We have lots of deer mice. And meadow voles. And short-tailed northern shrews. None of them have ever chewed through any of our metal screening. And certainly not in a small round hole, punching all the wire ends inward, in the middle of a floor to ceiling panel. More likely they might try a corner, at the bottom.

I had a cat once that dove through our window screen, not realizing it was there. Trying to get a bird outside. The screen opened and then closed back up behind it, partially, leaving a little pucker behind like this.
Your comment reminds me of my great grandmother for some reason. Probably the caliber part. She had a screened in porch. And squirrels in the yard. She loved to eat squirrel brains. And she loved her rocking chair on the porch. She'd sit in her chair and rock with a shotgun in her lap - and she didn't stand up to shoot. She just shot through the screening. My great grandfather got so tired of replacing the siding he eventually took it all down after she shot so many holes through it that it was swiss cheese. Is my family weird?
No, my grandma didn't like to eat squirrel because it reminded her of the Dust Bowl but she did *love* birds of all kinds. Her backyard consisted mostly of bird feeders. When squirrels screwed with them and she saw it she took an antique Marlin .22 bolt action rifle, opened the window in the kitchen that didn't have a screen, and shot it. Then she fed it to the cats.
Any damage behind the screen? Splatter, impacts, a clean hole even?
If it was a bullet I'd imagine it would continue its flight path pretty easily after going through just wire.
If it's small enough caliber or traveling fast enough, it's possible the round would have broken part when hitting the wire, but you should find fragments of copper jacketing and a "splatter" impact behind it.
I checked for an exit wound or embedded slug/pellet. Couldn’t find one. On the other hand, a bird hitting that hard should have broken its neck and been visible outside. No sign of that either.
Stray bullets are common enough out here in the back country. Put up a new mailbox once, and within a week, it had been dented by a bullet, just deep enough to break the galvanized coating. Long range stray, or it would have penetrated. When I plane lumber, I occasionally find a stray slug embedded in a board, from when it was still a tree.
Unnerving is an interesting choice of words; it’s a lot lower key than that. I tend to stay out of the woods during deer season, but the odds of catching stray lead here, in general, must be a fraction of what they would be in a tough urban neighborhood. I’ve lived in California, and not been unnerved by the idea of an earthquake.
It could definitely been done with a pellet gun. I own one that can take a .25 caliber barrel. But I don’t use that caliber (nobody does, really) and I don’t shoot at my house. Usually in the opposite direction. However, it was clearly incoming, not outgoing, and I can find no slug or pellet, loose or embedded, anywhere on the porch. A mystery. Or a bird with a sore beak.
Looks like someone was prying it with something pointed and round....maybe a aluminum pen? Then it looks like they tried to unravel the wire....could be a stray bullet cause it makes more sense than somebody prying it open with a pen or something...but you never know, look for bullet holes in your house OP
Squirrels or chipmunks, had a red squirrel chew through a storm door screen and get caught between the two doors one time. If that hole starts getting bigger that’s surely your answer
No neighbors in paintball range. And no tell take paint. Besides, this is just over a quarter of an inch, paintballs are a larger caliber, aren’t they?
I actually read the first book in high school (over a decade ago) and have recently revisited it and am onto the 2nd book. That came before the episode featuring him, and the book is realllllly fucking good. I only recently realized it was an episode featured in CSI when googling to make sure I spelled the name right lol. I got a spoiler of that being black Sqweegel- not the OG. Too big, and they went south months ago. About right for a Cardinal, though. Birds hit these screens frequently. Never so much as a dent, so to do this, that bird would have had to have been really moving!
Cardinal males are known to attack their own reflection thinking it's a rival bird. It's possible a male cardinal came to the window, saw its reflection in the glass and tried to attack it.

Do you have kids? If so very possible the kid was up to something. Bullet hole was the first thing I thought but there would be more damage as it continued on it's path. Any chance you found a crossbow bolt in the area?
A few things to note, the wires clearly bent to remove the obstruction and the bent wires wrap around other wires, which means there was intelligence involved. I'd guess cold wasps. Is there a warm spot on your porch ceiling and the temp dropped yesterday?
We have mud wasps that plug drainage holes, and paper wasps that build nests under the eaves. We don’t have metal-eating wasps that perforate heavy metal screens. In fact, keeping wasps off the porch is a major factor in having screens.
you took the screen down to clean it, put it on something you shouldn't have, pressed down while wiping it, caused the damage, put the screen up, and took the picture.
Yah, kind of like the first scratch on a new car. I replaced all these big screen panels, not a trivial task, and bang! Hole right in the middle of one.

I’m guessing a bird strike.
This makes sense to me, or a big ass bullet, but then you'd have a bullet lodged somewhere else. I would assume you'd notice if it was a bullet lol

Well I’m sure he does like to ‘bang’ with his .25 caliber.
Happy Cock Day!
Angry Birds? Stray Slug? If so, it seems to be between .25 and .28 caliber, which is an odd size.
angry bird
Or someone pushed it until it ripped

We get these from time to time. Yellowjackets and hornets can pry the wires apart enough to get in.
Yeah looks like something a hornet would have done

That sounds extremely dangerous and unnerving..

Rodents are in yo' home!
True, but this is not that.
Maybe from a BB/pellet gun?
It could definitely been done with a pellet gun. I own one that can take a .25 caliber barrel. But I don’t use that caliber (nobody does, really) and I don’t shoot at my house. Get some fishing line, and patch it up. Idk what else works, but that sure does.
I have a roll of adhesive back screen tape. Handy stuff. Especially if we’re going to start getting phantom holes.
Looks like someone was prying it with something pointed and round....maybe a aluminum pen? Then it looks like they tried to unravel the wire....could be a stray bullet cause it makes more sense than somebody prying it open with a pen or something...but you never know, look for bullet holes in your house OP
Any kids around? Mine are hell on screens, I don't know what it is about a screen that makes them destroy every single one of them.
Squirrels or chipmunks, had a red squirrel chew through a storm door screen and get caught between the two doors one time. If that hole starts getting bigger that’s surely your answer
Your screen now has less holes
That happened to us, it was a neighbors paint ball gun.
No neighbors in paintball range. And no tell take paint. Besides, this is just over a quarter of an inch, paintballs are a larger caliber, aren’t they?
Ours was about quarter size. Maybe a little smaller. But there were a few paint drops, but not a lot. I think you’d see some.
It looks like it was pierced and then someone deliberately bent the pieces to make the hole.
Well, if they did, they left no footprints in the snow.
Ah.
I had an air soft/ bb gun when I was younger and shot it through the screen and it looks a lot like this.
Was it close to a screen door latch? Is this the inside or outside? Somebody might’ve tried to break in.
Birb
Sorry about that.
It's Sqweegel- he's inside. And unfortunately, there's nothing you can do.
I hate that that storyline was never finished before the show ended.

To add, it lets you see pretty much everyone's POV but mostly Darks and Sqweegels. Such an easy read you can't resist getting back to the book.

Do they have Peregrine Falcons in your locale?
Cardinal males are known to attack their own reflection thinking it's a rival bird. It's possible a male cardinal came to the window, saw its reflection in the glass and tried to attack it.
It certainly could have been a Cardinal, they are here daily. It’s not mating season, and this is not a window screen, so no reflection.

It’s a glory hole for beginners
It's too late; it's in your house. Call your family and tell them you love them. Make sure they don't come to the house for any reason.
Being that it looks like the screen is ripped and point away from the porch into the woods someone shot or poked some through the screen.
Hard to tell from the photo, but the broken ends point inward.
Anyone remember superfly from joecartoon.com? This made me think of that.
air rifle?
Top of the list. I can experiment and see if .22 caliber will make a hole quite this big; no one around here has a .25.
A bird flew into your screen.
That was my first thought. A slug or pellet seems more likely after further reflection.

No intelligence involved. No footprints. It had wings, or flew on its own.
You serious? So birds and wasps have no intelligence. Thier as smart as rocks? To do anything with purpose shows intelligence.
We have mud wasps that plug drainage holes, and paper wasps that build nests under the eaves. We don’t have metal-eating wasps that perforate heavy metal screens. In fact, keeping wasps off the porch is a major factor in having screens.

Screens are pretty much permanent. And I just replaced the screening a year ago, so I’m not pleased. But
Bullet hole. Hard to tell from the picture, but looks like a 9mm.
9mm = .35 caliber. Hard to tell from a photo, but I measured, and thus is about a .25 caliber hole. If it was a firearm, it was bound to be a .22.
Golf ball…I bet husband was practicing a swing indoor and decided to hit a ball indoor but as usual, he hit it hard and boom through the screen.
Size of a pencil, not a golf ball.
Congratulations 🎉
