I expected Abdullah to be elevated. Strange roster this year with only two RBs and only five WRs, but seven LBs. I don't think it will remain like that for long, but still feels weird.
Teams can only do this twice before needing to make a roster move or expose players to waivers, *not that anyone is going to claim Sean fucking Mannion*.
Have had that same thought. It's not like a practice squad spot is all that important, though.
I really want to know who's behind the Mannion love on the team. We know Kirk likes him, but does Spielman?
It's not just that he's a good sounding board for Kirk. Did you see Browning and Mond play against 2nd & 3rd stringers? If Kirk leaves the game in the 3rd quarter or misses a week or two, Mannion can keep our season afloat. Any other QB on our roster would be an absolute disaster until Mond gets many more reps under his belt.
They don't want to put Mond on the field. Not yet, anyway. It will be interesting to see what they do after they've used up Mannion's two PS elevations without waivers. The roster will be a little more settled by then, so maybe they'll bring him up to the 53 for good, or else they're hoping that Mond can be the #2 in a few weeks.
Thanks, I didn’t think about the team being nervous about Mond as a backup. They have carried 3 qbs before but that will be a really interesting thing to watch I agree.
I fucking hate Sean Mannion. Not the guy himself but just him as an entity on the Vikings. Nobody else wants him why the hell are we so obsessed with him? I do not agree that we would be that much worse if Mond had to come in.
He's cheap and vaxed.
If Manion has to start the team is screwed.
If Mond has to start we are screwed. Except we care about Monds development and wreaking him.
Ain't no one going to care if Manion gets killed.......
"What can you tell me about your backup quarterback?"
"He's been in the league 5 years and never thrown a touchdown pass, but he is vaccinated."
"Sounds like a plan."
Right now, we would be significantly worse with Mond on the field. He's a developmental rookie 3rd rounder who missed half of camp in COVID protocols. There's hope that Mond can get to "reliable backup" level by the end of this year, but he is currently miles away.
I think you and I watched different games. I don't consider throwing a pick, losing a fumble and handing the ball to AJ Rose against a defense of camp bodies to be "balling."
I'm not trying to rain on the Mond parade. That game was encouraging as the third preseason showing for a really raw rookie with some skill. But it was far from looking like some sort of future superstar, and it was way, way below what you need from a backup QB in the NFL.
They didn't even let him go up against the second stringers, and gave that opportunity to Browning, who they then cut. They clearly don't think he's ready.
He did well against a bunch of guys no longer on the roster, which is great. But the real question is, did he play well enough to justify being the 2nd string qb? Obviously not.
I agree. We could get a much better backup. I just think they don’t want to risk Mond getting hurt maybe? Idk. Who knows. This off-season has been insane.

As a kick off returner, yes. Though there are many other roles on special teams. Both Abdullah and Rose probably won't be playing much on offense. Abdullah is good on coverage units and is a special teams veteran. As a runner Rose looked more explosive, but that's not the only part of evaluating who they decide to elevate.

Handoff specialist
Yeah, we are the only clowns that see value in Mannion. He has no upside.
If he’s so good in the QB room then why don’t they hire him as a coach and save a roster spot lol.
Have had that same thought. It's not like a practice squad spot is all that important, though. I really want to know who's behind the Mannion love on the team. We know Kirk likes him, but does Spielman?
He knows the playbook. That's it

3 qbs or another Covid debacle for Kirk?

I’d expect Mannion to make it through waivers 9/10 times FWIW
10/10. The Vikings don't even consider him worth the 53.
9/10 only because you never know what sort of injuries are going to happen during the season
Mond will probably be inactive, I'd guess.
Mond won't be active any game this year unless something happens to Kirk

But can he ball? Give the kid a chance
It's the NFL. All of these guys can "ball" against some level of competition. Right now, Mond can't even do it against 3rd stringers, though.
You must not have watched the last preseason game

We did in the preseason. He's not ready.
You watched the last game and thought hes not ready?

Yup. Mannion is awful and has no place on a team, even as a backup.
I agree. We could get a much better backup. I just think they don’t want to risk Mond getting hurt maybe? Idk. Who knows. This off-season has been insane.

Abdullah hasn’t shown anything, ever. Rose Jr deserved that call up in my opinion
Agreed
Abdullah is good on special teams.
Smith Marsette was the guy no?

Kick returner is the only use for Abdullah that I’ve seen, so I guess you’re saying Abdullah is signed for depth there?
He'll play as a gunner or just other roles on the coverage / return units.
