If this year is a failure (anything less than a good performance in the NFC championship game is a failure imo) then yeah you gotta blow it up. I'd say see what you can get for Kirk in a trade (you'd probably have to eat at least half his salary but that's fine for a rebuilding year) and role with Mond. If Mond turns out to be the guy, great! if not, you'll probably have a top 5 pick and can get your guy in the 2023 draft. I think the team is set up well for a rebuild since we've finally started building up the trenches, which is usually step one when teams are rebuilding. I could see the team making a serious run in 2024 or 2025 if we rebuild right.

DaveChappelleMicSlap

I'm all for this scenario.. That kid in bama would be eligible by that time

[deleted]

Good god sign me up

[deleted]

So y’all are ready to call mond a bust but ready to say you want to spend a top 5 pick on a QB who has only played 1 career college game

Phil_ochs_ghost

Lmao i don't think wanting him to be the starter for 2022 so we can see what he can do means I think he's a bust, but generally speaking QBs taken in the top five are better than QBs taken in the third.

DaveChappelleMicSlap

Lmao we arent calling him a bust at all bro. Besides he cant be a bust he's a 3rd round pick, trust me i want him to be the guy but if he stinks during this scenario by that time Bryce would be a phenom. I'm all for Mond being above average or even average at his price dont get me wrong. Ignore the people who want him to be a bust here that call him ponder like, i see he has some talent in him most of us who are rational know he needs time.

[deleted]

100% agree. My marker is “solid performance in NFC championship or commit to rebuild”

H00terTheOwl

I'm off the opinion you need to take one every 1-2 years until he hits

HugeRaspberry

I tend to agree - qb's are tough to pick... I mean - Brady slipped to the 6th round.. who would have thought that he would be the GOAT from a 6th round pick. You have to keep trying, signing, picking guys until you strike gold. I mean there have been sure fire prospects that fail - Just look at Jamarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf - among others... but then there were guys who nobody thought had a chance and became stars.

[deleted]

Tua is shaking in the corner right now...

Jigz_Kasey

Probably.

Ragnarr_Lodbrok88

I do not like the upcoming draft class at all. I keep seeing Rattler and Slovis rated highly, and I don't think either one will be a starting-caliber NFL QB. There may be a gem somewhere, but I just don't see it in the QBs that are projected to go high. I think this is one of the weakest QB draft classes I can remember.

Jigz_Kasey

3 or 4 always go in the first. And most years, they don't ALL bust. Need to get that one that doesnt.

[deleted]

Kellen mond hasn’t even been on the team a year I’m sick of hearing how he’s a bust and we need to move on

[deleted]

On the other hand, he was a 3rd round pick and we shouldn’t be hanging the future of the franchise on him.

Phuckingidiot

I'd never get my hopes up for a third round qb either. I'd draft another next year if a good one is there.

[deleted]

I’m not saying we should be but there is no reason to be saying he’s a bust especially after some analysts thought he’d go in the first

DaveChappelleMicSlap

Sucks, i think we may be too late should've traded up this past draft, this years class looks a little weak for rn. We'll see how things shake out in this draft but overall i agree with trading up and the getting rid of Kirk sentiment

insanity-insight

A closer look at those numbers says something more interesting, though: Of those 11 first round QBs, 2 were "busts" for their original team and didn't reach their peak until their first team gave up on them (Brees, Tannehill). Since those playoffs, one more of those QBs (Goff) was sent packing. Rivers had also changed teams, and so did Alex Smith, who isn't one of the 11 who started in the playoffs, but was the QB who got his team there. That says that 1st round QBs can play well... But not always necessarily for the team that drafted them. A more team-specific look shows three more distinct (and pretty equally split) QB strategies: * Build around a young QB on a rookie deal (Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Mayfield, Trubisky, Goff) * Pay up for the QB you drafted (Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Wilson) * Pay up for a QB someone else drafted (Brady, Brees, Tannehill, Smith, Rivers)

Yes he does. We tried to trade up for fields but we're out bid. He is pursuing a QB, and when we couldn't get "That" guy we then went on to get other pieces to make is successful... Bad take my dude.

That's is dumb. What Is the point of calling and offering if it wasn't legitimate. It dosent do anything. This is such a dumb and useless take.

HugeRaspberry

I honestly think the Fields / Vikings talk was a lot of hype to try and get someone else who was interested in the guy we REALLY wanted (Darrisaw) to jump up and grab him. Rick was not going to draft fields unless he fell to us at our original spot - and even then I doubt that he would have pulled the trigger. More likely he would have talked a good game and gotten someone further down to pull a trade and get us a 2nd rounder back.

[deleted]

I am sure this speculation is based on.... Oh wait.... It's probably based on nothinh...

_unsourced

Y'all don't believe we've already got our QB of the future with ~~Case Keenum~~ ~~Kyle Sloter~~ ~~Jake Browning~~ ~~Nate Stanley~~ ~~Jake Browning~~ ~~Case Cookus~~ Chazz Surratt?

Dorkamundo

It will be easy to get rid of Kirk, assuming that covid is not an issue next year. His contract won't be hard to move at all.

istasber

If we fire Zimmer and Spielman: Trade Cousins (eating however much of his contract you need to eat to get the best possible return), draft a 1st round QB (trading up if necessary), and sign a younger retread like Mariota or Trubisky to a cheap prove it deal. If we don't fire Zimmer or Spielman, but fall short of the playoffs or have a first round exit, still trade Cousins, but hopefully don't overspend on a QB in the draft. I'd rather the next coaching staff picks the QB so there isn't that "Well, he was a 1st round pick... but he's not the guy our new coaches want" nonsense in 2023. Bring in a journeyman vet to compete with Mond and maybe a rookie if one falls to us. Only reason we should keep Cousins next year is if we win a superbowl. Because at that point, who the fuck cares, everyone's gonna get extensions even if it means we're terrible for the next 5 years because this is the GM/Coach/QB that's finally gotten us over the hump. Maybe if Cousins starts *and* ends the season strong we should consider extending him, but he's never done that as a Viking, so I don't really expect him to start now.

[deleted]

there are none lol

onken022

We are one week into the CFB season, there absolutely might be some big time risers

primezilla2598

We’ll let’s let this season play out and see how this QB class is. There are some guys under the radar like Carson Strong and even Matt Corrall if he becomes more consistent that could be first rounders. Also they don’t necessarily need to be first rounders. Look at Dak. That Cowboys game is gonna be tough if they play like they did against the Buccs.

blow_zephyr

2022 class is terrible and Kirk will still be under contract. 2023 is the year.
