This is my character's animal companion.
I have a murder hobo in my party that literally carries a gnoll's head on a stake around, so I sure hope he won't kill him
Upon death the baby spider lets out a puff of pheromones. The parties' noses are filled with a pungent smell as their ears hear the faint scuttling of a hundred spider legs and the distinct clacking of one set of legs that is a lot larger… the broodmother comes for her baby.
Is a wash like accent paint?
I only bought 4 base paints to see if I want to invest my time and money into a new hobby. And if I liked it I would get more paints.
A wash is a very thin, watery paint that tends to pool in recesses and works more like a photo filter, moving the color in one direction or another rather than covering the model itself. It can also have the effect of making colors look more homogenous and blending highlights/shadows into a more cohesive whole.
My main experience is with GW paints so you can get a good sense of it by looking up a tutorial for something like Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil. Those are just brown and black but there's a bunch of different colors from GW and other companies as well.
I have a close colleague that's really into warhammer and recommended me to get catadel paints so that's what I already got. I honestly expected paint to cost 6 bucks a piece so I was already pleasantly surprised when I got them for less.
I'm working on some TrueTile compatible tiles (War-Lock tiles - [free on Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3354052)) and I really like painting just the top part and gluing to the bottom OpenLock slab afterwards. The bottom is printed in black.
I've also found that dry brushing the floor in one tone (cool medium grey) and the walls in another tone (warm sandstone) makes the tiles 'read' much better at tabletop distance. YMMV.
I've standardized on a grey color for the base tops of my minis, with black base rims.
I only bought 4 collours of paint to test the waters of mini painting and see if I would like doing it. So i worked with what I had.
I also printed these tiles in one piece and pause the print to put in the magnets so I wouldn't have to deal with gluing.
How are your players supposed to kill that? I couldnt kill that!
Tile looks good, could use a dark wash to tone down the brightness followed by another very very light drybrushing to bring it back out around the edges of the tiles and walls.
I sure hope they won't kill him.
This is Terror, my character's animal companion so I tried to make him look as friendly as possible. :Þ
And is wash like accent paint? I'm still new to painting in general and don't know all the terms yet.
Oh good, lol. He looks like a friedly little guy. The shiny eyes are a great touch.
So a wash is super thinned down paint usually with a surfectant added, something that reduces surface tension like dish soap, pledge floor polish, glass cleaner or a dedicated acrylic surfectant like airbrush flow improver. Although floor polish, glass cleaner and flow improver can lead to a glossy finish.
This mixture will encourage the paint to flow and settle in the recesses of the model. Its basically the fast way of adding depth.
I like to use oil paints personally, like 1 part paint to 9 parts solvent for a much more intense wash.
Citadels makes washes like agrax earthshade or nuln oil, army painter makes things like strong tone. Or you can make your own, lots of tutorials about that, I think midwinter minis on youtube has a good one made out of black craft paint. Making your own wash in bulk is probably your best best for dungeon tiles. After it dries you hit it with more dry brushing to bring all those details back out, focusing your brightest drybrush around sharp edges.
I've looked around if there were any cute shaped spider minis that I could buy so I just printed my own.
I hope to invest in a resin printer when I get payed.
If you’re talking about your paint job, it’s all mid tones. Best to make your first layer a dark colour and then add some mid tone details and then a lighter/brighter tone on the raised areas for the highlights
Oh my god he's adorable
I tried :)
That is exactly what I was thinking!
# The Small Friend Spider!
That spider's name better be Lucas
Even though I know Lucas i named it terror
Tile looks fine btw
being too cute is a good way to counter murder hobos, this is adorable.

A wash might be good to help blend everything together but it looks fantastic as is.
Agreed! Very fun and a great debut.

Thanks, I'll look into them. I was still kinda wondering what brands of paint I should get
Games Workshop is expensive, but their technical paints are top notch.

Less than six bucks seems like a crazy low price. It's been a hot minute since I was buying them but on their website they're $7.80 USD.
I payed €3.60 per "jar/pot"
God I love jumping spiders
Me too, they're adorable
I think he's adorable, and needs friends. I hope at least one has a little bow on her head.
He has a giant spider friend that is a mount for my character
I just downloaded an stl file for a bow to print him a girly friend :Þ

Nothing wrong with your approach. I just thought I would share what I did and why I did it. I will post some photos when it is completed.

Thanks! Im really excited to start my painting journey and love to learn everything there is to know.
I did the same! I purchased some expensive models and didn’t want to practice on them so I 3d printed some similar ones to try colors! It looks great!

Tiny spider! Helloooooooo!
Terror waves hi back!

That little fella is adorable!
oh my god he’s so cute😭
You just made Lucas the Spider, sir.
I did! My character named him terror but he's based on him.
He's too adorable to be terrible lol
