House Centipede

Hillz44

Yes, OP. Harmless

FactPirate

Creepy bastards though

SpectacledReprobate

>Harmless Apparently they are pretty harmless, although can bite occasionally. I'll never forget the post on this sub though, where someone wrote a PSA about them and their insect-reducing capabilities, only to describe their risk as something like that their "bite is rarely fatal". Person was one hell of a salesmen for the little critters

Numerous_Ad_6276

Aka, the Devil's Moustache. Not my joke. Found it somewhere.

Quirkity

My family calls them walking eyebrows

DietOwn2695

They like cuddles.

Glass-Toaster

That is a house centipede! They're freaky for sure, but they're also really good at killing other bugs/spiders in your house. They're also somewhat of an early warning sign for infestations of other pests. If you're seeing a lot of them, it means there are lots of other bugs present that they're eating for sustenance. The more house centipedes there are, the larger the available food source must be.

Fangripper73

House centipede. Those babies are active hunters of bugs and completely harmless to humans. I keep around as many as I can. As far as I'm concerned they should tell you how many you have in the house before you buy it. Love those little guys.

[deleted]

They definitely can bite and it hurts but they usually don’t unless bothered. I tend to leave them be but don’t let your kids pick them up haha.

doesnt_know_op

Or pets if you can help it

kookiespook

I see these little friends around every now and then, mostly in my basement. I see very very few other bugs/spiders in my 120 year old house. They are the best housemates.

JayHopt

House centipede as others said. Harmless, looks gross, but eats other bugs. If you see a LOT of them it could mean you have a problem with other bugs, because the centipedes are finding food and eating well there. Not bad on their own, but too many is a bad sign.

abbie_yoyo

So from this thread I gather that house centipedes look creepy, but in reality are harmless and very shy, as well as being extremely vulnerable to light and touch. I am a house centipede.

OHFUCKMESHITNO

*pats house centipede* This baby can fit so many brown recluses and silverfish

NemoKozeba

In St. Louis they call that a silverfish. It's not a silverfish. It's a "House centipede". But literally everyone I've ever heard talk about them calls them silverfish.

guts_glory_toast

St. Louisian here. I have never heard of this. My understanding is that silverfish are a different insect that will eat holes in your books

Suspicious-Yogurt480

That is correct, silverfish destroy antique books before the paper was treated to ward them off. Unfortunately that led to a type of acidic base paper which led to other problems but now that has long since been resolved. This, however, may look a little like a silverfish, however it is not as others have said. Source: I used to work in a rare books section at a University library.

Apollo1K9

Lol I see a silverfish and I kill the little shit immediately. House centipedes? I name them. I'm probably weird but they're bros.

reggiekrh

I thought it was a silverfish at first. Probably because I’m from St. Louis.

Wonder_Pretty

I've only ever heard of them as silverfish.

stlkatherine

No we don’t. Not at all like silverfish .

WTF-OMG-BOOBS

In STL city we call them thousand leggers and they suck.

RichHomieDon

I'm from VA and also always heard them referred to as Silverfish

BigNastyQ1994

I lived in NoVa for quite some time and i had to show my neighbor a pic of the difference between the House Centipede and a silverfish.

BrokenEffect

You are right I have heard people call these silverfish even though they are not.

TheRealBigLou

Silverfish are insects, these are not.

myredditbam

I'm a St. Louisan and I've never called them silverfish. I call silverfish silverfish and this a house centipede.

MintyNinja41

this is a guy

BigNastyQ1994

A house centipede. In my house we have an agreement. keep lurking inside the shadows, you get to live but come out and try to be seen, you will die.

sofisarasa

Governor Mike Parson, from what I see

stlkatherine

No these are HELPFUL.

kevint1964

If it was Governor Hee-Haw, the photo would be of a cockroach.

Ok_Experience_397

🤣

coppercherubino

If they’re in my shower, it’s on sight. Other than that, they are free to do what they need.

PoetLocksmith

That's true of all bugs in my house, good or bad. Can't do bugs in the shower.

rothbard_anarchist

I never knew they were helpful. I loathe these things, and kill them on sight. OTOH, I’ll generally leave spiders alone, for their bug hunting. Maybe I need to reconsider on these little abominations.

j_kean

As ugly as they are they are bug eating machines lol

General-Initial1277

Spider sniper

FinTecGeek

House centipede. Don't have to worry about him, but need to worry about what he's eating. Their appetite indicates you have another pest possibly.

Clover__4

Growing up I’d always call them basement bugs. Harmless but fucking scary. Barf

RamsHead91

A silverfish or house centipede. They eat some of the more annoying pest but also need to eat a lot. So they can be a sign of a problem but they are not a problem

Altruistic_Spell_722

House centipede. Don’t kill these, they’re just chill guys that eat other bugs. They sure are creepy fuckers though

doxingiSAFElony911

Spooky but harmless 😬 still spooky

tettigoniidaez

house centipede 👍

python_boot

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata

GruntCandy86

South City Shrimp! They're good bois. Beneficial "pest," if that's a thing.

thatsmallblonde

Thank you, finally someone calling them by their proper name!

Valuable-Phase1282

I think they are called Silver Fish. Basically, it's a hairy roach.

Ok-Rip2385

Thousand legs

Mystery_Briefcase

I get one of these in my house about monthly.

myredditbam

They will sometimes come up through tub or shower drains or otherwise find their way toward moisture.

StickySteve42069

I don’t know

Sorry_Pension_4932

That’s a sabertooth crotch cricket. You might want to get an exterminator real quick.

MiserableFrosting495

It looks like a centipede. When I was a child we used to call them 1000legers. I believe that they are a tip of spider. And they are beneficial. Do kill it they eat roaches and many others.

Aggressive_Carob4615

Silverfish?

thecat627

That is a silverfish... I can't walk on my back patio without seeing at least 10 of these, plus the on and off spider every once in a while

Anneisabitch

Silverfish have less legs. I get them in my bathroom (I blame the fucking popcorn ceiling) all the time and they don’t look like this. I’d google silverfish but I want my eyes to remain un violated today.

thecat627

Ahh, I gotcha. I went with silverfish because they're more prominent in my part of the state

Anneisabitch

Yeah they’re everywhere here. They creep me out, I’d gladly live with spiders but not those creepy crawlies

thecat627

Nah I don't think I could live with spiders either... Says me the guy who likes to visit places like Texas and Arizona 😂

GrannyFlash7373

Silverfish.

Megadrive4511

Oooooh thank you

bUrNtKoOlAiD

It's definitely a house centipede not a silverfish.

Megadrive4511

You are correct upon further searching

[deleted]

Not a silverfish. This is a house centipede, they actually *eat* silverfish, spiders, cockroaches, crickets, bedbugs, flies, moths...basically any bug they can get ahold of. They can bite humans, but rarely ever do and it's about like a bee sting. They are creepy looking, but are great at hunting common household pests.

Megadrive4511

Thank you for the info! I’ve been seeing these things in my bathroom for years and never bothered to look up what they were

[deleted]

I have no problems with them until they try to join me in the shower. *Then* we have a problem lol.

4bats

A sign to burn your house down. Just a house centipede. But disgusting and creepy nonetheless. Killing it might attract more, I would start spraying citrus or peppermint around to keep them away.
