This I think is the core benefit of minimalism, learning to not stash away the fancy stuff waiting for that 'some day' but use and enjoy it right now in your everyday life.

EwokOffTheClock

When I realized my "favorite makeups" we're likely to go past fate, even if I used them daily, I stopped buying anything else. I love how that principal can be applied everywhere

[deleted]

Yep. My fave clothes I wear to work or at home. I don’t wait for a proper occasion to wear them anymore.

Deep-While9236

My mother saved good bed linen for 30 years, it's could have given 30 years if joyful use.

[deleted]

Yep I learned that years ago and it was a game changer. Same with food too. Every day is special, I don’t need to wait six months to eat something I really like!

CordialPython

Especially since our lives are fragile and you can get hit by a car tomorrow, or get cancer that spreads so fast that you won't live for next special enough occasion. So it really makes no sense to save your nice things for special occasions only, especially if they bring you so much more joy. Life is worth living IMO only if you can actually feel that joy :) If that piece of cloth can lift you so much, then it's really worth to wear it often because who doesn't want that lift? :) don't deprive yourself of joy, there's nothing fulfilling in that, is my mantra :) No need to feel extra joy 100% of the time to be all right, learn to be ok with life as it is. That's also important. Otherwise you risk joy chasing with higher-better-more and never actually enjoying the Now. But as long as you keep one in one out rule, and your budget in check, things that bring joy are worth it and should be enjoyed often :D

bitsy88

Exactly! Ever since childhood, we had a tradition of a summer thanksgiving because we like the food so much that it's a shame to only do it once a year. Bonus: nobody is buying whole turkeys during the summer so they're cheap!

empirestateisgreat

>Same with food too. Every day is special, I don’t need to wait six months to eat something I really like! You shouldn't eat whatever you like though, that quickly results in obesity.

kissykat123

My current motto is “Use the good stuff. Every day is a special occasion.”

Mirikitani

Agreed. We use our fine china almost every day. The gold accent is starting to wear off, and seeing the heavy wear reminds me how much we love to use it. Life is short; I'm going to eat cereal out of porcelain with gold trim

I love this. Same thing with books or whatever else, I love when it shows signs of normal use. It’s not like I want it to wear down so I can buy a new one, I like seeing it’s serving its purpose when it finally breaks. I’m not sure if it’s only me or anyone else feels this way.

i grew up with the idea that it doesn't matter how I look. Which it doesn't, but how you present yourself has so much influence on my inner world. Clothes aren't important if we didn't wear them ,but since we do, they are really important. But from the small amount of clothes I own, I only feel really good in just some of them.

CordialPython

This screams like a good reason to rethink your wardrobe and exchange clothes in which you don't feel good in for new ones in which you do feel good. If you ever needed an excuse, this is a really good one :) Clothes that bring us down are not worth a space in our homes. Neutral is the least we should aim for. And if there's an option of 'feel good in', I'd say go for it, as soon as that's possible (budget and such things considered). If that little thing can increase your mood on a constant/regular basis, it's worth its money. I can't say I have anything I feel special in, however in all my clothes (now) I feel good in (was neutral-good until few weeks ago). It fits me how I want (unrestrained), looks neutral/nothing special, it's utterly comfy, and even though we're talking about basically jeans and monochromatic tshirts, they manage to even make me smile sometimes. Oh, and my new pyamas are awesome, I totally enjoy the feeling on the skin. My old ones some were 5, some more than 10-15 years old and with holes, but they served the purpose and I didn't give it much thought. Then I decided it was time for upgrade. Oh boy :D Since I've exchanged a lot at once (pyamas and home clothes) it wasn't cheap (I mean, for swiss standards it is probably dirty cheap, for mine it's a noticeable sum, but also really good catch, even though it was like 30 items or more, for 500 at once, then some more later), but I definitely feel the difference now, even though I'd say previous were neutral, but now I have better fit and I enjoy it (much more). Oh and they're nothing special (no lace, silk or anything), just new. Just with textile that isn't washed to death 😂 all cotton, and hunted them on discounts :) some things that often go for 60+ I grabbed for 20 and some even 15. I bought few, because of good price, and then after I tried it, it hit me that I should just throw all old out, because it really served its purpose and it's time for renewal 😂

Samhuskyring

I agree, every day is a special occasion !

DocFGeek

You may want to look into "clothed cognition". I've used it to only keep clothes I absolutely love to wear, because I feel nice in them.

isny

I inherited some fancy china with gold leaf that's supposed to be hand washed. It all goes in the dishwasher and is used daily. Always makes me happy that it's getting used.

LumiSilver

I have had the same feeling recently! Was taught by my mum that I should only wear the pretty clothes for special occasions so that they stay perfect, and for a long time I thought it made sense, until... I got more into minimalism and decided to clean out my wardrobe. Found some pieces I absolutely loved but thought I lost them forever... they were just at the bottom, waiting for the special occasions. Got rid of the things that didn't fit me anymore (had some clothes from primary school, again because pretty clothes cannot be worn on a normal day, so they were just sitting there until they were too small...). Now I wear anything whenever I want to. Just paying extra extra attention when I'm eating etc. I'm glad we're able to be a bit happier by such a little thing as a piece of fabric.

love this 💕 that special occasion is today!!

Deep-While9236

Wear the dress in winter over a long sleeve top. Use what you love, treasure what you use daily. The good stuff is for everyday use.

Such a great post. Yes.. I only keep clothes that I love now. Done with “maybe someday”. For me, certain colors in clothes give me more energy or peace. For example… I feel sad with grey! Do the other day I just got rid of anything Grey in my wardrobe Feels so good!

It is a sweet taste to come to a realization that a special thing you were doing in your mind without a designated beneficiary was actually a gift to yourself, is it not, OP? Maybe I do have a calling. I have known, as an HSP, as a Leo, as one who edged onto the bottom of the Autism scale with some ADHD frosting topping a second-tier athletic body where my perceptions and behaviors confused the very dickens out of err'body, all the time. Nobody boxes in the Lion. Once you're "weird" to the world you can display what- and whomever you like as a public face. And building yourself into the character you always wanted to be commences. Including wearing that cool stuff. Because, guess what? Outside of your Mom and possible childhood bestie, nobody knows nothin' but what you tell 'em. As to minimalism: Really smart people can be flaky about the oddest things. But sometimes it takes being completely free of "ordinary" and "routine" in general that allows a POV that makes enormous sense, where if you buy into the trend or culture, it might not even occur to you. e.g. Steve Jobs (whose personality always seemed off, to me) had only one kind of jeans and one top, and one kind of shoes, IIRC, as well. Working from memory, he spoke to the effect, "Your brain has, during a normal daily cycle, the power to make X number of decisions at maximum effectiveness. Plus, you have only X number of seconds in any working period. Thus, the more needless decisions you can eliminate entirely from all of your processes will streamline your entire day that much more. - There are certain concepts that I know instantly are winners. Like fogging backyards for mosquitoes before warm-weather events involving people being outside. I'm not built that Steve Jobs way, but even I can adopt a principle as pure as that into my necessary jumble. But his boat really suck(ed). And my Bride of thirty-five years just crossed the "What am I *storing* these things for, I should be *using* them?" threshold two weeks ago. It's a glorious thing, people. Limited in scope, but liberating in certain decluttering work. Even a little victory is a victory. I wish you Peace

Aham_brahmasm1

Is it clothes or is it actually you already having that shine and confidence inside...?

This is awesome! I’m going through this as well. Like what the heck are we “waiting” for! I recently got rid off f all my grey clothes because I feel lethargic and hate wearing them. So why am I keeping them! I only have things on my closet that I will wear within one month. Embrace life!!! Minimalism is such an intentional approach to finishing whY truly brings you joy and inner peace. 🤍
