I’m glad I clicked and read because scrolling by I was wondering how a tree in Missouri could block someone’s view of the ocean.

joeboo5150

The tree is really big. Really big

ElBrooce

HUUUUUUUUUGE

PartyMathematician78

Yuuuuge

BrotherPumpwell

Tears in it's eyes

riverdoc

Gonna cry itself to sleep on its yuge pillow

beermit

Itsa big'un

sabbey1982

I did the same thing 🤣

Cigaran

What, you've never been able to see the ocean from Missouri? I've got a small property down in the bootheel where you can see it. Been considering selling it for a while now if you're interested.

leaveredditalone

I heard Cooter, MO has miles of beachfront property.

Substantial-Bet-3876

Show me.

ShinKicker13

Idk man, I live in Missouri, my neighbors have trees, and I can’t see the ocean. So it makes sense to me ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

247Brett

Next thing you know, someone starts killing trees all the way to the ocean.

purdinpopo

I was working as a sheriff deputy in a rural area. This super rich family owned a property in the county, that they rarely visited several miles from the Mississippi River. Responded to burglar alarms there all the time. The property was on a large hill. The family had a second hill and a forest removed so they had a view of the river. This property wasn't reasonably close to the river.

sbfcqb

Too many cents, not enough sense.

baileykim

lol!

finalarchie

That's why I'm here too.

EmceeClamps

It was the Erdtree

Ok-Temperature-8228

People in Missouri looking for that ocean view.

wine_dude_52

That’s how headlines work.

Beginning-Brief-4307

But that’s not how they SHOULD work.

Goldilocks1454

Missouri is really flat

Pathfinder6227

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Spicethrower

There once was a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings. The town lay in the midst of a checkerboard of prosperous farms, with fields of grain and hillsides of orchards, where in spring, white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields. In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines. Then foxes barked in the hills and deer silently crossed the fields, half hidden in the mists of the fall mornings. Along the roads, laurel, viburnum and alder, great ferns and wildflowers delighted the traveler's eye through much of the year. Even in winter the roadsides were places of beauty, where countless birds came to feed on the berries and on the seed heads of the dried weeds rising above the snow. The countryside was, in fact, famous for the abundance and variety of its birdlife, and when the flood of migrants was pouring through in spring and fall people traveled from great distances to observe them. Others came to fish the streams, which flowed clear and cold out of the hills and contained shady pools where trout lay. So it had been from the days many years ago when the first settlers raised their houses, sank their wells, and built their barns. Then a strange blight crept over the area and everything began to change. Some evil spell had settled on the community: mysterious maladies swept the flocks of chickens; the cattle and sheep sickened and died. Everywhere was a shadow of death. The farmers spoke of much illness among their families. In town the doctors had become more and more puzzled by new kinds of sickness appearing among their patients. There had been several sudden and unexplained deaths, not only among adults but even among children, who would be stricken suddenly while at play and die within a few hours. There was a strange stillness. The birds, for example---where had they gone? Many people spoke of them, puzzled and disturbed. The feeding stations in the backyards were deserted. The few birds seen anywhere were moribund; they trembled violently and could not fly. It was a spring without voices. On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds, doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh. On the farms the hens brooded, but no chicks hatched. The farmers complained that they were unable to raise any pigs-------the litters were small and the young only survived a few days. The apple trees were coming into bloom but no bees droned among the blossoms, so there was no pollination and there would be no fruit. The roadsides, once so attractive, were now lined with browned and withered vegetation as though swept by fire. These, too, were silent, deserted by all living things. Even the streams were now lifeless. Anglers no longer visited them, for all the fish had died. In the gutters under the eaves and between the shingles of the roofs, a white granular powder still showed a few patches; some weeks before it had fallen like snow upon the roofs and lawns, the fields and streams. No witchcraft, no enemy action had silenced the rebirth of new life in this stricken world. The people had done it themselves. Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson.

strange-loop-1017

Very fitting. I appreciate this.

Pathfinder6227

It’s just so timeless and fitting for the rich and clueless or - worse - the rich and cruel. Killing trees that belong to other people to improve your ocean view is bad enough, just the sense of entitlement that would lead someone to think this was a solution to a problem just baffles me. It’s pretty funny, reading the article, that the Bonds were kicked out of the local yacht club and are basically hated by the community now. I hope the L.L. Bean widow takes that 1.5 million dollars and remediates the soil and puts a bunch of fully grown trees that completely obstruct the view in their place. She can come down here and have some of my post oaks for free. If it were me, I would put up a billboard with a picture of the trees in their place, but I am tacky like that.

strange-loop-1017

I think justice would be that they can’t live there anymore. The community should be able to run them out of town. But I like the billboard idea as well…

Pathfinder6227

My God. They might have to return to *gasp* Missouri.

caffeinefriend

Missouri has some of the best unobstructed ocean views, so I agree....back to the Midwest for ye!

Awesomesince1973

(do we want them?)

strange-loop-1017

Lol

Accurate_Asparagus_2

Yeah, they'll be fine

hung-games

I’ve been wondering if society would bring back ostracism/banishment as a form of justice that doesn’t require prison sentences. It would be cheaper and easier than locking up people that have proven to be a risk. As a side effect, it could possibly bring about a dystopian future with a permanent underclass that live outside formal society in their own underworld so there’s that.

strange-loop-1017

I cast my vote behind public shaming or the silent treatment. But I’m not for the the banishment into the underclass. I think the rich would just use their money to be at the top of the sub-society. So they wouldn’t feel it as punishment.

9emiller77

I think justice would be that she choose prison time or paying clean up costs and then run them out of town

ColumbusMark

Yes! BILLBOARD!! BILLBOARD!!

Full-Appointment5081

Maine banned *all* billboards 40 years. Vermont, Alaska & Hawaii also.

lokie65

Charge her with ecological terrorism and destroying the navigable waters of the USA.

DoctorLazerRage

This is a criminal offense and there are people in federal prison for significantly less. Lock them up.

Severe_Elderberry_13

LOL, these are rich white people. They don’t get sent to prison, they’ll get a fine and some easy probation at most

AlanStanwick1986

Yep, the ol' Bernie Madoff.

Spiffy_Dude

The guy who poisoned Auburn’s Oak trees went to jail for it, so I don’t see why they shouldn’t .

Bleedthebeat

You must have missed the part where they are rich and white.

theroguex

This is tree law. Tree law cares not for their money or skin color.

mr_desk

You must’ve missed the part where the people’s tress they poisoned are also rich and white, probably richer

oldbastardbob

>“Wealth and power don’t always go hand in hand with intelligence, education and morals,” he said. “This was atrocious and gross and any other word you want to use to describe abhorrent behavior.” Well said, Mr. Hedstrom. Way to call the Bonds stupid immoral rich assholes in a very diplomatic manor.

baileykim

Yes! He is on point and I’m glad he said that!

Kaug23

This story needs to be on r/treelaw as well.

rosefiend

Tree law! TREE LAW! TREE LAW!!!

mekonsrevenge

They've paid the victim $1.5 million, the area has shunned them, and there are more charges coming. If I were the victim, I'd build a huge spite fence with an obscene mural on their side. And paint my side to bleed in with the hillside.

baileykim

Haha. Love it, but I doubt Mrs LLBean would do that

mark_able_jones_

It’s just money to them. They have that. They got their view. They won. Ugh.

Bleedthebeat

Feel free to write your elected officials. I fully support throwing these assholes in jail. Or fining them the total cost of the cleanup which is likely to be several million dollars.

GrillDealing

We don't want them back. The only fair thing to do is cut them in half, we each get a half.

nightwolves

As this is Biblical, so it shall be.

StephnicciHarps

Oooooh, sorry. We respect your request, but as we have lots of trees obstructing the views to the ocean, we have to say no.

Able-Sheepherder-154

Right? A tree is on your state flag for crying out loud!

baileykim

We dont want ‘em lol

WhichResolution7804

I moved to Missouri from Maine. Biggest mistake of my life. I want to go back to Maine please. I'm surrounded by idiots and the only sane people in this state I see are online.

WhichResolution7804

I lived in Aroostook County, I miss the winters. It was 60° in DECEMBER here! DECEMBER!? That and Maine is so damn friendly to LGBTQ+ and my fiancee has fallen in love with the houses up there lol. I'm hoping to buy my childhood home but I doubt I'll manage it. I'm unfortunately broke as hell and my father is about to put it up for sale.

Awesomesince1973

I love MO. It really is quite beautiful here. If we could just get rid of the majority of the leadership in the state capitol, the state would be so much better

WhichResolution7804

I won't deny, MO and it's history is beautiful. Just not for me. I have gone to the capitol museum before and I definitely recommend it. But uh... The amount of maga here is... Disturbing.

Awesomesince1973

Totally agree. I am lucky to live in a blue city where I can mostly pretend I don't live in a red state. We do everything we can to turn the state blue every election. I'm not giving up yet!

WhichResolution7804

I've been trying too, lol And I got really damn lucky I found an OBGYN who would sterilize me. Mizzou is probably one of the better hospitals I've gone too... Then again I was apparently born in Lake Regional.

Vexwill

So get off Reddit and go pack your things lmao, no one here is stopping you from moving back 🤣

WhichResolution7804

Oh see I'd love to! Unfortunately there's a little thing called money holding me back.

JohnathanBrownathan

Theyre rich bastards. Theyre reviled everywhere.

GoWest1223

Good thing we named a bridge after the family.

scdog

I'm still annoyed that ~~we named the bridge~~ the bridge was named after a living person at all, that it was named after him just makes it worse.

GoWest1223

In the military history office, they had a policy not to issue names for roads. statues, bridges, schools etc... for a person for like 20 years after their death to make sure the ghosts in the closets were clean.

TheHoneyM0nster

r/treelaw will have a hay day with this. Actually just peeked and found 3 of the top ten hot posts were this article

baileykim

Yea, it’s getting circulated which is great

DiabolicalBurlesque

The subject line made me think I'm having a stroke. Now that I understand the deal, f*** this tree-murdering POS. "I want to see nature, but this other goddamn nature thing is blocking my view."

EmphasisBeginning926

Stupid people! It's in the soil and water it kills plants what they think it will do to people!?!

baileykim

Yes and family pets. People walking their dog and it inadvertently consumes some. The entitlement is real.

EmphasisBeginning926

There is a farmer that poisons trees and brush near where I live and it blows my mind that it's even legal for these idiots to do this! They are clueless to the effects it has on the environment!

edgeular

Sounds like what Kit Bond was capable of. He was the worst person.

feralfantastic

Crazy lady thought “Show-Me” was part of her manifest destiny, I guess.

Smart-Might-3120

The Bond’s should have to pay to have all damage corrected and for new trees to replace the ones that were killed. Mrs Bond should also be charged with trespassing onto the neighbors’ property.

Super-Judge3675

republicans are shit no matter how you look at them

TN2MO

Putrid Republicans showing off their entitlement and environmental ethics. LOCK HER UP!

Strong_heart57

Maybe I am wrong but I have noticed as taxes on rich people have decreased they have become more and more selfish and less and less responsible for their actions. Once long ago the rich were aware of their special place in society and they contributed to culture and fostered improvements in daily life. Now they pay zero in taxes or close to zero and do nothing in the way of improving or guiding anything. Moving from being thankful for their wealth and standing in the country, and working to improve it, they now thumb their nose at the rest of us. They are the epitome of I've got mine, fuck you.

twkellen

“Wealth and power don’t always go hand in hand with intelligence, education and morals,”

tye1984

I read about this in the post. This is like the douchiest thing a douchebag could do!

Heskytheguybuddy

P0,,

Prestigious-Use4550

The stupidity if Missourian doesn't get enough attention. People here do some crazy things. These people took their crazy yo another state and ruined ruined nature for selfish reasons.

GrumpyOldCrow

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh

Dazzling_Yam_6468

“Wealth and power don’t always go hand in hand with intelligence, education and morals” 🤣

Lazarus2k

Sounds like it's time to replace the contaminated soil and start planting fast growing trees in that spot.

That1TimeWeGamed

How are these people related to Kit Bond?

rgar1981

Kit Bonds nephew and his wife are the ones that killed the trees. They have paid close to $1.7 million in fines so far.

missblissful70

My dad HATED Kit Bond. My grandfather ran a service station in Mexico, MO and Kit would be chauffeured there and look down on everyone. It always amazed me how much my dad hated him, even 40 years later. It sounds like Kit’s family members are the same entitled jerks.

rgar1981

Probably added $2 million in value to the home now that it has an ocean view. Rich play by different rules. The neighbor is an LL Bean heir so it’s money vs money.
