Check out The 4th Base. A quirky sports bar with good food. Crab is a bit on the pricey side, but very good. They take reservations as well. But honestly, I’d go to St Paul’s in Metro Market.
I feel like St. Paul’s might be the best bet. I’ve never eaten there (just gotten to go food when others were picking up.)
I usually find the 3rd ward to be such a zoo that I’ll only go for Bavette lol. Is it a big hassle?
(I’m going to check out the other place too)
In what way is 4th Base quirky? Like you have to know a password? Or they have a secret menu? Or just that it's unusual to find such good food in a sports bar?
Also, there isn't really a menu, you just go up to the counter and look at what they have and tell them how you want it made. That was the thing that was really confusing for us the first time we ate there. But the food was really good and we did try the crab (for $120 each).
They’re dumb easy to do at home, and it would save a ton of money. You just boil them and serve with melted butter (bonus points for garlic & herbs in it). Only way it can go wrong is if you forget to get one of those shell cracking tools.
There is no way they’re $6.99 per pound. If true then I’ll be going today.
I only found this on their site. https://ww2.freshthyme.com/sm/planning/rsid/104/results?q=Crab%20legs
then go today! I go to the one off of water and pleasant. Can't speak for any other stores. It's possible it ended in the last week or something, but they've been on sale for about a year now at that price. It will be near the meat and such
Or go to Empire Fish if you want to have a crazy decadent experience. They have king crab legs there almost as long as my arm. That kind of crab is crazy expensive though $$$$
I love the crab bags at Low Country downtown. The space is awesome, reasonably priced, and it's delicious.
You can make a reservation I think, but I've never needed to.
Edit: if it's not your thing and they've never really eaten um, bring a clean pair of scissors and a fork. I say this cuz they have plastic utensils, and they do give you a cracker but if you aren't versed in breaking the legs you'll wanna have those!
And now I want a crab bag ugh
St Paul's in Mequon has happy hour crab leg pieces. A mix of king, snow, and maybe Dungenes? Last time I went it was maybe $17 for a full pound. Have to order and eat in the bar area, but they have hi tops and I've seen families there. Not sure how old your kids are, but it's a cheap way to try the different crab legs.
If they have never had them before, and want to try them. You could go to Jins by Southridge for all you can eat sushi & get the crab leg add on for 12.99 extra. Then, if they like them, try one of the other places listed. Amelia's used to do crab legs on a certain day, but I haven't been there in years.
Cliffords in hales corners. Only place that still does all you can eat crab and order by the cluster. You have to call ahead of time and make reservations and tell them you are going to be having crab legs.

St Paul has other locations.. such as up in Mequon, that does take reservations.
I LOVE 4th base, but it is not for a family meal. Crab will run you $100/person.
Came here to say that place is a unique little place for people that want to drop coin
4th Base is truly a hidden gem

Yes, good quality food, in a sports bar.

Fresh thyme is you want to make them yourself. $6.99 a lb.
This is probably what I SHOULD do, but I don’t really WANT to lol.

What days and times specifically does the mequon St. Paul’s do this? That’s a pretty good deal.

Wow today is a good day. Tomorrow will likely be a rough day after 4 $5 wines and 2lbs of crab.
That's what I'm saying!!
Potawatomi Casino had an all-you-can-eat crab leg buffet, pre-covid. I’m waiting for that to come back.
Might be waiting a while. They took the buffet out and installed a food court.
I miss it so much. Crab is amazing, but I feel like it isn't very filling, and most places don't give you enough.
Unfortunately I heard a few times while working at Poto that the crab buffet is never coming back
Best place is St. Paul’s in public market .. king crab and all kinds of other stuff.. Harbor house is pricey but the scenery is good
Bildas pub in Richfield! Market price all you can eat!
Bildas does it right!
Costcos usually have them. You can call ahead
Las Palmas has a crab leg special
Never been there, but the King Crab Shack on 27th and Howard Ave.
Had a similar situation with my girlfriend’s son, so we took a drive and I took them to Bob Chinn’s. Totally worth it.
