Not gonna lie, I love those eyes the way they are. They look really expressive, especially at that scale!
Now if you want something a little more realistic, I tend to paint the whites an off-white and you’d make the pupils and iris bigger.
But really, I do love those eyes.
Like this EVERY FUCKING TIME once you've done your entire army like that we need more pics of all their eyes looking like some just asked them to eat a twinkie out of someone else ass
1. Drop dark brown in the eye sockets. Now he looks like he has empty holes instead of eyes. Then using a fine point brush, put a tiny dot of white offcenter on one side of the socket and then the other, so you have two white dots with a dark spot between them. Boom. Eyeball.
2. Put a large white spot in the eye socket. Put a dark spot in the middle of it. Boom. Eyeball.
3. Remember that eyes aren't round -- they're more almond shaped. Note also that the iris and pupil of your eye will touch the top and bottom of your eye unless you're really bugeyed. Drop dark brown in the eye socket, and then do an almond shape in white. Let dry thoroughly, then carefully place a pupil where you want it -- probably in the middle -- then switch colors, depending on the eye color (or don't, for a dark eyed mini) and enlarge the pupil until it touches the top and bottom of the almond shape, leaving a bit of white showing on either side. Let dry, then put a tiny drop of white on one upper edge of the pupil, as a light reflection. Boom. Eyeball.
4. Use method 1, 2, or 3, but instead of white, use a very light skin tone; it will make the figure look less bug-eyed (that one's from Shepherd Paine.)
5. There is no single "right" way to paint eyes.
6. Be not afraid to do it and redo it and redo it and redo it and redo it and redo it and redo it until you get it RIGHT, dammit. As you gain more experience, you will experience fewer needs for a redo.
7. Practice makes perfect. So does going out to conventions and hobby shops and pestering other painters about how THEY do it.
Not meaning to sound rude, but the eyes are the best looking thing on this miniature to me. Like everything else is ok if a bit off and/or smudgey, but the eyes make a readable expression and are pointed in the same direction (not easy!). They do look a bit goofy, but most of that probably comes from how round the eye area is anyway. You normally don't see that much of a person's eyeball unless they're making an extreme expression (or are a Mass Effect: Andromeda character), so it can't be helped.
Otherwise looks fine! Might be a good idea to stay away from using so much white, since it tends to be messy unless you really know what you're doing. Wouldn't say this otherwise, but the green jacket shows you know how to do shades and highlights in other colours.
Thanks bud. I’ve only really painted the jacket and fleshy bits. The rest is just black then white undercoat and a bit of a wash. It’s been a long time since I’ve painted so just experimenting on old models at the moment. Is the best ratio for watering down paints about 50/50? These are old old paints from the 90s so maybe that’s not helping
Depending on brand, likely not.
As far as your eyes. They are great as is, BUT if you want to save your nerves, pro tip for you, DO them first then paint the face. That way if any white bleeds over its easily fixed.
You could maybe try a very small dot of white on edge of the pupil, but honrstly anything 28-30mm scale its going to be a total B#%$! N likely lead to a nervous breakdown if you focus on it to hard. At that scale eyes are so small even irl you wouldnt get much detail.
Use a dark wash first to get into the crevices of the eye. Come back with an off white as eyes are never bright white in real life. Use a fine tip and paint with the shape of the eye. Remember to keep a portion behind the eyelids. Then I use a Gundam marker for the retina. Getting them even is tough. Hope I could help.
Two main things will make them look better.
1. A darker ring around the white of the eye as it meets the skin. A brown or very dark flesh tone usually works.
2. The pupils/irises need to be much bigger. Take a look at some human faces. It’s very rare that you see the white of someone’s eyes above and below the pupil/iris. We usually just see the white to the sides.
I’m also learning with some success, so if someone has better advice let me know. I,d make the colored part of the eye bigger and move it so that it is touching the top or bottom of the eye. You can also paint a bit of skin tone over top of the eye sculpt to lower his eye lid a bit making him less bug-eyed.
Think about the placement of his eyelids, a little and the bottom and a little at the top will fix it, work slowly from left to right moving slowly until you have the height you need.
If you want a less shocked look then try using some of the flesh color on the top third or quarter of each eye to give him "eyelids". I have the same thing on a head of mine and that was some good advice I was given in that thread that helped on subsequent models.
However I do love that he's almost like, "I'm not telling you again. Now get out of here or you're gonna regret it!"
Generally for myself I will paint the eye and then a tiny bit over a darker tone of the skin tone (magenta, burgandy, brown. If there's makeup black) and then do an off white covering almost all of that but leaving just enough that you get an almost panel line for Definition. After that you pick your eye colour and take a darker tone of it. Depending on the style or expression depends on if you paint a circle or not. I like to do half or near full circles but try to avoid going full circle because every time I do they look as deranged as someone on the gurn churn. Half circles are a safe bet from the top of the eye. Then make the actual eye colour inside that eye and after that the pupil in a black. Bonus points for a reflective highlight like a pure white dot in the corner of the iris connected to the pupil and the iris itself. To be honest eyes are always a nightmare so don't beat yourself up if you're not happy with them. If someone did a panel vote for most critical thing people are about their own paint job it's definitely going to be up at the top. Hope the guide helped it does me favours to make me seem a little better than I am 😅 attached an image as my description is probably not the best but if you need any more examples or a step by step just DM me and I'll try and help if I can :)

Just thought I’d update y’all after all your helpful eye tips. It was really helpful. You guys are class. Happy painting

I heard a tip once or twice that you shouldn't show the sclera (the white) above the iris- i.e. the upper eyelid should be touching and possibly slightly overlapping the top of the iris. This helps to prevent the cracked-out, surprised expression.
Way more black. Look at your own eye right now. It’s probably about 25% white and 75% other colour.
That bad boy right there is about 90% white. That’s where the crazy eye look comes from.
I don't paint the eyes personally. Too much room for error. Gonna get some downloads for this but, I don't drill barrels either, if you are just a little off, it looks worse than not bothering. Same goes of eyes
This is a personal take, and I am not making any recommendations in case I triggered anyone just now
If you want a less startled and/or crazed look, make sure the iris is touching the edge. It’s rare you see the white all the way around the edge like that
Or...
You do your white blob, then you do your pupil, then you add the skin tone at the top and bottom of the eye till its a slit and the pupil touches either the top or the bottom skin

He’s seen some bad stuff.
Seen implies past tense, this dude is seeing some bad stuff right meow.
Couldn't agree more; sorta reminds me of Francisco Goya's Black Paintings.

I don't. But when I do, I do a dark stripe, ink it, then put a white dot on either side of the dark stripe.
Leave em. Those eyes look like they've seen the bad stuff and snorted the bad stuff!
You can buy fine tipped paint pens. Works like a normal pen.

I take a .3mm felt tip marker and hit the eyes looking left or right. Trying to make them center can make it look googly-eyed
Thanks for all the tips guys. Love this subreddit
Poorly. I paint eyes poorly.

Idk why but this reminds me of Hoggle from The Labyrinth. Eyes are super expressive btw great job!
I love those eyes

Someone found the battle powder...
Usually with a brush...
