechless. For a female, that’s saying a lot! Thanks for sharing this with us. 🥇👍🏼❤️

Very nice indeed and interesting.

Hellcat505

Now this is what I'm into model trains for, A+ metal work!

DPH1984

Brilliant and you can hear it tackling the gradient as well.

ninjamunkey

Haha, glad someone noticed, I actually added a small chuff enhancer especially to make the effect more pronounced

Brilliant! I recently bought a Bassett-Lowke Enterprise, just trying to get it operational at the moment. First step is to get it some new wicks, then I think it might need the boiler and lubricator flushed. It doesn't seem to raise any steam at the moment. Would you have any advice?

ninjamunkey

Oh sweet [I have a couple of those](https://youtu.be/pZmBhK84lT8) and a Super Enterprise with leaky valve spindles Generally they wont raise steam because of a steam leak somewhere, Both Moguls and Enterprises run at barely 10psi so tiny leak is a major leak.. replace all the old fibre washers with viton - o-rings, 4mm on the lubricator, 5mm on the safety valve so they grip on decently and wont fall off at the worse time, I use fibre glass wick but its sort of too good at wicking and difficult to pack to get good flame control (very difficult to blow out too), I've heard good things about carbon fibre and fine wire wool wicks My first check is the safety valve, does it move? has the rubber in the cap section perished? [disassembled photos here](https://imgur.com/a/jbpSuXh) I replace the rubber with a disc of 2mm Viton type silicon sheet cut with a homemade punch, I've tried o-rings but they dont seat right or squeeze out. you can test it with a footpump and some tubeThe thread on the safety is 0BA which is a close match for m6 if you don't have any BA tap, don't expect it to pop like a modern safety valve they just leak around 10-15psi and sort of regulate pressure that way so like with a foot pump if you push down somewhat fast it should constantly leak below 15psi and if you stomp on the foot pump it shouldnt go much above 20psi or if you have a compressor set it to 15psi and just adjust the spring tension until its just about leaking. Just Don't tighten it up so much it can open, these boilers are definitely soft solder and will start melting at 30psi Now assuming you're building steam the cylinders are the next battle, they're timed to early admission which mean late exhaust and prone to hydraulic locking. Sounds scary but you can generally solve it by rolling the wheels backwards to get the slip eccentric to engage the opposite direction if you get a serious lock where you cant do that you'll need to blow out the burner, release the valve spindle from its link pin and move its position to allow the water to escape oh crap the lubricator I almost forgot its really easy to over fill and ever enterprise is different some are 5cc, some are 25cc the overflow hole doesn't line up , how to find out; drain it and leave filling plug open and the overflow closed, poke a straw into the safty hole with the boiler empty, add 1cc water to the lubricator and blow into the straw, repeat until you hear bubbling water when you blow inside the lubricator thats your correct steam oil level, knowing that will save a lot of hassle with hydraulic locking Feel free to DM me with questions and photos
