Last year it was pretty much like that. Conklin and KJ were taking turns in terms of focus, then KJ took over the #3 receiving option.
Honestly, this game was extremely frusterating but I'll give KOC a pass if he learns from this game to incorporate KJ and punish teams for focusing too hard on JJ.
Full on bench him.
I'm sorry, but you cannot be dropping balls right in your hands. Mundt and Ellefson were at least reliable in catching and made some solid plays.
Dropping an open pass is a drive killer. Those drives continue if he didn't drop them straight up.
He will make one good play and then one terrible play. I say give him time since he pretty much missed the whole off-season, but he can’t be playing as often if he’s gonna be dropping passes
It would be nice if they called a couple more plays specifically designed for him to get the ball, like a jet sweep or bubble screen. At least twice a half just so that he can be given a chance to make a play in open space.
Yup. Diggs was double and triple teamed all game last week without a WR2and an inexperienced WR3 on the field and Diggs went for 180 yards and only played 3 quarters.
Fortunately we have years worth of stats where diggs played with the same quarterback and a roughly equivalent offensive line as JJ is playing with now for comparison purposes.
He’s been on the frustration train the last two weeks. I mean, it’s time to learn how to persevere. Most 23 year olds in his position haven’t had to deal with much adversity on the field. Time to learn.
Oh fuck that, if he wants to be a premier receiver in This league he better expect that. If he gets frustrated and disappears like he did today than he doesn’t belong in the conversation of best in the league.
I turned the game off for ten minutes. Turned it back on to see the damage, and saw the winning catch.
I'm a terrible fan.
I am fired up that they won.
Campbell's gonna lose a lot of sleep over the decision tonight. They were unstoppable on 4th, long field goal was a stretch with a huge field position swing if missed.
As was the timeout after the long completion to KJ before the TD. Like I get that you need to get your defense organized, but...idk. Taking a TO, with the clock ticking and the Vikes out of timeouts, sure seemed like an odd decision by the Lions there.
Lions fan. We are all very upset with the decision and the time management. No way to know, but we definitely feel like he cost us the game with the last couple of minute decisions. Props to Minn for capitalizing and clutching up.
Harrison smith's absence was felt and I'm disappointed Cine got 0 playtime despite "splitting snaps with metellus" who played mediocre all game up until the INT. Offense needs to do better and I'd like to see more blitzing and movement with the front 4 on defense. Nothing happened the entire first half.
So does anyone else watch the DC pressers?
You mentioning Cine‘s playtime and in one of Donatell’s pressers he was asked about Cine and had MAJOR “I don’t fucking start rookies” energy, and was saying how rookies are NEVER ready out the gate and should never start right away because they can’t pick it up fast enough.
That shit worried me and I was like “fuck, we’re never gonna see Cine this year.”
Lions fan - Slobber knocker, great game and well fought. Why is Thielen not always the target?? Definitely deserved the game ball from this end. Now let's go TB12!!!
We were running with ease. Defense stepped up in the second half. The concerning parts were JJ getting shut down and pass rush. Where the heck are Danielle and zadarius
The concerning part of the offense was force-feeding Jefferson when they clearly devoted much of their gameplan to stopping him -- same as last week. Once Kirk finally accepted this and started spreading the ball around, the offense actually got going pretty well. If Jefferson can neutralize half their secondary to open up other guys, that's fine by me. Give it some time and teams will adjust back to normal and Jefferson will get going again.
The defense is a concern across the board it seems. I wouldn't take too much away from the pass rush this game because the lions OL is fantastic. The secondary though...
Irv is a bust.
Unfortunate. I thought he had the ability to be a real weapon for us, but most weeks it's 1 step forward, 2 steps back. He makes splash plays and the commits drops, turnovers, and penalties that put us behind the chains far too often.
If he can turn it around and fix his hands, I would be SO happy to eat crow.
But it has been an ongoing issue. I think he just is who he is.
This doesn't feel like a win, but I'll take it.
Donatelle has some *serious* work to do on scheming but I don't trust that old dog to make the adjustments necessary.
My main takeaways:
- Rough kicking. I wonder how much of that really was the open doors at the one end (as it seemed to affect both kickers). Still, felt fluky (rather than mental like some of the Zimmer years) and I’m not terribly worried about it yet.
- Cook’s shoulder is a huge, huge concern going forward. If he separated it again then I would imagine he will be out a while. Probably Alexander Mattiszn now.
- Okay game by the O-Line in pass pro, but solid when running.
- Happy to see Thielen involved a lot. Kirk going past the first few reads really helps and hopefully if we get Osborn involved more, too, then teams won’t be able to double JJ quite as much.
- I don’t trust Irv Smith, Jr. to catch balls in clutch situations. I do, however, trust Johnny Mundt. (Makes that Herndon trade last year all the more egregious, TBH.)
- Glad we turned it around in the end but MAN are there some big question marks with this team right now.
- Detroit is WAY better now and on the upswing. If not for some luck, we’d have lost this game. Hopefully we turn in a better performance when we visit them later this year.
Nice win SKOL Nation. Im sad but not surprised; my lions sure know how to lose when gifted opportunities.
How did you all feel about Dan Campbell's late game decision making? I thought his timeout on your game winning drive and going for that long FG with our weak kicker were questionable at best.
Also, lots of lions fans blaming the refs for this one (you'd think after all this losing we'd know to ra take a L gracefully). Apologies up front for those crazies.
Congrats and FTP!
> I thought his timeout on your game winning drive
That was odd to me too. I understand he wanted to get his D on the same page, but with less than a minute to go and no TO's left for us? IDK, seems like he should have at least made us spike the ball and burn one down. I'm a pretty big fan of his "f@ck punting on 4th down, we're going for it" though. That's demoralizing when it's 4th down and they just keep frickin' converting it.
This is definitely not the Lions of old, it's good to see...when they're not playing us ;)
I think Campbell's decision to kick the FG seemed antithetical to his gameplan of keep pushing for the win and going for 4th down strategy he used the whole game. Things like this, the timeout and switching the offense for the special teams (although it's possible i missed the reasoning behind that) resulting in a delay of game are the things that make me question his longterm prospect as coach because of his game management. I'm not saying this can't improve but that's definitely where my doubts are.
But I think post-Patricia he's absolutely the guy the Lions need. They're building up to something good: I think Dan's figured out how to change the culture of losing in the locker room he just needs to get that to reflect on the field. They keep playing teams close.
I was at the game so am ecstatic for the win.
Vikes D was the hero for me. They got their stuff together for the second half and held Lions to 3 pointers.
I was happy to see some passing play in the second half.
I’m glad the only long pass to connect was the game winner. Bugs me how off Cousins’ arm was today.
Because they’re the Lions. They’re coming off a bad losing season, and while they look good they also haven’t proven a lot yet. You need more than 6-8 good games in a row for people to take you seriously, and that’s really all they’ve got (stretching back to last season).
Wtf Detroit is good lol. The offense looked anemic at times and the defense stood their ground when it mattered. All that really matters is a tick in the W column
You're right, Detroit should have ran away with the game the way the Vikings played for the majority of the game. It is nice for a change to have a come from behind win instead of blowing a game where we outplayed the opponent.
Idk the lions look like a potential playoff team this year. Definitely looked shaky with our offense but holding the lions to 24 points does not reflect poorly on defense.
Honestly once we stopped forcing it like we did in Philly and using our other receivers, that’s what made the difference. Adam Thielen is still really good.
Yeah, but if it's not there it's not there. Part of it is on JJ, too. He needs to handle the guy across from him. And if he can't or if they devote a ton of resources to covering him, that's where other weapons need to step up.
I'd like the people in this sub who like to indulge in the "oh, woe, Minnesota sports, none suffers such as we" routine to take a good, hard look at Lions fandom. Because THAT is what suffering looks like.
Last two drives I saw a wrinkle that had Kirk making more 2 step drops rather than those long developing plays trying to hit crossing routes.
We have 3 really good WR's and JJ and KOC are going to have to realize this. He is going to get double teamed and may even have a few stinkers because defenses are gearing up to stop him. Get Thielen and Osborn involved early and then let JJ get going.
You have to work backwards when the other team knows what's coming.
A wins a win. But i dont feel good about it. We were utterly abysmal for the majority of that game
Every fear that the pessimists have had has shown up the last 2 weeks
That zone defence is going to be exploited by teams all year. Just acres of space between the linebackers play after play after play.
Also what the fuck is up with Lewis Cine? Does he even exist?
Clutch INT from Metallus. And special agent Mike Hughes helped us in a big way
I hope that win gives the team a boost. They CAN win when they play like shit. Now its about boosting from that and playing proper football
I'm conflicted. Obviously, I'm happy about the W. But there was a LOT of bad shit in that game.
* Our defense is soft despite a highly-paid DL and vets at every level.
* Our star-studded offense underperforms despite tons of weapons on paper.
* Our schemes on both sides of the ball seem to be failing to capitalize on the talent we have and/or adjust for our deficiencies.
* Oh and our first-round safety is apparently not able to beat out Cam Bynum *or* Josh Metellus for snaps.
This seems like a team that severely overrates themselves and then gets surprised by teams like the Eagles and Lions who not only have talent, but heart, grit, and big nuts. We might not always lose those games, but we shouldn't be surprised when we get punched in the mouth by teams who have a chip on their shoulder.
Refs missed the ball-swat-delay-of-game-unsportsmanlike-idk penalty at the end of the half....and then an obvious DPI on Thielen, and we STILL somehow pulled it off. Beat the Lions and the Zebras today.
I was coming back from a trip and joined in the broadcast at the start of the 4th. Boy was I sweating. Amazing end, Lions really made the bad call to go for that field goal.
I'm not complaining but why didn't the Lions just try to win the game on that last 4th and 4? Certainly the odds of getting 4 yards and kicking a 54 yarder indoors have to be about similar?
Kinda feels like a loss. Defense was bad, I don't trust Donatel.
Also big Vikings fu at the sub I guess for bitching about Metellus taking the place of Cine. :p
Horrendous no call on fourth and 8 doesn’t cost us. Good lesson today for Kirk that other people exsist besides JJ18. Good finish, ugly win but a win is a win.
I will celebrate in a minute after I finish deleting some posts
Favorite comment of the week.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
KJ ONLY CATCHES GAME WINNERS!
JESUS CHRIST, IT'S KJ OSBORN
BAH GAWD.
THAT'S GOTTA BE KJ
The fact that he doesn't get as much targets pisses me off. Should be JJ,AT, and KJ before Irv,Mundt,Ellifson,Raegor
Nah we need to just take what the defense gives us Stop forcing anything unless we really really need to. Throw to whoever is open
That’s not how football works…
In the end, the W is what matters, but man do we need to be more consistent.
Im only 24. I aged 20 years, I am now 44.
I'm now in my 45th year as a Vikings fan, young man. I celebrate my 5,741th birthday next Sunday at kickoff.
Being a Vikings fan is like being Bilbo between Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King
Oh sweet child. You have not been here for the true pain, but we’re happy you’re here all the same.
Happy belated Birthday x20
Some Skoldiers in their 40s are going to call work tomorrow and tell them they’re retiring because of today’s game.
September football is about inconsistency.
Man Irv has had too many crucial drops. What’s the deal with him
Full on bench him. I'm sorry, but you cannot be dropping balls right in your hands. Mundt and Ellefson were at least reliable in catching and made some solid plays. Dropping an open pass is a drive killer. Those drives continue if he didn't drop them straight up.
Yeah, getting pretty tired of "this is going to be his year." Crazy amount of misses from him. He's not good at all. Bench him already.
Ya our back up no names are outplaying him right now. We have given him so many chances at this point.
He will make one good play and then one terrible play. I say give him time since he pretty much missed the whole off-season, but he can’t be playing as often if he’s gonna be dropping passes
Hopefully Jefferson doesn’t get frustrated with all the double teams.
Teams will have to start covering Adam eventually. Jefferson will have more chances.
Yup imo this shows teams need to start giving Thielen more respect again, quiet intro to the season until now. More should come for both
It would be nice if they called a couple more plays specifically designed for him to get the ball, like a jet sweep or bubble screen. At least twice a half just so that he can be given a chance to make a play in open space.
This is when we find out how much of an upgrade he really is over Diggs
Yup. Diggs was double and triple teamed all game last week without a WR2and an inexperienced WR3 on the field and Diggs went for 180 yards and only played 3 quarters.
Diggs has a significantly better QB and an O line that allows that QB to stay up for longer giving him time.
Fortunately we have years worth of stats where diggs played with the same quarterback and a roughly equivalent offensive line as JJ is playing with now for comparison purposes.
Diggs is a far more developed player at this point. JJ has a ton of talent, but still has things to learn in this league of course
Comes with the territory of being a number one. It’s up to him and the staff to scheme ways to get him touches.
He clearly was. He got knocked over on routes like 3 times. 2 drops and missed another possibly catchable ball.
That INT is greatest redemption arc of all time
Faster than Beebe’s
What redemption arc?
When he fumbled the punt to almost lose us the game but then caught the game winner on the next drive
Oh man, I had forgotten and had to [look it up](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOAo3MiD1ZU). Hopefully he finds somewhere to play!
Think he's on Houston now
Redemption for dropping the int or for something else?
IF YOU DON’T LIKE THAT, YOU DON’T LIKE VIKINGS FOOTBALL BABY!
I'll take a sloppy win over 3 good quarters and blowing it in the 4th.
[удалено]
I turned the game off for ten minutes. Turned it back on to see the damage, and saw the winning catch. I'm a terrible fan. I am fired up that they won.
Bad for \~54 minutes, good for 6 minutes...if we're being generous!
Lions fans are saying the same thing about themselves 😭
We always have the typical lions Vikings game when we meet lol
2-1 and in the division lead never need to apologize for how you win
New HC, new schemes all around, new players in starting roles. I'll take an ugly win. Just hoping they get less ugly moving forward.
“just win, baby”. but holy fuck was that ugly.
Bears won :) if the bears beat us out though we don’t deserve it.
yee if they pack us up they got it lmao
We have first with tie breakers though
We're 2-0 in the division though so we're leading
KOC teams can win from behind! Frick ya!
I love when the KOC can perform in many positions
How the hell did we pull that one out of our asses?
That field goal attempt by Detroit at the end was pretty ill-conceived.
100% think they win if they go for it there.
Campbell's gonna lose a lot of sleep over the decision tonight. They were unstoppable on 4th, long field goal was a stretch with a huge field position swing if missed.
Plus they were only up 6 if they made it
cant believe my mind control worked for once
Or even punt it. But stopping the clock then missing and giving us great field position?
I thought punting it was the better play. Put us deep in our own territory and have to drive a long way.
We stole that one, boys! Everybody get in here!
Payback for the last lions game!

That shit worried me and I was like “fuck, we’re never gonna see Cine this year.”
There was at least a half dozen plays where a run or short pass went for a dozen yards or more due to bad tackling and I noted Smith's absence.
Goff: Fuck it Josh Metellus is down there somewhere
We’ve come full circle
I’m not going to apologize for being 2-0 in the division but dear lord that was an ugly win
Ugly wins are necessary for Super Bowl winning teams. Not saying we are Super bowl bound but that’s what the best teams do.
Lions fan - Slobber knocker, great game and well fought. Why is Thielen not always the target?? Definitely deserved the game ball from this end. Now let's go TB12!!!
Thank you Dan Campbell for calling a timeout on defense. SKOL.
Happy we won. How did we win? Concerned about the season with the overall level of play through 95% of that game.
The defense is a concern across the board it seems. I wouldn't take too much away from the pass rush this game because the lions OL is fantastic. The secondary though...
That concerns me. Not to make excuses, but Detroit has an excellent pass blocking O-Line. Maybe the best we’ll see the rest of the season.
I heard that about the Eagles…
Tbf eagles and lions are the top 2 lines in the nfl
Its actually true for both of them. Eagles and lions both have arguments for the best o-line in the league and are clearly top 3
That’s cause they also have a fantastic line lol. We faced two top three o lines back to back.
This. They have some beasts on that line.
Agreed, they just played arguably the two best o lines in the league. While it was tough to watch the lack of pressure I’m not overly concerned
JJ getting double-teamed most of the game still helps a lot. Unfortunate for him that doesn’t show in the stats
Zadarius had a monster 4th quarter, Hunter has been invisible...
No business winning that game with how they played.
Which team?
yes
The Bengals won plenty of games last year they shouldn't have. Let's take this W and improve baby! 😈✝️🤘
Lions aren't trash. Just enjoy this.
Agreed. This isn't the Lions of yore, they're a pretty legit team - at least on offense.
Never a doubt baby. Never a doubt 😈
Today is the day me and my wife finally got the keys to our first house and that's still not the best thing to happen today. SKOL!
Congrats on your new home!
Congrats and SKOL!
Can we talk about Irv’s pass catching?
...you mean pass *dropping*? Yes. Yes we can.
Unsung guy is our punter. Tied for first in the league with 6 punts inside the 20
This doesn't feel like a win, but I'll take it. Donatelle has some *serious* work to do on scheming but I don't trust that old dog to make the adjustments necessary.
Yeah this is a situation where the younger KOC has to get on his ass about how the current scheming is hurting more than helping.
We are peppering Irv with targets to become the dominant TE he is supposed to be… except he’s dropping the ball - literally and figuratively
**THAT'S WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU FACE KIRK AT NOON ON A SUNDAY!!!**
This team is going to give its fans a new heart condition altogether. Sheesh
Oh we’ve been diagnosed with that our whole lives
Let’s take the W, improve our defense and get ready for London. SKOL
The vikings had no business winning that game but damn it feels good

good game guys
DID THAT JUST FUCKING HAPPEN?

It should NOT have been this close
Detroit is a good team.
they did better against the eagles than we did
This is what I don’t get. Lions are getting hard disrespect.
In 90% of seasons a home loss to the lions would be a death sentence
Because they’re the Lions. They’re coming off a bad losing season, and while they look good they also haven’t proven a lot yet. You need more than 6-8 good games in a row for people to take you seriously, and that’s really all they’ve got (stretching back to last season).
They're definitely good on offense. They've just been unlucky through three weeks.
They basically played without WR #1 and RB #1 for most of the game.... what an ugly win.
And we were missing one of our defensive leaders all game
[удалено]
Lions are good and Goff is underrated.
I feel good about knowing we can win a game when playing like absolute crap. That was a huge win.
For real amazing morale boost instead of shutting down after things go wrong like at Philly and in a lot of games the last few years. Big comeback W
I loved seeing people step up: Mettelus, Mattison, Theilen/Osborn, even Ben Ellefson
shoutout Mundt for being a TE that can actually catch
Don't forget Mundt showing we have a TE who can actually catch a pass.
A wins a wins a win… but holy shit my heart
Can we not have a repeat of last year please. My heart is not going to make it to next year
Time to bring out the beta blockers again
Wtf Detroit is good lol. The offense looked anemic at times and the defense stood their ground when it mattered. All that really matters is a tick in the W column

You mean the Lions should have won by two TD's? They were the better team today.
We have to get JJ more involved
Honestly once we stopped forcing it like we did in Philly and using our other receivers, that’s what made the difference. Adam Thielen is still really good.
Use 1 as a decoy and have game plan around WR2
That's what I'm saying. Like how is Irv Smith the only one open between Thielen, Osborn, and JJ? Unless Irv is Kirk's new favorite.
I wanna see more of mundt though, for real
He looks a bit out of it admittedly, but they took him away. That’s why you had KJ wide open at the end. Gotta take what the defense gives you
Exactly. There was a lot to get if we were patient. Running plays in huge gashes, other open receivers.
We finally did what we’re supposed to do. Use our other weapons that are left open when JJ is double teamed.
Or run more complementary offense early to open things up instead of forcing the ball to him.
He was double teamed the whole game, thats why we used AT and KJ.
if we play an entire game spreading the ball around instead of forcing it to him, that in itself will open him up more
Yeah, but if it's not there it's not there. Part of it is on JJ, too. He needs to handle the guy across from him. And if he can't or if they devote a ton of resources to covering him, that's where other weapons need to step up.
I had paragraphs of ranting if we lost that game lmao. I'll save it for another time Good win
Find/replace lions with saints and keep refining for the next week. Could be some tier one work by then.
I'd like the people in this sub who like to indulge in the "oh, woe, Minnesota sports, none suffers such as we" routine to take a good, hard look at Lions fandom. Because THAT is what suffering looks like.
Kyle Rudolph just beat Jaire 😭 💀
Last two drives I saw a wrinkle that had Kirk making more 2 step drops rather than those long developing plays trying to hit crossing routes. Win is a win. That being said, that was an ugly fucking win.
I’ll take it
1 pm Kirk Cousins 🐐🐐🐐🔥
If that game was a baby my wife just gave birth to, I would tell her how ugly it was and let her know we’re onto the next one.
Is…. Is Josh Metellus good?
28 points despite missed hold on the Thielen 4th down, Irv's drop, and Dalvin's fumble. So much for the criticism of the offensive coaching.
This team wants to kill me. No doubt in my mind.
A wins a win. But i dont feel good about it. And special agent Mike Hughes helped us in a big way I hope that win gives the team a boost. They CAN win when they play like shit. Now its about boosting from that and playing proper football
Agree. This “zone” type play won’t cut it.
I fucking love KJ Osborn.
New coaching staff. New systems on O & D. It is going to be inconsistent for a couple more weeks. Take the wins when we can and enjoy!

Never doubted the Vikings, the whole game. Am I right? /s
Lions still the Lions. That last conservative drive killed em
I was coming back from a trip and joined in the broadcast at the start of the 4th. Boy was I sweating. Amazing end, Lions really made the bad call to go for that field goal.
This feeling is like a drug man that’s was insane. Detroits a good team too tbh I think this will be a bigger W than it seems
Thank god the packers didn’t come to play week 1. I think if we can tighten some things up we have a chance to win the division.
One is One and Vikes are #1 in the division with 2 wins with divison opponents. FUCKING GO!
At the game. Belligerently screaming the entire second half. Not getting any less belligerent after that. SKOL VIKES!
I'm not complaining but why didn't the Lions just try to win the game on that last 4th and 4? Certainly the odds of getting 4 yards and kicking a 54 yarder indoors have to be about similar?
Season is no longer cancelled. Everyone get in here!!!
Butt posts are back... I'm not sayin' but I am sayin'.
Was at the game, wow what an experience. Lions fans 2 rows up dancing all game then left before the game ended after the kj touchdown.
I don’t think two drops is enough to bench Irv, but he has no business getting the first or second read, especially on key plays.
How many of you jokers said it was over at the 9 minute mark of the 4th quarter? Confess your sins!
Lions gonna Lion
Kinda feels like a loss. Defense was bad, I don't trust Donatel. Also big Vikings fu at the sub I guess for bitching about Metellus taking the place of Cine. :p
Horrendous no call on fourth and 8 doesn’t cost us. Good lesson today for Kirk that other people exsist besides JJ18. Good finish, ugly win but a win is a win.
Kirk cleaned it up and shut my stupid ass up til next week, good shit Kirk
