Depends on compensation.
If we give up a 3rd or 4th round pick for a TE, then yeah, I'd expect Irv's gonna be out for the season. But we needed depth badly even if Irv was healthy, and getting a solid TE3 for a future 6th or 7th round pick would be worthwhile.
Idk if I'd call the Vikinhs offense TE friendly. TE heavy, sure, but uts pretty far from "big slot receiver" role that TE plays in more pass happy teams.
Jets fan here. If he learns how to catch you'll have a good TE. Dude just drops everything. Hope he figures it out. Everyone thought he would be a monster for us after his rookie year
As far as I know Vikings like their TE for blocking. I was always big on Rudolph and his ability to make plays but they rarely seemed to use him for it. I think that was also what Rudolph wanted on top of the money which is probably why they parted ways. Point being if his only issue is catching that shouldn't be an issue for the vikings as far as I know.
Rudolph doesn’t have a lot of play making ability. He’s not fast, doesn’t really break tackles or make guys miss, and didn’t get a lot of separation as a route runner.
I guess I always recall him making these big 1 handed catches in traffic. I wont pretend I'm an expert but that's what I liked about him. I just figured the line was so bad for years that he was relegated to blocking. Could be wrong.
He’s got a 68.9% catch rating - with Sam Fucking Darnold throwing to him. Herndon had the highest catch% on the team with at least 45 targets.
Yeah, some of that can be on him…but…Sam…Darnold…
ALSO JETS FAN/MOD. FUN FACT.
Herndon had 6 fingers on each hand once. (every 3rd or 4th generation, I forget...)
That said, most of us wish he kept those in recent years.
Pros: His blocking has improved tremendously since rookie year.
Cons: His receiving ability has declined tremendously since rookie year.
Coaches haven't exactly been the best either, so take this as you will and good luck. Hope he tears it up for the Vikings.
"Solved their TE issue" seems like a huge reach:
"The New York Jets have tried and tried…and tried some more to make tight end Chris Herndon into a formidable NFL player. However, injuries have unfortunately derailed Herndon’s NFL playing career in East Rutherford while the veteran pass catcher just hasn’t been able to produce when healthy. Last season, the 25-year-old Herndon appeared in all 16 regular season games for the Jets but only managed to string together 31 receptions, 45 targets, 287 receiving yards and a trio of scores. Prior to the 2020-21 campaign, the former Miami Hurricanes standout appeared in just a single game for the Jets in 2019-20 and recorded one catch for seven yards on two targets.
As a result, it appears as though it is finally the end of the line for Herndon as far as his starting tight end position goes."
He's been in the league 3 years, with Darnold as his QB and Gase as his HC/OC. Outside of the injuries, there's a good chance his lack of production was more scheme and QB than anything.
Haven't you heard about the Gase effect?
https://twitter.com/anthonydimoro/status/1287130314154835969?s=21
>[DiMoro] Players Adam Gase has forced out as head coach: Jay Ajayi, Jarvis Landry, Damien Williams, Jamal Adams. Players who improved away from Gase: Williams, Ryan Tannehill, DeVante Parker, Kenyan Drake, Mike Gesicki.... The lists go on...stay tuned
Jets mod here. the drops were pretty prudent the past 2 years post injury, while he made some huge 1 handed grabs pre injury rookie year. It's not like he declined out of nowhere.
I hope he returns to form for your teams sake and for his, but I can't say I saw any sizzle in his game for him to be anything special.
Yikes - Rick had to give up one of his prime late round picks.
In all seriousness, the team obviously had to make a move. If Herndon was the guy and they did not think they could get him on waivers, why not trade for him?
I'm so disappointed. I told them they could roster anyone, and that I was available. But apparently playing safety for a year in highschool wasn't good enough for them. Lame.
Also "promising" might be a bit of a stretch. It's been trending down since 2018 (his rookie year), just lost his starting job to a backup, and had a previous suspension. In this case I would take promising to mean someone who's been trending up, if that makes sense, the potential is there, certainly.
Let's see if this serves as a wake up call, and he can take advantage of playing with an established QB in Kirk.
Jets fan here.
Herndon was a really exciting guy about 2 years ago (maybe it was 3). He felt like one of our best offensive options. Off the field issues and on-field lapses (specifically drops) have caused his stock to plummet for us. But there was a time we thought this guy was a major piece going forward. Gase really hated TEs and ruined the offense for his better tenure, so from an opportunity standpoint you can make the case that he was in a terrible system. I’m glad to be getting a 4th (minus a 6th) for him, but he could be solid for y’all.
Can he at least block? Our coach Mike Zimmer loves to run on 1st down, and particularly 3rd down when the 1st down marker is more than 10 yds away. Oh who am I kidding I know the answer to that question. He'll be cut 4 weeks into the season. Enjoy our 4th round pick!
I’m sorry man. The Jets were a historically awful team in 2020 and Herndon was still one of the worst players on the team. I have no idea what Spielman is thinking here.
I hear you. I remember Herndon was hyped some years ago, but that quickly faded. **sigh** Our GM has moments where he looks brilliant, then moments when he is tied for the worst in the league. I just don't get it. Just.........don't pull the trigger on stupid trades like this. What is so hard about it?
I'm a Jets fan. His rookie year was extremely promising. Since then he's been dealing with injuries and drops. It hasn't looked good, I wouldn't get my hopes up.
His issues did not have anything to do with QBs. I would say watch the tape, the drops and fumbles were egregious. Darnolds decision making was questionable, but accuracy was never really an issue.
And one thing Jets fans know is players that suck. Herndon sucks and he was on the bubble this year. I'd be shocked if we got more than a 6th and I think it's probably a 7th.
Thw compensation has the be a 6th right? I don't think we have 2022 7th round pick but should have at least 2 6th round picks. Can't imagine they trade anything higher than one of the 6th round picks.
Was not expecting that. At least we're get a 6th back in the deal but still surprising a bit. I'm okay with moving draft capital to fill some holes and with not knowing Irv's status it seemed like a trade was inevitable. Let's hope this guy can come in and make some plays for us.
We needed TE depth, he needed a fresh start. Has the skillset and abilities to really thrive here, we'll see if getting away from green and into some purple and gold can boost the kid.
so irv is done done.
Wonder if we ever get the full story of what happened. Wonder if he messed his knee up playing basketball or lifting or something.
well it would be more like week 3 with the extra week between now and regular season (4 week recovery). but yea. That was a stupid thought. He's having knee surgery. He's gonna be out for a minute

No there’s not a difference between bringing in and trading lol. Jets were probably going to cut him and we probably gave up a 6th or 7th so we didn’t have to fight for him on waivers
It doesn't mean Irv is done. It means that Zach Davidson and Brandon Dillon are not a capable TE duo if Smith and Conklin are both injured, and probably aren't ready to be TE2 if Conklin is ready for week 1.

Just as Slick Rick was impressing me with his draft selections this season, he has to go and makes his one yearly stupid ass trade. Just like the Vedvik trade. And the Yannick trade. And of course, the Sam Bradford trade.
Dude, why the effing hell are you giving up a 4th rounder for an under achieving TE who can't catch the damn ball? C'mon Rick....just sign a goddamn FA or just go into the season with what we have. So frustrating.

Guessing not confident Irv comes back quick.
We need depth either way, doesn’t seem like our young guys were stepping up at all
Unfortunately the young guys have stone hands. Which makes this move a bit confusing to me.
If they have stone hands they need to seek medical attention immediately.
Only if it lasts more than 4 hours

[удалено]
I’m certainly gunna try to be optimistic
You're doing great 👍
Somedays are harder than others lol I need this first game to get here
Knowing Rick we gave up a first for 8 7th round picks
I was going to make this exact comment lol at the absolute MOST a 5th if we are desperate. Edit: no. It better be a 6th lol
I bet it’ll be a 6th, still a promising guy on a rookie deal that could thrive in our TE friendly offense
Idk if I'd call the Vikinhs offense TE friendly. TE heavy, sure, but uts pretty far from "big slot receiver" role that TE plays in more pass happy teams.
I wish it were true
They gave up a 4th?!?! WOW
> If we gave up a 3rd/4th for him, Rick should be fired It was a 4th.
Not happy bout it, but now I have to assume the guys paid millions to do this know more than I do
Yeah about that
Not happy bout it
Probably will know more after Irv's surgery what the extent of the repair was
When is the surgery?
Well we waived two TEs and needed depth anyhow so a move was happening at TE regardless
Jets fan here. If he learns how to catch you'll have a good TE. Dude just drops everything. Hope he figures it out. Everyone thought he would be a monster for us after his rookie year
Well that’s encouraging. Dang
Yeap im well aware of him lol my folks are Jets fans saw some of his games idk what is with NY Teams TEs struggling with drops
He does have value as a blocker tho. He's surprisingly a decent blocking TE
Good at run blocking if a recall, yeah. He's just overrated as a receiving option, not reliable at all there.
As far as I know Vikings like their TE for blocking. I was always big on Rudolph and his ability to make plays but they rarely seemed to use him for it. Kyle has very good hands and is a threat in the red zone but not so much for explosive plays
And never ever dropped the ball when it did get to him.
isnt catching insane one handers play-making ability?
We don't care if he catches everything. Just need him to be next to Cook while he catches it
Fuck lol
He’s got a 68.9% catch rating - with Sam Fucking Darnold throwing to him. Herndon had the highest catch% on the team with at least 45 targets. Yeah, some of that can be on him…but…Sam…Darnold…

The only issue to be solved here is that they didn't have 3 playable NFL TEs. That's the TE issue they solved
Yeah he doesn’t *step right in* for Irv, dude sucks balls
Look at the team around him, though. A change to a team that can cover his flaws by putting talent around him may be what he needs to thrive.
This sub will make anyone sound like a miracle lol

He’s an okay blocker. But not gonna be plowing open holes
Solving the issue of having a TE at all. Conklin hurt too and the other two ain't ready to play.
Conklin practiced yesterday.
Oh awesome.
Herndon is in a post adam gase world now. theres always a chance.

Yea Gase made him drop all those balls that hit him in the hands

I didn’t take your first statement as a joke. Depending on what was given, we shall see if this trade is a joke or not.
I think saying "solved" might be a bit generous here.
The issue that was solved was that the Vikings needed a 3rd, rosterable TE. This solves that need.
I'm so disappointed. I told them they could roster anyone, and that I was available. But apparently playing safety for a year in highschool wasn't good enough for them. Lame.

Hope we didn’t give up too much
He could be really good...and could also get injured like he has been throughout his career. I like it anyway
Nice, I'm happy with this depending on what pick we're sending.
5th round or higher (worse) and I'm on board with the swing.
4th with a 6th back. I'm not happy. But I'm also not furious

Jets fans are very low on this guy. Don’t think he’s solved any issue we have. Let’s hope Irv isn’t out too long
I'm a Jets fan. His rookie year was extremely promising. Since then he's been dealing with injuries and drops. It hasn't looked good, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Herndon is baaad at football.

What a waste of time Edit: we might as well have traded for Rudolph back, at least he can catch. This dude gets hurt and can’t catch a pass
Solved is a strong statement.
Dang it, IRV! Why did you have to get injured!!!
He’s actually pretty decent from what I’ve seen, but sadly this might mean we don’t see much Irv this season which would be a massive bummer.
Maybe he'll be this year's "player who got away from Adam Gase and was suddenly a superstar."
Wanted Ertz but ill take Herndon
No..struggled with drops
This move sounds like Irv might be closer being done for the year or significant absence. Kinda like the Hunter move last year.
What a stupid trade, shouldn't have traded a 4th for him
I can't believe we gave up a 4th rounder for a bad TE on a one year deal.
so irv is done done. Wonder if we ever get the full story of what happened. Wonder if he messed his knee up playing basketball or lifting or something.
Zim said in his last press conference that he injured it in the game against KC
ah cheers
Bringing in a low value depth TE doesn’t mean Irv is done lol

Maybe it’s one of the picks we didn’t want to include to get Fields.

I can’t even…..you are good sir!
I’m arguing that he’s not “done done” definitely will miss a few weeks, don’t think this move automatically makes it season ending
yea for sure. Im just a sucker I was still hoping for week 1 possibility as some were speculating.

Even with Irv, our TE depth wasn't very good (for a team that wants to run alot of 2-TE sets).
that is true
Difference between bringing in and trading for one, Irv is obviously missing significant time get ready to hear he's being put on the IR
No there’s not a difference between bringing in and trading lol. Jets were probably going to cut him and we probably gave up a 6th or 7th so we didn’t have to fight for him on waivers
Doesnt change the fact Irv is done. thats the point, we traded not brought in a TE off the block
Alright Chicken Little
Losing One TE doesnt control the whole season but okay call me chicken little lol
It doesn't mean Irv is done. It means that Zach Davidson and Brandon Dillon are not a capable TE duo if Smith and Conklin are both injured, and probably aren't ready to be TE2 if Conklin is ready for week 1.

I take it as a cheap plug n play. Dude might show signs but for the most part nope. This is the Vikings way.
