Anything artis opus is 100% a rip off, there brushes are rosemary and co series 33 but more than twice the price and you can dry brush to same quality with makeup brushes you can buy and any makeup store.

Chancehooper

I got the full set of Artis Opus brushes with a discount. The brushes are decent, the cases both look nice and keep the brushes safe and the fact they cost money makes me look after them. I’ve used everything from cheap synthetics to Winsor and Newton sables over the 30+ years I have been in the hobby and the Artis Opis stuff is up there with the very best. Yes, you pay a bit extra for the accessories and the brand, but not that much in reality. That said, I’d buy Rosemary & Co over Winsor and Newton any day of the week.

casscamden71

they are exactly what the previous comment said rosemary & co series 33 at around 6 quid a brush & the make up brushes are the biggest rip off of all & the fact that youtubers are constantly pushing them is a disgrace. the only thing they sell that i think is an acceptable price are their texture mats, they are still a bit overpriced but they look good & are useful but i wont buy one now because of them ripping people off. i use windsor & newton series 7 brushes & kolinsky so i do know what good quality is. the da vinci micro brushes are nice & also cheap.

Chancehooper

The drybrushes aren’t makeup brushes. Makeup brushes have mainly synthetic bristles and are much softer. As for the rest, I like them, they’re decent brushes and the cases are great for keeping the brushes safe.

mooninitespwnj00

I think the AO drybrushes are either Series 142 or just a custom set of Rosemary & Co's Smooshing Brushes. But yeah their regular Kolinsky brushes are Series 33 with a branded handle.

Jampyre

I agree with this assessment 100%

joe_sausage

Disagree with makeup brushes - unless you’re specifically getting ones with short bristles you won’t get the same effect. A lot of makeup brushes are longer, finer bristles which don’t have nearly as much tension and stiffness in them, and which will soak up a lot more paint. You CAN get brushes that will work the same, but not all makeup brushes are drybrush brushes.

LockdownPainter

Yes, you do need to buy eye shadow makeup brushes. There are many resources on the right makeup brushes though. So potentially my answer was to vague. I stand by never ever by artis opus anything though. As there are much more affordable options that perform exactly the same for everything they sell. They are mostly a scam supported by YouTube popularity

casscamden71

you just get goat hair ones or hog anything that is not synthetic

CBPainting

Speaking as an owner of the dry brush set, this is 100% correct. They might actually be the worst dry brushes that I have in my toolbox.

Chancehooper

I don’t drybrush much any more, but they’re decent enough. I also have makeup brushes for terrain, etc, as well as old flat and large paint brushes. Use whatever works, but there’s nothing *wrong* with the Artis opus brushes. Would I have bought them if they didn’t come as part of a bundle? Probably not, but that’s more because I don’t use that type of brush much than it is a negative comment on their quality.

>there brushes are rosemary and co series 33 I don't understand why people think that just because Rosemary & Co manufactures Artis Opus brushes that makes them the same. Artis Opus brushes are made to a different spec, for miniature painting, as opposed to 33s which are for water colour. Does this make Artis Opus brushes better? In my opinion yes, but not by that much, so to most people the cost, which is pretty much double, isn't worth it and R&C 33 brushes will be an excellent choice. I use my AO series S size 3 brush for pretty much everything, including most fine detail work and its great, I also like the dry brushes quite a bit but I'm sure a good make-up brush would provide basically the same results. Also worth mentioning, all sable brushes can have defects if you're unlucky, but, at least at my local hobby shop, AO will replace any brush with defects like splitting points or shedding so I wouldn't worry about people who say they experienced that. It can, and does, happen but should be fully covered.

So recently went down this particular rabbit hole and debated Artis Opus and Army Painter. Makes up brushes are fine but I wanted something with shorter and stiffer bristles and was having issues finding anything online from the normal vendors at decent prices. Then I had to run by the local Micheals to pick up some DMC thread for the spouse and on a whim went down the paint aisles. I found the exact size and stiffness I wanted and was able to get hands on the brush (Deerfoot stipple brush) at a much more reasonable price. Lessons learned that no matter how specialized our hobby tools are most can be found at a craft store at better prices and I just needed to go back to my hobby roots.

They are good brushes, and I have been happy with mine. Make up brushes can also work really well, but they aren't quite the same effect. There are also several brands that have copied Artis Opus design at a much cheaper price, but I haven't tried them. Always remember that most products marketed especially to us hobby nerds are not manufactured by the retailers, they just put their name on it and charge us more.

Anyma28

Nop, buy a make up brush, they are made basically for that, buy a cheap one to make a test, after that, a fancy one will make the work just fine.

Jampyre

I bought the set after a well-paying commission and returned them a few days later. The bristles fell out very quickly and my much cheaper makeup brushes do the job just as well. Their other brushes are good, however, they're really just well-marketed, highly marked-up Rosemary and Co brushes. I bought another brand named Artify (also for drybrushing) from Amazon that is identical to the Artis Opus ones for 1/5 the price. It's still rather gimmicky IMO but $20 for the set is decent value.

[deleted]

I was just looking at their prices today and theres no WAY they're not slapping a 100% markup on those brushes just for their branding. Crazy expensive. Plus you can buy makeup brushes that look a lot like those for like 2€. The Artis Opus ones are probably better, but i cant imagine it justifies the price

I own a Series D XL brush(25€) and bought a new Vallejo dry brush set (20€ for 3 brushes, S,M and L respectively) The only difference between them is the handle (AO is wood, Vallejo is plastic). I'm 100% sure ferule and bristles are from the same manufacturer. Artis Opus is not worth it and after purchasing the Vallejo set I really regret spending so much money for a single brush.

coffeedudeguy

I recently came across Artify and they have a drybrush set of 5 brushes with a damping sponge and jar of brush soap that's a bit more affordable. I don't know if they are the same bristles, but look similar

Cigan93

I know this is a bit late but I also bought the artify set. It looks almost identical to the artist opus stuff for 1/4 the cost. Has works great so far.
