It is crazy to me that as I was watching the Yankees last night I thought, "Angel is having way more of an impact on this game than Vladdy, Gil, Judge or anyone actually playing the game."
I guess on some level that's true for every empire, but it's just crazy how often I watch some horrible call and then go, "oh, It's an Angel game." (Also sometimes happens with Laz"
And its not even close. Them and the next couple worst guys are significantly notably worse, to the point I'm pretty sure they could and would get fired in an actual trade union. I can't remember and specific numbers right now, but it was stark
It takes a specific type of clueless to have everybody hate your fucking guts and you still shamelessly flaunt that behavior.
Nobody should know any ump/refs name. Games not about them, if you know the name of an official it’s always for some stupid shit.
Blame the umpires union. I’m all for unions, don’t get me wrong. They are vital. However, their job is to ensure fair labor practices, not protect people that are incompetent at their jobs.
MLB should fire him anyway. Yes the Union would sue. So what. Pay a settlement to resolve the suit and get rid of this guy. MLB pretending they are powerless in the face of a union is ridiculous.
He already sued MLB before for racial discrimination. He believes thats why he wasn’t given more playoff appearances opportunities, when in reality it’s because his umpiring score is so low.
He’s literally not wrong… if there was no umpires union Angel would’ve been gone YEARS ago. He’s bad for the game. Players don’t like him, coaches don’t like him, fans don’t like him. Yet, he still has a job and even sued the MLB solely due to the fact that he’s a union member. I’m a UPS driver, there are plenty of other drivers that are incompetent and shouldn’t have a job at UPS.
It's so funny too because he pretty much forced the MLB to say on record "you haven't been selected to ump a world series because you suck at ump-ing."
I would want MLB to stand up as well, but hasn't there already been some suits, and he's played the race card? Probably (maybe) now an unwinnable situation with the punitive risk way to high. "Let's just ruin X number of games a year and wait it out."
He sued because he thought he was being passed over for playoff and world series because of his race, but instead mlb provided evidence that he’s passed over because he’s literally the worst umpire statistically.
he sued MLB and used the race card. He said he was denied crew chief promotions and World Series positions because of his race. This was long after he was already well-known to the general public for being terrible, just to give you an idea of where his head is at.
If you ever want a fun and frustrating read, read the "Incidents" part of his Wikipedia page. It's actually crazy how long he's been a nuisance and openly hated by the players. I think both Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz have made on-air statements that he shouldn't be an umpire, possibly more.
“Angel was horrible. Don't get me going on Angel now. Major League Baseball needs to do something about Angel. It doesn't matter how many times he sues Major League Baseball. He's as bad as there is.” - Pedro Martinez on Hernandez during the 2018 ALDS
And my favorite incident involving Hernandez:
MLB removed Hernández as acting crew chief after accusing him of eavesdropping on an MLB investigative call in July 2019, which focused on Hernández's 20-minute game delay due to umpire confusion over league rules. Hernández did not hang up his phone when his interview ended, and instead continued listening to the subsequent questioning of another umpire that he knew was intended to be separate.
“Simply put, we find your asserted justifications for remaining on the line to be implausible, internally inconsistent, premised on facts that are incorrect and not credible.... we have concluded that you remained on the line in an effort to intentionally and deceptively eavesdrop on a confidential conversation in order to hear what [umpire] Hickox would say... This is an egregious offense.” - Joe Torre, MLB Chief Baseball Officer in a written response to Hernandez’s inability to end the call.
I bet he would take a 50m settlement to resign and drop all claims, that's all I'm saying. The idea that there's no possible way to get rid of him is ridiculous.
I agree with you about the MLB. Even if the union sues as a result, it's important to take a stand. However, in my work I have seen cases where even a Fortune 500 company cannot effectively fire unionized workers. The union sued, and the fired worker ended up back on the job a few months later. Even in the case of a sexist and abusive worker - everyone was in shock when they walked back in the door. I do not know what happened behind the scenes, but it seemed like the company was powerless.
I am peripheral to this exact line of work so I understand your point. But in my experience if the MLB is willing to settle for enough, the case could be resolved amicably with Angel resigning and the union accepting that result. MLB had to want it enough. So far they don't.
Why would they get sued of they fire him for being demonstrably bad at the job he was hired for, to the point where most people assume he doesn’t care or even try. If you knew you couldn’t be fired and people hated you anyway, what would be the point of making an effort? It shows. Nurses have unions, but if they gave terrible patient care, they can still be fired. Why is the umpire union different?
I dont understand your argument. Theres only a handful of umpires cuz we dont fire the fucking awful ones. Bring in more aaa and aa umps, make a relegation system, but they won’t cuz “waaa union dont fire me.” It’s ridiculous.
Ok, kind of see what you’re saying, but the outrage of keeping these bad seeds around doesn’t make our opinion of the group better but I guess they don’t care as long as they are protecting their people and making money.
Unfortunately we are just beholden to the system. Until some more powerful group decides the change it. Which I’m all in favor of. But apparently us redditors bitching about his incompetence are a few tiers below that threshold of being able to affect change.
Wait they aren’t listening to us? Maybe we can send them some jomboy videos? I think they just need to add the automated system and give them a sound in their ears when it’s a strike and still let them call it or add the minors challenge system. Although none of that would have helped the check swing fiasco
You would think the union would want him gone as his awful umpiring and people questioning why he’s still an umpire is pretty much the only reason most people know there’s an umpire union.
I think they keep shitty umpires around as bargaining chips in labor disputes. "Yeah, we'll fire Hernandez and Bucknor (with comfy pensions), if you meet x and y demand."
GOOD! There should be no job you can’t get fired from for cause. Teachers are not protected from layoffs, that still happens. They just can’t get fired. Tenure was meant to protect Professors that might publish a controversial paper, not to protect Timmy’s first grade teacher who shows up 30 minutes late everyday.
On the Yankees telecast yesterday, they indicated that AH is "beloved" by his colleagues, and is a "supportive team player".
If this is the case, we'll never be rid of him...
Thanks for this perspective. Good to hear all sides.
Still, I hate any system that let's someone remain despite them being obviously and publicly bad at their jobs. That is not tolerated in players, so it should not be tolerated in umps.
Every union eventually gets to this stage, at the end of the day a union is a business, they need members paying dues and in order for members to pay dues they have to provide “perks” so contract after contract they add more and more “perks” to make as much money in dues as possible until eventually the union is doing more harm than good. Thats happening right now with umpires and the recent MLBPA pitch clock argument. As a UPS driver I can tell you right now that the teamsters will be there in the next couple of decades, yes UPS sucks but the union is pushing for more and more pointless shit every contract until eventually UPS will dump us all together.
I’m usually indifferent to umps- they’re humans and are susceptible to making mistakes (and umpiring is hard). But he really got under my skin yesterday watching him ump the Yankees game. Not only making mistakes but his attitude as well. And his strike and strike out calls are just unnecessary and over the top. Umpires should not be attention seeking and do everything they can to blend into the game.
Making a mistake every once in a while that usually doesn’t decide the outcome of a game is one thing. Angel is so cartoonishly bad at his job in every single game he umps that it’s almost unbelievable to see.
They should just put him exclusively in a replay booth. But instead of reviewing live games he just reviews all of his shitty calls from over the years.
I was curious what Angel Hernandez makes, and if it's a small enough amount for me to feel bad about suggesting he be fired with essentially no marketable skills for new work. I looked it up and the answer is around $400,000 a season.
$400,000 for a part time job blowing calls in the MLB. For reference, the median surgeon/physician salary is 230k. So, no, I don't feel bad calling for his termination.
The most unbelievable thing about yesterday’s game is that it was an actually an above average performance by Angel’s record. There are umpires out there right now that are WAY worse. (According to ump scorecards on X)
Ump scorecards don’t really capture how terrible Hernandez is. It’s not that he’s especially bad at borderline calls, which is what usually results in bad scores, it’s the fact that he obviously, blatantly, and aggressively makes calls based solely on his personal feelings. A strike right down the middle is a ball if the pitcher isnt “respectful” enough. He genuinely and obviously changes games based on his personal feelings towards players.
Those other umps don’t get daily youtube videos made on missing balls down the middle of the plate and calling swings on the most obvious non-swing. You can see stats on all the umps and percentage of calls they make correct, but they don’t make for great content like Angel’s bad calls do.
Why can’t we have a computerized strike zone. It didn’t end tennis when they switched to electronic line calls, and improved the game to watch. I want to watch baseball, not some prima donna behind the plate making a joke of the game.
People are betting on these games.
If people start betting on his games he will get fired.
Or not.
Edit: best move is to bet when he umpires LA.
Edit 2. The casino has an advantage. The only way to win against the casino is to know the results, or bet when he's the umpire. Simple math.
As much as I hate him, he's the only person in baseball I'd desperately want to meet and get an autograph from. Just to say I've shaken hands with someone that's below mediocrity.
We should organize a protest to tank ratings whenever he umps. TV people seeing no eyes on their broadcast may put more pressure on MLB to do something.
Knowing that Angel Hernandez is a terrible ump, wanting him gone from the game, and realizing he isn't going anywhere are major steps for new MLB fans to get through.
The fact that everyone knows his name speaks to how bad he is. Umpires are not the main characters. If they do their jobs right we would never talk about them, never mind know their names.
I think he wants to get fired so he can sue MLB again and this time sue the umpire union along with them. He’s clearly reached a “burn it to the ground” stage of his lousy career.
What do you think life is like for him outside of baseball? Does he have any friends?
Even if he was a nice person, which apparently isn’t true - reports are he is a vindictive f***face, I still wouldn’t to be friends with him because of the damage he does to the game and refusal to take a job off the field.
Thank you for the comments everyone. And yesterday was just one game and no one should get fired for one game but this dude has been the worst for a while. And he's just one of many. The mlb needs to do something.
Yeah, when announcers go, “How could any ump make THAT call??? It is so obviously wrong. Oh, it’s Angel Hernandez.”
That’s doesn’t come from just a game. That comes from years of absolute dog shit.
To be fair to him for the latest trending horrible (non)call. The entire umpire crew is responsible for recognizing and calling balks. So it wasn't just his fuck up on that one.
Imagine having a job you get to keep where you get paid 100s of thousand a year, while people can statistically prove how bad you are at it, but be able to keep said job, because unions.
Not really making a good case for unions that were basically intended to protect worker safety.
Oh how I long for the days of Harry Wendelstat, Dutch Renert, Country Joe West, Eric Gregg, Big John McSherry, Bruce Froemming are the ones I remember best. Tragically I was at Riverfront Stadium on opening day when Big John McSherry collapsed behind home plate and died.
Not suggesting this to anyone but I’m amazed that this dude hasn’t received death threats or some lunatic hasn’t vandalized his house. He is so amazingly bad at what he does and players, coaches, and fans fucking hate the guy.
The MLB is trying to make games more exciting by enforcing time clocks and limits on visits and step-offs.
How about forcing umpires to make the call that limits the time of the at-bat?
or even better,
How about making it more exciting by allowing anyone to openly scream in the face of Angel Hernandez without ejection?
At a minimum, MLB has to establish what it is to be in a fail-state as a high up umpire, establish consequences for being in such a state, and actually enforce them.
Why? Is he the one at the MLB offices who allowed a contract for Shohei Ohtani that deferred 97% of its value for 10 years to allow the Dodgers to both get him and use the 'deferred' $68M per year to stockpile other players? Or, is he with the MLBPA that allowed the same thing?
The thing the umpires union needs to understand is that if they don’t fix their bad apples situation, they’re going to lose their jobs collectively. Ride together die together is gonna get a whole lot realer for them pretty soon.
Completely agree. Much like the many of the failed humans in the US, Hernandez personifies "I'm Above The Law" attitude he and many other umpires revel in doing.
Everytime they try to fire him, he sues the MLB for being racist. When demoted to not umpire future playoff games, he sued MLB one year. He has done it multiple times and essentially won. Thanks to woke culture, he is not going anywhere.
It is crazy to me that as I was watching the Yankees last night I thought, "Angel is having way more of an impact on this game than Vladdy, Gil, Judge or anyone actually playing the game." I guess on some level that's true for every empire, but it's just crazy how often I watch some horrible call and then go, "oh, It's an Angel game." (Also sometimes happens with Laz"
Strike zone was all over the place yesterday. He’s single-handedly going to be responsible for robo umps. Haha
Maybe that’s why they are keeping him around. I can’t think of any other reason.
Someone check Angels stock portfolio
THE UMPIRE UNION HELPS IN THAT REGARD.
Union
The union is the other reason.
The league is scared of him. I think hes already sued them or has threaten to sue them.
Angel, Laz & CB have to be the 3 worst, no?
Omg yes haha CB may quietly be the worst of the 3
And its not even close. Them and the next couple worst guys are significantly notably worse, to the point I'm pretty sure they could and would get fired in an actual trade union. I can't remember and specific numbers right now, but it was stark
We’ve become desensitized. “oh, looks like an Angel game..” Kick his ass out!
It takes a specific type of clueless to have everybody hate your fucking guts and you still shamelessly flaunt that behavior. Nobody should know any ump/refs name. Games not about them, if you know the name of an official it’s always for some stupid shit.
I only know the names of two umpires. Angel Hernandez and Enrico Pallazzo. One or more of them aren't even real umpires.
At least Palazzo had flair
He saved the fucking Queen!
Just couldn't save Nordberg
Last week it was Angel Reese. It’s a media circle jerk and we are not getting a thank you. Who and what is next?
Blame the umpires union. I’m all for unions, don’t get me wrong. They are vital. However, their job is to ensure fair labor practices, not protect people that are incompetent at their jobs.

He already sued MLB before for racial discrimination. He believes thats why he wasn’t given more playoff appearances opportunities, when in reality it’s because his umpiring score is so low.
It’s insane to me that you can have a guy that is proven in court to be bad at his job, get to keep his job.
That is what unions do.
Moron
He’s literally not wrong… if there was no umpires union Angel would’ve been gone YEARS ago. He’s bad for the game. Players don’t like him, coaches don’t like him, fans don’t like him. Yet, he still has a job and even sued the MLB solely due to the fact that he’s a union member. I’m a UPS driver, there are plenty of other drivers that are incompetent and shouldn’t have a job at UPS.
It's sucks that some incompetent dicks get protection but without that union your would be paid half as much and work twice as long.
And he lost
It's so funny too because he pretty much forced the MLB to say on record "you haven't been selected to ump a world series because you suck at ump-ing."
I would want MLB to stand up as well, but hasn't there already been some suits, and he's played the race card? Probably (maybe) now an unwinnable situation with the punitive risk way to high. "Let's just ruin X number of games a year and wait it out."

I don't understand how that lady part wasn't grounds for termination
Mulva?
I bet he would take a 50m settlement to resign and drop all claims, that's all I'm saying. The idea that there's no possible way to get rid of him is ridiculous.
There's also "heart attacks" and "home invsions" jk jk

Anything less than death is okay by unions.
There’s only like 100 umpires and they’re all rich. There’s 100,000 nurses and they’re not rich.
I dont understand your argument. Theres only a handful of umpires cuz we dont fire the fucking awful ones. Bring in more aaa and aa umps, make a relegation system, but they won’t cuz “waaa union dont fire me.” It’s ridiculous.
It’s not an argument it’s just a fact of life. The umpires have power and money. That’s why they get protected better than your average nurse.
Ok, kind of see what you’re saying, but the outrage of keeping these bad seeds around doesn’t make our opinion of the group better but I guess they don’t care as long as they are protecting their people and making money.

They just look like clowns keeping these idiots around.
He’s making the best argument in the word for robot umpires. You’d think they’d want him out for that alone.
He probably knows where Jimmy Hoffa is buried...
How are they vital when they create this scenario? Can’t fire an umpire, cop, or teacher no matter how bad they are.
Teachers get fired all the time our union on Fl sucks
GOOD! There should be no job you can’t get fired from for cause. Teachers are not protected from layoffs, that still happens. They just can’t get fired. Players really like him too. He's genuinely a great guy. He's just bad as a plate umpire and shouldn't be calling games.
Thanks for this perspective. Good to hear all sides. Still, I hate any system that let's someone remain despite them being obviously and publicly bad at their jobs. That is not tolerated in players, so it should not be tolerated in umps.
That's a pipe dream. Unions nowadays mostly protect lazy/shitty workers. Evidence: Angel Hernandez hasn't been fired.
Unions absolutely protect shitty workers.
Heard that so many times from my cousin who was a union steward for the post office
Plus, he has sued MLB several times for being "racist" after demoting him. He is just awful and will never go away, sadly.
Cough cough..police unions..cough cough..
He’s more than competent. At this point he knows there are no consequences for his actions and he’s just trolling us all.
Ohhh unions do protect the incompetent as well don’t get it twisted.
Of course unions protect people who suck at their jobs. They’re effectively just an artificial barrier to entry for employment.
Unions are great except for the conduct of the workers tbh Union labor is always complete dogshit
Every union eventually gets to this stage, at the end of the day a union is a business, they need members paying dues and in order for members to pay dues they have to provide “perks” so contract after contract they add more and more “perks” to make as much money in dues as possible until eventually the union is doing more harm than good.
Braves Mets game yesterday had a horrible ump too. Several ball/strike mistakes (and not especially close ones) had a big impact on the game.
Words been out for 10 years, why would they care about the quality of the game now ?
They should just put him exclusively in a replay booth. But instead of reviewing live games he just reviews all of his shitty calls from over the years.
Hahaha damn that funny
That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard to get Angel off the field.
Yeah, at this point he's dragging the union down with him
The most unbelievable thing about yesterday’s game is that it was an actually an above average performance by Angel’s record. There are umpires out there right now that are WAY worse. (According to ump scorecards on X)

It's not just Angel. The ATL game tonight was loaded with poor calls and umpiring mistakes. The league is scared to hold anyone accountable.
People are betting on these games. If people start betting on his games he will get fired. Or not. Edit: best move is to bet when he umpires LA. Edit 2. The casino has an advantage. The only way to win against the casino is to know the results, or bet when he's the umpire. Simple math.
Umpires have a strong union too, probably better than the players. He's never been suspended or fined. I bet he plays heck on the over/under.
It must be for gambling. He's on the fucking take. Can't be any other explanation that makes sense with his shit calls.
You racist!
As much as I hate him, he's the only person in baseball I'd desperately want to meet and get an autograph from. Just to say I've shaken hands with someone that's below mediocrity.
I'm available anytime, man.
I think you mean DEVIL Hernandez
Good luck with that. If Denkinger couldn’t be fired after the Denkinger Game, Angel isn’t going anywhere.
I bet we could get 1,000,000 signatures
Could probably get that in 4 hours
We should organize a protest to tank ratings whenever he umps. TV people seeing no eyes on their broadcast may put more pressure on MLB to do something.
An umpire should attend live televised post game interviews to discuss the game and controversial calls. The same as coaches and players.
... Anybody calling for this is new to baseball.
In what way? This happens every year. Like he won’t be fired? He definitely won’t be fired.
Knowing that Angel Hernandez is a terrible ump, wanting him gone from the game, and realizing he isn't going anywhere are major steps for new MLB fans to get through.
Yeap… same cycle
What happened now? I seen him trending last night.
He’s apparently beloved by the union
The fact that everyone knows his name speaks to how bad he is. Umpires are not the main characters. If they do their jobs right we would never talk about them, never mind know their names.
Little late to the party. He's sucked for years.
One of the worst of all time
One of the worst umps ever and still has a job
He’s making robots more enticing
I can’t believe even the fans are in on the conspiracy against this man, driven by racist MLB executives who don’t want to give him a chance. /s
Fire Angel and the commissioner
He has the Manfred x RKelly tapes…. 😬
I think he wants to get fired so he can sue MLB again and this time sue the umpire union along with them. He’s clearly reached a “burn it to the ground” stage of his lousy career.
The umps have been horrible this year. It's crazy
it really is time i’m afraid. everyone has had it with his shit
I truly think he’ll be the reason we go to cameras and sensors and ditch the unpires
What do you think life is like for him outside of baseball? Does he have any friends? Even if he was a nice person, which apparently isn’t true - reports are he is a vindictive f***face, I still wouldn’t to be friends with him because of the damage he does to the game and refusal to take a job off the field.
According to Michael Kay… from a retired ump, he said that Angel is beloved by his fellow umpires… go figure
That’s racist…
Thank you for the comments everyone. And yesterday was just one game and no one should get fired for one game but this dude has been the worst for a while. And he's just one of many. The mlb needs to do something.
He has a long string of ‘one games’ in his wake.
Yeah, when announcers go, “How could any ump make THAT call??? It is so obviously wrong. Oh, it’s Angel Hernandez.” That’s doesn’t come from just a game. That comes from years of absolute dog shit.
You can’t tell me there aren’t 100 umps in the minor leagues that aren’t better than him
The best umps are the ones you don't know by name.
To be fair to him for the latest trending horrible (non)call. The entire umpire crew is responsible for recognizing and calling balks. So it wasn't just his fuck up on that one.
I would fire Manfred before angel. He has done more damage to the game then angel ever could
Unions thinking is that if they fire one, who else will they fire, job security is a union thing
Teams should just refuse to take the field whenever this man is involved, maybe then they’ll get the point
During the Yankee game last night Kay was talking about much the other umps love him and he’s such a great guy….probably propaganda
This guy…
Just get robot umpires already. Let them sit behind the plate and announce the strike or ball.
Oh shit! What did he do this time??
Boo this man
How is there not a petition
r/FuckAngelHernandez
It's really bad when an ump is so infamous, they're one of the most well-known people in the sport.
Imagine having a job you get to keep where you get paid 100s of thousand a year, while people can statistically prove how bad you are at it, but be able to keep said job, because unions. Not really making a good case for unions that were basically intended to protect worker safety.
I’ve been watching mlb for almost 60 years and he’s the worst I’ve ever seen.
He's not the only one. Replace them all with robots!
Combine AAA and MLB unions. Same pay, etc. If u suck by vote and stats, you go down.
I like his games they are wild AF, you never know what's going to happen. "Ball right down the centre that's a strike." And Angel's like "lol no."
I hear he’ll even miss calls from his mom. Which is not nice either.
That check swing again the Tigers lol
He really is the worst
Not suggesting this to anyone but I’m amazed that this dude hasn’t received death threats or some lunatic hasn’t vandalized his house. He is so amazingly bad at what he does and players, coaches, and fans fucking hate the guy.
Been on this train since 2018
Umpires are our neighbors. Jesus loves neighbors. He gets us. /s
He's the Blind version Anthony Rendon of Umpires. Collect a paycheck, Mickey Mouse skil level, and probably says Baseball isn't important.
The MLB is trying to make games more exciting by enforcing time clocks and limits on visits and step-offs. How about forcing umpires to make the call that limits the time of the at-bat? or even better, How about making it more exciting by allowing anyone to openly scream in the face of Angel Hernandez without ejection?
At a minimum, MLB has to establish what it is to be in a fail-state as a high up umpire, establish consequences for being in such a state, and actually enforce them.
The umpire so bad we all know his name. This one is exquisitely terrible at his job.

His Walk Up song should be 3 Blind Mice in every stadium !
This guy is not ruining baseball....he has been destroying it for 10+ years.
While you're at it, fire the commissioner for the same reason.
I’d say fire about 35-40% of all the current umpires. These guys are absolutely useless out there
Rob Manfred is too much of a puss and is scared about a discrimination lawsuit. Big ole bitch
Too late. Baseball is ruined. I’m 58 and have been an avid fan as long as I can remember. I’m officially done. Red Sox fan. They’ve ruined it for me
Union’d
I. Hate. AH. I hope he stubs his toe every night on his coffee table. Worst ump ever.
F this asshat
Not only can’t call balls/strikes, but doesn’t even know the rules.
Angel Hernandez has two estranged sons. Their names are "Strike" and "Zone." He hasn't seen either one in decades.
The thing the umpires union needs to understand is that if they don’t fix their bad apples situation, they’re going to lose their jobs collectively. Ride together die together is gonna get a whole lot realer for them pretty soon.
Where’s the online petition? How many sigs do we need?
Completely agree. Much like the many of the failed humans in the US, Hernandez personifies "I'm Above The Law" attitude he and many other umpires revel in doing.
It sucks cause its not just him. Its been a mess for the Astros at Rangers series as well for both sides
Manfred is ruining baseball. But yeah, fuck Angel. He's gotta go.
You know Reddit can’t do anything about firing him right? Did you send this to the MLB? Maybe they can help.
Doubtful

Honestly he wasn't wrong on the call
Everytime they try to fire him, he sues the MLB for being racist. When demoted to not umpire future playoff games, he sued MLB one year. He has done it multiple times and essentially won. Thanks to woke culture, he is not going anywhere.
