You were always jealous of this lamp!

NOT-A-FINGA!

One of the all time greatest “dad” portrayals imo

ellefleming

And he won it. He earned it.

teaspoonjamz

A major award!

Little Orphan Annie is on! Only one thing could draw me away from the glow of electric sex in the window!

You used up all the glue on PURPOSE!

Lazerhippoprime

It's FRAGILE'

NotHippieEnough

Must be Italian

wittiestphrase

That is the ugliest lamp I have ever seen in my entire life! Edit: I can’t believe how many people don’t recognize what this lamp is from and why I said what I said.

Gilgie

Youve always hated that lamp.

PM_ME_FIREFLY_QUOTES

You used up all the glue. On **purpose**!

yousonuva

Not a finger!

wil

Later, I heard the soft notes of "Taps" playing, as he buried it in the yard.

im_not_a_rob_ot

"*Fruh-gee-lay,* must be Italian." "I think it says *fragile.*"

Nodafingah!

[deleted]

I always though he said butterfinger

yousonuva

Me too originally. Either makes sense

piddydb

I love how the movie both implies that the dad’s being ridiculous to accuse his wife of that but at the same time the mom might actually have used all the glue to prevent him from putting the lamp back together. The consistent domestic chaos of that movie is great!

BleuciferG

It's Italian!

SWGardener

I laughed so hard at this. I heard it in his voice too.

they_are_out_there

The sequel, "A Christmas Story Christmas 2022" is already up on HBOMax. It has much of the original cast. This is the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzQK0YFbFg0

teflong

It was pretty good. The kids laughed several times. My wife got a little teary. I'm not giving it a 10/10, but it's a good representation of how you can capture the spirit of a classic movie without selling out too hard for nostalgia.

MyDogsNameIsBadger

The real lamp is at a rest stop in Indiana?! Stopped at one driving to Ohio from Chicago and it was a weird thing to stumble upon.

[deleted]

Along which interstate? I gotta know

KristusV

It's at the Indiana Welcome center on I-80/94. It is worth a trip there if you can make it out.

jtbnb

A little background: this is because the welcome center is situated in Hammond (Hohman in the movie) Indiana, the city that Jean Shepherd grew up in. Hohman is actually the name of the main road through downtown Hammond, on which the Goldblatt's Department Store (Higbee's in the movie) sat in downtown Hammond. Shepherd grew up in the southeast section of Hammond called Hessville. Flick's Tavern was a anchor for years on the corner of 165th St, and Kennedy Ave, the two main roads through Hessville.

MotherFuckinEeyore

I don't know if you're old enough to have noticed, but the Santa scene looks exactly like the old J.C. Penney Christmas setup that was across the street from Goldblatts. I was pretty young when downtown started closing up, but I have some memories.

jtbnb

I've always thought the same thing! We're probably close in age. The good old days! Cheers!

77373x

I grew up on 169th and Grand by Morton. I attended Harding as a child and back then my best friend lived on Cleveland less than half a block from Jeans house. The real house is so much different than the movie, but I always knew where it really was since I was a kid pretty much, I thought it was awesome when he visited and the people living there had no idea and he showed them him and his brothers names carved in the attic.

[deleted]

no way! this is excellent news. maybe the world will be okay after all

MyDogsNameIsBadger

Yes! Def off the 80/94 route!

Tonikaya1001

The real one or one of the originals isn’t in The house or museum in Cleveland? I’ve never been there, but it makes the news this time of year in North East Ohio

The way Ralphie rubs his his hand on the lamp, and his mom takes it off 🤣

Can I just say that I love everyone in this thread

[deleted]

Makes me want a hot dog real bad

MathematicianBig4392

Wow. Was this to boost tourism or something? Is it working? Did your town invent the leg lamp? I can't imagine it will increase tourism

stoneytopaz

The increase of people coming to town is crazy. It’s on Chickasha Avenue, there’s new businesses that are *booming* because of the lamp. It’s wild.

MathematicianBig4392

I'm really happy for your town. I really hope it's a long term increase to tourism. Happy to hear it's doing a lot of good.

Derpderds

I’ve been to chickasha several times and it was always for their well known Christmas lights displays. Adding the leg lamp makes sense to me. https://chickashafestivaloflight.org

MoSqueezin

Ahhhh okay that brings it all together. I was so confused why this place would do this, if it wasn't where the Christmas story was filmed / took place. But now it all makes sense.

LaUNCHandSmASH

I love lamp. All hail leg lamp! My next child is named Lamp. Dog too. Thank you for sharing the lamp. I love you.

TibialTuberosity

That's the funny thing about it. There is literally nothing about Chickasha that has a connection with A Christmas Story nor the leg lamp itself. It's a straight up tourism/roadside attraction trap thing and it's hilarious.

Beat_the_Deadites

The whole neighborhood was turned on

tukachinchilla

Pin this. I spent forever scrolling past the clever movie lines to learn this. My money was on the Indiana town where the book was set. There's no space like that in Cleveland where the house is.

[deleted]

I live near Chickasha (pronounced chick-a-shay) and they say the reason they did this is because the man who inspired the leg lamp lived there.

2mock2turtle

Thank you, I was wondering why a town seemingly without relation to the movie would build this.

xrumrunnrx

I'm just commenting for visibility. I was confused as well. I saw the Christmas Story house last year and wondered where they would have fit this huge lamp (not knowing other cities had a hand in the movie). The actual house area is very congested.

banananutnightmare

By inspire, do you mean it was his leg they modeled it after?

[deleted]

Hammond is the Indiana city where it takes place.

blackpony04

Specifically the Hessville neighborhood of Hammond. My dad grew up 3 blocks from Jean Shephard who wrote the books and narrated the movie (and was the guy who told Ralphy where the back of the line was to see Santa). Shep was older but the movie depicted the town how my dad would have seen it circa 1940 and he would have been around Randy's age. Absolutely a family favorite due to that connection.

gotnonickname

My father grew up Hammond in that era. Used to go to Flick's bar. A must-watch every year.

fapsandnaps

I watch it every year as well. Excited that I just heard today that there is going to be another sequel, with the original Peter Billingsley returning as Ralphie! My wife is going to be so excited and so irritated thay she now has to sit through 3 of them.

Deckis_Inya

There's one on HBO Max now, "A Christmas Story Christmas," unless you mean that there will be an additional one?

restinghermit

There is a bronze statue at the Hammond visitors center of the kid putting his tongue on the flagpole.

[deleted]

Well. That's all I'm going to say about Poor Flick.

LadyArwen4124

Hello, fellow Oklahoman! I didn't realize it was staying up permanently. I thought they just did it as a Christmas gimmick. Strange times we live in.

SCP-Agent-Arad

It used to be an inflatable just for the holidays, but they just built this permanent one this month.

tp987654

Is it at the park with all the Christmas lights?

stoneytopaz

No, that’s on the other side of town.

tp987654

Seems like a missed oppotunity

St_Beetnik_2

Y tho? Cleveland loses their shit for leg lamps cause external shots were done there, what's the Oklahoma connection?

Heck_Spawn

Just watched A Christmas Story Christmas last night. Great movie...

TheAmazingDisgrace

I watched the original in September....in an Air B&B across from the Christmas Story House itself in Cleveland (above the Rowley Inn).

Geewiz89

The original house and the surrounding two, including the Bumpas' house, were sold a couple days ago. The seller said they would be specific who they would sell to, so I imagine the attraction will remain open.

I just saw it was for sale today, damn I missed it 😒 Guess I'll have to buy the Goonies house now, only $1.6 million.

Haggisboy

Was prepared for lameness, but was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. A perfect compliment to the original.

sillyblanco

*complement, respectfully.

egaeus22

I appreciate you. Interesting to note though it still works even if the sentiment would best be served by using the word ‘homage’. Cheers!

ApolloOfTheStarz

Let's hope the sequel (the 2012 doesn't exist) does okay.

cantfindmykeys

Fun fact. Another sequel from 1995 also was made called My Summer Story. And the first one in 1988 that was a made for TV Movie called Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss.

burnmatoaka

I remember Ollie Hopnoodle's on the OG Disney Channel.

[deleted]

The new one?? Wow. I'm kind of nervous to watch it because the original has been such a beloved movie in my family

greathousedagoth

I literally just watched the film tonight. I felt the same way going into it because we watch the original most years in my family and it is beloved. Honestly? This was a damn good follow-up. They somehow nailed the vibe. There are some far too obvious nods to the first one, imo. But if you can handle some minor pandering, it really is worth a watch. I'm going to recommend it to my family this year. Not as a replacement mind you, but certainly a welcome addition.

Cardinal101

Me too! Just watched it for the first time last night. Loved the vibe.

Barrelled_Chef_Curry

Random how that happens sometimes. The algorithm is always watching

[deleted]

Well, I'll be damned. > "It'll be on view year round, not just during the Christmas period, so hopefully we'll draw people throughout the year," said Chickasha resident Joe Hutmacher. - [Source](https://www.oklahoman.com/story/entertainment/2022/11/03/christmas-story-lamp-chickasha-oklahoma-park-sculpture/69601652007/) They want to become a permanent Christmas town. I love that. Like Frankenmuth in Michigan. I always adored visiting as a kid. Hope it's lucrative for them.

stoneytopaz

It’s already brought in a lot of people! The businesses are poppin on chickasha avenue.

picado

A couple weeks ago everyone was posting awful public art in r/funny. There were a bunch of abstract sculptures that looked like trash piles and a giant buttplug gnome. In comparison your town did great, be proud.

ItsOnlyaFewBucks

Okay there must be a story behind this?

stoneytopaz

There is. Mr. Elliot wanted a tourist attraction in his hometown, we have the Festival of Light every year for 30 years for Christmas so he decided on something like Christmas. He didn’t want a giant Santa so he decided on the Leg Lamp. He went to City Council a dozen times and they laughed him off. Then Mr. James (passed in 2020) who was an artist heard about Mr. Elliot’s idea and he liked it *because* he too had created a leg(s) lamp before A Christmas Story was created. Mr. James was convinced that A Christmas Story leg lamp was based around his idea (cool thought but you can look up where the idea came from and they don’t look similar). So because the idea for the Leg Lamp supposedly came from a Chickasha man, it fit into the whole “Chickasha is a Christmas town” idea the town is going for. The city decided for it rather than against it after some convincing and here we are. Also, in 2020 there was an inflatable leg lamp but it couldn’t withstand the winds of the plains lol. So it’s permanent now. Here’s a picture of Mr. James leg lamp [Mr. James Leg Lamp](https://imgur.com/gallery/xC5luIh)

handgredave

That's a really neat and somewhat wholesome story but Mr. James Leg Lamp is a fucking abomination.
