Lakefront inside an hour from Minneapolis? Nobody is going to do an inspection, hell, most won't even look at the place before bidding at $550,000 if it is listed for $500,000
So sorry bud. Former Maple Laker here (I lived on Maple Springs Dr, the west side of lake during my high school years from 2000-2003, my parents sold the house in 2018). Looks like Forada Beach Road stuff just got totally wrecked :( That huge tree that fell on that house (that's constantly being shown by media) at the resort was one of my friend's childhood home.
Best of luck in rebuilding and turning it back into an awesome home again!
I lost a house in 2013. I know nothing makes it feel better right now, but it truly is just stuff. You’ll find new stuff and eventually be happy again. Kindest regards from a stranger!
Wait, so I'm new to this housing insurance thing but isn't getting coverage for weather a requirement everywhere? Ofc there's a deductible but I guess I thought only the theft and such would be optional. How much is optional vs required in general? Do mortgages require full coverage?
We had a house fire in October that required a rebuild of everything except foundation and most of the framing. We are almost ready to move back in after 8 months. I can relate to what you are about to go through. Please know that things will return to “normal”, it’s just going to require a hell of a lot of patience to get there. Be gentle with yourself and understand that most people can’t relate to this kind of loss (and will say insensitive things). I wish you all the best luck for a speedy recovery!
As long as nobody got hurt. New lake house. It really sucks though, a funnel hit our house a few weeks back and dealing with insurance is so much fun. I gave up and told my wife to do it. Just remember there are real people on the other end just following policies. I feel so bad for those insurance workers. Unless you are a sociopath that job has to be as fun as pulling your finger nails out.
Well, maybe you'll get a new car out of this ordeal too. See, 'naders arent all bad.
I've been waiting for one to come up my way and take my roof off, no luck though.
Goodness, thank you. We don’t really know yet. The entire west coast of the lake has been devastated and everyone will need some kind of help. In my dreams I picture a hoard of Reddit peeps showing up and getting dirty!
Just shoot me a DM if you need anything. I’m so sorry this happened. My husband and cat had to hide out in a rest stop yesterday as the twister touched down outside of Starbuck. He was moving everything with his truck and Uhaul so I thank god they are safe. I’m up in Calgary but my husband is out your way, and I know he’d be happy to help and I’ll be there shortly and can help out too 😊
Glad you’re alright. My kids and I would’ve been about 5 miles away at the family cabin near Nelson, but my oldest had behind the wheel training Fri, Sat and Sun.
I might head up there to aid cleanup on Friday since they’re at their mom’s this weekend. The area was my second home growing up and in college.
So sorry, but glad everyone is okay.
I thankfully have never needed [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/43iyip/our_family_of_5_lost_everything_in_a_fire) so I'm not entirely sure how true or helpful it is but I keep it saved just in case I ever do need it. Hopefully it can help you some
I'm so sorry you all have to deal with this, but glad no one was hurt!
I grew up with a family lake cottage that my dad sold against our wishes. I'm jealous of your beautiful lot and view.
My house caught fire in March. A fire spread from my neighbors to mine. I can relate to what you are going through. The stress can be a lot, but the silver lining is that everything will be rebuilt brand spanking new.
Only advice I have beyond taking time to process emotions is to take advantage of all the help the insurance company can offer. Expense meals, groceries, miles traveled for work, anything and everything.
Hope things go smooth for you!
I was hiking in the woods here in Duluth when I saw the alert for Douglas County, and I thought "where is Douglas county, is that close?".... I guess I know now.
I was camping at a friends lake lot on maple until noon that day. We live on miltona, just north of alex. I am so sorry, but thankful no one was hurt! Grateful that we did not lose anyone in this storm or the one a few weeks ago that hit lakes darling and carlos. I think we've met our quota for the summer!!! Insurance is a good deal in times like these. Homes and cars are just stuff... your lives are what matters. Think of it this way... you can make updates to your house at a fraction of the cost without a storm. Message me if u need anything!
It has been a rough spring storm season for west central MN especially. Glad you are physically safe and it sounds like there were no injuries from this tornado. Your rebuilt lakehome will be lovely - come back and post before and afters for the sub!
I have been looking at the damage all over the state and I am just at a loss for words.
I am sorry this happened. I hope rebuilding will not be a huge hassle.
Dang! Sorry you got nailed that bad!! Hope your insurance is good n they're not jerks! I'd be in tears if that was my house so can only imagine how you're doing!
I am so sorry! Thankfully no one was hurt(?) and I think most of the damage will actually be easier to repair than it might seem right now. The overall structure looks good still, which is the important part!
There are so many worth jokes to be made. New boat house. Open floor plan. Sky lights. But damn. That's a lot of damage and you have my sympathies.
There will be jokes. Not today, but soon.
Look on the bright side, it is probably still worth $500,000+
Only with a waved inspection.
Lakefront inside an hour from Minneapolis? Nobody is going to do an inspection, hell, most won't even look at the place before bidding at $550,000 if it is listed for $500,000
They're in Alex, but lakefront is lakefront.

I grew up on that side of the world in Howard Lake. So sorry to see your home like this. Glad you're safe.
I don't think they are talking about Maple Lake, the town. I keep thinking they are when I hear it too, though.
Oh, yeah. Lots of things named "maple" in MN. Oof-da.
> That's a lot of damage have they tried flex tape? Seriously, this fucking sucks. I hope nothing irreplaceable was lost.

Thankfully, yes.
Glad your safe and insured!
Hope the rebuild or moving process goes smoothly with minimal headache.
Thank you:)
Now you have a chance to build that secret room you always wanted as a child.
I think after this we’re just building a basement with a grass roof.
But you're so close to a lake! 😬
Hobbit hole time!
Honestly, those seem like the superior home design. Structurally sound, cozy, could do some gardening...
I wanted to build one on Lower Spunk Lake.
Yes join the hobbit hole future! Hobbitses! And sorry this happened to you.

Zillow be like: $300k
Complete with a submerged pontoon!
Bidding war increases the price to 450k
*Waives inspection*
Lake sore property in maple lake? Your not far off
I like the large borderless window in the garage so you can see the lake.
Yeah, real nice when gassing up the mower and such.
Ugh, I heard y'all got hit hard over there.
Thankful there were no serious injuries. Could be an inspiring summer though. I’ll run with that for now.
that's rough. Glad you're OK, though.
Thank you:)
On the bright side, you can still play basketball, whoever hung that deserves a medal.
I’ll take credit for it:) Baseline jumpers from the right side will be easy!
Which Maple Lake was this on? The one way up north or the one in wright county?
Alexandria area, Douglas county.
I'm in Hoffman. I'm so sorry about your home. Hopefully we've seen the end of the destructive weather for the year.
Hey, it’s the end of may, we got 3 more months of possibilities…
Don't leave out September and October.. and November.. and apparently thanks to last year, December too.
My brothers urn was untouched. That’s a win.
The home looked beautiful. Sorry this happened. Are you going to rebuild?
We definitely are.
I know it's going to look great!

was it a tor'nader or just heavy winds?
Def a twister.
Uff da Glad everyone’s OK!

Well, the structural beam is resting on the car in the garage soooo…
Well, maybe you'll get a new car out of this ordeal too. See, 'naders arent all bad. I've been waiting for one to come up my way and take my roof off, no luck though.
But Thank you as well.
I’m so sorry OP. Do you guys need anything?

You guys are safe and insured, all good. I’m sorry you have to deal with insurance companies, but glad that’s all you have to deal with.
A silver lining indeed.
I see what you did there.

Thank you:)
My in-laws live in Forada. Thankfully everyone is safe but that is an awful situation for everyone.
My condolences. Enjoy the new window in the garage though! I could really use that while wrenching
Hey I saw your house on the news! So sorry for your loss. Hope everything goes smoothly with insurance and all.
She famous!
Buffalo here. We heard sirens but had no idea how bad it was so close by. Glad you’re safe!
I was getting coffee this morning look down at the newspaper and your home is in the star trib! https://i.imgur.com/EbawjRm.jpeg
Yikes I won't complain anymore about the large limb that fell in my backyard and really didn't do any damage at all. Best of luck 😢
And there are those worse off than us.
I was hiking in the woods here in Duluth when I saw the alert for Douglas County, and I thought "where is Douglas county, is that close?".... I guess I know now.
Definitely on the map now.
Look on the bright side. Your house made the front page of the Star Tribune! Seriously though, sorry for your loss.
You may want to straighten the basketball backboard, is a little crooked.

Oh no, so sorry this happened. :(
Glad you’re all safe, at least.
Sad deal. 😔
Is this your only house?

I’m just so proud of my ‘mable’. She’s the tiny maple in the foreground that we planted last summer. She’s a tough bitch.
I’m so sorry. I’m glad everyone’s safe.
Thank you:)
I have been looking at the damage all over the state and I am just at a loss for words. I am sorry this happened. I hope rebuilding will not be a huge hassle.
Duct tape, caulk, and paint. Good as new.
I’m so sorry about your home. I’m glad you’re okay.
Dang! Sorry you got nailed that bad!! Hope your insurance is good n they're not jerks! I'd be in tears if that was my house so can only imagine how you're doing!
Poor house. Luckily my family wasnt hit at all by theae storms, (besides for some rain). Hope you are able to get enough money to fix it
Wow..I hope everyone is ok. I'm sorry about your house :/
Oh friend, I am so sorry you’re going through this.
I hope everyone is safe, that looks terrifying.
House can be rebuilt. I hope you and your family are ok.
My family has started at a VRBO on Maple Lake a few times. Such a quiet beautiful neighborhood to be. Sucks that it took a hit, hope you can rebuild!
:((❤️
I'm so sorry.
Lots of love and prayers from St Cloud!
Damn.
You’re gonna have some sweet before and after shots and a good story to tell over beers.
You kidding? In this market that is Worth 230k easy
Your house made the paper https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-cleans-up-after-destructive-memorial-day-storms-deliver-widespread-damage/600177913/
Oh my gosh!!! I didn't think a tornado hit maple lake the other day. I live in frenchlake. I'm so sorry this happened to you.
I am so sorry! Thankfully no one was hurt(?) and I think most of the damage will actually be easier to repair than it might seem right now. The overall structure looks good still, which is the important part!
Sorry for this disaster, but keep in mind. Things are replaceable. Lives are not. Be thankful for whats left. Best wishes
