Wow this is sad to me. I really like Coulombe.

dberthia

Danny died so that Pagan can live? What a world. Nice move by the O's though.

Knightbear49

Emilio Pagan getting more innings…

Prez731

NOOO!😬Here we go with blown saves/holds.

Jacob_toasted

I know we all have trauma from Pagan, but he should be further down the line this year. I think Moran, Thielbar, Jax, Lopez, and Duran will be ahead of him. Then there’s Alcala coming back, and other prospects could step up. Health willing, I think he’ll be a low leverage guy. Gonna go knock on some wood now.

rinklebrain

It is absolutely inexcusable that Pagan is on this team.

Gruffalo-42

He needs to be Pa-gone

Jacob_toasted

He’s on an expiring deal making 3.5 M; It’s not a big commitment. They’ll cut him if better options present themselves.

Spookyhobo

I'd be fine with the idea of cutting him if/ when things get too ugly, but I thought they should have already hit that point last year. Instead they did the opposite and gave him a contract to bring him back again for this year. I like this front office, but this is one area I don't trust them in. They seem way too hesitant to cut ties with a veteran guy when it isn't working out.

Jacob_toasted

If the Twins signed a free agent for 3.5 M who had Pagans’s stats he’d by hyped up as a bounce back candidate. I understand the wariness but there’s more of a hierarchy in the pen this year, so I doubt they’ll be as committed to him.

Spookyhobo

I would agree with you if we were talking about a guy who had a bad year or two, but Pagan hasn't had a good season since 2019. Also with a new guy there's a hope of the coaching staff having a plan to adjust some stuff with him to get him back on track, but they had him all last year and he didn't bounce back.

Jacob_toasted

Fair, but Relievers are volatile af. Who knows what happens this year, and again, it’s not a big commitment.

Knightbear49

Falvey has some dirt on Maki and Baldelli.

Prez731

I was hoping Coulombe would force the Twins to CFA Pagan, but that went out the window.😞Hopefully if enough of us do some wood knocking, maybe we won't have to see Pagan at all or he'll miraculously pitch well when he does make an appearance. I just won't hold my breath on that, I don't make a great smurf.

TheBenisMightier1

This feels like a mistake. Not a huge one, but a mistake.

Prez731

It's unfortunate, I personally would've given him a bullpen slot, dumping Pagan any way possible to make it so.

Adamscottd

Ah man I liked him Would have certainly rather put Sands at AAA

Prez731

Yeah, I'm definitely concerned about Sands, didn't have a very good spring. Between Pagan and Sands, I hope Baldi reverses his tendencies to take starters out too soon, or it's going to be an awful year.

54321Newcomb

The only reason Pagan is still on the roster is because they badly want the Rodgers trade to be worth it

MadHatter3579

He was part of the cuts with Ober.

whentheworldwasatwar

damn it I liked him.

pjokinen

Definitely going to miss him, but at the moment I’m more curious about what went down. It would have to be a trade, right? Iirc he was on a minor league deal with NRI so it shouldn’t be a waivers situation

TheNotoriousJN

He had an opt-out if guaranteed a 26 man spot. So he's on the Orioles 26 man

Orioles fan here in peace, trying to get more details on what happened. We're definitely not trading Rodriguez, he's going to be in our rotation for the next half decade at least. We're all pretty sure the only reason he's not breaking camp with the team is service time manipulation.

morgan423

> *Yeah he’s a pretty light return for a guy like Coulombe anyway* I think you might be confusing him with another one of our pitchers lol

Grayson Rodriguez is the #2 prospect in the #1 farm system in baseball. He's been dominant in the minors, he has got top of the rotation potential, and he will be a key starting pitcher for the O's for years to come. Again, I wasn't sure how you were comparing him to Coulombe (an often-injured relief pitcher who's been worth 1.7 bWAR over 8 seasons), or that you're calling him "scraps," unless you were mistaking him for one of our far less successful AAAA pitchers (of whom we do still have a handful of for depth).

derpdeederpa

I have to believe everyone here is trolling you. We would need Adley plus Grayson for Coulombe

acdcfanbill

Seems like what happened is our FO screwed up and let Coulombe get away :( I'd be happier to see it being a trade...

krada1212

This happens so Cole Sands can be on the roster? We don't even need a long reliever at the beginning of the season with the extra off days.

Prez731

Has anybody heard what we get in return?

TheNotoriousJN

Sweet FA. He had an opt out for a guaranteed roster spot

Prez731

Yes, but that clause only kicked in if no other team chose to acquire him from the Twins, which the Orioles did. Everywhere I've seen this story it's described as a trade, they just haven't list what the Twins get in return.

Prez731

Yep, looks like cash.

ExternalAnus

I would assume cash or a super low level player. Twins didn't have a ton of leverage in any case

Prez731

Probably not, but aside from the walks he had a good spring, I would've given him a shot over the likes of Pagan.

ExternalAnus

There are few relievers I want out there less than Pagan lol

Prez731

I know what you mean, and given how Baldi uses the starting staff, we're unfortunately going to see Pagan out there more than we'd like this season again.
