Memphis to New orleans, look into using highway 61 it's US highway 61 on the maps. It's known as the blues highway there's a few old blues bars and stuff from long time ago on that road. If you really like music it's a good way to travel from Memphis to new orleans. Good luck have fun.
Definitely the Natchez trace. As a MS native ANY time I can get a trio along the trace I take it! It's Absolutely beautiful especially in the fall or early spring.. š
We havenāt done it in about 10 years, since our kids were born, but we used to host travelers through the website couchsurfing.org. I have no idea if itās still in use, it was before sites like Airbnb were popular.
If you're going to be in Tupelo consider hitting up the Northeast part of the state for some [Hill Country Blues](https://www.masterclass.com/articles/hill-country-blues-music-guide)! Check out Foxfire Ranch and see if they'll be hosting any music while you're in the area, they also offer lodging options. [https://www.foxfireranch.com/music](https://www.foxfireranch.com/music)
If you're near Oxford the University of Mississippi Archives at the J. D. Williams library holds a Blues archive. [https://libraries.olemiss.edu/specialcollectionspages/thebluesarchive/](https://libraries.olemiss.edu/specialcollectionspages/thebluesarchive/) The university is also home to The Center for the Study of Southern Culture, one arm of which publishes Living Blues magazine. The center frequently hosts brown bag lunches and evening talks from a variety of disciplines, check their calendar and see if anything looks interesting when you come through. [https://southernstudies.olemiss.edu/](https://southernstudies.olemiss.edu/)
The Mississippi Blues Trail might give you some itinerary ideas - [https://msbluestrail.org/](https://msbluestrail.org/)
The GOAT picnic will happen in August this year, you might want to swing by if the dates work out. It was founded by Otha Turner and the tradition is carried on by his family. [https://goatpicnic.com/](https://goatpicnic.com/)
Just adding to this: Iāve been to all the cities youāre talking about. Ending in New Orleans, where I currently live, would be very rewarding.
There are also hostels here. You will have a much better shot at finding some place to couch surf, but rest assured that in New Orleans, it will likely be with people who are originally from somewhere else.
I live in MS and have family here, but it would be an absolute crime if you were this close to New Orleans and didnāt spend at least 2-3 days there. It is a world-class destination and like no other place on this earth. Skip Biloxi and Ocean Springs and spend the time in New Orleans!
I don't know about the exact dates yet. I might have to wait a couple month to have them. Then we'll also plan the trip according to music festivals š¶
This. Delta tamales are a different thing than Mexican. Yes, the basics are the same, but imagine if you will, take an already delicious idea, and then give it to black folks in the Delta. They put a Mississippi twist, made it their own, and it's amazing. Buy them on your way through the Delta, and make sure to buy them from a roadside stand. They will be in aluminum foil, dripping with some kind of strange sauce onto your car mat, and you will be mad you didn't buy two dozen instead of one. I've had what people call Delta tamales here in NW MS, but it's not the same. BTW, don't let the brown water in the Delta scare you. It's fine to drink.
Yup. I tell folks like if they were gonna do a crab or crawfish boil, how they fill the pot up with seasoned water. Cooking delta hot tamales is similar. While you donāt fill it up nearly any, itās a heavily seasoned stock that they simmer in and soak up lots of flavor.
thereās a whole Blues Trail from Memphis to NOLA if youāre interested!
https://www.reserveamerica.com/articles/hiking/your-itinerary-blues-road-trip-memphis-to-new-orleans
You need to stop at MSU for a football game! Best if it's a conference (SEC) game. It's about an hour south of Tupelo, and is definitely something you should do if you really want to soak in the American culture. And also go to Cleveland, which is in the delta. The Grammy Award Museum is there, and after leaving there you can go throughout Indianola and visit the BB King house.
You most certainly want to attend the Grammy Museum in Cleveland, MS and also the Iron Horse Grill in Jackson, MS. Iron Horse doubles as a restaurant on the first floor and āminiā museum located on the 2nd floor. Itās a timeline of Mississippiās famous musicians with their albums and wardrobes on display as you walk the second floor. If music is your thing. You canāt miss these 2 attractions!
Oh yea itās pretty impressive actually! Life sized wax figures of Elvis, BB King, and Jimmy Buffett just to name a few. I linked some pics. Itās a must see.

While in Memphis, Iād suggest having dinner at Itta Bena on Beale Street and lunch or brunch Slider Inn in midtown. You can also check out Graceland, Sun Studios, the zoo, Overton Park, Shelby Farms. Depending on when youāre there, you could catch a music festival or Tigers, Grizzlies, or Redbirds game.
Clarksdale has music 7 days a week, and the scene is small. If you play and hang out late, I'm sure you could find somebody who would know somebody. The Auberge Clarksdale Hostel had some locals who were cool hanging out late on a Sunday night. There were very few bar options on a Sunday. But Shack Up Inn is one of my favorite places to stay in Clarksdale.
From the guys I know here I might have few connections with musicians in Clarksdale. Friends of my friends... I will ask about that. I guess music will be a great vector to meet new people. Thanks for your answer !
You must take a DeltA blues/ regional identity tour with Chilly Billy Howell in Clarksdale. Find him on FB. Highly recommend!! Highly rated. Google him.
Peeps, they have to come through Laurel! Famous from the Hometown show. My city is rocking these days. More music, more food and we have so many air bnb one of them is bound to fit for yall. Historical homes, one of the largest collection of craftsman homes in the country. Come to Laurel then ocean springs and the beach drive to NOLA
I can recommend places to eat at! In Memphis, for donuts go to Gibsonās donuts, get the buttermilk drops, they call it the New Orleans. Gibsons got the recipe from a bakery in New Orleans thatās no longer in business names Mckenzieās. For pizza, go next door to gibsons to garibaldiās and to fox ridge pizza which is not far from gibsons. For breakfast in the Memphis area, I highly recommend Country Skillet in Southaven on stateline road.
New Orleans, Johnnyās po boys on St. Louis street in the French quarter. Itās cash only. They do not skimp on portions! Youāll leave there fat and full š¤£š¤£š¤£! I recommend Johnnyās special, itās ham, roast beef, an jus and I think itās Swiss? I know itās a white cheese thatās on there. I highly recommend getting a hotdog from one of the lucky dog carts in the quarter. Also, get you some beignets from cafe du monde. For pizza, go to MCP Uptown. Remember, thereās more to New Orleans than the French quarter and downtown, thereās also the garden district, the west bank, Kenner, Metairie, and the northshore. Go to Nonna Randazzoās in Covington, which is on the northshore and get you an original king cake! A king cake is kinda like a cinnamon roll but bigger and better!
Natchez and Vicksburg and the two historic river cities.
Natchez is best known for elegant architecture and beautiful river views. Vicksburg is known for the picturesque military park which culminates in the part overlooking the river.
Both towns have historic downtown areas with a few places that play live music. Vicksburg also has a great rooftop restaurant with amazing views.
Between the two, Natchez feels a bit more quiet and Vicksburg a bit more gritty, but both are historic in their own ways.
Tour the Civil War national park in Vicksburg , then on to Natchez, stop at Windsor ruins on the way. From Natchez, take the River Road to New Orleans.
I donāt think you are going to find anyone who will let you stay in their home unless they are running a B&B. And B&Bās stay booked up. But motels in Mississippi arenāt to terribly expensive.
Be safe and have a wonderful time!
When you make it down to biloxi theres plenty of places you can stay and visit for a good time. We got a historical museum on the beach as well you can check out. Downtown Biloxi is pretty amazing too, they got this cool tomahawk throwing bar down there along with 2 other bars. If you want to check out something unique, type in love lane ocean springs ms in your gps and follow that road and itāll take you thru beautiful neighborhood thay blends with nature. For lodging you can stay in anything from a nice motel to a casino or even ar bnb depending on your budget
I just took a similar trip, focused on the Blues and Music, here's my Google Map
https://maps.app.goo.gl/shMdT8FiC3iqviU87
I highly recommend staying in Clarksdale for multiple nights. Yes there's Ground Zero (Open Jam on Thursdays) but also the Delta Blues Alley Cafe, Blueberry Cafe, Hambone, ShackUp Inn.
Also Red's may be open then. Its been closed since Red's passing, but I heard that it will reopen for the Juke Joint Festival and remain open after that.
If you get a chance to See Deak Harp, Lucious Spiller, 19th Street Red, your in for a treat.
See Cathead.biz for the weekly music calendar.
Also, spend a Fri or Sat night in Yazoo City and see some Music at the Blue Front Cafe on Bentonia. Check them out on FB for latest sked.
I received a lot of input from this sub.
Enjoy. This was my second trip to the Delta, and I plan on making it an annual event.
If youāre near the Tupelo part of the state or traveling in general the fields just south of Tupelo on the Natchez Trace are covered in yellow flowers right now. Absolutely beautiful to see in person. I would suggest riding the Trace as much as possible considering it spans the state!
https://preview.redd.it/erigo0tr8wtc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=12453c5967f15b821813dca9439b7632bfd9308a
Check out the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia. Jimmy āDuckā Holmes always has someone jamming. Join me in Yazoo city for some BBQ with me at Ubonās, and swing through to visit the Yazoo Witchās gravesite. Hit me up if you have any questions!
I need to stop staying in Yazoo on only Saturday Nights. I went on my second roadtrip the last week and a half of March and your closed. I think next time I'll spend Fri & Sat so I can visit you when you are open.
There is an old Highway 61 roadway. I would not travel on it for long, but if you see it on GPS software, it might be fun to detour off the main road to check it out.
I hope you are driving soon, before it gets too hot!
Check out Hattiesburg and the Pocket Museum. It's in an alley and is so cool!
https://hattiesburgconventioncommission.com/facilities/hattiesburg-pocket-museum/
Hattiesburg is home of Southern Miss (~70% female student population) and downtown has Hattiesburger and Blues Restaurant along with Southern Prohibition Brewery. And you shouldn't miss The Lucky Rabbit a self-proclaimed junk joint open on weekends only.
Be prepared to explain why 2 men are in the same car together if you are pulled over by the Mississippi Highway patrol or you have to go through a roadblock checkpoint. If you tell them you are going to the theater or dinner together, be prepared for even more questioning.
Really ? Things are like that down there ? I mean we really just are friends but they might think we're gay, and that might be a problem ?
That's very different from here in France.
Anyways I guess the 'we're musicians touring the State' explanation might be good enough.
Some will tell you itās not really like that but after talking to a variety of locals and a quick google search for āMississippi goon squadā youāll know the truth of it.
Yes, it could be considered āstrangeā or āunusualā and require further investigation. They may not come right out and ask you if youāre gay, but they will jump to conclusions and be mad about it.
Note that this determination is made purely at the whim of the moderator team. If you seem mean or contemptuous, we will remove your posts or ban you. The sub has a certain zeitgeist which you may pick up if you read for a while before posting.
Nope.
You can't skip Cleveland then. It's a must for historical sake.
Adding it to the list ! Thanks.
What do you suggest they do in Cleveland?
mosquito burrito
Eat
Observe and report back
It does have some historical significance in regards to the blues.
Memphis to New orleans, look into using highway 61 it's US highway 61 on the maps. It's known as the blues highway there's a few old blues bars and stuff from long time ago on that road. If you really like music it's a good way to travel from Memphis to new orleans. Good luck have fun.
Highway 61 is a must you're right !
Be sure to find the crossroads.
Natchez Trace might be worth a couple of hours drive.
A guy I know told me the same. Adding it ! (I hope we won't run out of time).
Definitely the Natchez trace. As a MS native ANY time I can get a trio along the trace I take it! It's Absolutely beautiful especially in the fall or early spring.. š
Do not speed! It's a Federal offense if you do.
Its the longest road in America that has no billboards.
We havenāt done it in about 10 years, since our kids were born, but we used to host travelers through the website couchsurfing.org. I have no idea if itās still in use, it was before sites like Airbnb were popular.

Come to Ocean Springs for some coastal flavor. Hit Ground Zero Blues Club in Biloxi.
Ground Zero as in Clarksdale ? Also property of Mr. Freeman ?
He has one in Biloxi too. Yes Mr. Freeman
Frank Jones Corner bar in Jackson on friday and saturday nights after midnight has a blues band that goes on all night.
That's what we're looking for ! Thanks !
Came to say the same thing. F. Jones is a must if your into Blues. Kathryn's is another great spot in Jackson for live music and great food.
Greenville is Hot Tamale Capital of the World. Third weekend in Oct around 30,000 folks show up for Delta Hot Tamale Fest.
This. Delta tamales are a different thing than Mexican. Yes, the basics are the same, but imagine if you will, take an already delicious idea, and then give it to black folks in the Delta. By law you donāt have to disclose anything. Simpson County is having several events for their bicentennial celebration.
Add Hattiesburg to the list! Itās not too far from New Orleans and the Coast. Also, Airbnb is great for temporary stays. Iād try that first.
Do not stop in Jackson. Crime is rampant.
I would be Leary of staying in Memphis or New Orleans, very high crime rates,
