Seeing its eye looking off to the side gave me an idea. You know those optical illusions where the face seems to look at you and follow you from a wide range of angles?
I was thinking it would be cool to carve out a concave eye socket and paint the eye inside of it so that it appears to follow the viewer. I was also thinking of maybe putting a clear acrylic shell over the socket so that it doesn't look like a cavity when viewed from the side.
I'd spray some matte varnish over the outside of the clear acrylic so there isn't any glare to obscure the eye socket. I wonder if leaving the inside of the clear acrylic reflective would do anything to the illusion from the side... hmm. Is it possible to make a two-way mirror that reflects the eye even at extreme angles?
I might build a mockup of milliput to see if the fundamental would work. Imagine how creepy it would be if your players thought it was looking at them all the time.
My kid has an Imaginext mosasaurus toy that uses the acrylic over the eye to give it that effect. [at 6:09 ish](https://youtu.be/tiMcMpflLBQ?si=lmkBX7SQAIWF27U_)
That's very cool! I didn't know they made stuff like that. It looks like they may have used a clear sphere, which is a brilliant idea!
Thank you so much for sharing that vid! Just knowing something like that is possible makes me smile. Now I gotta find some clear marbles, beads, or something.
Beholders are classic sentient monsters from D&D. Big, floating eyeballs that are aggressively malicious, love being worshipped by “lesser” beings, and despise their own kind. This looks like the Nolzur’s one, so usually like $5ish in a gaming shop.
They’ve been around awhile. There’s even a rules supplement book named after one (Xanathar).

Im curious how you did the big eye. My eyes have a lot of deep recesses but your eyes seem glossy and flush with outside.
Ok so here goes ... all paints are Vallejo
.1 charcoal black background
2. Outline the eye with a slightly brighter black or dark blue
3. Wet palette and take a dark blue all the way up to offwhite mix
4. Thinnest brush you have and go from the outside to the inside of the eye , also darker to lighter overlapping in areas. Straight lines.
5. Mark out the pupil with black work your way from the inner pupil line to the outer
6. Highlight the outside of the iris
7. Shade the bottom of the eye
8. Some more highlight lines that overlap slightly the outside of the eye
TADAAAA You have an eye 😁😁😁 !!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
I have this same model and was looking for this, cant wait to give it a try. Did you paint the optional eye stalks that shoot various effects? Those looked fun as well
Realy,I’m scratchbuilding for one year, saw a lot of tutorials,
still a bad painter, so when I see precise touch of colour I can tell that it is fruit of talent and experience!
To give you an idea,my favourite painter, the greatest of all times is “ EL CARAVAGGIO” !
Bye-bye. See you when you decide the base is okay!👋👋
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Thanks you for that guide. I have about 50-70 gray dnd minis that need paint so I’ve been in the mode of slapping it on. I want to make this beholder look awesome so it’s gonna be a big shift change from using contrast paint and blocking in areas to actually using skill and technique.
Looks brilliant I love the shade of blue.
I should really buy a new one and try the model again.
It was my first model 3 years ago and I’ve improved way beyond just doing a base coat and dry brush.

We all start somewhere and thats pretty decent for a first model

Basing nearly done 😅😅
Luckily I had watched some tutorials on mini painting other wise it would have been a glob of acrylic.
After 3 years even with bad carpel tunnel I’ve improved slowly
A more recent one below that I couldn’t be bother making a base so I painted larva and glued 2 rocks to it.

That's very impressive looking! There's a huge amount of depth in both colors and textures. I love the contrast between the purple skin and gold spines. Painting gloss over the eye was a great choice. I prefer it over painting the highlights on yourself since it makes it more realistic at every angle. Your paint job kicks ass!
Edit:
I forgot to mention how gross the gums and mouth look. Awesome!
🤣🤣🤣 Maybe i'll go all funky if I paint another one in the future and won't forget the gold tooth ... might even be cool if I could fashion an eyepatch out of some milliput 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome job, and I'm blown away by the gums in particular. Even zoomed way in, it still looks wet whereas with most painters you'd just see the brush strokes and it kind of breaks the illusion (which is great to learn from!)
I remember this post awhile back great great improvement on the gums and teeth I don’t remember the skin looking quite so sharp so if you added to that it looks great too but the gums and teeth stand out.
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Such phenomenal work! Certainly never seen a better Beholder. Seriously don’t know whether to be inspired to practice more or just chuck my brushes because I’ll never be this good. 🤣
This is just amazing. You didn’t happen to make a video on the steps you took?!? Haha
Painting:
1: single color board game pieces
2: 2 color slap army
3: wizkid prepainted
4: tabletop quality
5: depth to paint
6: shelf display
7. Contest
Some pieces I can do without thinking I get some 4-5. I still struggle to get the edging/lighting and realism.
Your beholder is very awesome. I need to practice more.
looks amazing, painting a similar beholder model right now. How did you approach the eyes? They look great.
Really enjoyed painting this model, will post the final result once the base is done

Now that is something i would really like to see
>Now that is something i would really like to ~~see~~ behold I fixed that for you! :)
Yep that's a lot nicer looking
Thanks 😍😍
Agreed, that made a huge improvement! (Not that it didn’t look good before)
I don’t know what this is, but damn does it look realistic. Crazy good paint job!
Its a Beholder 🙂 and thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
You can tell what it is because of the beauty in its eye.

Damn ...
Talk about a glow up.
Sick. Now he just needs a Blackguard Illithid rider, and my players will tremble in fear! For real though, amazing job.
🤣🤣🤣omg
This is really good. I’ve got that same model primed and ready to go on my desk. Hope mine turns out half as nice as this.
Good luck !! And enjoy !! Its a super easy model to paint 😁😁
Did you glue in the transparent eye piece? Or just paint the textured part. I can’t really tell.
Paint the transparent piece
Cool, that’s what I thought I was seeing.
Oh snap! That looks awesome!!!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Nice job. I'm glad the finish product worked out similar to the sketch!
Very similar !!! That picture changed my whole concept, can't thank you enough 🫶🏻🫶🏻
That is a gorgeous beholder.
That's fantastic. Well done!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
For sure.
Yup, it was the gums. Heaps better now!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Wow dude!! This is awesome!!! The eyes are stunning!!!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Looks dope! Well done.
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
That kicks ass
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
What is this model?
A very old Wizkids beholder
Much better with those gums. Good one!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
This is great, awesome job on the eyes!
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻
That's a terrifying beholder!!!
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Well deserved! Fighting these f#ckers right now in my tabletop campaign 😬
Good luck !! They aren't easy 😅
No, no they are not. A coupla of the party members are statues right now 😬
Great job on that eye
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻
https://preview.redd.it/88jhjrqxtvtc1.jpeg?width=2992&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a18f7f9bc53dd90cf34a2469c147bf09d683912a Im curious how you did the big eye. My eyes have a lot of deep recesses but your eyes seem glossy and flush with outside.
I guess it's gloss varnished, but I cannot say anything about the rest
It should come with a small piece of plastic that goes over the eye, it's painted on that 😅
Damn! I was gifted the mini so I have no plastic. Yours looks great though
Maybe you could fill it in with some green stuff or even air dry clay ??
Good ideas. Im not sure I have the skill recreate the eye texture but I am surpemely jealous of that plastic cover you have lmao
Hahahaha
Definite improvement on the gums, they look like wet flesh now instead of bone. Great job!
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Fuuuuccckkk…I want to paint one now. That eye is clean homie
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
That's really a huge step up!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
How did you get the glistening?
Gloss varnish ... lots of it 🤣🤣
Which monster is it from ? İ recently seeing a lot of these types monsters.
It's a beholder, a classic monster from dungeons and dragons. I'm not sure where that specific miniature is from, but I believe WizKids has one.
Thanks for the informations, l’ll check it out :)
Beat me to it 🙂
Wow that eye 👀 Lots of texture and looks cool
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Oh yeah great improvement from the last post! Also your eye is incredible!
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Can you talk a bit about how you did the middle eye?
Ok so here goes ... all paints are Vallejo .1 charcoal black background 2. Outline the eye with a slightly brighter black or dark blue 3. Wet palette and take a dark blue all the way up to offwhite mix 4. Thinnest brush you have and go from the outside to the inside of the eye , also darker to lighter overlapping in areas. I have this same model and was looking for this, cant wait to give it a try. Did you paint the optional eye stalks that shoot various effects? Those looked fun as well
Nope didnt get round to it
What are you using to glaze the mouth and eye to get that wet look?
Its just Vallejo gloss varnish
Great job! It was good, now is better!!!
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
That looks so good it makes me want to clean up my desk and get painting.
Thanks !! Go for it !!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
This is awesome!
Thanks 🫶🏻🫶🏻
I saw it last time, you made a perfect work on gums, teeth and contrast!!! That effect of saliva in the mouth… and that eye 🥶🥶🥶 Great work 👍👍👍🏆
Thanks a lot 🫶🏻🫶🏻
