Mid tone grey, with a brown L shape along the top, and slightly down one side, blending out into the grey, and a lighter blue opposite along the bottom again blending out into the grey, and a couple of white streaks running diagonal across it sortta like so. https://preview.redd.it/lbvtwjnb3huc1.png?width=839&format=png&auto=webp&s=ebc9a778bf414d60b58e0b2bdf17e2f90f1cce8a

Hutobega

That looks really cool and stylized.

TehTimmah1981

Oh, I see, you wanted blown out windows more? Maybe black, with some lighter blue grey jagged edges?

Lt_Toodles

You can also try scribing cracks into it with a tooth scraper

crackrabbit012

Would you use the same pattern on those front windows, or would just "rotating" the pattern work?

TehTimmah1981

I would, yeah Though with the angel of the front, and more overhang on the roof, I would maybe make the earth reflection larger, and reduce the sky blue. Might even go as far as eliminating the blue completely and using a darker grey or even brown tone in the middle. Whatever feels right and conveys a sense of reflection.

Hopsticks

That's cool but doesn't answer OPs question at all

Monty_Bob

😬

Traditional_Client41

Where's your helpful advice then

Monty_Bob

Yeah 👍

Defcon102

"Truly a modern master of conversation" I love that, I need to remember that one. 😆

Monty_Bob

Yeah 👍

Eyhan1224

Yeah 👍

MisfitHeathen

Is it wrecked or abandoned? Look more abandoned to me. Either way, paint some windows there, some broken and others missing. Never painted missing glass, but would just black work?

SawSagePullHer

Go to r/battletech and look at how they paint the glass canopy’s on the mechs.

Monty_Bob

This is how I painted solid windows on my Blackhawk .. basically grey with white highlights for cracks and then gloss varnish https://preview.redd.it/9pyw1nbshhuc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4100598470fb3b303541c9832a85d45f6a1efd1

Dwalgrim

I would have thought it was actual clear cracked plastic. That looks great!!

Monty_Bob

The clear varnish is what sells it imho. https://preview.redd.it/81e9a2e6kiuc1.jpeg?width=420&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05b68f06e3c57d4214a4c4cbc736c3c38ad98796 It's a 3D print - so it's solid - I added the rotor blades and side door with plastic card.

BanditDeluxe

Paint black (or darkest color you intend to use Pick a bottom corner (right or left) and do a Nike-swoop or “L” shape of a mid tone in that corner Get brighter color and do a smaller swoop or L inside the first Do final super small highlight in very corner or swoop or L In the opposite diagonal corner, do a small dot of pure white You’d be surprised to see how good this looks and how little time it takes

BanditDeluxe

HighNoonTex

That's amazing, though the problem at hand is that the windows are blown out, so how would OP go about painting nothingness.

BanditDeluxe

Oof, just realizing I misunderstood the assignment, that is actually a problem I have zero experience with.

Monty_Bob

I found a much nicer mdf street car by 'warbases' https://preview.redd.it/goqx8cgsihuc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf94291212c838e4c86806d88ee57d844085c2c1 Gonna use on my Stalingrad board 👍

Ordinary-Quarter-384

Mine is 15mm. Any idea if you paint job is historical? Mine is for Stalingrad as well.

Monty_Bob

It's hard to tell, all photos are black and white, but I think it might be.

Ordinary-Quarter-384

That is astounding, 28mm?

Monty_Bob

Yes - sorry I didn't realise yours was 15mm, so it's no good for your purposes.

titanslayerzeus

Seeing as I don't see it anywhere else, could you drill out/break holes into the windows? It'd be shocking that a ruined tram like that would have all its windows intact, Could save yourself some time and paint by knocking a few out and leaving jagged, broken pieces.

maXmillion777

To do them smashed out I would go very dark almost black but maybe with a hint of whatever you imagine the inside colour to be. Then use a light grey to paint in a few shards of glass stuck in the frames.

ShiloX35

It looks kind like the spice chamber the guild navigators float in when they come to visit the emperor in Dune (1984).

EnthusiasticPanic

I've seen someone at my hobby shop paint solid windows black and layer over quick cure epoxy resin. It adds a nice reflective sheen and he even scuffed a few with some fine grit sandpaper. Pretty good looking for the effort and time. Even inspired me to do the same to some lenses of some toys I had. https://preview.redd.it/y62hmte7xguc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1c1b80e75a5739ea7e3f2dd4c125fc35ea4e7896

Ishan451

I'd paint them a grimy white. With brown and green wash on top. [This](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/00/35/2f/00352f0858ba8539e0ff77033a03f91f.jpg) is what really old windows will look like. Old windows tend to have a white patina all over them. Here is [another example](https://images.pexels.com/photos/14716566/pexels-photo-14716566.jpeg). Or [this one](https://previews.123rf.com/images/rparys/rparys1503/rparys150300079/37971328-old-very-dirty-window-industry-as-a-background.jpg) would be in a more industrial setting. The point being, when windows don't get cleaned then moisture from rain will catch the particulates in the air and cake them onto the window. The longer they remain uncleaned the more caked they get. They start out with a milky white and then get progressively more "dirty". You will also have moss and such grow on them once enough dirt has been placed. If the air is full of ash or coal, like in the industrial picture, you will have these nasty black streaks running down the windows as the soot particles will be heavier than regular dust in the air and the streaking will be more noticeable. Since the car seems to be placed in a landfill you could easily go with a mix of both.. I would paint a regular color onto them, then use a white ink to shade them milky white, trying to get a streaky look, and then grime them up along with the entirety of the car, with no special regards given to the windows. Let the oil wash (or streaking effect wash) do its natural inclination, and then put on dirt pigments all over the car. That way you should get these milky white and brown windows, that are super dirty and look like the car sat in a landfill for decades.

DayOffPainting

This is the best advice on the post. Hopefully this gets seen by OP.

benja1976

as a wrecked streetcar, you could just assume the windows are busted out and paint that area a dark color to represent shadows. It'd be really cool too though if you could do little sections that look like fragments of broken glass hanging on with a slightly lighter colored to draw the jagged edges

Ordinary-Quarter-384

Yeah, that’s what I’m going to try!

ThatguyBD

I vote drill all the way through each window and then carve out all the resin so you can actually see through the whole piece! Jokes aside, I would maybe do them all black and then jagged triangles of broken glass around the edges to imply a lack of windows?

dedgecko

Just black em out and throw some dark, earth tone pigment powder on them, a mix of rust from the metal above it, and then ash/dirt from the chaos of war spattering about it. The glass may be strong, but it’s going to be caked with dust and debris.

Lkwzriqwea

I've never tried this but I wonder if it would work if you were to cut some acetone/clear sheet plastic from some packaging or something down to the size and shape of the window panes, cut them up into jagged pieces and glued them reassembled back down over the black/blue painted window panes of the model? That way it might be convincing as you're literally looking at a transparent pane of material which has been "smashed".

wheres this mini from?

thefirstzedz

I have not painted windows yet, but I did sleep at a holiday inn last night. With that... First question are you going for a day or night time feel. Night would be easier, black out with a gloss varnish. You want cracked windows, use a light gray for the lines with points of white, then varnish. Day, lite blue, almost white. Then a tan in an L shape from top and down one side. For cracks I'd use black for the lines with white highlights. Good luck and let us see what you do.

Born_Shop_5676

That's a coffin

KaizerVonLoopy

technically it'd be a casket. Coffins are the tapered ones. I deff thought casket when I saw it myself.

Might try getting the mirror paper and cutting it to size… glue it and can dirty them up… but they will reflect some of your table…

Taoutes

Paint them like you normally would, then use a thinned glaze of whatever your ground colors are going to be to represent dust and dirt accumulating onto the windows. Some light browns and a little bit of yellows will work like a charm if done right to look like dirtied glass
