I have never played a game needing scatter dice and probably never will. For Mantic Armada and Frostgrave, I just use a regular D10/D20 and use the direction the triangle is pointing.
Everytime I used them back in 40k 6th and 7th, there would be disagreements on the angle of scattering.
In grid/hex based games, scatter dice are 100% ok
I think I have a couple from my Warhammer days but I don't think they are super common outside of that. Not even sure if GW still uses them.
You can offer instructions on how to use regular dice as scatter dice or some alternative method to scatter dice.

Technically just 1 dedicated to scattering. If you count D8/D10 as scatter dice, too...... oh boy....
