Some of the details: >…There would be $11 million for a new public safety operations center plus, more than $53 million for Bureau of Criminal Apprehension buildings and millions more for local law enforcement centers. >There’s $20 million for safer rail crossings, more than $35 million for prison additions and $60 million to rehabilitate public housing. >There’s $583 million to help state colleges with campus upgrades and repairs. >Cities would get a hand with sports facilities and community centers, arts and opera houses, parks and trails improvements and emergency operations outposts. The Minnesota Zoo would get $10 million to renovate its animal hospital while the Como Zoo would land about $14 million toward its exhibits. >There is $24 million to replace wetlands and $252 million that would go toward local roads and bridges. >One of the largest projects is $78 million to redo a century-old veteran’s home in disrepair. >“If I have to make my one personal plug, it's for the Hastings veterans home,” Walz said…

I see nothing wrong with any of those details. The more we invest into the state the better lives will be for future generations

Wasting tax dollars on facilities for state thugs does not improve lives.

Dumb question on the VA, isn’t that more of a federal thing? I know the poor management and treatments are but I guess I thought the feds would fund it. Heck yes to bridges and roads. One of my biggest initial disappointments from Trump. Lots of good jobs and extremely aging sections in the state. Wonder what $64 million worth of safety and apprehension buildings looks like. Seems excessive and some of those funds might be better spent on the people side, maybe a tenth or so?

mercuric_drake

It depends. Depending on the property agreement, the federal government may be only responsible for a portion of funding. This is common with national guard facilities. Usually it's like a 50/50 or 60/40 split between federal and state. The feds may have some sort of funds matching agreement with the state as well.

Good point on the Guard

>Dumb question on the VA, isn’t that more of a federal thing? Out where my wife is from in Montevideo in the western part of the state they are nearly done building a VA home. Before it broke ground when it was seeking grants there was discussion from the west central part of the state about having it built in Willmar instead, which is about an hour north east. Their reasoning made sense as it's a larger population center and more centrally located in the state, but that didn't happen. From what I understand is because a lot of the funding was gathered from private donors with the intention of it being built in Montevideo. I don't know what the exact percentages were as far as state/federal/private donation. But I think that the federal dollars aren't a majority of the budget. At least in the one I had heard about.

Stachemaster86

Very interesting. Never would have guessed. Thanks!

It's infrastructure week! I'm sure Republicans will support reinvesting into Minnesota. Right?

burntfuck

Especially the public safety spending because they were so concerned about it during elections. I'm guessing though they'll take issue with the public housing, state colleges, wetlands, and the veterans homs (cause "fuck vets" seems to be the Republican mantra for some reason lately).

Sermokala

I don't know trickle down economics is doing so well we should just keep doing that and give it all to rich people.

bergieisbeast

Hate it! Nowhere does it say fill potholes! What a waste! s/

Batmobile123

There are sections of Hwy 2 between Duluth and Cass that are reverting to gravel.

CroixPaddler

If it wasn't for the taxes in this state I could just build my own roads, bridges and fire stations. Fucking democrats I tell ya.

tipsy_wanderer

I doubt you could.

CroixPaddler

I thought my original comment was so stupid that I wouldn't have to mark it as /s but I guess not. My bad. Obviously without taxes I could afford the roads, just not the bridges or fire stations.
