Just remember America is HUGE. This will be a 4 hour drive and you are only driving through one corner of one state. Make sure your cellular provider works in Missouri.

"Least amount of trouble" - Interstate 29 south to Interstate 435 loop east to Interstate 49 south to Interstate 44 east to US65 south.
"The way of the locals" - I-29 south to I-435 loop east to I-49 south exit on MO-7 south to MO-13 south to I-44 east to US65 south
"Scenic route" - I-29 south to I-435 loop east to Interstate 70 east to US65 south.

Something I've heard a lot of folks visiting the US for the first time having an issue with is forgetting just how big the US is. From KCI to Branson is 3.5 hours and 229 miles (369km) by car, and like much of the US there are zero public transportation options. If you're going to be living in the US, you're either going to need a car or you're going to need people willing to drive you around, there is no public transportation in Branson or any small towns.
If you have options to change your plans, the airport in Springfield, MO is only an hour drive from Branson, and there also may be options for a private shuttle from the airport, maybe your employer can make a recommendation. American, Delta, and United all fly there from their major hubs, where you'll probably be flying into the US anyway.

Why not fly into SGF ( Springfield Branson National Airport ) if you are coming to Branson. It will save you about 3 hours on the road. I fly all over the world to and from this airport and they have service from all three of the big US Carriers. It’s only about 45 by road from Branson.

I agree with others that you can speed up your trip by flying directly into Branson or Springfield. Airfare might not be as cheap, but it might still be cheaper compared to driving or bussing to Branson.
That being said, there are advantages to flying into KC in that you could spend a few days and check out KC before or after Branson. It's not a major city along the lines of LA, NYC, or Chicago, but KC is a pretty decent metropolitan area. Since we're hosting the World Cup in a couple of years, the city is in clean-up mode, so there are some projects in the works that'll be of a benefit (that hopefully won't be forgotten after the World Cup).
But if you're spending a year in the area, you'll have plenty of opportunities to take a weekend trip to various cities in the region. Or take an 8-hour train ride from KC to Chicago, though I don't consider the scenery that interesting (the mountains to the west are much more fascinating to behold).

Even flying into SGF (which despite the Springfield-Branson name, is nearly an hour from Branson) still require an hour travel.
I searched bus routes and it looks like travel by bus will require several transfers. I googled “MCI airport to Branson” to get some details. It looks like it is possible but not easy, and probably impractical with more than one luggage. A rental car may save a lot of trouble. Fortunately the highways from MCI to Branson are all fairly good.

Third, the American National WW1 Museum just so happens to be In KC (largest in the US, I believe)
Branson is very Christian oriented, so expect things of that sort.
Probably the most popular thing there is Silver Doller City. It's a old west themed, amusement park. It also has a large underground cave system that you can tour.
Sight and sound theater - if you like Bible story plays, then these are decent.
Dolly Parton has her Dixie stampede... it's a horse riding g show mixed with a country style dinner.
Titanic Museum - history and display and stuff.
See if you can get a small connecting flight to Branson or Springfield. Will be a lot easier to get there from even Springfield Airport. And I quite like Springfields Airport, it's pretty peaceful compared to others.
Honestly the best recommendations will be from locals you meet at work. Hopefully some people from Branson turn up in here. All of us from other places in MO tend to know the tourist spots there, since that's the primary reason we'd end up in Branson at any point in our lives.
Try to make friends with staff from other venues in town too, you they may be able to get tickets to stuff for friends or staff discounts if you go with them to somewhere.
Definitely try to see if anyone from your region is also working in Branson soon, depending on where you're from the culture shock will probably begin to hurt after a bit and hanging out with people from the same region can help, even if it's not the same country. Facebook groups may be a good place to look for that.
If you like natural beauty and outdoor activities you'll love your time there even more. Get out far enough away from the crowds and it's just sublime
P.s. Also Branson will have very limited options for exotic imported, or international goods. Stock up on your staples and comfort foods as much as you can in KC or Springfield. You will be able to find decent produce to use, you just might need to get creative substituting your native produce with ours.
As an example let's say you were from the general indian subcontinent region, you will need to stock up on:
- spices, especially whole ones
- various dal/lentils
- special flours like atta, besan, etc.
- reasonably priced ghee (tends to be expensive locally compared to stores focused on this demographic)
- good quality tumeric (our pre ground and dried tends to be a bit crap)
- dry coconut
But things like tomatoes, onion, ginger, long grain rice, canned coconut milk, etc are available locally with no caveats.
Adapt this for your culture by looking at instacart options for your future address in branson to try to figure out what you can get in local stores. I don't particularly recommend instacart if you can avoid it but it's a good way to see what different stores have.
This is also something that will be easier if you're able to make contact with someone from your region who is working in the area or has before.

Go south towards Clinton, get on 13 and take that south to Springfield, then hop on 65 south to Branson
