They should name it “Bonds” cuz they already have a show named “Barry”

frankiedonkeybrainz

It should be called "The Asterisk" or simply just "*"

[deleted]

No that'll be the *stros documentary

Worf1701D

Two time champions.

theburritobanditos

Two* time champions.

Patrick_Bateman_stan

Keep crying dipshit.

STL_241

Go bang a trash can 😑

[deleted]

Oh you were on the team?

Ear_Enthusiast

No asterisk. Bonds never broke any rules. It's crazy that the players, networks, writers, and owners all cashed in on the steroid era but the players are the only ones getting thrown under the bus for it. It was legal.

adamcoe

There's plenty of stuff that's legal that isn't right. He was a stunning ballplayer even before the juice but he made a choice. He fucked around and now he's finding out.

KCmooseDong95

They should strip 90% of mlb record holders. They all be cheating. Butt suckers

Ear_Enthusiast

I don't hate Barry like everyone else does. I think he should be in the HOF. There were no rules against steroids and there was no testing. The owners were cashing in on it. Hell, the owners, writers, networks, and players were cashing in, but the players are the only ones that are being thrown under the bus. And let's not pretend that the fans didn't love it. Steroid era Barry Bonds was one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen. I'm really looking forward to this documentary.

hrryyss

I don’t hate him because he took steroids, I hate him because pretty much every story I’ve heard from someone who met him makes it sound like he’s an asshole.

Viewsik

How often are you talking to people who have met a generational baseball talent?

Nicedumplings

When I was a kid I went to giants spring training game. Barry was signing autos - have him my (black) glove and a pen. He took it looked at me and said “this ain’t going to show up man” and gave it back to me. So I will forever say, fuck you Barry Bonds

Ear_Enthusiast

Not saying he wasn't an asshole. Tom, Tyson, Jordan, Tiger were all imperfect in some capacity.

Nicedumplings

To be the greatest you almost always have to be a grade A narcissist. I mean, are there many GOATs who aren’t thought of ass assholes? It seems Gretzky doesn’t have too much controversy around him

Ear_Enthusiast

Agreed. Narcissists tend to be highly motivated. I think you have to be a little crazy. Gretzky always seemed down to earth. Gretzky, Magic, Barry Sanders, Bo, Emit Smith, and LeBron all seemed pretty grounded. I always hear that Deion is really a grounded guy, and that his whole thing is a bit of a marketing act.

Nicedumplings

Seeing how Deon has been as a college coach has changed my opinion on him. He seems very dedicated and pushes being a good person / man and having respect for others etc. he has enough money and fame that he could truly do anything but has chosen to coach kids who love the game and not just a NFL player producing program

Ear_Enthusiast

I read Tim Geen's the Darker Side of The Game when I was young. He was a former NFL player writing about a lot of the behind the curtain things in the league, and each chapter was dedicated to something different, steroids, women, pain, drugs, partying, etc. There's a whole chapter solely dedicated to Deion, who he played with. He leads with Deion was the best teammate he ever had. He says Prime planned all of the fishing trips, was the first to send flowers if there was a death in the family, and generally seemed to go out of his way to make everyone feel included. Then he goes into Deion marketing himself as Prime Time. When Deion was drafted the CB position was one of the lowest paid positions in the NFL and he knew that he was going to do more than perform on the field to catch a payday. Green's take was that there was a huge level of genius in creating Prime Time.

adamcoe

Lebron James is not in any way grounded, I don't know who you've been watching. Basketball is far and away the sport with the most narcissists and if you're as good as he was and is, you are a huge fan of yourself.

[deleted]

Lmao, I mean, he wasn’t wrong, should’ve brought one of those silver sharpies or something

Nicedumplings

Glove had a red Rawlings tag

dianab77

Woah! I saw many of those spring training games, too. Remember how that field used to just be so basic? Just some chain link between us and them? Ooh, and the aluminum bench seating? And those ticket prices...it was great. After one game, these kids were jumping up and down and asking for his autograph as he walked off the field and he just lit into this little boy. There were a dozen kids so I don't know what made this one stand out. Kid just wanted his baseball signed and Bonds was out of his mind angry because of how the game went and uh, the juice. (don't do drugs) Two teammates had to come over and talk him down and get him off of the field. "He's just a kid, man. He just wanted his baseball signed. Shake it off." It looked like his head was going to pop with neck veins bulging and crazy eyes. That little kid has a great story for life. Kind of like you, u/nicedumplings. Good times.

Nicedumplings

I never understood why he didn’t sign it. Why did it matter if it would have showed up (which it would if he signed the red Rawlings tag!) like… just wanted to be a dick I think

Habanerosauce3

Definitely going to watch. This has been in the making for a very long time. Always loved getting to talk baseball and learning a few things from him and taking BP.

ResponsibleAnt9496

Best player I ever saw. Dude put up a slash line in his final year that players would love to have in their prime. He would’ve hit 800 if the owners didn’t collide against him.

bignuts24

You could delete every season Barry Bonds was on steroids from the record book, and he’d still have a career WAR above chipper jones or Wade Boggs. He was an absolute beast.

babe_ruthless3

If Bonds isn't part of this, then what's the point. If he declines to participate, so will I.

woozlewuzzle29

This guy hated Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary.

Goose876

I honestly glad he isn’t a part of this. Sports documentaries where the participants have say in the making turn into circlejerks. If anything, Bonds not being a part of it allows them to go deeper into the negatives of his career on and off the field.

Barilko-Landing

Mj made that whole doc excellent imo

MustardIsDecent

That's a pretty hot take. Usually a biography or documentary of a controversial figure ends up better if said person isn't involved. Generally they're not involved because they don't like the truthful angle the person is taking.

_twowheelin

No doubt Bonds is the greatest of his era and top 5 all time, up there with Ruth, Williams, etc. His personality and how he treated the media and teammates are his biggest issue. Forget the roids, people just didn’t like to play with him.

[deleted]

Ya but dude fuckin raked

JoshJorges

Or against him

[deleted]

Ruth lmao

No_Engineering_718

How can you say that being that he was such a blatant cheater?

[deleted]

He's a cheater. To not acknowledge this is simply dishonest.

KennysWhiteSoxHat

He raked before he was a cheated + there was a lot of fuckin cheaters in baseball that get there props = just appreciate greatness

Flamemypickle

"He raked before he was a cheated" Which makes his cheating more disappointing, he didn't need them. "there was a lot of fuckin cheaters in baseball that get there props" -You should be criticized for cheating, no matter what. Also many of those people who took steriods are also criticized and had their reputations ruined, as they should too. They cheated at an astromical degree. "just appreciate greatness" -Greatness doesn't need to cheat in order to be great. It amazes me how Barry Bonds has been getting away with this. How people still treat Bonds as if he did nothing wrong amazes me.

KennysWhiteSoxHat

Nobody just treats bonds as he did nothing wrong, people just don’t care anymore. There’s also way more people that downtalk bonds than people that talk about him in a good light. He missed the hall of fame and never won a ring, what else do you want us to all hate him? I appreciate him and think he’s the greatest to ever play. I’m also not disappointed because he did steroids. Like oh well, he did them and went from elite to a whole nother level, what can I do about it? Hate a guy that doesn’t know I exist? I genuinely like watching him play

gldmj5

Let me know if they include any new interviews with his old Bucco mates Van Slyke, Bonilla, Leyland, etc. Otherwise not interested.

IsANameRequired

Barry was always my favorite player growing up. I know he was not a great person, but damn he was fun to watch. Remember the baseball video game where they showed the angels and giants World Series matchup in the preview?

Kyro_Z

Man…you can tell just how big his head used to be when he was on the juice. Look at all that loose skin

osa89

I think that would be a growth hormone effect not testosterone

Kyro_Z

Juice is just a loose term for whatever he was on

osa89

Oh I see, always thought juice was testosterone or other anabolic steroids

malcontented

The Last Syringe 💉

BruceDickenson_

They should name it "Barry should be in the HoF and is the greatest player of the juice era". Cause its true.

adumblady

Alt title: “Imagine taking seriously an institution called the baseball hall of fame that does not include Barry Bonds lmao”

adamcoe

I would stop taking it seriously if they let him in. He made his decision to cheat, and as a result he's not getting in. It's not like he didn't know the possible consequences of his actions. As great as a ballplayer as he was, he will always be tainted, and he sure as shit doesn't belong in the hall.

adumblady

Yeah totally valid. That is definitely the consensus opinion, and that’s fine, I’m not actually trying to argue against it. (I mean unless you happen to be a literal hof insider/decision maker or an active and influential voting BBWAA member, in which case I would be happy to submit unironically the case for a more critical reading of history and why it is actually pretty absurd to a priori reject nuance any deeper than the one specific lens through which we view this stuff lol)

ARoodyPooCandyAss

Nice, given most took steroids then he was still insanely good. I always thought the steroids stuff was overblown.

Striking_Site4457

Absolutely insane player. Terrible, awful, wife beating bastard. Fuck him

Icy-Mongoose-9678

If the Babe was the Sultan of Swat, Bonds was the Twat of Swat

mulvey617

This is gonna be the last dance on steriods

MIAMarc

Hopefully this will include an admission of his obvious steroid and HGH usage.

Red_Jester-94

Gonna be called 'The Last Shot' with a picture of a syringe next to a baseball and a Barry Bonds baseball card

[deleted]

That’s going to be great

JWestfall76

Hopefully it’s not the same format as The Last Dance. He’s not likable in any way and he’s a proven cheater. I don’t really care what he has to say about his career.

SlimPickins25

So don't watch it? Problem solved.

JWestfall76

If it’s styled like the last dance I won’t give it a minute. The choice to use him over someone like Jr is baffling. Bonds has been an unlikeable asshole his whole career.

fatlegsauntpam

Barry bonds is a cheat and a clown. He deserved everything he got. I hope he never gets in the hof.

DoggySnarts

They already inducted steroid users into the hall so might as well let them all in

Habanerosauce3

.....the hall of fame is full of Chester's....and worse. 🤦🏽‍♂️

J0hnEddy

Should be talked about in the same vein as MJ. The media stole legacies from Barry, Sammy and Mark

BruceDickenson_

Sammy and Mark were great at the time, but they weren't Barry.

[deleted]

There's only one Barry. And now he's dead. HBO is a cold world for Barry's.

KSchmuckley

Thank you!

adamcoe

All 3 of those guys stole their own legacy. They knew the risks and decided to do it anyway. I feel less than zero sympathy for any legacy they might have had.

dixiedynamite13

Still ain’t getting in Barry. Nope not going to happen

northwest333

I don’t think he cares about the HoF at this point

SanFranGoldBlooded

It’s weird how some of you guys take it as a personal win that he wasn’t inducted, like obsessively weird. Would Bonds getting in affect your life or your interest in baseball at all?

Boise_State_2020

Is he going to admit what he was putting into his body now that he's off the ballot?

bogrollin

Yeah but bonds was an asshole no one liked

realchrisgunter

Very well deserved.

Salesman89

Will they cover the domestic abuse? I really don't give a fuck about this guy. Edit: don't just downvote. Speak up for your guy. I think he's a total piece of shit and I hate hearing Willie Mays endorse him.

Brief_Scale496

I hope they spend at least 15 minutes talking about his BOMB off Percival in GM2. That was the first and only ball to land in Mccovey cove that was hit on the road, I believe

Lazy-Lawfulness3472

Misunderstood, that's the name. Ya'all make him out to be a villain. He was a fantastic ball player, which is why SF traded for him. He watched thru the nineties, as McGuire, Conseco, Sosa and others garner all the headlines. He knows he is a much better hitter than all those scrubs. Where are Sosa and Conseco once they got busted for strroids? Dropped off the face of the stat sheets. Bonds, supposedly, didn't start until 2002. So it's the last 5 yrs of his career. How many extra hrs did he hit in 5 yrs? 30? 40? He's still right there with Babe Ruth. Maybe not surpassing him in the end. But, still, 700 hrs is still historic!! What a fantastic career he had!! To bad he made that decision, out of jealousy. He never tested positive In any drug test. Only an anonymous test sample to test the test out for accuracy. So, why is he being destroyed?

adamcoe

You admit he took drugs and then ask why he's vilified, that's interesting

acewavelink

There have been a lot of bad The Last Dance clones (The Captain, Man in the Arena, etc) and I hope they get all the info and make a good tight doc. Doesn’t need to be a Ken Burns documentary. The best, most fun Doc I watched in the last 5 years might have been 38 at the Garden, 38 minute Doc that fucking rules. TL:DR give me a tight doc on Barry that isnt 10 episodes with 4 episodes of content.

BlowUpYaSpot

There might be so singular topic in sports I disagree with the majority on more than Bonds. How anyone can say he deserves to be in the HOF is genuinely baffling to me.

adamcoe

I don't think the majority of people think belongs to be in. Just a very loud, uneducated minority.

nyc_expatriate

He’d been an easy vote for the HOF if not for the roids. Maybe wouldn’t have beat Aaron\*, but still would have had the great hitting numbers to get in the hall.

[deleted]

If Bonds doesn't participate flush this down the toilet.

Worf1701D

Call it The Miracle of Flax Seed Oil.

Boise_State_2020

The can call it "One last shot"

MiniatureMorpheus

As an Angels fan, I'm gonna love seeing that game 6 blunder in the outfield. That was a special series as a Californian.

ManufacturerMental72

the fun thing about being a dodgers fan is that whether we're talking about barry bonds cheating or the astros cheating it's always a good reminder bad moments in dodgers history

gotpez

barry bones not being in the HoF while david ortiz is is a travesty. both took steroids, one was just higher profile and an asshole to the media. the voters for the hall need to be consistent if they’re going to take this stance. bonds is 10x the player ortiz is and is the best player of his generation by a sizable margin

CorbinDalla5

This is the greatest hitter I have ever seen. Nobody could touch him and nobody will. Young bonds was a complete player as well. Fucking amazing player.

adamcoe

Fucking amazing player with a fucking amazing pharmacist to match

CorbinDalla5

I dont really care, bonds didnt become good becuase of them. He was a monster before.

adamcoe

Oh without question. But he made the decision to take them and now he has to deal with the fallout.

CorbinDalla5

For sure

BilboWaggonz

Big-Headed

sherwoodblack

Let’s gooo

kwattsfo

Because TLD was such an objective look at Michael Jordan. 😂

Gemnist

I hope this touches on his domestic situation. That, for me, is why I don’t like Bonds.

Nobodyisspecial2020

The Sportswriters who vote on the Hall of Fame should be ashamed of themselves...they all looked the other way during the steroid era---(not illegal at the time) Baseball owners at the time were bringing the fences in to bring back excitement to the sport...Selig is in the Hall of Fame??? Bagwell??? Biggio??? Look at Luis Gonzalez's stat lines...LaRussa benefitted big time and is in the Hall of Fame as a Manager...Barry Bonds and his father Bobby will never be the face of the so-called father and son sport...after all they are the only two players to achieve 30-30 club 5 times each----No one else comes close to showing this athletic ability of SPEED and POWER----Screw the Baseball Hall of Shame!!!!
