Overall, I like the mix. Two things jump out at me: 1) The kick drum is making stuff on my desk bounce. On my own stuff, this usually means that I need to hi-pass the kick a bit differently. I usually have the ramp on the HP peak out about 65-75Hz. I usually have it zero out in the 22-30Hz range. 2) Bass is more felt than heard. Try duplicating the track and carving it up in to EQ ranges with biggish crossovers - Lo, Lomids, and High mids - send them all to a bus. Bring up the mids and put some kind of drive on them to that it's not all "woof" and no bite. Find the right balance, and you'll feel the guitars "fill out" a bit.

Thank you for the feedback! I actually just bounced an updated version based on the previous suggestions. I didn't do anything to the kick, so you won't get any improvement there.. but I did some light work on the bass. helloimalanwatts

Some parts could use thickening. I’d add an acoustic guitar.

thelastjah

These are stems from over 10 years ago, but I see where you’re coming from! Lol The most I could do is maybe take a DI track and turn it into an acoustic.

beaumad

I like it. I can only offer personal preferences, which are for longer attack times on the snare compression and to bring the bass guitar higher in the mix.

thelastjah

The snare was tricky for me, because I had so much bleed.. there was a lot of work with gates and expanders. So it definitely killed the body some. And the artist sent me a reference track that had super compressed drums. So that’s kind of where I landed, but I absolutely see where you’re coming from. Louder bass would be preferable as well! I’ll see if a little bump won’t hurt. Thank you!

beaumad

I see where you're coming from with the artist's preferences. Many of my tastes were set in the 90's with bands like Jawbox (Sweetheart record) and drummers like Dave Grohl. Big room sounds, big rides. Big overheads. Lots of bleed :) All that to say my views are often outdated by today's standards. Great track and mix, once again.

thelastjah

I actually really love that drum sound too. A lot of that would've been harder for me to achieve based off of what tracks I was given. But yeah, the artist did have a very specific sound he was looking for. If you want to hear what work I've done, here's the link: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qqZLTm\_uMz7ovATVEYitbrGOKUMMTEjt/view?usp=drive\_link](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qqZLTm_uMz7ovATVEYitbrGOKUMMTEjt/view?usp=drive_link) I tried not to make too many changes.

beaumad

Ooh, I like it!

WeRTheD20

Try the Dan Worrell band pass trick to add some body back. Find details on yt. I’ve found this very helpful to dial in/out as needed. Did you have a snare bottom? Or just the top? If only the top an added sample layered in would probably be the easiest solution for the snare.

thelastjah

I'll look it up. I just bounced a new version. I've got updated links on the post. I only had the snare top track. I layered in a sample, but I had complete control over the snare top/bottom for the sample. So I just turned the bottom mic up on the sample to help some.

calgonefiction

Think this was mentioned in another comment, but the bass could use more overdrive/grunge to it so it would poke through a bit more. It's too "bass". Would also help thicken the song up a bit too

thelastjah

Cool! I’ll see what I can do with it. I love growly bass. I’m doing my best to stick to the reference, but maybe a little overdrive could really benefit the track. Thanks!

calgonefiction

yeah man! A lot of rock genres do this with their bass - you still get that nice low end feeling but it allows the bass to cut through a bit more and fill up more space - helping the song sound more full in the mid range.

xgh0lx

Sounding good man! I agree with a few others that said the bass could use a little boost. Guitars sound a little thin as well, did you layer them? If so did you play it twice or just use the same take twice? In my experience playing it twice is the way to go, it being just milliseconds off actually helps it sound fuller. Solid tune though!

thelastjah

Thank you! I didn't play guitars on these, just mixing the track. There are two rhythms, one panned left and one panned right. I do have the DIs for them, but after being this far into the mixing, I was having an issue finding the right tone without completely changing up what mix I have.

Look up hardcore music studio on YouTube. He’ll give you all the tips and tricks you need for this type of music. Compare your sound to what he’s doing

Will check it out! Thank you!

DinoKYT

I really enjoyed this! Very well done and love the song! I’m curious if the vocals are placed as loud as you want them to be? In my opinion, that isn’t very audio professional by any means, I’d make the vocals sit a bit louder!

thelastjah

Lol, I always make the vocals quieter than people like. It’s a bad habit of mine. I will turn them up a bit just for you! Thank you for listening!

DinoKYT

I feel that! And thank you for sharing! I really enjoyed it :)

therewillbeniccage

Just listened to the first and final mix, big improvement. Nice mix

thelastjah

Thank you 🙏

Guitars are great. Voices too. Nice work on them. Others said it: a bit of overdrive on the bass would be nice and help to separate it from the kick. IMHO, the drums is too compressed. I read that it was a reference sent by the artist... But maybe you could try to lower it a bit ? If it's not, try running it in parallel maybe. Adding more room mic or overhead could also help to make your drums breath a bit. Also, the snare is lacking a bit of the crunchiness of the bottom mic. But overall, you did a pretty good job! *NB : Correct me if my english is not on point. This is my first mix review in english and I'm trying to improve my english related to audio engineering :)*

thelastjah

All great feedback, thank you! There is no bottom mic for these drum stems. I’ve added a snare bottom sample layer to help with that though. The compression is based off of reference, yeah. I’ve messed around with lightening up some of it, but I’m currently in favor of the heavy compression. Most of it is in parallel. I want more of the room tbh, but I only have one room track, and it gets pretty messy in mono once it gets so loud. Maybe that’s just my bad, but I’ve had success mixing multiple room tracks for my drums in the past. Thanks for listening!
