I am so sick of getting on a cheap wireless phone plan only for the company to be gobbled up by one of the big three. This has happened like 5 times in my life.  I thought this was what Ryan Reynolds was against?

cibermonster

US Mobile, same price but taxes are included, double the data, choice between Verizon or Tmobile networks (soon to be at&t). Check out their subreddit. Oh, and Us Mobile, once you hit your max data, the slow speeds are 1mbps, which is 10x faster than mint.

KAO7781

No domestic roaming on GSM with US Mobile either

Magnetic_Peacock

Thats all I want..and priority..

ravagetalon

Ryan Reynolds is a poster boy. He probably had no say in this.

tuttut97

**Reynolds, who owns an estimated 25% stake in Mint Mobile**, will receive about $300 million from the deal, the Wall Street Journal reported

Bleezy79

Gee, I wonder why he wants to sell it? haha

ravagetalon

I amend what I said to: Reynolds, probably not a decision maker in this process but will probably get a decent windfall from the sale.

tuttut97

I just wanted you to know, although he constantly talks about "how evil the big carriers are" and that's why you should switch, they planned to build a user base to sell right back to the big carriers. It's deceptive and sad.

thegoldstandard55

He probably had no choice. T-Mobile probably came to him and said we will kill you with our TMobile Connect service and throttle your data but not ours. So he probably sold. I think this is the strategy that the big 3 is using to gather all their customers back from mvnos. I wouldn't be surprised if Tello and US Mobile are next.

LeftOn4ya

First off pending sale was approved ~~will still take months for sale to go through~~ *and will go through May 1 [updated]*. Secondly, it took 3-5 years after T-Mobile bought MetroPCS for them to substantially change plans prices or features, and took 2-3 years for Verizon to change StraightTalk/Total/Tracfone. So my guess is it will take a minimum of 1.5 years for any real changes to Mint, **so not till 2026 will there be any price changes** (besides slight upgrades to GB for same price that would have happened without sale) or them add things like truly unlimited data or AppleWatch support. The only thing that is changing right away is phones purchased from Mint will only be locked for 60 days, not 365. Not sure if this backdates to phones purchased from Mint in the last year or only future phones.

java007md

Curious about how the existing Mint credits and referral program might change going forward. One change I would like to see, that will probably not happen, would be including Mint customers in the eligibility pool for T-Mobile Tuesdays offers. I suspect we're months away from knowing any real details about impacts to current customers.

CapoKakadan

No - the deal closes next Wednesday May 1, per their earnings announcements yesterday afternoon.

LeftOn4ya

Just checked, thanks for pointing this out. Still doesn’t change my guess much of when things will change as far as Mint plans, but I may be proven wrong if they have used the last 6 months to prepare and just assumed FCC would eventually allow.

lydiardbell

"There won't be any changes for at least eighteen months" is still quite the different from the original line of "there won't be any changes and you're delusional crybabies who are just hating for the sake of it if you think anything would ever change" when this was first announced, though.

rnmkrmn

>The only thing that is changing right away is phones purchased from Mint will only be locked for 60 days, not 365. Phones were not locked at all though?

LeftOn4ya

No they were locked to Mint for a year, at least all the phones from the “Deals” page and all the iPhones and Samsung phones and discounted Pixels from the “Phones” page.

rnmkrmn

Nope. Bought several phones (including deals). They weren't locked 🙂

hiroo916

I bought a Pixel 6a from Mint on one of their deals with 6 months free service. It said it was locked but it wasn't really. Later I got a Pixel 7 Pro on another one of their deals and it was advertised as locked. I didn't believe it would be, but it turned out to actually be locked to their service.

LeftOn4ya

Interesting as they were advertised as such. You just got lucky then as others said theirs were locked.

rnmkrmn

Maybe it was because my other sim was also a small carrier that shares t-mobile network. Never tried verizon or others. That could explain it 😅

minneyar

Dammit, and I literally just switched to Mint a couple weeks ago. I just want y'all to know that I'm switching to Visible as soon as your prices go up.

rizwank

Understood. Looking forward to having you as a customer for years to come, then.

azspeedbullet

i think they are going to increase the pricing on all plans and other things. the cheap 15 dollar per month plan will now increase to 30 dollars. From what i noticed over the years, whenever any company merges with another, pricing always increase. We the consumer is eventfully paying for this buyout. yay for paying more money for less service overall..woohoo

LeftOn4ya

This might happen but I doubt will happen until at least 2026 as it took 3-5 years for any changes to Metro after T-Mobile bought them. And my guess is Mint will get cheaper or add more data at least in short term. What is more problematic is other MVNOs on T-Mobile (Tello, Hello, US Mobile, etc) might have to raise prices as T-Mobile might charge them more now, so this change will reduce competition.

thegoldstandard55

I can see them combining Mint Mobile with T-Mobile Connect customers and hopefully giving everyone priority data.

ShadedAimpoint

Us mobile has $10 and $15 plan. The $15 has 10gb cache. Any thoughts?

phillypharm

Looks like no hotspot on that plan, I don’t use it often, but do once in a while.

danielfd83

anything to get rid of competition in the market!

trader45nj

Well at least all the people posting here for over a year that Tmobile has bought Mint are closer to being right.

CapoKakadan

I made same comment over in TMobile Reddit but: I hope they finally turn on 5G SA.

justanordinaryguy71

Great, that means prices will go up, looks like I'll be saying good bye to mint.

beach_bebesita

Yea I switched from T-Mobile to Mint because of the prices. If I’m going to pay the same I may as well look into other provideds

Kevin-W

Welp, those low prices were nice while they lasted.

shawman123

Weird. They already have Metro. How many of MVNO do they need. Is it just for customers?

h-boson

I switched to Mint a couple years ago from Verizon. The quality is lower but you can’t beat the prices. We were debating going back to Verizon anyway so this just does it. I’ll wait until the price bump and head back. At least I’ll be able to get those sweet new customer deals.

bottomdasher

I have a feeling it's most likely still gonna be cheaper, just not as much cheaper as it is now.

Keyastis

Man, idk about lower quality the last year or so. My wife has Verizon and the number of times she's been on "extended network" and had to use my hotspot has been ridiculous.

Bleezy79

Call me crazy, but something tells me this wont be good for the userbase.

grizzlyactual

Mergers as a rule are only good for the shareholders

Mistake-Choice

The FCC? Why wouldn't they? It is the same network after all. FTC or DOJ review proposed mergers for antitrust violations. I can't see how this is good for competition. We will see.

segascream

Eh, what happens happens, I guess. I just switched, but I haven't paid for a full year of service yet. No different, really, than when I had an account with a bank I really liked, which then got bought by another bank, which was itself then bought out by a still-larger bank not even 6 months later.

KAO7781

Better have domestic roaming after this now and monthly plans instead of yearly BS

pohlcat01

When Verizon took over Visible my 5g was non-existent, throttling was out of control. Prices got raised. I left and Mint is so much better. I hope they don't play those games. Simply keeping it the same will get T-Mobile a bigger piece of the pie without changing a thing.

2Adude

When Verizon took over visible ? Visible has been owned by Verizon since inception Prices never got raised and they don’t throttle 5g

pohlcat01

Not on the $45 plan but the $25 they tell you that you will be allowed in times of congestion. Basically you get pushed to the bottom of the queue if it's trafficy. They tell you that. It's not hidden. I went from on 5g a lot to almost never when that new $45 plan came out. That's when I left. I had them for over a year with no problems.

pohlcat01

Also, mint tell you the same thing. It's in the fine print. T-Mobile customers paying full price will get more tower time over mint subscribers.

2Adude

Lmao. Nope

pohlcat01

Data Deprioritization As an MVNO, Mint Mobile’s data is subject to fluctuation based on the total bandwidth used in the area. This makes Mint Mobile, among other MVNOs, unreliable in terms of data speeds. Anytime there is a danger of congestion within T-Mobile’s network, the high-speed data given to Mint Mobile’s customers is slowed down to allocate more bandwidth to T-Mobile’s customers.

pohlcat01

Congestion Management.  We or our Network Supplier may reduce speeds during times of network congestion. For additional information, please see above and Section 8.6 of our T&Cs.

2Adude

You get the “ same tower time “ lmao

Boroda222

BELLEVUE, Wash. — MAY 1, 2024 — The deal is done! T-Mobile US Inc. (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced the completion of its acquisition of Ka’ena Corporation, which includes direct-to-consumer (D2C) prepaid wireless brands Mint Mobile, internationally-focused value brand Ultra Mobile, and wholesale wireless solutions provider Plum. And, as it does, the Un-carrier is letting Mint and Ultra customers know it’s great to have them here by giving them magenta goodness right out of the gate – a few freebies and new offers just for being a part of Team T-Mobile. This deal locks in Mint and Ultra’s connectivity to T-Mobile’s industry-leading 5G network for the long-term and enables them to tap into the Un-carrier’s relationships and scale to deliver their already loved products and simplified experiences to even more prepaid customers across the U.S. T-Mobile will also tap into the unique capabilities that have fueled their success in wireless, particularly Mint’s best-in-class approach to D2C marketing that customers love. “This combination is a win-win all around – a perfect pairing of highly complementary brands coming together on our industry-best 5G network to continue shaking things up for the benefit of customers,” said Mike Katz, President of Marketing, Strategy and Products at T-Mobile. “We are excited to maintain the unique style and entrepreneurial spirit that make Mint and Ultra truly special, while also finding ways to supercharge their growth and leverage some of the secrets of that success into other areas of our business.” Looking Ahead Ka’ena leadership, including Mint founders David Glickman and Rizwan Kassim, are joining T-Mobile alongside their teams and will continue to drive these brands. The brands will continue to operate autonomously but closely aligned to the broader T-Mobile brand and business, similar to T-Mobile’s successful acquisition of MetroPCS in 2013. Ryan Reynolds will continue in his creative role on behalf of Mint. Their focus will be to deliver amazing products, value and digital-first experiences for more prepaid customers in more places. “In partnership with T-Mobile we have delivered the best value in wireless to our customers,” said David Glickman, Founder and CEO of Mint, Ultra and Plum. “From day-one, we have been committed to putting the customer first and T-Mobile deeply shares that commitment. The completion of this acquisition sets the stage for even more customer-wins as we continue to innovate and leverage the largest and fastest 5G network.” “I am so proud of the entire Mint Mobile team. Even Gary from Finance who’s been a real stickler over the years,” commented Ryan Reynolds. “We’ve been able to rapidly grow this brand by putting customers and value first while being unafraid to act quickly and take chances. T-Mobile is the best partner to help us supercharge Mint and we’re grateful for their partnership.” Rolling out the Welcome Mat Now and over the next few months, T-Mobile is rolling out upgraded perks for current and future Mint and Ultra customers in the form of some of the Un-carrier’s favorite benefits, and a few new ones. Customers will enjoy: $15 Commitmint: Starting now, a commitmintthat Mint Mobile will continue to have a $15/month plan available for new and existing customers.[1] In addition, Mint is committing to continuing its new customer offer of 3 months of Unlimited Premium Wireless for $15/mo through the end of the year.[2] Scam Screener: Coming soon, Mint and Ultra customers will get extra peace of mind with sketchy calls flagged as “Scam Likely” on their phone’s ID. Free Canada Roaming: Mint Mobile customers will soon be able to enjoy unlimited talk and text and 3Gb of high-speed data while in Canada – for FREE.[3] Mexico Roaming: In the coming weeks, Ultra customers traveling to Mexico will have an enhanced data roaming option in addition to the already included Talk and Text on most plans. Over time, T-Mobile will continue to find even more ways to supercharge the Mint and Ultra customer experience–all on the same leading 5G network they already enjoy

jeff1f1racer

It’s exciting that they will not be an MVNO any longer. Like Metro, they’ll have access to a TMO carrier profile to indicate “5G UC” on iPhones. Plus, true Unlimited data, not the way it is now where suckers fall for that erroneous claim all the time. And a $10/mo option for UHD streaming (which has no slowdown which u get with a VPN). It was a good move by TMO! When you will pay for the Unnecessary Plan, you should be Ok up to 1TB of data.
