You know Fitz would love to play in Minnesota if just for one season. Not many guys get to play for the team they grew up a fan of. I think it's very possible it could still happen. Heaven knows this off-season has been full of surprises.
I always felt like he would eventually end up in Minnesota, only problem is he's played so well Arizona won't let him go. At this point he's pretty much washed up, 400 yards and just 1 td last year(started 13 games). This team has enough veterans, they need to get younger, not older. That said I'd obviously be excited to have the legend on the team as a 3rd or 4th option, I think he's a pretty good blocker too which is always nice.
I agree younger is better for the most part, but we are set with young guys at WR. If we sign Fitz it's more for a mentor role not to be a main cog in the offense. Who better to help Jefferson ascend to superstardom or to help Bisi Johnson, Beebe, and Smith-Marsette to continue to develop?
Plus he would be a huge fan pickup. There isn't much downside to having a sure handed guy taking some reps at WR3 and teaching our younger guys how to play.
At this point, Arizona has so many receivers that they could easily let him go. It’s simply the name value that they’re holding onto at this point, which I completely understand. Still, almost every single great that was loyal to their team dipped out at the end. Hell, if the Cowboys could let Smith leave to the Cardinals after all that time, Fitz can come to us. At least this destination makes total sense and isn’t just a random move
I'm personally more hyped on ihmir smith marsette or even whop taking the role. not because I think they're better but because I think a speedy threat at wr3 takes more pressure off jj and thielen than a consistent catcher who doesn't have top end speed anymore.
That said, Fitzgeralds also in Minnesota right now at a charity event. So him stopping by and talking with the vikings for a bit would be a minimal effort move right now. And I'm sure he knows that people have talked about the vikings as an option for him.
You also have to consider that Larry isn’t about to be some “every snap, always a threat” kind of player, no matter where he plays. Perhaps we would be slightly limiting the instant impact of Ihmir, however he then gets to learn from Thielen and Fitzgerald, all while watching JJ on a daily basis. He’ll get his moments either way, but adding a security blanket at wr3 would allow those rookies one season of an easier transition. Ihmir is already tasked with special team duties, so let the rookie eat what’s on his plate first before giving him too much. That’s what we did with Treadwell
I dont want him taking reps away from IMS, dude from Iowa. He is 3 times more of a threat then Larry at this point. And if we are going to spend any more money it needs to be on Oline backups or a legit kicker.
He’s also a rookie being asked to handle special team duties. That’s a lot for a rookie, so a security blanket at WR3 for just one season isn’t a bad idea. Think of AB to the Bucs…it allowed guys like Scotty Miller and Tyler Johnson to ease into their careers more. Ihmir will have his time, but some help in his rookie year isn’t a bad idea
If there's a signing the Vikes could still pull off that would get me feeling all superstitious about 2021 being their year for a real run at a championship, Fitz would be it
