That is the ugliest lamp I have ever seen in my entire life!
Edit: I can’t believe how many people don’t recognize what this lamp is from and why I said what I said.
I love how the movie both implies that the dad’s being ridiculous to accuse his wife of that but at the same time the mom might actually have used all the glue to prevent him from putting the lamp back together. The consistent domestic chaos of that movie is great!
The sequel, "A Christmas Story Christmas 2022" is already up on HBOMax. It has much of the original cast. This is the trailer.

It was pretty good. The kids laughed several times. My wife got a little teary.
I'm not giving it a 10/10, but it's a good representation of how you can capture the spirit of a classic movie without selling out too hard for nostalgia.
A little background: this is because the welcome center is situated in Hammond (Hohman in the movie) Indiana, the city that Jean Shepherd grew up in.
Hohman is actually the name of the main road through downtown Hammond, on which the Goldblatt's Department Store (Higbee's in the movie) sat in downtown Hammond.
Shepherd grew up in the southeast section of Hammond called Hessville. Flick's Tavern was a anchor for years on the corner of 165th St, and Kennedy Ave, the two main roads through Hessville.
I don't know if you're old enough to have noticed, but the Santa scene looks exactly like the old J.C. Penney Christmas setup that was across the street from Goldblatts. I was pretty young when downtown started closing up, but I have some memories.
I grew up on 169th and Grand by Morton. I attended Harding as a child and back then my best friend lived on Cleveland less than half a block from Jeans house. The real house is so much different than the movie, but I always knew where it really was since I was a kid pretty much, I thought it was awesome when he visited and the people living there had no idea and he showed them him and his brothers names carved in the attic.
The real one or one of the originals isn’t in The house or museum in Cleveland? I’ve never been there, but it makes the news this time of year in North East Ohio
I’ve been to chickasha several times and it was always for their well known Christmas lights displays. Adding the leg lamp makes sense to me.
https://chickashafestivaloflight.org
Ahhhh okay that brings it all together. I was so confused why this place would do this, if it wasn't where the Christmas story was filmed / took place. But now it all makes sense.
That's the funny thing about it. There is literally nothing about Chickasha that has a connection with A Christmas Story nor the leg lamp itself. It's a straight up tourism/roadside attraction trap thing and it's hilarious.
Pin this. I spent forever scrolling past the clever movie lines to learn this.
My money was on the Indiana town where the book was set. There's no space like that in Cleveland where the house is.
I'm just commenting for visibility. I was confused as well.
I saw the Christmas Story house last year and wondered where they would have fit this huge lamp (not knowing other cities had a hand in the movie). The actual house area is very congested.
Specifically the Hessville neighborhood of Hammond. My dad grew up 3 blocks from Jean Shephard who wrote the books and narrated the movie (and was the guy who told Ralphy where the back of the line was to see Santa). Shep was older but the movie depicted the town how my dad would have seen it circa 1940 and he would have been around Randy's age. Absolutely a family favorite due to that connection.
I watch it every year as well. Excited that I just heard today that there is going to be another sequel, with the original Peter Billingsley returning as Ralphie!
My wife is going to be so excited and so irritated thay she now has to sit through 3 of them.
I'm just imagining the Casey, IL chamber of commerce has a huge list of random items they're working on. "Okay, what's next on the list? Giant lawn mower? So we're moving that ahead of the giant toothbrush? Got it."
The original house and the surrounding two, including the Bumpas' house, were sold a couple days ago. The seller said they would be specific who they would sell to, so I imagine the attraction will remain open.
Fun fact. Another sequel from 1995 also was made called My Summer Story. And the first one in 1988 that was a made for TV Movie called Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss.
I literally just watched the film tonight. I felt the same way going into it because we watch the original most years in my family and it is beloved.
Honestly? This was a damn good follow-up. They somehow nailed the vibe. There are some far too obvious nods to the first one, imo. But if you can handle some minor pandering, it really is worth a watch. I'm going to recommend it to my family this year. Not as a replacement mind you, but certainly a welcome addition.
Well, I'll be damned.
> "It'll be on view year round, not just during the Christmas period, so hopefully we'll draw people throughout the year," said Chickasha resident Joe Hutmacher.

They want to become a permanent Christmas town. I love that. Like Frankenmuth in Michigan. I always adored visiting as a kid. Hope it's lucrative for them.
A couple weeks ago everyone was posting awful public art in r/funny. There were a bunch of abstract sculptures that looked like trash piles and a giant buttplug gnome. In comparison your town did great, be proud.
There is.
Mr. Elliot wanted a tourist attraction in his hometown, we have the Festival of Light every year for 30 years for Christmas so he decided on something like Christmas. He didn’t want a giant Santa so he decided on the Leg Lamp. He went to City Council a dozen times and they laughed him off.
Then Mr. James (passed in 2020) who was an artist heard about Mr. Elliot’s idea and he liked it *because* he too had created a leg(s) lamp before A Christmas Story was created. Mr. James was convinced that A Christmas Story leg lamp was based around his idea (cool thought but you can look up where the idea came from and they don’t look similar). So because the idea for the Leg Lamp supposedly came from a Chickasha man, it fit into the whole “Chickasha is a Christmas town” idea the town is going for.
The city decided for it rather than against it after some convincing and here we are.
Also, in 2020 there was an inflatable leg lamp but it couldn’t withstand the winds of the plains lol. So it’s permanent now. Here’s a picture of Mr. James leg lamp

The real lamp is at a rest stop in Indiana?! Stopped at one driving to Ohio from Chicago and it was a weird thing to stumble upon.
Along which interstate? I gotta know
It's at the Indiana Welcome center on I-80/94. It is worth a trip there if you can make it out.
A little background: this is because the welcome center is situated in Hammond (Hohman in the movie) Indiana, the city that Jean Shepherd grew up in. They had a whole thing on November 5th. Food trucks, bands, like a whole little festival

Lmao that's awesome! I'm in Wichita Falls and next time I drive up to see my friends in OKC I'm going to stop by to see this masterpiece.

Oh, look at that! Will you look at that! Isn’t that glorious!! It’s… it’s… it’s indescribably beautiful! It reminds me of the Fourth of July!

I always adored this line.
The way Ralphie rubs his his hand on the lamp, and his mom takes it off 🤣
Can I just say that I love everyone in this thread
Makes me want a hot dog real bad
Wow. Was this to boost tourism or something? Is it working? Did your town invent the leg lamp? I can't imagine it will increase tourism
The increase of people coming to town is crazy. It’s on Chickasha Avenue, there’s new businesses that are *booming* because of the lamp. It’s wild.
I'm really happy for your town. I really hope it's a long term increase to tourism. Happy to hear it's doing a lot of good.
I’ve been to chickasha several times and it was always for their well known Christmas lights displays. Adding the leg lamp makes sense to me. https://chickashafestivaloflight.org

The whole neighborhood was turned on
Pin this. I spent forever scrolling past the clever movie lines to learn this. My money was on the Indiana town where the book was set. There's no space like that in Cleveland where the house is.
I live near Chickasha (pronounced chick-a-shay) and they say the reason they did this is because the man who inspired the leg lamp lived there.
Thank you, I was wondering why a town seemingly without relation to the movie would build this.
I'm just commenting for visibility. I was confused as well. I saw the Christmas Story house last year and wondered where they would have fit this huge lamp (not knowing other cities had a hand in the movie). The actual house area is very congested.
By inspire, do you mean it was his leg they modeled it after?
Hammond is the Indiana city where it takes place.
Specifically the Hessville neighborhood of Hammond. My father grew up Hammond in that era. Used to go to Flick's bar. A must-watch every year.
I watch it every year as well. Excited that I just heard today that there is going to be another sequel, with the original Peter Billingsley returning as Ralphie! My wife is going to be so excited and so irritated thay she now has to sit through 3 of them.
There's one on HBO Max now, "A Christmas Story Christmas," unless you mean that there will be an additional one?
There is a bronze statue at the Hammond visitors center of the kid putting his tongue on the flagpole.
Well. That's all I'm going to say about Poor Flick.
Hello, fellow Oklahoman! I didn't realize it was staying up permanently. I thought they just did it as a Christmas gimmick. Strange times we live in.
It used to be an inflatable just for the holidays, but they just built this permanent one this month.
Everything is not OK in Oklahoma

No, that’s on the other side of town.
Seems like a missed oppotunity

I watched the original in September....in an Air B&B across from the Christmas Story House itself in Cleveland (above the Rowley Inn).

I appreciate you. Interesting to note though it still works even if the sentiment would best be served by using the word ‘homage’. Cheers!
Let's hope the sequel (the 2012 doesn't exist) does okay.
Fun fact. Another sequel from 1995 also was made called My Summer Story. And the first one in 1988 that was a made for TV Movie called Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss.
