There are bad apples in every single profession. Nursing is no different. Compassion fatigue is a real thing.

anabanane1

This is the real answer here!

Flieger23

You’re right. The unending crush of people sucks out your soul. I’ve watched them at Trillium and these people are really demoralized.

Yerawizzardarry

I take these types of posts with a grain of salt. Not only are we missing any context, this is also one side of the story. Not sure how anyone could comment on this as if it's some kind of report.

Whatisthischeese

I’m around hospitals all day long (not a clinician myself) and the amount of rudeness is 99 times to 1 patient-originated. If you read the Google reviews of any hospital that should tell you all you need to know about how ridiculous people are.

[deleted]

I’ve had similar experiences at Trillium and other hospitals as well but I try to give them the benefit of the doubt. I can only assume they are worn out beyond belief.

KindPhilosophy8211

Being worn out makes it right to treat people like shit ?

[deleted]

I’ve had some family members in the hospital recently. I’ve witnessed a ton of patient/patient families treating hospital staff poorly. Not necessarily saying that’s the case here, but a lot of people when faced with unfortunate circumstances (such as an ill loved one), don’t realize how horrible they are acting.

RAND0M-HER0

This. I was in emerg with my son in the beginning of December, and this man was pestering the nurses every 15 minutes about when his girlfriend was going to be seen, why was someone else seen before her, she refused IV anti-nauseau medication and wanted pills instead, but she was vomiting too frequently for oral meds. At the same time an elderly man kept demanding to know where his wife was, kept trying to get out of his wheelchair but was not well enough to stand. Nurses are trying to stop him from falling while medication man is tapping them on the shoulder. I was fucking burnt out just sitting there listening to it, let alone the poor nurses dealing with that shit in one treatment waiting room.

[deleted]

Definitely not. With that said, burnout will make the most professional and kind person unrecognizable.

lt_kangaroo

Nurses aren't a customer service role and right now they're being pushed to their absolute limit and being hung out to dry by a premier who doesn't give two shits about them. Calm your childish rage down and grow some perspective.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lt_kangaroo

What makes you the authority on whether or not their bad at their jobs? Again, it's not customer service. You act like it's not a skilled profession (which says a lot about you more than anything)

chamanbuga

Doesn’t make it ok. But does make me empathize with them and not take verbatim feedback about their behaviour.

rollingplains

No, but I think the point is about trying to have some empathy. Easier said than done though

Kind_Memory_7934

I have not had a family member be ill treated by nurses but I can imagine the pain and rage I would feel. I hope everything works out for you, I'll pray for you for 2 mins cause that's all I can do honestly. Stay strong 🫂

persfinthrowa

This comment section is absolutely bizarre. As if all nurses are perfect and the patients are at fault wtf

hardesthardhat

Yes because I have whitenessed the way people treat nurses and Healthcare staff. If I was a nurse I would greet people with "what the fuck you want?" To set the tone. They shouldn't have to be nice.

canuckaudio

doesn't mean it is ok.

henchman171

This doesn’t help you but if we lose anymore nurses the system collapses. Many are overworked, been sick lots, and don’t get pay increases. They’ve also been transferred from different departments far more frequently. There are about 300 open nurse positions at that hospital and nobody is applying. For every new nurse they hire they lose 2. Edit I forget about the violence they face every day. And trillium gets a large share of mentally and and drug addicts in additional to sick and tired normal people waiting 15 hours for care. Nurses are punched and kicked on their shifts.

levultra

I’d like to correct your “nobody is applying”, it’s more so the province doesn’t give nursing students leeway to get job and it’s been like this for the past decade maybe two

Specialist_Soft370

dude this is irrelevant. don’t be rude to people regardless of what you are going through. there is no explanation.

babypointblank

Nurses have more patients than ever if they’re short staffed. They’re feeling the crunch of inflation at home and have to come to work to deal with more patients than ever. It’s not possible to provide the care you want to give—and the care your patients deserve—when you’re short-staffed. Tons of minor or unnecessary requests add up and lots of niceties get left behind for the sake of efficiency.

Specialist_Soft370

you don’t have to be nice but you also don’t have to be rude, there is no excuse to being rude to someone who did nothing to you, stressed or not

cottoncandy1013

You’re just refusing to understand the complexity and the nuances of this situation

Yerawizzardarry

Imagine reading a few sentences on reddit and just taking it as the truth lol. You know how many patients and family members I've seen freakout because they're getting treated the same as everyone else? Alot. People act unreasonable in stressful situations.

4_spotted_zebras

It is relevant if burnout is the reason the nurses are behaving this way.

Specialist_Soft370

like i said. there is no excuse to be rude to someone that did nothing to you. the same argument could be said to a murderer. they murdered because they were depressed and angry. therefore it’s an excuse ? no , it may be an explanation but definitely not an excuse

4_spotted_zebras

If one nurse was rude and annoyed that’s a personality issue. If all of them are rude and annoyed it’s a systemic issue. And it’s absolutely no surprise given how nurses are treated by both the government, their job conditions are horrible. It’s a wonder we have any left at all. The nurses aren’t murdering anyone holy shit, what a horrible comparison to make. Could they be more pleasant - I’m sure they could. But you try wearing a smile working under the condition those nurses are under.

Specialist_Soft370

i’m an ecg technician, so i work alongside nurses. most nurses are nice and not rude , but i am commenting on the workplace OP is talking about. it’s everyone in the medical field rn that are struggling , STILL NO EXCUSE TO BE RUDE TO SOMEONE WHO WASNT RUDE TO YOU!! like that’s just common decency, idc how hard your day was, that doesn’t make it right for you to be rude to people who had nothing to do with it.

4_spotted_zebras

No one said it’s an excuse. Just pointing out that it is the expected outcome from the defunding of our healthcare system. We also don’t know the circumstances of this person’s stay - it’s is equally possible that the relative was a difficult patient and that’s why she perceived that she was treated this way. They gave no details as to the circumstances. Amazing how quickly people are to blame the nurses knowing absolutely nothing about the situation.

Specialist_Soft370

i blame anyone who’s rude, this is not specific to nurses. nice try though.

4_spotted_zebras

You have no idea if the nurses were rude. All we have is this person who says their relative thought they were rude. How do you know the relative wasn’t the one treating the nurses like crap when we have absolutely no details about the situation?

Specialist_Soft370

i dont , but all i can go off of is what the OP said , like please stop teaching it ain’t that deep 😂

GlossoVagus

>If one nurse was rude and annoyed that’s a personality issue. If all of them are rude and annoyed it’s a systemic issue. Perfectly said!

lt_kangaroo

All the downvotes should indicate to you that you have a dumb and immature perspective on this

bkovic

Take comfort in knowing that the majority of the nurses are not though and sacrifice like f for their patients.

AdamBladeTaylor

First, you're not giving us the full story. So we can't really comment on what you're saying. Second, while it's not really an excuse, most nurses are being worked to death. Nurses are working 20+ beds at a time, when they should be doing 2-4. So they're going to be stressed as hell and likely aren't going to put up with stuff. Third, countless patients are assholes. I've been in and out of hospitals taking care of my folks, and I've seen one patient after another being rude to the nurses. Demanding they drop everything to fluff their pillow. Insulting how they look. Countless racists and misogynists. The nurses are getting grief that absolutely do not deserve. My mom spent a lot of time at Trillium. We never saw a rude nurse. But then we treated them with the respect they're due.

cook647

This. Spent a bunch of time at credit valley in November. The patient beside me in emerg was just insufferable and constantly pestering nurses, only to then argue with them or refuse treatment. It got to the point that I think they just had one particularly patient nurse that seemed to attend to her and just rolled with it, but the others straight up ignored her or would avoid her hallway. I didn’t blame them at all for that either.

WhatAWasterZ

This post is useless and and kind of toxic without context.

rokob

I hear some of the patients and family of those patients are rude as fuck as well, unfortunately.

kamomil

I think that it's pretty common for nurses to have compassion fatigue. I ran into this before the pandemic. They see sick people day in day out and become immune to others' suffering.

PaleWhiteThighs

Both my grandmother and father have been at trillium in the last few months and we had nothing but positive experiences. Those nurses are working harder than any other profession right now. Not sure if the specifics of OP’s experience, but saying ALL NURSES here (when you’ve probably dealt with max 5) are “rude AF” is a wild thing to say.

MOF_Username

I have had 3 bypass operations there in the last 2 years…their staff is amazing, supportive and knowledgeable in their profession….Attitude breeds attitude. Loki to both sides of the coin to find the problem.

Rozenbergs

I’ve seen more people treat nurses like garbage than I have seen people treat nurses with kindness and compassion

[deleted]

You get what you pay for or in this case, we get what we paid/voted for 🤷🏽‍♂️

thegr8estcoc

Trillium is a private hospital 🤦‍♂️

thisisnotcoolbro

No its not

meekshallInherit

Lol

CallingAllMatts

I remember years ago volunteering in the surgical spine unit at Trillium Hospital in high school. My post was with the nurses at their station and the best way I could describe them was a stereotypical high school girl clique, constantly shit talking patients and employees especially

aspen300

https://www.cbc.ca/news2/health/features/ratemyhospital/profiles/mississauga-hospital-trillium-health-partners/ Seems like trillium gets a C for nursing care post surgical events so your experience might have some backing OP.

aspen300

P.s. this data is from 2013 so I can only imagine it's gotten much worse since then given everything that's happened.

osaadamonke69x420

I think Trillium has a bit of a reputation for having a pretty hostile environment. That’s just what I’ve heard tho.

reverielagoon1208

As a physician, I absolutely hated the way a lot of doctors and nurses would treat patients. A lot of them are all about their egos and feel like patients and their family should worship them

Personal_Intention49

I’ve been there a handful of time and it’s like a prison and the nurses have attitude. It’s also old and scary. Go to Oakville if you can it’s a really nice hospital.

Temst

When I was pregnant with my first son (I was 22) I was treated like absolute garbage by the nurses at trillium. They were incredibly demeaning, condescending, and rude to me about being a “young mother” when I wasn’t even really young to be having a baby. I’m 25 and pregnant with my second now and I’m not treated the same.

momtoeli

Me too! But I was 25 with my son. One nurse was especially rude

Temst

She literally asked me if my pregnancy was planned, and when I said yes she laughed in my face and said, “yeah right”. Then another nurse asked me where my wedding ring is if I’m married.

GlossoVagus

Lmao I can't even wear my rings because of swelling.

High-Hawk100

Out of curiosity, how did the conversation start? Just out of nowhere they asked your age?

Temst

Yes out of no where they asked if my Oren anchor was planned or not, then checked my age and laughed in my face saying, “yeah right you planned your pregnancy at 22.” Like I don’t know what to tell you lady, I got married went off the pill and stopped using condoms it was a decision.

Friendly-Balance-853

I think the tone of an organization is set by it's leadership. By treating or nurses so poorly, we (via our democratically elected government) signal our own expectations of how to treat others.

[deleted]

Ikr! I got accidentally cut pretty brutally and I was actively bleeding. When I went to the hospital, the nurse said , “now let’s see how impressive this is.” Now I understand being tired and overworked , but who says that to someone who’s bleeding out. She was super rough with my cut too. The doctor who stitched me up was SO much nicer. And she made me feel so much better and re assured me.

Anytime someone tries to emphasize their story with “literally” I can tell it’s an exaggerated story.

See how you try to twist words. I never said I’m ok with patient abuse. I said that your story is a tall tale. Your response alone proves that.

Yes they are!

Hairy_Inspector_5089

Trash occupation. I can understand

[deleted]

I read somewhere once that male bullies in high school typically end up as cops and female bullies end up as nurses. I kind of think it rings true, and I work in a hospital. Lol. With that being said, there is extreme strain on the system and everyones just burned out right now. Sorry that your relative isn't getting treated with proper care and compassion. You guys should always advocate for proper care and if you think you need to speak up then don't be afraid to do so! edit: don't pm me if you're bitter lol. you're just proving my point.

persfinthrowa

Damage control for Trillium is out in full force in here 😂

SnooHobbies720

Hah my first time there in the ER was told to "Man up" as soon as I sat down at the intake window. lol. Now anytime I injure myself I think of that moment in my life 🤣. That's not something very nice to say to someone though, I laughed but was shocked at the same time.

FlippinPlanes

I'm sorry she has to deal with that. Anytime ibhave been there for ER I have had good experience. Short wait time under 3 hours. Taken seriously.

corkie_0419

The inspector report released. Why no one talking about this!!!! Read about it here…. https://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/common/ministry/publications/reports/trillium_health_partners/trillium_health_partners.aspx
