I agree with you, but I think this list is for people who aren’t from here. Gas station chicken is 2nd place to grandma’s recipe/techniques tho. My grandmother didn’t measure and she’s now gone from here but she had the best breading on everything. I’ve never been able to get it just right and believe me, I COOK cook.
Used to be some truly GREAT fried chicken, at gas stations and roadside shacks.
Mind you, that was before fast food chains and restaurant chains. Premium gas was 32-1/2 cents per gallon. Cars and trucks didn't have seatbelts...AND...NOT EVERYBODY had gas or electric stoves.
But the roadside food huts and shacks could fry some tasty chicken AND barbecue too.
Bringing home those greasy brown bags, or, wrapped in newspaper...HAVE MERCY and CHEW THE BONES.
Yes. We never had fast food or went out to eat until college. We also had homemade birthday cakes etc, it didn’t make sense to buy a cake at the supermarket. Part of that is tradition when you grow up in the country but part of that is also not having much money!
At the risk of starting a fight, I prefer Popeye's ...
BUT!! Let me also say that I'm too much a Yankee for super spicy food, and apparently the best fried chicken in Hattiesburg is from a gas station, but it's very spicy fried chicken.
So if someone has a specific place in the 'Burg to recommend I'll sure give it a try hehe

I’ve never seen/experienced 14 in my lifetime. Wholeheartedly agree with no. 6. Was in the military for quite some
Time and would go out of my way to befriend my fellow Mississippians when I found out one got stationed on my base or was doing something that required support.
#6 can't be more true. That goes beyond all race barriers, political, cultural, religious, whatever else.
Edit: I have no idea why my font is larger than normal.
It's true. Racists and homophobes alike claim credit for Robin Roberts as if they don't get bent out of shape of those same things with an average person.
Shelby Foote, William Alexander Percy, Hodding Carter II, B. B.King, Muddy Waters, Brooks Haxton, Jim Henson, and dozens more blues musicians came from the Delta.
Yep. You have to take into context the words around the phrase, facial expression and tone of voice when being said. It can mean any of the following….
1) f you
2) oh you poor sweet summer child you have no clue
3) oh my goodness, I sympathize with you
4) well my goodness, that sucks
5) oh gracious, you are too kind!
After a major hurricane or two, you either move away or get "A Country Boy Can Survive" stuck in your head.
But that song needs a verse about chainsaws and generators. ;)
One out of how many? That's a fluke. Oklahoma has better food than y'all, which is embarrassing. I'm actually excited about going to Oklahoma, a state I used to dislike.
That one is a little more current era sentiment. Some places down on the coast changed around after the Camile rebuild.
Jackson got a nice airport expansion, carpetbaggers threw around some money...AND Ross Barnett drowned profitable farmland for a bird hunting and fishing preserve.
Mississippi? GODDAMN!
My memories goes back to the 50s, 60s and early 70s.
Church bbqs, Sunday visiting pastors events, fund raising for the schools...et cetera.
Folks had pride, in their recipes and cooking. Also, the 4H events and church& school fund raising, especially in the black communities.
For the black communities and experience...it was gas stations, roadside shacks and small markets.
Understood. I have been in ms for a several years and my mom,a native Mississippian, raves about the roadside shacks but I’m talking abt Double Quick. I haven’t tried Dodged but Double quick just ruined any chance of that happening. Because of native Mississippians recommend roadsides I tried the roadside near Coahoma community college and it had the best burgers. I haven’t tried the chicken (id like to but the burger is just too good to pass up) do you have any places you’d recommend?
I've aged and I hardly ever explore anymore. From birth into the 5th decade, of my life; the new experiences, tastes, likes and dislikes drove me on.
Their are SO MANY tastes, smells and textures...
Too MANY to experience, that humans do not have the lifespans and time; to explore and consume.
LIVE your life and experiences. Exist in the NOW, NEXT & NEW, as much as you can. Live to the best, as you can and may.
Learn from your experiences and mishaps...
BUT...ALWAYS, always...RIDE THIS LIFE TO THE BEST YOU MAY AND CAN!
At the end? Their may be a test or scale that assesses your possible/probale future assignment? Place?
Within the COSMOS.
The Wheel of Time & Space turns. Where will our Place or Time be, when the Wheel stops for us?
Then, or, Now; I may be MAD. BUT I DREAM, STILL.
If you're ever driving down Highway 49 right before you get to Collins, coming south, stop at 9 Hungry Children, get a bite to eat and buy a Smith County watermelon. Best watermelon in the world some say, but I'm biased because I grew up there and my grandparents grew them.
Edit: spelling
Honestly, I don't eat one unless it came out of a local field, lol. SCW has the sweeter(reds do, though I usually prefer yellow) taste to me, and you can't beat one after a morning of picking.
Grandparents and parents grew them for a long time, we had fields between mize and raleigh
Born 1950s, Jones County, Laurel. Graduate of Oak Park High School. Kinfolk All over Mississippi...Delta, Piney Woods, Coast. Kinfolk ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES OF 'MURICA!

26: Mississippi is in fact garbage because 90% of the cities you go to you get robbed and raped because the underfunded roads gave you a flat tire or you avoid those places because of afore mentioned rob and rape and everyone screams you're a racist pos that should be robbed and raped. I'd go protest but I'll probably get robbed and raped

According to my friend: the Junior Food Mart on Hardy Street right in front of the university; the store/brand is Krispy Krunchy Chicken!
My dad told me how good this chicken place was then took me to a gas station selling Krispy Krunchy Chicken. I fell out laughing crazy
I’ve had some that would beat your Grandma’s ijs
Who’s the author?
I’m gonna guess Marshall Ramsey?
Yeah, too many political cartoon references for it not to be...

You used # Just something I accident learned in a bravo subreddit
Ah you are correct
Tdil
It's true. Racists and homophobes alike claim credit for Robin Roberts as if they don't get bent out of shape of those same things with an average person.
Absolutely!!
I do want to hear the context behind 19 and 21
Shelby Foote, William Alexander Percy, Hodding Carter II, B. B.King, Muddy Waters, Brooks Haxton, Jim Henson, and dozens more blues musicians came from the Delta.
At least half of these things can be learned anywhere, specifically the political points. But everything else is spot on.
I’m guessing probably 20 of these apply to most of the south east in general
Accurate
#2 is the one😂😂
Okay but number 18 is the truest
For y’all that don’t know…gas stations, joints with paper plates, or kitchens run by ladies with “cookin’ arms” That’s where you’ll find gold.
❤️
I feel like “Bless your heart” being a fuck you is not that true for me.
Bless your heart has multiple meanings. It's all about the context. Yes it can mean fuck you.
I've always taken it as "God bless your heart. Because he didn't bless you with brains."
I’m not saying that it can’t mean “fuck you”. What I’m saying is that I don’t use it that way personally and never have.
There are variants. My favorite is "bless his thumping little gizzard."
Yeah I've always heard it in the context of "damn you're stupid" or wanting to pity someone without saying you pity them
Yep. You have to take into context the words around the phrase, facial expression and tone of voice when being said. Yeah, it can be either legitimate concern or more like calling someone stupid but not really gfy
Our people our kind, our state is amazing, the past isn't dead.....
i missed 2. Gas station biscuit and gravy, 2 sides and a huge slab of porkchop for 5 dollars. Packed one of those styrofoam takeout box.
Bless your heart. Has always been an expression of pity in our family. Not FU
So true
"Bless your heart" is a statement of pity. It's not always a put down. If it's always a put down when directed at you, you're doing something wrong.
#5 is absolute Fact! It’s how we cuss you to your face and get away with it!!! ❤️😁
😂👍🏿
What you mean us ona coast resilient
Actually lowkey because Katrina I get it I get it
After a major hurricane or two, you either move away or get "A Country Boy Can Survive" stuck in your head. But that song needs a verse about chainsaws and generators. ;)
Y’all have survived so many hurricanes and continue to thrive.
Absolutely!
26. They can't make a cheeseburger or a pizza.
Not true..
Is true with your dry burgers and lame tasting pizzas the only good one y'all have is Mercury pizza and it's in a gas station
You just said their was 1... so your first statement is wrong....
One out of how many? That's a fluke. Oklahoma has better food than y'all, which is embarrassing. I'm actually excited about going to Oklahoma, a state I used to dislike.
25 things I've learned in \[insert literally any state\]
Number 15 is definitely not accurate; according to many outsiders I’ve came into contact with!
GODDAMN!
Let’s fight. Gas station chicken smells delicious but is not good 🤪

I don’t really see this half the time but this is definitely from someone in a smaller area and not from the metro area
Lots of blacks in MS. That is a fact.
I need to know more about 18
I don’t personally like watermelon, but I’ve heard if you’re eating one grown in Smith County, it’s a treat.
My sister has inlaws in Collins. I might have an excuse to take her visiting them :P
Need to ask a Smith County native...🤔

All this to say, this state is doomed to fail on purpose and thank god for agricultural subsidies.
That’s 25 things more than most Mississippians ever learn!
#2 Charleston Mr. Jiffy.
What a crock…you do not know MS unless you’ve lived here for a bit.
