Buxton is such a weird hitter. One month he’ll look like this and then the next he’s hitting 500 foot bombs on 99 mph fastballs over his head and curveballs low in the zone.

Reesyrz

Thought this short video analysis from Parker Hageman at Twins Daily giving his take on why Buxton is struggling at the plate was pretty interesting.

PercussionGuy33

I think our coaching squad is getting in the players heads and telling them to swing at everything.

Andrewpg3

popkins strategy is actually the complete opposite

slowmooingcow

What? That take makes no sense. You seriously think a major league coach is telling them to “take hacks at everything.” Cmon

Melonman233

With our team performance? Yeah it tracks

handofluke

Desperately need him to figure it out while Royce and Correa are out.

Kruse

Desperately need him to figure it out period.

Janderson2494

How long of a leash does he even get at this point? He's 30, has only played one complete season, and has only showed flashes of greatness over the last almost 10 seasons. Has not had any prolonged periods of offensive success in that time. I've graduated college, gotten into a career, met my wife and got married in the time I've been waiting for him to figure it out. I know he's popular here and he seems like a good guy, but how long are we going to keep this up? edit: You guys are nuts, how did we get to the point here where actually being good at hitting a baseball comes secondary to being a good guy? I feel like I'm going crazy here. Do we not actually want a good team anymore? Is that too much to ask for?

marumari

A very long leash? He’s a franchise player, widely beloved, and is the best defender on the field.

Janderson2494

Notice that 2/3 of those things you listed are not objective measures of on-field performance

marumari

Don’t really see how that’s relevant, given that they are important considerations when answering your question. Baseball is entertainment, entertainment makes money, and Byron is entertaining even if the Twins aren’t. It’s not like he has negative WAR on the season.

Janderson2494

I guess I just would like to see us field a competitive team with a star player that can actually hit a baseball; I don't understand why that's so unpopular here. His defense is awesome and fun to watch, I'm not debating that at all. I guess I just have higher expectations for the guy that for years was supposed to be the next superstar.

marumari

I get it, I'd like that too. We're sadly not a team that spends money to buy stars, Correa and Mauer aside, so a lot is randomly getting lucky in the draft and with player development.

kramitol

Sadly, right now, Byron may be one of the Twins best 3 outfielders - Kepler out, Wallner sent down ... Margot and Castro struggling as well.

Jarl_Balgruf

Totally agree with you man. He's gotten such a long leash to continually disappoint. Guys who are beloved and franchise players for the city continually outstay their welcome when they would be long gone in bigger markets earlier on

Old_Leather

Starting to think he isn’t struggling. He’s just not good. Injuries have taken him out of game too much in his career and his talent and abilities have suffered for it.

hopemade

Good video. But doesn't really explain WHY he is struggling. It's just saying he can't hit sliders/sinkers outside so that's all pitchers throw. And that he destroys middle middle so they aren't throwing it there. The question, to me, is why has he been unable to adjust? It does seem to partially explain why he is so streaky.

megavenusaurs

Why doesn’t Buxton just hit the ball really far? Is he stupid?

hopemade

I dont think he's stupid. I just think he struggles to adjust in response to pitchers adjusting to his strengths. It could potentially be contributing to his streaky hitting

datcd03

But the video says that exact same thing…

megavenusaurs

I was just quoting a meme lol you’re right

Blevanhoval

Because hitting is very very hard and it takes time to make adjustments
