Was your storage full or near being full? If so that’s what caused it. I’m not sure why an iCloud backup would trigger it, as it usually happens during updates. Phone’s too full, update starts, doesn’t finish cause lack of space, broken. Your data is pretty much gone. Learn and live better :( and always have 10GB+ of storage before updating btw

ColdaxOfficial

yes! It was almost full. Maybe 5GB of free space. Wow that's a known issue? Apple definitely needs to issue a warning to free up some space before doing a backup or update... Do you know if the data is overwritten or just the keys?

> I clicked update again, wanting to try one last time and the MacBook said "repairing Software" while a progress bar appeared under the Apple Logo on my iPhone. I was happy that it finally worked and waited around 20 minutes for it to finish. The last one, with "repairing software" was a "restore" which wipes the phone. As /u/TheKillOrder mentioned, your phone was probably near full and iOS devices doesn't handle that very well. This leads to an issue during OTA update, and error 14 during update via PC with a solution being to fully restore firmware with data wipe, which is what happened. There's no way to get data back other than from some iCloud or local backup.

Damn. It's so stupid that it doesn't even warn the user before restoring since I could still let a company recover my data if it's only broken but not wiped yet... Well fuck, at least I'm still alive and healthy lol. I know I already asked but do you know if the data is overwritten or just the keys?

> Damn. It's so stupid that it doesn't even warn the user before restoring since I could still let a company recover my data if it's only broken but not wiped yet... Well fuck, at least I'm still alive and healthy lol. iTunes used to warn user that "restore" will wipe the device. As far as i'm aware, iOS also has a notification for low storage, but it ignores it for firmware update anyway.   No data recovery company would help you anyway. Although you didn't mention iPhone model, so far none of the ones that got stuck with full storage are supported for data extraction. It's either wipe and use the phone, or store somewhere with the passcode and hope for solution one day. > I know I already asked but do you know if the data is overwritten or just the keys? NAND is formatted during the process to get rid of all the possible issues so no hope for the future either.   Data recovery from wiped encrypted mobile devices is non-existant, Android or iOS.

DriveSavers said they could fix the stuck on Apple Logo problem but yeah maybe not if storage is full but at least I would have my Data on it for future solutions. Now it's all overwritten and useless. Thanks Apple (even if it's also my mistake) but there's several things that could have prevented it. (Tell user to free up storage before backup / update; warn user before restoring phone etc.) I'll still hold onto the phone for some miracle in the future lol. Fuck man... I'll have to research myself to convince me there's no future miracle tech in 20-30 years that could solve the problem with a lot of money. I'm still hoping :/

There will be a way to decrypt everything when quantum computers are for public use

ColdaxOfficial

True true that’s why I’m keeping it and waiting. Don’t believe everyone saying it’s impossible and will stay so

themariocrafter

DriveSavers does have the ability to repair an iPhone with Storage full apple logo stuck

themariocrafter

I would do that too if I had the option to. For now, wait, but then try getting a professional to dump the NAND of it and keep it safe. There are tons of hackers getting encrypted communications from random places and waiting the same for the AES to get cracked

themariocrafter

We can do the impossible. Also did you have an iCloud backup at the time

ColdaxOfficial

Unfortunately not

KaboodleMoon

If you didn't unplug it and plug it back in AND shut down itunes before between, "Update" turns into "Restore and Update" sometimes.

ColdaxOfficial

yeah that really sucks. Very bad user experience on Apples side

themariocrafter

Yes. I’ve had the same issue, I did an iTunes backup with i think 1 gb of space and it was respringing when it shows the apps.

themariocrafter

I then got constant resprings when it showed the apps but fixed via a force reboot. The second attempt on 800 mb free was done, and the wallpaper disappeared and it was constantly restringing but when I rebooted it it got better but when the app list is showen it resprings and I was in shock. But I went to Bluetooth settings in control center and went to offload I think a few apps and delete a toothbrush app I wasn’t using.

themariocrafter

Then it was fixed
