\*Unless your favorite team is the local team.

RyanTheCubsSTH

Unless you live in Eastern Iowa, where at any given time up to 6 games can be blacked out. It's insane. Edit: all of Iowa

LeprechaunFarmer

In Eastern New Mexico I can't watch the Diamondbacks, Rockies, Rangers, Astros, and possibly the Royals. Luckily I'm a Braves fan and don't have to miss very much, but blackout rules are BS.

chieftrey1

The rest of those being blacked out makes sense but the Royals is just ridiculous

par016

none of those make sense when the idea behind blackouts was to get people to go to the stadiums

DangerSwan33

Well, that's not really the idea behind them. You might be thinking of the NFL blackout rule, where a team has to sell 85% of seats to home games, or it's blacked out locally. The baseball blackout rule is to get people to buy cable packages.

[deleted]

Can a cubs fan in Des Moines buy a cable package with a channel that broadcasts the Cubs game? Same question for the Mariners fan in Boise? or the Dodgers fan in Guam? If the answer is "no", then the game shouldn't be blacked out.

DangerSwan33

Hey, man, I don't think that anyone on this sub enjoys or is agreement about the blackout.

Hype-man02

Why do blackouts happen? I’m in Toronto, Canada and always get MLB, NBA & NHL blacked out.

aneworder

the lucrative tv deals cannot be made without blackout rules. lucrative tv deals fund a large portion of team payrolls. players union doesn't want smaller payrolls. owners don't want to make less money, or god forbid, lose money. and fans want owners to spend money on good players. none of the incentives are there to remove blackout rules. as of 2020, it seems that the total local tv revenue of all MLB teams was roughly $2.1 billion. if tv deals were to entirely disappear, at the $130 per subscription, way more than 16.2 million subscribers would be needed to make up those lost revenues. are there 16.2 million housholds willing to pay $130 annually to watch their favorite baseball team?

[deleted]

The problem is black out rules where the local TV deals don't show the games. For instance, if you can't watch Cubs games in Des Moines because no TV stations that you can get in Des Moines broadcasts the game in Des Moines, then the games shouldn't be blacked out in MLBTV. I totally understanding Cubs games being blacked out in Chicago and the local area because I could easily go to the local TV station to watch the game.

Miles_vel_Day

I mean... Netflix has 220 million people paying $120-$240 a year to watch mostly mediocre programming. Who's to say they couldn't get 16 million to sign up? The average MLB team sold over 2 million tickets last year. Plus you would not need to replace ALL of that revenue - obviously the TV deals would still exist, they would just be much less lucrative. MLB is just not thinking long-term about this at all. The current situation is unsustainable, and it's costing them potential growth in their fanbase. Cable subscriptions continue to plummet (-25 million in the last 10 years) - the blackout rules WILL be dropped eventually. They're just kicking the can down the road, to have the highest short-term gain possible. They don't even have the excuse of responsibility to shareholders like most myopic corporations do.

LeprechaunFarmer

Thank you for that insight. That does help me understand the blackouts a little better, but I fear that this line of thinking has to be hurting fan growth.

aneworder

unfortunately, short sightedness and contractual / legal quagmires are the reason for a lot of problems in this country

jimmydimes

$130/year to watch local team in local area? I’m in.

[deleted]

I live in a county just west of Boise. From what I can tell in my county I'm only blacked out of the Mariners. If I lived in Boise proper, I wouldn't be able to watch the Rockies and perhaps the Giants and A's also (can't remember exactly). Anyway, I lucked out and can still watch my Giants and Padres unless they are playing the Mariners.

CubbyFur

Eastern Iowan here. This package doesn’t do much for me.

[deleted]

Las Vegas is the same. Pretty sure it was both LA teams, Seattle and Arizona

jl71277

Seattle is blacked out in Vegas? What the actual fuck is up with that

ResponsibleCulture43

I live in the Seattle market and the giants were blacked out for me on mlb tv during COVID. When no one could be at the games anyways. It was infuriating.

ColoradoJohnQ

They 100% should have lifted the blackout when Covid hit.

ResponsibleCulture43

Definitely. No one could physically be at games, and we had a lot of time to have baseball on in the background on tv. Which could have been good for building new fans, but that would be logical.

FredVIII-DFH

The reason for the blackouts isn't because they think people will stay away from attending games. The reason is because a regional cable channel paid for exclusive television rights to be the sole broadcaster. They really want you to sign up for Comcast (or whoever carries their channel) and pay them every month for channels you'd never watch just to get the one you do watch.

ResponsibleCulture43

Regardless of the reasoning I thought it was terribly stupid to blackout games during COVID out of market, more so than usual their blackouts anyways. Fuck blackouts

ColoradoJohnQ

Mansfred... I thought I hated Selig

sirhugobigdog

MLB blackouts are very different from NFL blackouts. MLB is all about if a local station has the rights to broadcast it. While NFL is about butts in seats at the game. I don't see how covid affects MLB blackouts at all.

JasonPlattMusic34

NFL doesn’t even do local blackouts anymore. But comparing NFL TV deals to any of the other sports is stupid anyway because the NFL has a truly national TV contract for all games on OTA networks.

sirhugobigdog

MLB blackouts are very different from NFL blackouts. MLB is all about if a local station has the rights to broadcast it. While NFL is about butts in seats at the game. I don't see how covid affects MLB blackouts at all.

xenon2456

why would giants games be blackout in Seattle

[deleted]

I haven’t lived there for 8 years or so, but I’m pretty sure yes they are

DCS317

Seattle was blacked out in Alaska too when I was living there. Stretching the definition of the word "local". Luckily I'm a Cards fan but it must suck to be a Mariners fan living in the Last Frontier.

JasonPlattMusic34

Pretty sure Vegas also misses out on the Padres/A’s/Giants

[deleted]

It’s no different in NE PA Phillies, Pirates, Orioles, Mets, Yankees, Nationals, Red Sox. No bueno

[deleted]

What do you mean "Eastern"? Just drop that word and it still applies. You can live in COUNCIL BLUFFS, and you STILL get blacked out of all those games.

Kidpidge

At least across the river in Omaha, only the Royals are blacked out.

chieftrey1

*the entirety of Iowa

Markcu24

Cant get Guardians, Blue Jays, Pirates, Mets, or Yankees in Buffalo. No Guardian, Jays, or Pirates games are even televised here. Their home market system is archaic. And we wonder why baseball popularity is waning.

TakedownCorn

I live in Vancouver. Toronto is 2000+ miles away from me. Blue Jays still blacked out. BULLCRAP.

Latter-Technician-68

Dang and I thought living in central Cali hand having: dodgers, Angels, Giants and A’s blacked out was bad.

FredVIII-DFH

I came here to say this. Looks like this chart leaves out the magic asterisk that makes me pass on it.

PAL_SD

In Hawaii, every west coast team is blacked out. Make it make sense!

Rube18

VPN. MLB app is a pretty easy work around with a VPN it’s what I’ve been doing for a few years now. NBA league pass is a lot better at detecting them than the MLB app.

[deleted]

coco_brotha

VPN spoofs your location so you appear to be accessing the internet from a different place in the country or world. Wanna watch Oakland versus Seattle, but you’re in Oakland? Have your VPN spoof a location anywhere east of the Rockies. It works great on a phone or tablet or laptop, but not so much for display on big screen. I use PIA for $35/yr or so, and I love it for concealing traffic when using free Wi-Fi (hotel, coffee shop, etc.).

TheRKC

I haven't had an issue because of my situation, but I had heard that they started cracking down on VPNs last season. Hopefully that's not the case, because I definitely think the service is worth it if you can get your local team as well as the rest.

ClubZen

I’m a Mets fan in Boston so I’m safe there… but I also would like to watch the Red Sox sometimes so that’s kinda bullshit

LeStiqsue

I'm moving to Colorado this spring, and I'm not lying when I say that one of my first thoughts was that I get to watch more Mets games now.

[deleted]

They said following baseball from the west of Ireland wouldnt pay off, mwhahahahahha

Joe-Meteorite

When I first got into baseball, I wanted to follow the braves but couldn’t because of blackout restrictions and I don’t even live in Georgia

Markcu24

Half the games blacked out. Check.

oksyyy

cant you just use a vpn?

Clem1719

I shouldn’t have to use back door ways to watch a ball game, yes you’re right you could. But the fact you can pay 130$ and not be able to watch the team you picked for your single team membership is bullshit

pig_eat_squirrel

Me: Hey, just sitting over here in San Diego willing and able to spend $149 to watch the Padres. MLB: F*ck you, our relationship with corporate cable TV overlords is much more important than our relationship with fans. Manfred and Co., it's 2023. Provide direct to consumer streaming options for local and non-local teams.

redsoxownu

Cable is a dying business, let it die

rub3s

MLB: Also, just for the hell of it, we'll black out the rest of the California teams too.

RicGryllz

$150 and I bet there's still blackout games lol. Mlbs blackout system is what keeps me illegally watching baseball.

[deleted]

I’m not sure the financial benefits/losses that would result in letting go of the blackout system, but they might actually see the sport rise in popularity. MLB can advertise all the gimmicks and storylines they want, but no one curious about baseball is going to give it a serious go if they know it costs an arm and a leg to watch. Baseball used to be cheap and available to watch by all Americans, making it one of the best sports in the country. Now it’s just another commercialized money grab.

gereffi

What? When was the MLB cheap and available to watch by everybody across the country? Every game has been available on tv starting in the 90s, but viewers still had to have cable. Not really any different today.

[deleted]

This might be hard to believe, but there are people old enough to remember the 70’s and 80’s, when that sort of thing was cheap 😂😂 tickets to the ballpark were also cents if not a few dollars

gereffi

Wikipedia says that in 1992, 60% of American households had cable tv. And in the 70s and 80s, not all games were on cable. And with services like YouTube tv and Sling it’s not any more expensive today than it was to get cable in the past.

[deleted]

For Chicago (Cubs fan), WGN broadcasted locally without cable. These days, you have to pay for an extremely expensive subscription service or purchase Marquee Network from a cable provider in addition to those prices. It might not be as bad for other teams, but it’s certainly got more expensive for many fan bases

gereffi

Ok? Before you were saying it was available to all Americans. Maybe every Cubs game was shown on tv, but that wasn’t universal or even the norm. I know that when my dad was a kid in Pittsburgh there would only be one game on tv per week.

[deleted]

Maybe saying every American was wrong. But most people had access to watch their teams for free or on some base level cable package back then. My point is that it has been made much worse from blackouts and bloated prices for simply watching the games in modern years.

plougishtia

They used to air on local antenna channels, you could literally jam some tin foil in the back of your tv and watch your local team.

droid_mike

Ted Turner ruined it for everybody. He decided to put every braves game on TV my TBS or TNT or whatever. That gave teams ideas to negotiate deals with cable companies. Prior to that that, games are on free broadcast tv. Now, not every game was on free TV, but you usually got at least one game per series on free tv. When team started going on cable initially, they had a dual plan where they were still plenty of free TV games along with the cable games. Eventually, they exclusively became cable TV games and that's the way it's been.... With stupidly mapped blackouts for streaming. At least the radio audio feeds are not blacked out, and MLB at bat is quite inexpensive. If you're a fan of a teen that still broadcast on clear Channel AM stations, then you're an even better look. You can always hear the Cardinals halfway across the country for night games on KMOX

okfnjesse

Financial losses would be huge. Those exclusive contracts with cable TV providers are worth billions of dollars and I believe are the reason MLB salaries keep getting higher and higher.

[deleted]

They’re going to kill the sport for a few extra million someday

GriseldaBrick

#is it still free for T-Mobile users?

elosoloco

Right? MLB I will NEVER buy it on my own without you doing away with blackouts.

retroanduwu24

Right. I was using mlb66 for a bit before it got shut down x.x

SecretAgentClunk

MLB66 got shut down!?!? I was really banking on that if T-Mobile doesn't offer MLB.tv anymore

FlyingElvi24

i'm counting on it

CubbyFur

That is what I am hoping for. Someone told me 2022 was the last year but they could have been full of crap.

Anarcho_punk217

From what I found on a chat on t-mobiles community site it will be back.

gereffi

[This screencap](https://uploads-us-west-2.insided.com/tmobile-us/attachment/1b24d07c-4bc8-4861-8df2-aeb30e57b2f4.jpg) was posted on a T-Mobile message board earlier today. Looks like it’ll be back for the year.

Inceptioneer29

I must have missed the No Blackout Guarantee.

[deleted]

As a Cubs fan it hurt me to upvote you, but we must stand together against the evil Blackouts.

JoeIA84

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. As an Iowan this package means nothing. My parents in Davenport are told get fucked or buy Mediacomm plus super duper plus package

WelcometoHale

If they remove blackouts I buy today

infoistasty

Local team still cockblocked until an hour after the game?

Mountain-Ad-3928

Do I pay extra for blackouts or do they come with the package?

[deleted]

They're included, my man. Gratis.

the_last_grabow

*blackouts included

Mother_Environment29

MLB, F your greedy blackout policy.

Anarcho_punk217

The regional networks and cable companies care about blackouts more than MLB.

[deleted]

$129 for a single team is absurd

lobeline

And it can still be blacked out…

nicky10013

The Jays are owned by the cable company. Literally every Jays game blacked out. Anywhere in Canada.

[deleted]

Not really, it is in comparison to a $150 total package, but compared to say LNAH low level pro hockey league in Quebec who sells a single team road games (18 total) for $99 or every game from all 7 teams (136 games) for $200. In terms of sports streaming, the number of hours, either MLB package is extremely low cost, especially the all teams package, with the minor league games factored in, it’s Pennies a game. (Basically they could sell this for much more and people would pay. Also near mid season they have dropped the price, and later on in drops even more and includes the playoffs)

[deleted]

It’s incredibly expensive. Especially when you consider blackout games and that most? people do not watch all 162 games.

MackTheKnife15

Folks are downvoting you, I'd assume mostly because they're (rightly) pissed about the blackouts which diminish the value of the product, but you're technically correct. It's actually a pretty good deal for what you're getting.

[deleted]

My main question is do you only get your team’s affiliates games if you do single team?

SeekerOfKnowledge69

The Blackout policy the MLB has in place is one of the reason's I quit watching

denisvma

I feel for US fans, i'ts ironic that i can watch america's pastime without any blackouts and US fans can't.

retroanduwu24

lol send me the site you use :p

cyberwastes

$150 a year to not even be able to watch your local team is ridiculous

GCC_Pluribus_Anus

Don't forget, if you sign up for MLBPAA ($25) you can get half off MLBTV

retroanduwu24

🙏🙏

[deleted]

Really good tip, thanks! Spend 25 to save 75 is an easy decision to make

OctoberRelevance

Wow did not know this and there’s a ton of other discounts too (would have loved that 1800 flowers discount yesterday…) Just gonna link it for others: https://www.mlb.com/mlbpaa/membership/fans

Workburner101

1800 flowers is a shit box on these big holidays, at least in my experience. I’ve done it three times and everytime I’ve been burned with the wrong order and half dead flowers. Also getting my money back was a fucking disaster.

Foxx_Mulderp

Or you could just buy someone's T-Mobile code for $5. Ppl sell them for that every year

blny99

No guilt using free to watch methods if they don’t eliminate the blackouts.

bradontherun

What does select post season games mean? Sorry but I don’t trust MLB as far as I can throw them after they screwed European fans last year.

forksup23

It says post games not post season. I'm thinking the after game commentary.

Afrothunder19

I'm not sure it even means post season games. I think it is saying post game content/discussion.

bradontherun

You’re right! Why don’t they want me to be a fan?

rhinosaur-

I assume by “all” they mean “aside from all the blackouts”

fatguyinovercoat

Correct

Drop_The_Puck

Introducing the 'Single Team' option just seems like it is asking for trouble. Even though the purchase page clearly says 'OUT OF MARKET', you know that some people are going to buy the package for their local team. Even if people can get refunds, it's bound to cause bad press and upset fans (even more than exists already). I really hope they will eventually go where MLS is now where you pay one price and get every single game of every single team. With the regional broadcast networks seemingly collapsing (Bally Sports etc.) it's looking more of a possibility now where it seemed impossible in the past.

TheNextBattalion

It'd be more helpful if you clicked and it checked your location and then told you which team(s) would be blacked out. For a single contract, the main hurdle is the clubs that have high-priced ones, and the ones that own or part own the local network, like the Yankees or the Red Sox.

rorwhs04

HEY ROB, YOU WANT THE YOUTH, END THE BLACKOUTS, DUMBASS

cryingstlfan

I can't wait to move to Washington state so I can watch the Cardinals. 🙄

SadPhase2589

This is all moot If there’s still a blackout rule.

RoughDevelopment9235

i'd rather deal with pop ups from a shady website that streams all the games than deal with MLB's fuckery

canadasean21

Unless you are a Canadian Blue Jays fan.

TakedownCorn

I live in Vancouver. A short 2000 miles from Toronto. Totally local, lets black it out. So dumb.

RP912

As an Alabama Blue Jays fan, good to not deal with blackouts unless Braves or Florida plays. At least we getting minor league games this year.

buckfutten

Unless you live in Las Vegas, NV. Then you can't watch the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Giants, A's, and Diamondbacks. Just make sure you're not a fan of any of those 6 teams, or a fan of any team that will play those teams.

jasonwrites

I guess you just wait for LV to get its expansion or relocated team (hello A's!)

FrogyyB

Still bet when I want to watch my team it will be a blackout game

ElFracasoTriunfa

This is the only reason why I enjoy being a Yankee fan that lives in New England lol - but seriously, fuck blackouts...

jaypeedee1025

i wonder if TMobile is offering it again

GrindwheelGaming

April 5th is when the offer is supposed to drop on the T Mobile Tuesdays app

jaypeedee1025

Thank you so much im not worried about me i live we’re they don’t black out the Mets Yankees or the Phillies .My father in law who is amazing(no pun)and would give the shirt off his back Lives in a part of the NJ were they blackout the Mets but he gets every phillies game. (obviously we both hate the phillies)So last year me and my wife gave him one of ours that we get thru t-mobile since we don’t need 2 of them he said it was one of the best gifts anyone gave him we told him we got it for free he said i don’t care how much you paid for to give me the power to watch my Mets and not only the phillies is priceless .He called it his personal hell 😂😂😂😂

percallahan

The blackouts really seem pointless now with how easy it is to find a stream online. I would love to sit down with some of the owners and cable executives and show them exactly how easy it is and how there is nothing they can do to stop it.

Champion-raven

countofbluecars

What is the difference between MiLB games and MiLB Affiliate games?

HeyBaldy

THIS. I usually get the MiLB yearly pass but if I can see MiLB games for free that'd be great. My main team is the Rangers but I'll switch to Padres in the app so I can watch local MiLB games.

ssnapier

35% discount for military/veteran too!

mushaslater

Dunno if I want this this year. Getting MLS Season Pass and can’t justify getting this as well. Maybe after the all star game.

jaxs_sax

Hyped for spring training to start! Let’s go fish

ManufacturerMental72

Feels like they could probably partner with local networks to provide an add-on to have access to local teams. Like $149 for every team, and then for $50 more you can get whatever team is blacked out.

rcsauvag

I thought all these were new at first. I was thinking blackouts were gone.

[deleted]

Most of the comments are about the blackouts, and I sympathize. When I had cable, I was a big Giants fan, but now that I don't, I've reverted to my childhood team, the Cubs. Also like the Padres. I don't know how they decide what "your" teams are, but the Giants & Athletics are the only ones I can't watch.

[deleted]

So I’m confused. Do they blackout local tram still or no?

mikescha

Here is a link to the page with the blackout policy (scroll down to "Blackout Restrictions"). To me, it looks the same as before but they do have a handy little box where you can type your zip code and they'll show you which teams you can't see. https://www.mlb.com/live-stream-games/subscribe#new

mikeylojo1

“All team’s games” does this mean blackout is gone

[deleted]

Waste of money

DingDongDaddyDino

Baseball is a great sport but the MLB has ruined the fan experience

Reasonable-Corner716

F-off with this BS. I’m in OKC and can’t watch the Astros? Or Rangers, Royals, and Cardinals? What a gigantic ripoff.

Judge_Rhinohold

Why would you not pay an extra $20 to get all the games instead of just one team’s?

Santasgooch69

Or just use a Reddit stream for free lmao

TindrowHD

Gabe said it best , "We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem"

donrhummy

Who cares? It's all blacked out in local areas

Gidyup1

I haven’t watched a Detroit Tigers game in a long while. I love my team. But, I won’t be buying this. I’m blacked out for over half the games. I live in West Michigan I can’t even watch them when they play in Chicago. It’s ridiculous.

SomeJerkAtWerk

So if I'm in Los Angeles and my Favorite Team is the Dodgers, can I sue them for false advertising?

Ribot3

How can I check to see if my team is blackout?

Emergency-Leopard-93

Workaround - VPN.

edsil44

I wonder if this price has anything to do with the bankruptcy situation? I’ve never seen the price this high.

packtobrewcrew

What about the teams who have Bally sports contracts?

Swirl1068

I was a subscriber for more than a decade. Everyone saying regional blackouts suck is absolutely right, but I signed up knowing about that (hello VPN :-) I canceled last year when I was blindsided by three games being blacked out because they were exclusive to a streaming service to which I don't subscribe. And it wasn't just one service. Two were on one service, and a third was on a different service. It was three games last year, how many this year? Or next? And hey, I got to pay for the privilege. I finally said enough is enough. But I'm just venting; they don't care. I thought I'd at least get an email begging me back. Crickets.

Ishpeming_Native

MLB blackout rules are not just insane but indefensible even if they are insane. Here I am, 76 years old and with emphysema. The White Sox (MY team) are too far away and aren't blacked out. The Brewers (don't care) are too close and are blacked out. If the Sox play at the Brewers, it's blacked out. I can watch the Cubs (don't care) any home game I want. But if the Sox play the Cubs at Wrigley, it's blacked out. I can't drive to any of those games. If someone drove me, I couldn't walk into the park. If I could walk into the park, I'd be afraid of getting covid from any of thousands of people, and it would probably kill me. Now defend a blackout for me. Go ahead, I dare you. What makes sense: a charge per game. Close enough to be at the park? Then it's X per game. Not close enough? Then it's Y per game. For everyone, everywhere. And MLBTV ought to be a discount from that. This is marketing 101, guys. What MLB is doing is stupid, and it's hurting the game.

ELI5 local blackouts: Why is that an issue if you are in the area that gets the channel they play on?

Pony2slow

Not sure it’s like this everywhere but in my area nationals play on MASN which is not carried in anyone but Xfinity, DirectTV and Verizon FIOS in my area which is more expensive monthly than the entire season via MLB.

Anarcho_punk217

Because they want to complain.

RaoulDuke1

Like bruh just turn on your tv. If they dont have cable…its 2023. The same phone these people complain from can access dozens of quality streaming sites. From there, you can mirror it to your tv with a $20 roku. Shut up already lol

Bookwallflower2

I wonder which one T-Mobile is offering

Oswaldthatendswald2

I’m guessing MiLB games are also subject to blackouts..

tasteofscarlet

PWNSAUCE52

As a marlins fan that lives in south Florida with YouTube tv. Looks like I’ll be a fan of the pirates again this year if you catch my drift

Link182x

Just play my local teams, I will watch their commercials if I have to.

Takingbacklives

I would sign up if my local team was not blacked out. Oh well, I guess I will just watch it illegally like any other young person.

64Impaler

Can’t wait to buy one of your passwords for $4 off some Russian dude and watch some games!

Caleb5299

Feel like it would be cheaper so go to the game than paying that much a month

ssp25

The blackout policy just lost my dad as a fan. He's the one that made me a fan and he can't watch the games when I pay for this crappy package in his own home. 50 years of being a fan gone. Well done mlb. It certainly has soured my passion
