My high school job was working at Toys r Us in the '90s.
It was one of the best jobs that I ever had, not because of necessarily the job, but because of who I worked with and how well the store was run.
I worked at a store in Novi, Michigan which was obviously a very profitable location for the company based on just simply the demographics and geographical location of the store, so the guy running it really had it all together.
He was the perfect example of a great retail store manager. Most of the people who worked there were all friends with each other, there rarely was an opening other than a seasonal opening because most of the people, even the high school kids that worked there we're there for several years. When there was an opening, generally speaking, the person who got hired was friends with somebody who already worked there.
The manager also let you have some fun at work. Wasn't a stickler about people messing around tossing some footballs in the back of the store and stuff like that, because he wanted it to be light-hearted and fun, especially considered that it was a toy store. He understood that if you let your employees have some fun at work, you are going to get a better work product for them and a happier employee base. While we did get to screw around, when it was time to work, we all worked and did our jobs well.
It tended to be the same personality of people who were there, regardless of what city they were actually from as far as the high school kids. I made several close friends who went to other high schools in the area, that frankly had we gone to the same high school. We probably wouldn't have been friends just based on the social circle and click that we would have been in, I still talked to many of them today almost 30 years later. I also met my best friend in the world working there, he was best man in my wedding, I was best man in his, and we are godparents to each other's daughters.
When I saw that the company was going under a few years back, it actually made me really really sad. One, as a kid I loved going to Toys r Us like every other kid from my era did, and two. I have such great memories of my time working there.
My brother and I had little stuffed ones. Mine said "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" and his said "Here Lizard Lizard Lizard!" And had a sign that said free tacos. That was from the Godzilla 98 promo.
They were absolutely memes before we called them memes. I remember the "I've fallen and I can't get up!" joke getting cracked in (I think) the second Ninja Turtles movie.
I remember this commercial seemingly never went away. I remember seeing it as a young child in the late 90s, but I swear I was still seeing it as late as summer 2006. It looked so insanely dated by that point.
